Referring to the traditional Indian idea of unity, Bhagwat said that religions may be different but humanity is one, adding that truth is one even though people may understand and express it in different ways based on their experiences and beliefs.

On Sunday (December 1), while speaking about the declining population of India, RSS chief Bhagwat said, "The decline in population is a matter of concern. Modern population science says that when the fertility rate of a society goes below 2.1, that society vanishes from the earth. The society gets destroyed even without any crisis. In this way, many languages and societies have disappeared. The population should not fall below 2.1."

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, in his first public remarks after the results of the Lok Sabha elections 2024, on Monday (June 10) said that a true sevak (those who serve the people) does not have “ahankar” (arrogance) and does his/her work without hurting others.

While commenting on the bitter poll campaign, Bhagwat said “decorum was not maintained”.

While speaking at a gathering of RSS leaders and workers, after the culmination of Karyakarta Vikas Varg, Bhagwat emphasised the importance of building consensus.

“Jo vastavik sevak hai, jisko vastavik sevak kaha ja sakta hai, woh maryada se chalta hai… Uss maryada ka paalan karke jo chalta hai woh karm karta hai lekin karmon mein lipt nahi hota. Usme ahankar nahin aata ki maine kiya. Aur wahi sevak kehlane ka adhikari rehta hai (A true sevak maintains decorum while working… The one who maintains decorum does his work, but remains unattached. There is no arrogance that I did this. Only such a person has the right to be called a sevak),” Bhagwat said.

The RSS chief further criticised the political campaigns carried out before the elections.&nbsp;

“The kind of things that were said, the way the two sides castigated each other (during the elections)… the way no one cared about social divisions being created because of what was being done… and for no reason the Sangh was dragged into this… untruths were spread with the use of technology. Is this the way knowledge should be used? How will the country operate like this?” Bhagwat said.

<h2>Opposition is not an opponent, says RSS chief&nbsp;</h2>

Speaking on the rise of Opposition in this Lok Sabha elections, Bhagwat said, “I do not call it Virodhi Paksh, I call it Pratipaksh. Pratipaksh virodhi nahi hai (The Opposition is not an opponent). It is revealing a side and that must be deliberated upon. If we understand that this is how we must operate, then we must be cognizant of the decorum required in contesting elections. That decorum was not maintained.”

Bhagwat further reiterated the concern of the Sangh over continuing violence in Manipur and questioned who will pay attention to the issues on the ground. He stated that it needs to be dealt with on priority.

His comments came on Wednesday, days before the government is due to respond to the Supreme Court about petitions to legalise same-sex marriage.

In&nbsp;an interview with the&nbsp;Organiser, the English language mouthpiece of the RSS, Bhagwat said that LGBTQ people have the right to their own private and social space and added that the Hindu society generally doesn’t see them and the transgender as a problem.

"People with such proclivities have always been there; for as long as humans have existed... This is biological, a mode of life. We want them to have their own private space and to feel that they, too, are a part of the society. This is such a simple issue. We will have to promote this view because all other ways of resolving it will be futile," he said, suggesting that the Hindu organisation, which has been opposed to homosexuality and same-sex marriage, is softening its stand on the issue.

Citing Hindu scriptures and mythology as the basis of his support, Bhagwat said, "Without much hullabaloo, we have found a way with a humane approach to provide them social acceptance."

Homosexuality was decriminalised in India in 208 after the Supreme Court scrapped the colonial-era Section 377 law.

Despite that, the concept of homosexuality hasn’t found space in the mainstream and is still considered by many as a taboo topic. However, the community has found greater acceptance compared to before in the conservative country.

In the past, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has refused to legalise same-sex marriage. But Bhagwat’s remarks on the issue could most likely force the government to re-think on the matter.
