Bruno Fernandes calls out under-fire Man Utd manager Carrick after Como drubbing

Manchester United suffered a 2-1 defeat against Leeds at Old Trafford on Monday (Apr 13) after nearly four and a half decade as Michael Carrick lost first home game at interim manager of the Premier League side. The game, however, was marred by a controversy and a three-match ban for Man United's Lisandro Martínez being suspended for three matches. Martinez was given a red card in the match in addition to the ban after he pulled Dominic Calvert-Lewin's ponytail in the 56th minute of the match. Carrick says that the decision to suspend Martinez is 'shocking' and the club is most likely to appeal against it.
Why Martinez was given red-card vs Leeds?
The incident happened nearly 20 minutes in the second half when Martinez, behind Calver-Lewin, tugged at his ponytail which referee deemed as a red card offence and ousted the United player out of the pitch. Apart from being given the red card, Martinez was also suspended for three matches, a decision Manchester United may appeal against. Interim manager Carrick wasn't happy about the punishment doled out to Martinez and said: "The arm [is] in the face of Lisandro and he is off balance and grappling. He goes to touch his shirt and gets a red card for it.Also Read - New trial in football great Maradona's death begins in Argentina“It is not aggressive, there is no jolt, no tug. We have got to be careful where the game is going. It is a shocking decision, absolutely shocking. The red card, that is really concerning. I know he touched his hair. There is a difference to really aggressively touching it.”
What does the loss mean for United?
Despite the loss, United stay on third place on the points table with 55 points from 15 wins, 10 draws and 7 losses in 32 matches. Leeds, on the other hand, jumped to 15 the place out of 20 teams, with 36 points 8 wins, 12 draws, and 12 losses from 32 matches played. The win for Leeds, first against United a Old Trafford since 1981, has put Tottenham Hotspur further deep in relegation pit. The Spurs are 18th on the points table with 30 points from 7 wins, 9 draws and 16 losses in 32 matches. Last three teams in the Premier League, 18-20, get relegated to lower division Championship for the next season.

Michael Carrick frontrunner to become Manchester United interim manager: Reports

Manchester United's new interim manager Ralf Rangnick said the team's progress during his six-month tenure could determine whether he recommends himself to the Premier League club's board to continue as their permanent manager.

The 63-year-old German was appointed on Monday on a contract until the end of the season after the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and will work in a consultancy role for a further two years.

The former RB Leipzig boss takes charge of seventh-placed United for the first time at Friday's training session having been granted a work visa this week ahead of Crystal Palace's league visit to Old Trafford on Sunday.

"The people with whom I've spoken with, they've been very clear that it's a six-month role," Rangnick told reporters in his first news conference at the club.

"We've never spoken about what will happen in the summer. Right now, I'm fully aware they might be looking for a new manager. If they then speak with me about that, we'll see.

"If they ask me for my opinion, and... everything goes well, we develop the team, I might even make the same recommendation to the board I made at Leipzig twice, when I recommended to them it might be a good idea to keep working with me for one year."

Rangnick, who was in the stands when caretaker manager Michael Carrick guided United to a 3-2 win over Arsenal in his final game on Thursday, said he was confident he could get the squad firing on all cylinders again.

"It's about winning games and, in the end, I'm ambitious. We want to make the most successful season that is possible. Right now, we have to be realistic," Rangnick said. "The difference between us and the top three is big. But let's see.

"The major target for me is to bring more balance to the team. We conceded two goals yesterday and if you look at the total number of goals conceded, it's on average two a game.

Premier League: Michael Carrick to lead Man United against Arsenal as Ralf Rangnick awaits work visa

Manchester United coach Michael Carrick says Jose Mourinho is in an elite group alongside Alex Ferguson as one of the greatest managers of the past 30 years despite his current problems at Old Trafford.

The former midfielder, 37, took up a coaching role at the end of last season after a distinguished playing career at West Ham, Tottenham and United.

Mourinho will be hoping last weekend's thrilling 3-2 comeback win against Newcastle sparks a revival after a dismal run of results saw United slip well off the pace in the Premier League and exit the League Cup.

Carrick told Britain's Press Association that the most striking thing about the Portuguese boss was his track record in winning trophies over many years.

"He's managed to win trophies at United," said Carrick. "We're striving now to get back to it, but as a manager you can't hide from the fact about what he's done. It's up there with the very best.

"Fortunately for me, you look at the best managers over the last 25-30 years. You're picking the top three, top five -- two of them you'd say Jose or Sir Alex are right up there.

"I've been lucky enough to experience that and take what I can from both of them."

Carrick is hoping to become a manager in his own right and said he was trying to "learn from the great Jose Mourinho at close quarters".

Carrick's contemporaries Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have already embarked on managerial careers.

"You look at Frank (Lampard at Derby) and I know Stevie (Gerrard) has done a year with the younger lads at Liverpool, but he's gone straight in at Rangers and it looks like it comes natural to them.

"I'm in my position as I am at the moment and it feels good for me, so we'll see what the future brings."

Michael Carrick hails Mourinho as managerial 'great' alongside Ferguson

Michael Carrick is making an immediate switch from Manchester United's playing squad to the coaching team in time for Saturday's FA Cup final against Chelsea.

The former England midfielder hung up his boots on Sunday after United's final Premier League game of the season against Watford.

The following day he began his new job as a member of manager Jose Mourinho's coaching staff, with this weekend's clash against Chelsea at Wembley his first assignment.

"It changes overnight," Carrick said. "I am not training this week. I am going to jump on the staff."

The 36-year-old had other options as he approached the end of his playing career but the chance to work under Mourinho was too good to refuse.

"A couple of years ago I thought maybe it would be a good thing to spend time with the family, but then it's about timing and opportunities," said Carrick, who made 464 appearances for United over 12 years after earlier spells with West Ham and Tottenham.

"You never know what is going to be around the corner. As soon as this came up I didn't think twice.

"He is one of the best, he's been around for many years and it all fits in. I've been at this club, and it is such a great club, so I obviously know the club and the manager."

Carrick said he is considering moving into management one day but it is not something he intends to push for yet.

The midfielder was given a guard of honour by both teams on Sunday and had a hand in the only goal of the game, playing Juan Mata in behind the defence for the Spaniard to tee up Marcus Rashford.

He was substituted late in the game to a huge ovation, with supporters recognising his role in five Premier League title successes and one Champions League triumph.

Michael Carrick makes immediate switch to coaching role at Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick confirmed on Monday he will bring an end to his illustrious career at the end of the current season at the age of 36.

Carrick has won 18 trophies in 12 years at United, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.

However, he has featured in just four games this season having had a procedure to treat an irregular heart rhythm detected in a League Cup game against Burton Albion in September.

"There comes a time when, you like it or you don't like it, your body tells you it's time to stop playing football and that's pretty much where I'm at," Carrick said on Monday.

"It's fine, it's something you've got to accept so that is where I'm at."

Carrick is, though, expected to remain at United as part of Jose Mourinho's coaching staff next season.

"It's kind of been sorted," added Carrick. "We're still talking about it to be honest so there is nothing to totally confirm yet but it's looking likely."
