According to the IFAW, around 125 Atlantic white-sided dolphins became stranded off Cape Cod out of which at least 10 have died. The incident has prompted an intensive rescue effort.&nbsp;

The organisation said that it was assisting the dolphins stuck at The Gut or Great Island at the Herring River in Massachusetts, which they described as “the epicenter of mass strandings,” in a social media post.&nbsp;

The group said that with low tide at 11:23 am (local time), their staff and volunteers were in shallow water on foot attempting to herd the dolphins back out to deeper waters.&nbsp;

Additionally, the IFAW said it was also using three small vessels to continue herding efforts and underwater pingers to urge the dolphins to move towards deeper waters.&nbsp;

The group said at least 25 IFAW staff and 100 volunteers were on the scene. They are working with the support of Whale and Dolphin Conservation, the Center for Coastal Studies, AmeriCorps of Cape Cod and the New England Aquarium.

Twenty-three sets of twins graduate together from Massachusetts Middle School

A man was taken into custody after six people, including four girls, at a movie theater, were stabbed in separate attacks that may be connected, police in Massachusetts said.

Police said a man came into the AMC Braintree 10 south of Boston at about 6 pm Saturday and entered one of the theaters without paying.

The girls, ages 9 to 17, were inside the theater. The man, unprovoked, suddenly attacked them “without saying anything and without any warning” before running out, the Braintree Police Department said in a news release. The four suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and were taken to hospitals.

Video footage showed the man’s vehicle and a license plate, and the information was broadcast to law enforcement, police said.

Meanwhile, schools in Boston were closing and a parking ban was in effect until 4:00 pm (local time). Mayor Michelle Wu said the city’s homeless shelters would remain open.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee signed an executive order to shut all state government offices, on Tuesday, as well as banned tractor-trailer travel on all interstates and state roads starting at midnight.&nbsp;

The ban was in coordination with Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York, said McKee.&nbsp;

“Everyone’s frustrated,” Bretillon said. However, New York Mayor Eric Adams defended the decision saying it was necessary because of learning losses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Associated Press (AP) reported that the state shelters were stressed as 5,600 migrant families or 20,000 people, have arrived in Massachusetts. This is 80 per cent higher than just 3,100 families a year ago.&nbsp;

The migrants include children, pregnant women as well as infants. Healey informed that around 50 migrant families have arrived in the state shelters in the past 48 hours alone, further stretching the state’s shelter infrastructure.

“It's exponentially more than our state has ever served in our emergency assistance programme,” Gov. Maura Healey was quoted as saying by AP.

<h2>Gov. Healey calls on federal govt for help</h2>

The governor has now appealed for financial help from the federal government. She has also vowed to make efforts towards faster work authorisations so that immigrant families can quickly find jobs and become independent of state shelters.

“Our new arrivals are most eager to work. The last thing they want is to be dependent,” the governor wrote in a letter to the US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.

<h2>State launches migrant relief fund</h2>

Additionally, a new initiative has been introduced by the state to establish a migrant relief fund aimed at raising funds to provide assistance to migrants.

The contributions collected will be allocated to cover a wide spectrum of necessities and services for migrants. These include provisions such as food, clothing, diapers, and transportation, as well as essential services like health screenings, translation assistance, legal guidance, and English language classes.

<h2>Conservative groups in attacking mode</h2>

Paul Diego Craney, representing the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance, a conservative group, called on Gov. Healey and state legislators to revoke the state's right-to-shelter policy.

“Perhaps it is time for the governor to take a trip to the southern border to see firsthand the open southern border crisis,” he said in a statement.

Geoff Beckwith, the executive director of the Massachusetts Municipal Association, highlighted that over 80 cities and towns within the state have already experienced the impact of incoming migrants and have shown support for the emergency declaration.

A worker who was previously missing after a powerful explosion at a pharmaceutical chemical plant in Massachusetts, US, was found dead hours after the blast tore through the building, on Thursday (May 4). The incident in Newburyport has since prompted Democrat Senator Edward Markey to demand accountability from the plant’s owners.

The body of the worker was found by the search-and-rescue crews around 5:25 pm (local time), hours after the explosion took place in the morning, said acting Newburyport Fire Chief Stephen Bradbury who did not identify the victim. Bradbury described the blast as a “seven-alarm hazardous materials” event and said that the body was recovered from the building.&nbsp;

According to a local media report, the worker who passed away was a 61-year-old man. Images of the scene show the roof of the building destroyed and debris lying across the field around the plant.&nbsp;

The search and rescue operation was also hampered after given the plant’s structural integrity following the blast and high flames. Furthermore, four workers were taken to the hospital as a precaution but were found uninjured.

While authorities had assured that the plant will not affect the local population, one woman, as per the Associated Press, said she could taste chemicals on her lips. “I could smell chemicals in the air. I could taste it on my lips,” said 58-year-old, Nancy Gero, who works next door to the plant.&nbsp;

The explosion took place around 1:00 am at the Sequens/PCI Synthesis plant, said the officials. The blast blew a vat from the building 30 feet into a parking lot, Bradbury said in a news release.

According to the fire chief, five workers were inside the building at the time of the blast. “It was a very violent explosion,” said Bradbury. After the incident, PCI Synthesis in a statement said, “All our attention is focused on the situation of our employees.”&nbsp;

After the incident, Democrat Senator for Massachusetts took to Twitter and wrote, “This morning’s explosion at the Seqens pharmaceutical manufacturing plant is horrifying—and it's just the latest avoidable disaster at this facility, following years of serious violations, fines, and explosions.”&nbsp;

The cause of the explosion remains unknown including which, if at all, chemicals were involved. According to the officials from the state Department of Environmental Protection, the smoke from the fire blew over the industrial park and into a largely unpopulated area and reported some runoff from firefighting foam.&nbsp; 
 
However, this is not the first time that the chemical plant has come under scrutiny as a fire in 2021&nbsp;sent smoke pouring out of roof vents and prompted a hazardous materials team to respond, reported AP, citing a&nbsp;fire department statement released&nbsp;at the time. But now, advanced genetic testing has helped them solve the mystery. They recently found out that the victim was Patricia Ann Tucker, who was aged 28 and was a mother to a five-year-old son when she was murdered, without her family having any knowledge of the tragedy for decades.

The office of the district attorney in Massachusetts announced that the investigators had found out that the murder victim was Tucker, who was known to many as the “Granby girl”, a nickname given to her based on the area where her dead body was found.

As per the police information, the assailant shot Tucker in the temple after which she was dragged by her neck before her decomposed body, buried under a stump and leaves, was found by loggers on November 15, 1978.

Later, her body was buried in a grave marked “unknown”. Matthew Dale, Tucker’s son who is now 50 years old, said he spent his childhood in North Carolina without being sure about the reason for his mother's disappearance.

He added that, in his 30s, he had believed that she was dead, and hence, he had submitted his DNA to a database, if the authorities ever find her.

The people living in Newburyport have asked the City Council to replace the state flag and seal of Massachusetts, stating that the imagery used promotes the racist history of the state, according to a Fox News report.

As reported by Newburyport Daily News, a resolution was sent to the council on February 27 that asked them to support the Special Commission Relative to the Seal and Motto of the Commonwealth's work.

The commission had recommended that the flag and seal must be replaced to reflect Massachusetts' diverse residents. The resolution was referred on the same day to the General Government Committee in a 9-2 vote.

Vesey and Burciaga added that the resolution is being considered by dozens of other municipalities.

Vesey stated that the state seal appears to support the idea that white people are "in charge of this world and that “we have to subdue the Native American people" through a "colonising and violent depiction".

"One of the reasons that we can ignore this so easily is that our White supremacy culture has really allowed for the disappearance of the Native American world. We’re really trying to say that they are not gone. They are here among us, and we really need to not only recognise that but honour it," she stated.

Burciaga, meanwhile, said that the state flag and seal appear "problematic”. He added that the seal and the flag depict a colonial sword being grasped by a white hand over the head of a Native American person.

A US passenger was arrested for allegedly stabbing a flight attendant using a metal spoon and attempting to open an exit door while he was on board a United Airlines flight,&nbsp;prosecutors said on Monday.

Francisco Severo Torres, a 33-year-old resident of Massachusetts, was arrested on Sunday after the plane landed at Boston Logan International Airport after flying from Los Angeles, stated the US Attorney's Office for Massachusetts.

Torres, who lives in Massachusetts' Leominster, is facing charges of attempted interference with flight attendants and crew members using a dangerous weapon, it said in a statement.

As per the prosecutors, the plane's crew members noticed around 45 minutes before the plane was to land in Boston that someone had tried to open an emergency exit door.

Torres, who was sitting near the door, was confronted by the flight attendants and the captain was notified that "they believed Torres posed a threat to the aircraft," the prosecutors said.

Shortly afterwards, a flight attendant was allegedly attacked by Torres with a broken metal spoon, "hitting the flight attendant on the neck area three times," said the US Attorney's Office.

"Passengers then tackled Torres and he was restrained with the assistance of flight crew," it added.

United Airlines issued a statement saying that "no serious injuries were reported."

Following a three-month investigation, it was found the suspect was Nadeam Nahas, the report said.&nbsp;
