Liverpool kept pace with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League after a 2-0 win at home over local rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby. While the win late on Sunday means Liverpool are just a point behind City as they look to win four titles this season, Everton drop into the bottom three after Burnley`s win earlier in the day.

Liverpool had 82 per cent of the ball against their neighbours, but it was not until the 62nd minute that left-back Andrew Robertson opened the scoring with a header. Luis Diaz was the provider of Liverpool`s second goal with a spectacular overhead kick that sat up perfectly for Divock Origi to seal the win, Xinhua reports.

Earlier, Gabriel Jesus scored four goals as Manchester City cruised past relegation-haunted Watford 5-1.

The Brazilian scored in the 4th, 23rd and 52nd minutes, and also netted a 49th-minute penalty as Pep Guardiola`s side enjoyed an easy ride ahead of Tuesday`s Champions League semifinal first leg against Real Madrid.

Hassani Kamara gave Watford brief hope with his goal in the 28th minute, but Rodri`s 34th minute goal for City quickly put the game out of reach.

Christian Pulisic scored a 90th minute goal to give Chelsea a 1-0 win at home over West Ham and spare Jorginho`s blushes. The Brazilian had missed a penalty a minute earlier after Craig Dawson, who was sent off, pulled down Romelu Lukaku to deny him a goalscoring opportunity.

Arsenal moved fourth and virtually ended Manchester United`s slim hopes of a top-four finish with a 3-1 win at the Emirates Stadium, thanks to first half goals from Nuno Tavares and Bukayo Saka, who scored a penalty.

Although the 100th Premier League goal of Cristiano Ronaldo`s career gave United hope in the 34th minute, Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty for the visitors, and Granit Xhaka assured a big win for Arsenal with 20 minutes left to play.

Tottenham were lucky to take a 0-0 draw away to Brentford, who had former Spurs player Christian Eriksen in their starting 11.

Brentford had the best chances with Harry Kane clearing one ball off the line, while Ivan Toney hit headers off the woodwork.

Matej Vydra`s goal from the edge of the six-yard box gave Burnley their second win in two games as they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Turf Moor. The win lifts Burnley out of the bottom three and means they have taken two wins and a draw since Sean Dyche`s 10-year tenure as coach came to an end.

Newcastle United continued their excellent second half to the season and have won 10 of their last 14 games thanks to a 3-0 win away to Norwich that came from two goals from Joelinton and one from Bruno Guimaraes.

Brighton and Southampton shared four goals in an entertaining south coast derby, with James Ward-Prowse scoring in first-half injury time and in the 54th minute to cancel out Danny Welbeck`s early opener and Mohammed Salisu`s 44th minute goal for the home side.

Leicester City and Aston Villa drew a forgettable game 0-0, although the result at least ended a run of four consecutive defeats for the visitors.

Premier League: Liverpool's derby victory pushes Everton in drop zone

Manchester City regained their one-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a 3-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion while Arsenal upset London rivals Chelsea with a 4-2 victory at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Liverpool had taken over at the top of the table after their 4-0 demolition of Manchester United on Tuesday, meaning City could ill afford a slip-up at home to Graham Potter's side.

Pep Guardiola's team struggled to break down a well-organised Brighton defence in the opening 45 minutes but broke the deadlock through Algerian forward Riyad Mahrez in the 53rd minute.

Kevin De Bruyne burst forward from inside his own half, brushing off three challengers, before finding Mahrez who converted at the second attempt.

That opener settled City's nerves with the hosts scoring a second 12 minutes later as Phil Foden's effort from distance was helped past Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez by a deflection.

Bernardo Silva added a late third to round off the win that moved Pep Guardiola's side onto 77 points from 32 games.

Arsenal's victory, with two goals from Eddie Nketiah was a major boost in their bid to qualify for the Champions League via a top-four finish.

The win moves the Gunners level on 57 points with fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with both teams having played 32 matches and set to meet at Spurs on May 12.

Arsenal went ahead twice in a pulsating first half at Stamford Bridge, first when Nketiah pounced on a weak back pass by Andreas Christensen in the 13th minute and then when Emile Smith-Rowe finished off a flowing counter-attack in the 27th.

PEGGED BACK

But the visitors were quickly pegged back on both occasions by equalisers from Timo Werner and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Nketiah restored the visitors' lead in the 57th minute when he seized on another mix-up in Chelsea's defence to make it 3-2, stabbing the ball home after Thiago Silva's interception bounced into the Arsenal striker's path off Malang Sarr.

Chelsea searched for a third leveller but it was Arsenal's Bukayo Saka who rounded off the win when he converted a penalty in the 92nd minute after he was adjudged to have been fouled by Azpilicueta.

Chelsea stayed in third place on 62 points having played a game less than both Spurs and Arsenal.

At the bottom end of the table, Everton needed a stoppage-time equaliser from Richarlison to scrape a point at home to Leicester City and move four points clear of the relegation zone.

Harvey Barnes put the visitors in front in the fifth minute, poking home a pass from James Maddison from close range as Everton struggled to find their feet, and the home side did not register a shot on target in the first half.

Richarlison finally forced a save from Kasper Schmeichel in the 67th minute but he wasted several good chances before redeeming himself with a scuffed shot in the second minute of stoppage time at the end of the game to grab a point.

Everton are four points clear of 18th-placed Burnley with both teams having seven games to go. Managerless Burnley host Southampton at Turf Moor on Thursday.

Relegation worries are now a distant memory for Newcastle United who picked up their sixth straight home win with Miguel Almiron's first goal for the club in over a year earning them a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace to move Eddie Howe's side up to 11th.

Premier League: Manchester City beat Brighton to regain lead; Arsenal upset Chelsea

Manchester City star Oleksandr Zinchenko has once again spoken about the horrific scenes in his country Ukraine amid Russia's ongoing military invasion. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has left millions displaced and thousands dead as Ukrainians around the globe continue to watch in horror.

Zinchenko, who has been quite vocal in Russia's criticism amid Vladimir Putin's military aggression, opened up on the misery of fellow Ukrainians back home. The Manchester City defender lashed out at those denying the reality of the situation in his country and revealed horrifying details of the Russian military's brutality in Ukraine.

In an interview with the Guardian, Zinchenko said Russians have raped Ukrainian women, killed children and the dead bodies of many continue to lie on the streets in the country amid the ongoing invasion. The Man City star also claimed that Russians haven't even spared dogs in Ukraine and ate them during the war.

“It’s a nightmare. A shock to the whole world, the things they have done there. Terrible, scary things. They killed our civilians. They killed our children. They raped our women and girls. They killed our dogs and even ate them. I cannot even begin to describe how I feel about them," Zinchenko told the Guardian.

“I hate them so much, for everything they have done to the Ukrainian people and Ukraine. I hate the people in Russia who are trying to convince others that this is propaganda. It’s embarrassing. How can they say this?

"People send me the real pictures, the real facts. The bodies of our dead civilians were lying on the ground for two weeks. They have to take responsibility for this," he added.

Zinchenko slams ex-teammates at Russian club FC UFA

Zinchenko, who had signed from Manchester City in 2016, was playing for Russian Premier League club FC Ufa before heading to the English Premier League. He had spent two seasons with FC Ufa where he played alongside a number of Russian players. Lashing out at his ex-teammates from Russia, the left-back slammed them for not standing up against Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Stating that remaining silent means they are supporting what's happening in Ukraine, Zinchenko expressed his angst at his former teammates for not using their influence in stopping the war. Zinchenko said footballers in Russia could have done a lot had they decided to come together and speak up against the violence being inflicted in Ukraine.

“I have friends over there, a small circle, but now it has reduced almost to nothing. I’m so disappointed. The guys I know called me as soon as the invasion happened, texted me: ‘I’m so sorry Alex, but we can’t do anything.’ Of course you can. If you stay silent it means you support what is happening in Ukraine right now, and I can’t see why they would," said Zinchenko.

"Maybe they are scared because we see pictures on social media of Russians being taken to prison if they protest. But look at footballers in particular or anyone with a massive audience.

"Can you believe that, if all of them posted something on Instagram at the same time saying: ‘Guys, we are against the war, we need to stop it,’ they would all be arrested? Of course they would not. It’s such a shame that they say nothing," he added.

Premier League: Liverpool and Manchester City play out 2-2 draw in crucial encounter

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said the team will have to win the Champions League to seek recognition worldwide, but the Spaniard is "incredibly happy" with what the Premier League club have achieved so far.

Guardiola has led City to three Premier League titles, four League Cups and the FA Cup since taking over in 2016, but they are yet to become champions of Europe, coming closest after reaching the Champions League final last season.

For now City remain on track to win a treble this season, leading the Premier League by one point, reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup and also the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Manchester City have a slender lead from the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final after Kevin De Bruyne's 70th-minute goal earned them a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

It was a result City had to eek out against an Atletico side who had clearly travelled to England with the aim of simply denying Pep Guardiola's side opportunities and who failed to produce a single shot on target.

Diego Simeone's outfit had frustrated City throughout the first half with their deep lying defending and reliance on only the occasional counter to threaten the hosts.

City rotated the ball with their usual expertise and made it difficult for Atletico to push out from their deep defensive formation, while never over-committing themselves.

But the Premier League champions were unable to turn their total dominance of possession into clear chances with Aymeric Laporte having one of the best opportunities after the break, but the defender's header from a corner was off target.

Atletico's rare breaks served as a reminder to City that they had to keep some discipline, although when the Spaniards did fashion an opening Marcos Llorente failed to test Ederson.

City kept their shape and moved the ball well but it took the introduction of substitute Phil Foden for the home side to find the missing ingredient.

Foden, who came on with Jack Grealish and Gabriel Jesus, drew three defenders towards him before splitting the Spanish rearguard with a perfectly weighted pass to De Bruyne who slotted past goalkeeper Jan Oblak with a side-foot finish.

De Bruyne then had space for another attempt on goal, which was well blocked by defender Stefan Savic's outstretched foot.

The second leg will be held at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid next Wednesday but before then City have a crucial clash at home to Premier League title rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

HARD TASK

De Bruyne said it had been difficult to break down a team playing with such numbers behind the ball.

"It's very hard. They played with almost five at the back and with five in midfield. I recommend anyone that says anything ... that they try playing against that on the training ground.

"We have to stay composed and don’t try to get into their action. It is the way they play. One-nil is one-nil. I expect similar over there. If the game is tight they will have to attack a little bit more," added the Belgian.

Guardiola was pleased with the way his side had approached the contest.

"We played an incredible top side who are difficult to face but it is a good result," he said, while praising his players for avoiding some of the potential flash-points in the game.

"It is not easy to face a team with a lot of experience in this tournament. We will go there to score and try and win again," he added.

Simeone was full of praise for City and said the first half display was largely due to Atletico`s opponents rather than his tactics.

"We didn't play the way we wanted in the first half, we couldn't break out. It was a bit better after the break but City are the best team in the world. They have scored so many goals at home in the recent past," he said.

UEFA Champions League: Kevin De Bruyne strikes as Manchester City beat Atletico Madrid 1-0

Manchester City moved a point clear of title rivals Liverpool at the top of the Premier League standings with a convincing 2-0 win at relegation-threatened Burnley on Saturday.

Needing a win to reclaim top spot after Liverpool beat Watford earlier in the day, first half goals from Kevin de Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan with two assists from Raheem Sterling sealed all three points for Pep Guardiola's side.

City dominated possession throughout and they made a perfect start by taking a fifth-minute lead after De Bruyne pounced on Sterling's cushioned pass inside the box and pulled the trigger to find the top corner.

Sterling and De Bruyne were instrumental in doubling City's lead 20 minutes later when a quick one-two pass allowed the English forward to sprint down the right flank and cross into the box for Gundogan to score.

"We've played in these types of games for many years. We scored early on so that helped us a lot. But the game is never finished until you score the third or fourth," Guardiola said in a post-match interview with the Premier League.

"The pitch was so difficult because the grass was high, no water and everything was so slow. But we did well and won the game."

City had a wake-up call in the second half when Burnley nearly got one back as Maxwel Cornet's header was cleared off the line by Nathan Ake. Although Cornet was later flagged offside, the move spurred Burnley to press for a goal.

But City improved soon after and they could have scored more with Phil Foden wasting a couple of opportunities while substitute Gabriel Jesus, who has not scored a league goal since September, also failed to find the target.

Meanwhile, Burnley's fourth consecutive defeat leaves Sean Dyche's side 19th, but with games in hand over the relegation battlers.

"It's never a shock against Man City. Sometimes they can score at will if they're feeling it," Dyche told BBC.

"Our nemesis all season has been creating chances and not scoring goals... The second half showed signs of what we`re about, we've got to do that in the games coming up.

"We still have 10 games left and we're still in a fight... We have 10 efforts to get ourselves correct and move forward."

Premier League: De Bruyne, Gundogan strike as Man City reclaim top spot from Liverpool with 2-0 win vs Burnley

Liverpool leapfrogged champions Manchester City to the top of the Premier League table with a 2-0 win over Watford at Anfield on Saturday thanks to a first-half header by Diogo Jota and a late Fabinho penalty.

The hosts grabbed the lead moments after goalkeeper Alisson Becker denied Watford's Juraj Kucka with a sharp save, as Jota timed his run to perfection at the other end and nodded in a cross from Joe Gomez in the 22nd minute.

It was Portuguese forward Jota`s 14th league goal and 20th in all competitions this season, and the 25-year-old could have added to his tally shortly afterwards but for goalkeeper Ben Foster, who saved his effort from close range.

Substitute Fabinho made sure of the three points in the 89th minute by blasting his spot-kick into the top corner after the Video Assistant Referee spotted a foul by Kucka on Jota in the penalty area.

The result meant Liverpool have 72 points from 30 matches, two points more than City ahead of the two sides' blockbuster clash next weekend. Pep Guardiola's men can reclaim their lead and a one-point advantage if they beat Burnley later on Saturday.

Former Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson's relegation-threatened Watford pushed for an equaliser in the second half but could not prevent the home side from wrapping up a 10th straight league victory. Watford remain 18th with 22 points.

PL: Liverpool win to narrow gap with toppers Man City; Harry Kane strikes as Spurs ease past Brighton

Leaders Manchester City were held to a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace on Monday as the Premier League title race took yet another dramatic twist.

With nearest challengers Liverpool having cut the gap to three points with their victory at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, their eighth successive league win to remain in City's rear-view mirror, the onus was the champions to respond.

City dominated in the first half at Selhurst Park, but could not find a breakthrough.

The post was rattled in the opening period by Joao Cancelo and again after the break by Kevin De Bruyne as the visitors were left frustrated time and again.

Pep Guardiola's men threw everything at Palace late on, but could not find a winner as they dropped two valuable points in their quest to make it four league titles in the last five seasons.

The stalemate means Liverpool can close to within one point of City if they win their game in hand against Arsenal on Wednesday, raising expectations the title race will go right to the wire.

"Luck doesn't exist in football," Guardiola told the BBC. "We have to score goals and we didn't do it.

"We played to score goals and concede few. We struggled a little bit. The team that was there today was there before and will be there in the next game. I am very pleased with the performance and the way we played."

City soon settled into their rhythm and dominated possession as they often do in South London, creating several promising early openings – Bernardo Silva missing the most glaring of them.

Defender Aymeric Laporte also seemed to have left his shooting boots at home as he blazed over with the goal at his mercy, reacting first to the rebound after Cancelo's long-range shot had come out off the post.

Palace looked a danger on the break, with Wilfried Zaha firing wide from a good position, but otherwise it was one-way traffic, with City having 14 first-half efforts at goal.

The last side to stop City scoring in the Premier League was Palace in October, and another shutout was looking more likely as chances continued to come and go for City.

De Bruyne's arrowing second-half strike seemed destined for the bottom corner but came out off the upright, with Mahrez denied by a brilliant stop from Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita from the rebound.

Silva almost got on the end of a fizzing low cross but arrived a fraction too late, with City putting a bit too much on passes, or taking an extra touch at key moments.

Palace dug in and held on as they stretched their unbeaten run to five games in all competitions to stay 11th, but it is those watching on Merseyside who will have celebrated this result more than anyone else.

"When you play against City you have to concede chances," Palace manager Patrick Vieira told the BBC. "It's all about having your luck on the day but also putting in a shift as a team.

"We did that today. We fought for the luck and we got a point. We're happy with the performance."

Premier League: Title race heats up as Manchester City drop points against Newcastle United

Manchester City sailed through to the Champions League quarter-finals after they played out a 0-0 draw against Sporting in their last-16 second leg on Wednesday, progressing 5-0 on aggregate. City had already done the hard work in their thrashing of the Portuguese side in the first leg three weeks ago in Lisbon, and could take it easy against an inferior Sporting at the Etihad Stadium.

Coach Pep Guardiola could afford to make several changes to his starting team, with one of those players coming in - Raheem Sterling - going closest to scoring in the first half after his close-range effort was saved.

Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus, making his first Champions League start of the season, did have the ball in the net early in the second half, but his clever finish was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Paulinho almost earned Sporting victory late on, but it was not to be as City held on to ensure they have now reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in each of the last five seasons, the only English side to do so over this period.

The achievement was not lost on Guardiola as he looks to win the only major trophy that has eluded him during his time at City.

"The last decade, step by step, the club grew and for many years we were there in the Champions League and qualifying for the last 16," he told BT Sport.

"Now again we`re in the quarter-final and among the best eight teams in Europe. When I qualify for the quarter-finals, I enjoy it, when I qualify for the last 16, too. I know how difficult it is."

Sporting coach Ruben Amorim was certainly happy to see the back of City.

"We were very unlucky in the draw," he told Eleven Sports. "Last year we were eliminated by LASK Linz and this year by Manchester City, one of the best teams in the world.

"It`s always positive not to lose away to a powerful opponent like this."

Is it happening? Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Manchester United and join Lionel Messi at PSG - Reports

Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez scored two goals each as Manchester City restored their lead at the top of the Premier League to six points with a convincing 4-1 derby victory over Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

United had put up a decent fight in the first half, going in 2-1 down at the break, but City's quality showed after the interval with Ralf Rangnick's side looking increasingly demoralised.

City have 69 points from 28 games with Liverpool on 63 from one game less. United slip down to fifth place, a point behind Arsenal who beat Watford on Sunday and have three games in hand.

Belgian De Bruyne was outstanding, running the game from central midfield and then presenting himself as a threat in the box.

United were without Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani through injuries and surprisingly Rangnick opted to play Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes in forward positions.

City made the perfect start with De Bruyne putting them ahead in the fifth minute, slotting home a low pulled-back pass from Bernardo Silva after they overloaded the left side.

But United drew level through a superb curling shot from Jadon Sancho, who took his time and cut inside after a swift break before beating Ederson with his confident strike.

But Belgian De Bruyne restored City's advantage finding the target after Phil Foden had powered into the area and seen his shot parried out by David De Gea.

City dominated after the break and made it 3-1 when De Bruyne struck a corner deep to the edge of the box and Mahrez met it with a first-time drive which took a slight deflection off Harry Maguire.

Mahrez completed the victory with a goal that was initially flagged as offside but VAR found Alex Telles had played the Algerian onside before he latched on to an Ilkay Gundogan pass and blasted in off the shoulder of De Gea.

The scoreline was a fair reflection of City's dominance and manager Pep Guardiola was full of praise for his team.

"It was excellent from the first minute. We played really well and had to be patient in the first step," said the Spaniard.

"Football is emotions. It's tactics, definitely, but it's also emotions. Without the ball, we are a team with desire and passion to regain the ball from the first minute to the 90th," he added.

Rangnick felt his tactics had been the right way to take on City before the gulf in class became evident.

Manchester City's Ukraine international Oleksandr Zinchenko has questioned the refusal of Russia's leading footballers to speak out against their country's invasion of his homeland.

After Russia invaded Ukraine last week, FIFA and UEFA suspended the country from international tournaments, but none of the nation's top players has publicly criticised President Vladimir Putin's decision to go to war.

"I was surprised that no one, not one of them, from all of them" has said anything, Zinchenko told the BBC.

"Most of them play in the national team and they have a lot of followers on Instagram, Facebook, wherever. And they can, they can at least they can do something to stop this war. Because the people can hear them.

"I already know that they (are) scared. But they're scared of what? They're not gonna do anything with them. At least they can say their positions, but they don't, they just ignore it. I don't know why."

Zinchenko was on the bench for City's first game after the invasion against Everton before being named captain for the FA Cup win over Peterborough on Wednesday. The 25-year-old said are never far from what is going on in his homeland.

"I'll be honest, if not for my daughter, my family, I would be there," he said.

"I'm so proud to be Ukrainian, and I will be forever for the rest of my life. And when you're watching the people, how they fight for their lives.

How Premier League clubs united to express solidarity with Ukraine amid war with Russia

As Ukraine continues to suffer after facing a full-fledged Russian military invasion, people across the globe have come together to extend their support for the grieving nation. Several sports stars and clubs have also expressed solidarity with the nation with messages of peace and 'no war'.

On Saturday, English Premier League (EPL) clubs Manchester City and Everton also showcased their support for Ukraine and the people of the country. While City players were spotted wearing shirts with the words 'NO WAR' written on the front and the back, the Everton players held a Ukrainian flag over their shoulders ahead of the start of the game.

While the two clubs expressed solidarity with Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia, there was a heartwarming moment shared between Ukrainian duo Oleksandr Zinchenko and Vitaliy Mykolenko ahead of the game. The two play for Manchester City and Everton respectively, however, the duo kept the club rivalry aside and were seen sharing an emotional hug.

The emotional embrace of the duo soon went viral on social media and became a major talking point ahead of the game as more support poured in for Ukraine and its people on social media.

Premier League: Phil Foden's goal helps Man City restore six-point lead, Watford draw against Man Utd

The 2019-20 winners Liverpool narrowed the gap with Premier League leaders Manchester City to just three points after a thumping 6-0 win at home to Leeds United. Two penalties from Mohamed Salah and a close-range finish from Joel Matip put Liverpool 3-0 up at the break against a rival that, as usual, looked lively in attack and vulnerable in defense.

Sadio Mane netted a fourth for Liverpool in the 80th minute after Salah and Jordan Henderson combined to give the Senegalese forward an open goal on Wednesday night. There was still time for two more goals, as Mane netted his second and Liverpool`s fifth in the 90th minute from close range. Virgil van Dijk then added a sixth with a powerful header from a corner as his side sounded out a warning to Pep Guardiola`s Manchester City, reports Xinhua.

City are at the top of the table with 63 points from 26 matches with Liverpool now moving to 60 off 26. Chelsea are placed third with 50 points but have a match to play.

Although Moussa Sissoko quickly canceled out Jean-Phillipe Matete`s 15th-minute opener for the visitors, Conor Gallagher continued his excellent form with a 42nd-minute effort to restore Palace`s lead and two late goals from Wilfried Zaha gave the final score a sheen that flattered the visitors.

Premier League: Liverpool beat Leeds to move to within 3 points of table-toppers Man City

When a relentless Manchester City pipped Liverpool to claim the Premier League crown in 2019 it was widely regarded as one of the most epic title races in top-flight history.

After a stunning plot twist in the latest round of fixtures, this season's run-in has the potential to be every bit as compelling with City and Liverpool the protagonists again.

When Liverpool stumbled around Christmas, dropping seven points in three games, it looked for all the world as though Pep Guardiola's City were running away with it.

Churning out win after win the champions opened a 12-point lead in January while Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was having to make do without forward duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane -- both away at the African Cup of Nations.

Liverpool began their game struggling Norwich City on Saturday nine points adrift with a match in hand, but when they still trailed to Joel Matip's fluke own goal with under half an hour left it appeared they were about to suffer a knockout blow.

Mane, Salah and Luis Diaz turned it around, however, and later in the day City were stunned by out-of-form Tottenham Hotspur, losing 3-2 at home -- their first defeat since October ending a run of 14 wins and a draw in 15 games.

"It looks like we could have title race" chimed former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher in his role as Sky Sports pundit. Even with his red-tinted glasses on, he is right.

Liverpool, who have won their last eight games in all competitions, host Leeds United on Wednesday.

Win that and they will be three points behind City with both teams having 12 games left to play.

EPIC FINALE

Throw in the fact that their goal differences are almost identical and that City host Liverpool on April 9, no wonder people are recalling the epic finale to the 2018-19 season.

At the same juncture of that season, Liverpool were leading with 65 points from 26 games, with City on 62.

If Liverpool beat Leeds it will be 63-60 in City's favour.

The Tottenham result was more than likely a blip for City and they will no doubt start compiling another winning run, but Liverpool are building the sort of momentum Guardiola's side enjoyed when winning their last 14 games in 2018-19 to claim the title with 98 points to Liverpool's 97.

"Saturday's swing underlines why you can't hand out the Premier League prizes in January or February," former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy said in the Mail on Sunday.

"The truth is Manchester City and Liverpool are closely matched so a one-club procession was never on the cards. Either would be worthy champions. It promises to be a fascinating race and the weekend added to the intrigue."

Liverpool, who have the distraction of the League Cup final this weekend against Chelsea, play Manchester United, West Ham and Arsenal before what could be a seismic title showdown with City on April 9.

Guardiola said this month his team will require close to 100 points to claim a fourth Premier League crown in five seasons, and with Liverpool's title destiny back in their own hands, as it is for City, few would disagree.

Manchester City's stumble against Tottenham Hotspur might pave way for another epic title duel

Antonio Conte praised his Tottenham Hotspur side's ability to turn defence into attack as they shrugged off a dreadful recent run to stun Premier League leaders Manchester City with a Harry Kane-inspired 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

After three successive league defeats, Tottenham's top-four ambitions were fading and Conte's honeymoon period since taking charge in November was well and truly over.

But the Italian, who has been under the spotlight all week after an interview in which he appeared to suggest Tottenham had been left weakened in the transfer window, masterminded the "perfect game" to stop the Man City juggernaut.

Tottenham only had 28% of possession against City, but defended diligently and somehow always looked a threat on the counter-attack with Kane, who scored twice including the 96th minute winner, linking superbly with Son Heung-min.

City had made it 2-2 in stoppage time through Riyad Mahrez's penalty, and it looked likely that the leaders would even snatch a last-gasp win, but Tottenham had other ideas as they revived their hopes of challenging for the top four.

"You know when you play Manchester City you will concede 70% of possession. But I say to my players that when you are defending, in your mind you must always be attacking. In your mind you want to win the ball and attack," Conte, who had not lost three league games in a row as manager for 12 years, said.

"To have this thought, in the final minutes, their goal could have killed you. Instead my players wanted to win.

"I think in every moment of the game my team wanted to attack them. Every time we had the ball I was thinking we could hurt them."

The surprise win lifted Tottenham back into seventh spot and with games in hand over the likes of West Ham United and Manchester United, they are back in the hunt for the top four.

But Conte knows that one big result will be pointless unless they can produce a much higher level of consistency.

"This win has to give us confidence, to trust the work we are doing together," the former Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan boss said. "But this is a process."

January signing Dejan Kulusevski, handed his first Premier League start, scored Tottenham's opening goal and impressed along with fellow new signing Rodrigo Bentancur.

But it was the old combo of Kane and Son Heung-min which really tormented City. Son set up Kane's first goal, the 36th time they have combined for a Premier League goal, equalling the record of Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard for Chelsea.

Turn defence into attack: Antonio Conte masterminds brilliant win against Manchester City

Liverpool have the chance to exert some pressure on Premier League title favourites Manchester City on Saturday but manager Juergen Klopp says he does not waste one minute thinking about Pep Guardiola's side.

Victory over relegation battlers Norwich on Saturday would allow Liverpool to close the gap on City to six points, although City are at home later against struggling Tottenham Hotspur.

"Out of all the problems I have, the smallest one is Man City. There is no minute when I think about them," Klopp told reporters at his news conference on Friday.

Of more concern to Klopp is the ankle injury sustained by Diogo Jota during the 2-0 Champions League win away at Inter Milan on Wednesday.

"He is not available this week and still needs further assessment," Klopp said.

"It's something with the ligaments around the ankle. Everything is possible. It could go quick or the other way. We have to wait but no chance for this weekend."

Liverpool have won their last four games in the league and will be expected to sweep past a Norwich side who have given themselves a chance of surviving with a recent resurgence before last weekend's defeat by Manchester City.

Klopp said he respects the Norfolk side's philosophy.

"They never stop believing they can stay in the league. I admire that. You can see it in how they play. If you let them play, they play," Klopp said.

"If you give them a chance to get in behind your last line, they will go. We have to be everywhere 100%. We need a really good set-up."

While deprived of Jota on Saturday, Klopp still boasts a formidable array of firepower with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all available and his biggest dilemma is who to leave on the bench.

He said the attitude of his players to not being in the starting lineup made his job easier.

"Be angry or disappointed with me, no problem. But show up. Make the decisions difficult and don't drop in training. But that's never happened. The group is incredible. If the players want to talk to me, it comes after the game," Klopp said.

He pointed to the response Roberto Firmino showed when coming off the bench to score the opener against Inter.

"Bobby could be in each eleven every single day because of his quality. It was one of the most important away goals we've scored. It calmed everything down and we got the momentum back," he said.

"If you knew him better, you'd be more positive about him. He`s an incredible person," Klopp said.

Fans do a lot for their favourite player. Over the years, we have heard several stories where a fan has gone out of his, or her, comfort zone to express love and gratitude for a particular player or team. Recently, a six-year-old young boy won hearts on the internet with his heartwarming note for his favourite player, i.e. Swindon Town Football Club (STFC)'s striker Harry McKirdy.

The youngster, known as Joe, wrote to the club revealing he cannot afford to attend matches because his mother “has no money for food”. In addition, the boy explained that his family doesn't have enough money as his mother has to pay for his “dinner at school.” “I like Swindon Town Harry McKidy. I will come one day,” the handwritten note read.

Receiving his note, the Swindon Town FC's official Twitter handle shared a post and captioned it, "We have received this letter from Town fan Joe, aged 6 and a half. We'd really love to get in touch with Joe, but we don't have a return address. If anyone recognises the writing or thinks they know who Joe is, please email supporters@swindontownfc.co.uk"
