Manchester City remained on Liverpool's tails at the top of the Premier League by seeing off Burnley 2-0 at the Etihad thanks to goals from Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola's men were far from their fluent best, but did enough to remain just one point behind the leaders.

Silva snapped up the rebound after Nick Pope denied Phil Foden early on before De Bruyne's blast made the game safe 20 minutes from time.

Raheem Sterling's suggestion he could look to leave City if he is not afforded more minutes caught Guardiola unaware when he faced the media on Friday.

Guardiola responded by handing the England international a rare Premier League start this season among five changes from a 2-2 draw at Liverpool before the international break.

But Sterling struggled to make an impact in a disjointed first 45 minutes from the hosts.

"After the international break we take the victory and look what's next," said Guardiola.

"All the guys gave everything. It doesn't matter if the performance is good or not, it's important that you fight for your teammates and everyone was incredible."

Silva continued his bright early season form as his side's standout performer.

The Portuguese started the move for the opening goal by picking out Foden at the edge of the area and when his shot was parried by Pope, Silva followed up to smash home the rebound.

Burnley had lost 5-0 on their four previous visits to the Etihad and Pope spread himself to save brilliantly from Joao Cancelo moments later to prevent the floodgates opening once more.

But it was the Clarets who came closest to scoring as the half-time whistle approached.

Maxwel Cornet scored four goals in three appearances for Lyon against City in the Champions League and the Ivorian should have been the scourge of the English champions again.

Zack Steffen, deputising for Ederson due to his late return from international duty with Brazil, saved a one-on-one with Cornet before the forward blasted a second attempt over.

Josh Brownhill then fired just wide a good chance to equalise before the break.

Burnley were also unfortunate when Aymeric Laporte was shown just a yellow card for a dangerous sliding challenge on Dwight McNeil.

City upped the tempo at the start of the second half with Sterling restored to his favoured position on the left of the front three.

Riyad Mahrez hit the bar from Sterling's cut-back before Foden just did not get enough on an attempted lob over Pope.

The second goal City craved to make sure of the three points also had a hint of controversy.

Again Burnley were less than impressed with referee Martin Atkinson as Mahrez collided with Ashley Westwood to allow the ball to break to De Bruyne, who crashed the ball high past Pope.

Chris Wood should have halved the visitors' arrears when he blasted over with just Steffen to beat, but his lack of composure showed why Burnley remain without a league win this season.

"I'm a realist, you have to get points on the table," said Burnley boss Sean Dyche. "You have to find a way to win and you have to find that however it might come."

Manchester City prove too strong for Burnley, defeat them 2-0

From Saudi PIF to Sheikh Mansour: Top five richest football club owners in the world

Mohamed Salah's wonderful individual goal against Manchester City, in Liverpool's 2-2 draw with the champions on Sunday, will still be talked about in half a century`s time, his manager Jurgen Klopp said.

Salah, who had created the first goal for Sadio Mane, restored Liverpool's lead, making it 2-1 after twisting away from Joao Cancelo, leaving Bernardo Silva on the floor and dribbling past Aymeric Laporte before a clinical right-foot finish.

"Only the best players in the world score goals like this. It was the first touch, the first challenge he wins, the going there and putting it on his right foot and finishing the situation off like he did. Absolutely exceptional," said Klopp.

Premier League-Mohammad Salah goal will be remembered in 50 years, says Jurgen Klopp

Manchester City came from behind twice to earn a 2-2 draw with Liverpool in a breathless and pulsating Premier League encounter at Anfield on Sunday.

All four goals came in a second half packed with the high-quality, high-tempo, end-to-end football that makes the Premier League so popular globally.

Sadio Mane had put Liverpool ahead before Phil Foden equalised only for Mohamed Salah to restore the home side's advantage with a wonderful solo goal.

But Kevin De Bruyne's 81st-minute equaliser ensured the teams shared the points and left Liverpool in second place on 15 points, one behind leaders Chelsea.

Pep Guardiola's City are in third spot on 14 points, level with Manchester United, Everton and Brighton &amp; Hove Albion.

"What a game. That's the reason (over) the last years Man City and Liverpool are always there because we try to play in this way. Unfortunately we couldn't win -- but we didn't lose," said the Spaniard.

"That's why the Premier League is the best. It was great, really great."

City will look back with regret on their failure not to make more of their first-half domination when the visitors toyed with Juergen Klopp's side for the 20 minutes before the interval.

James Milner, filling in for Trent Alexander Arnold at right-back, had a torrid half, faced with Phil Foden and Jack Grealish and receiving little help from his team mates.

A remarkable piece of mazy dribbling from Bernardo Silva created a chance for Foden in the 21st minute but his shot was straight at Alisson who parried the ball.

City felt they should have had a penalty when Milner appeared to push Foden in the back but the appeal was waved away by referee Paul Tierney -- the first of a series of decisions which infuriated Guardiola.

Foden was causing Liverpool constant problems and De Bruyne should have found the target with a diving header from his cross to the back post.

DETERMINED REDS

Somehow Liverpool survived to the break without conceding and they came out for the second half determined to shift the momentum in the game.

They did just that when they grabbed the lead in the 59th minute as Salah skipped away from Joao Cancelo and threaded the ball into the path of the sprinting Mane who confidently fired past goalkeeper Ederson.

But City were level 10 minutes later when Gabriel Jesus cut in from the right, taking four Liverpool defenders out of the game, before finding Foden who drilled the ball into the far, bottom corner of the net.

Neither side were in the mood to settle for a point with the home fans roaring on their team and City sensing there were more opportunities to come.

The goal that restored Liverpool's lead was one of rare quality -- Salah twisting and turning into the box to lose Cancelo and Aymeric Laporte before firing home for the seventh straight game in all competitions, the Egyptian showing the deft touch, sharp movement and clinical finishing that have made him such a crowd favourite.

But once more City responded, the influential Foden again finding space on the left but, this time, cleverly pulling the ball back to the edge of the box for Kevin De Bruyne whose curling shot took a slight deflection off Joel Matip and beat Alisson.

There was still time for an outstanding piece of defending from City midfielder Rodri, whose superb block kept out a goal-bound effort from Fabinho after Ederson had dropped a cross.

Klopp made no attempt to sugar-coat his team's first-half display.

"We were too passive with and without the ball and played right into City's hands. That was the worst half we have played against them," he said.

"I was more than pleased when I heard the whistle for halftime because we had to adjust a lot of things and we did.

"Second half was completely different. If we only played the second half I would have loved to have won but with the first half I am happy with the point," he said.

Liverpool skipper said: "There`s no doubt that today's game is our biggest of the season so far. The Premier League table tells us this, recent history and the aims of the two clubs tells us this."

Premier League: Liverpool's biggest game of season so far, says Jordan Henderson ahead of clash with Man City

Pep Guardiola on Friday credited Jurgen Klopp with making him a better manager before this weekend's top-of-the-table Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield.

The two head coaches have won the last four Premier League trophies, with City claiming three, and a fierce rivalry has developed between the clubs.

Manchester City fended off Liverpool's 2018/19 title challenge despite the Reds amassing 97 points -- a title-winning total in all but one previous Premier League season.

Guardiola and Klopp were also dugout rivals in Germany's Bundesliga between 2013 and 2015 as the Spaniard's Bayern Munich dominated at the expense of Klopp's Borussia Dortmund.

The rivalry is set to continue on Sunday as table-topping Liverpool host second-placed City, who are only one point behind.

"His (Klopp's) teams helped me to become a better manager. He put me at another level, to think about it and to prove myself to be a better manager, to try to beat them," Guardiola said.

"That is the reason why I am still in this business. Some managers -- and Jurgen is one of them -- challenge you to make a step forward."

Klopp's Liverpool have been tough to beat at Anfield, with the Reds going 68 league games without defeat at home between April 2017 and January 2021.

Manchester City's 4-1 win at Anfield last season was their first victory on Liverpool turf in 18 years and has been attributed to the game being played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But Guardiola insisted his team was relishing a vibrant Anfield and that any hostile atmosphere would not prevent his team from playing their game.

"I am very pleased Anfield is full again. We can enjoy a fantastic atmosphere and hopefully we can handle it," he added.

"I am sure the players enjoy (more) to play with fans in Anfield than without. Everything is more alive, more difficult."

Left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will be missing from Guardiola's squad on Sunday and will not be available until after October's international break.

Pep Guardiola says Jurgen Klopp has made him a better manager

It was a moment that Paris Saint-Germain fans had been waiting for since the arrival of Lionel Messi in mid-August, and finally it came in style and on a big occasion.

In front of nearly 50,000 home supporters on Tuesday, the Argentine superstar scored his first goal for his new club, helping the Ligue 1 giants take a 2-0 revenge over English Premier League champions Manchester City, to whom they lost in the semifinals of last season`s Champions League.

The 34-year-old forward sparked in the 74 minutes, running the ball into the front and after a good one-two with Kylian Mbappe, he found the net with his iconic left-foot strike.

The goal sent the packed Parc des Princes into raptures with deafening roars hovering over the stadium and the crowd chanted by the scorer`s name, Xinhua reports.

"It was a perfect night against a great opponent. For us, it was very important to win this game after Brugge," said Messi, who has played three matches for PSG before this week but failed to open his scoring account.

"I am very happy to have scored. I haven`t played much recently," Messi added. "I am adapting little by little. What is important is to keep winning."

It was Messi`s 121st goal in the Champions League and 27th in 35 appearances against the English teams - far more than any other player. With this goal, the six-time Ballon d`Or winner has scored in 17 consecutive Champions League seasons, equalling a record set by Karim Benzema just minutes earlier in another clash.

"I`ve spent 20 years watching him score goals from the other side of the opposite pavement and it`s the first time he scores for a team I manage so I had to celebrate," PSG`s head coach Mauricio Pochettino said.

"You need this type of performance and players like him need to feel the back of the net. He needs to create links within the team after 20 years in Barcelona. He`s feeling different things, there`s a lot of new feelings for him."

French midfielder Idrissa Gueye put the hosts ahead only eight minutes into the game. Mbappe dribbled from the right and Neymar missed his cutback, but Gueye appeared in the right place and fired the ball into the top corner.

Pep Guardiola`s side was close to an equalizer in the 26th minute but Raheem Sterling`s header was refused by the bar and Bernardo Silva`s shot hit the woodwork again.

"They can take the space, they are exceptional players, like Messi-Suarez-Neymar at Barca," Guardiola said after the match, which was City`s first Champions League group defeat since September 2018, when they lost 2-1 to Lyon, before an 18-game unbeaten run.

"It`s hard to control Messi for 90 minutes. It is difficult to stop him and we had to minimize the opportunities for him to touch the ball. Tonight we did what we know how to do, good or bad, but we are what we are. Tonight there was also Verratti who was extraordinary and managed to find connections with Neymar."

What is important is to keep winning." It was Messi`s 121st goal in the Champions League and 27th in 35 appearances against the English teams - far more than any other player. He`s feeling different things, there`s a lot of new feelings for him." French midfielder Idrissa Gueye put the hosts ahead only eight minutes into the game. Mbappe dribbled from the right and Neymar missed his cutback, but Gueye appeared in the right place and fired the ball into the top corner. Manchester City were held to a frustrating goalless draw at home by Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday, despite being handed a reprieve when a VAR review led to a penalty and a red card for Kyle Walker both being overturned.

After an uneventful first half where City were well below par, Southampton thought they had been handed a golden chance to edge in front early in the second period as they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Adam Armstrong.

To make matters worse for City, Walker was sent off for the foul, only for referee Jon Moss, following a VAR intervention, to overturn both the red card and the awarding of the spot kick.

Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden were both summoned from the bench as City pressed for a winner, which they thought they had grabbed at the death through Raheem Sterling, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

The result means City fall three points behind leaders Liverpool in second place, ahead of third-placed Manchester United, who are in action at West Ham United on Sunday, on goal difference.

Southampton's fourth draw from five league matches this season keeps them 15th.

Guardiola's side came into the contest having scored five goals in each of their previous three home league games, as well as six in the Champions League in midweek.

But the Spaniard's five changes to the side who won 6-3 against RB Leipzig on Wednesday seemed to have a detrimental effect, with the champions failing to create any openings of note in the first half.

A sloppy City did not improve in the second half, and they were carved open by Armstrong, who appeared to be upended by Walker as he was about to shoot just after the hour mark.

As Walker headed for the tunnel, referee Moss was asked to review his decision on the pitchside monitor, and elected to change his mind, much to the relief of a frustrated Etihad.

The let-off got the crowd - who gave Guardiola a warm welcome despite the City coach's comments in midweek urging fans to show up in greater number - off their seats, but it failed to galvanise the players.

The only shot on target City had in the entire match was Foden's header in the 90th minute, which was well saved by an otherwise untroubled Alex McCarthy in the away goal, with Sterling reacting first to the rebound to score what he thought was the winner.

The lineman's flag denied the England international the glory, however, with VAR confirming that the decision was the right one.

Manchester City centre back Ruben Dias will be one of five players sharing the captain's armband this season, manager Pep Guardiola said.

Dias joined City from Benfica last year and was a mainstay of Guardiola's defence as he helped the club win the Premier League title.

The Portugal defender, named Premier League Player of the Season as well as England's Footballer of the Year in a stellar debut campaign, led the team in Wednesday's 6-3 thrashing of RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

"Everyone has to be their own leader," Guardiola told the club website&nbsp;on Friday. "Every season we make the selection of captains. The players and backroom staff make the decision.

"Eleven months and one week we are all here together and they know who are the best to represent the team. We all choose our five captains."

Dias, 24, said he was proud to be named one of the captains and ready for the responsibility.

"It's definitely a big responsibility and I will do my best to be there for everyone," he said.

Pep Guardiola says defender Ruben Dias added to Manchester City's leadership group

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said that he "will not apologise" for urging the supporters to show up in greater numbers and fill empty seats at Etihad Stadium for the Premier League match against Southampton on Saturday.&nbsp;

"I would like more people to come to the next game on Saturday," Guardiola told BT Sport as he looked a bit frustrated by the turnout for Manchester City's 6-3 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League clash on Wednesday, which was watched by over 38,000 fans — well below the Etihad's capacity of about 54,000.&nbsp;

He had further added, "We will need the people next Saturday, please, because we will be tired. I invite all our people to come next Saturday, 3pm, and watch the game."

'I'm not going to apologise,' says Pep Guardiola for asking more fans to attend Southampton match

Manchester City`s previous Champions League campaign was not a "failure" despite their loss to Chelsea in the final, manager Pep Guardiola said ahead of their Group A opener against RB Leipzig on Wednesday.

City were denied their first Champions League title after Chelsea`s 1-0 win in Porto in May, after which Guardiola was criticised for his team selection.

The 50-year-old said City used the disappointment of their quarter-final exit to Olympique Lyonnais in 2019-20 as a catalyst to reach the final last season, and he hopes that the result against Chelsea will similarly aid their progress.

"Man City made a step forward last season, we improved a lot," Guardiola told a news conference before Wednesday`s game at the Etihad. "We had 13 games and we won 11. We played incredibly well in Porto when we drew and deserved to win.

"People can say Man City was a failure but it was an incredible achievement last season playing really well in many of the games and losing against a big contender. The players have feelings and soul and it hurts when you cannot achieve something. For them, it`s a new challenge to try. These guys win three of last four Premier League (titles) and we always have the feeling we can do better."

City are in a tricky Group A alongside Paris St Germain, Belgian side Club Brugge and Leipzig, and Guardiola emphasised the need for his team to get off to a good start at home. Guardiola, who won the Champions League twice as Barcelona manager, added that the competition is now without a clear favourite owing to its unpredictability.

"There are many strong teams. It is completely different to when I started with Barcelona. The group stage is difficult. Leipzig are always complicated," he said.

"It is so important to start well, especially at home. When you have such a tough schedule, people go with national teams and come back with injury, and have to recover for a long time, you have to think about it day by day."

Pep Guardiola denies Manchester City were Champions League failures last season

Pep Guardiola denied on Friday that he will definitely leave Manchester City when his current contract expires in 2023.

The City manager was quoted after speaking at a Brazilian business forum held over Zoom that he would leave the club after seven years at the helm.

However, Guardiola clarified that his intention is to take a break from the game when he eventually does leave City, whether that be in two years' time or further in the future.

"I am not thinking to leave after two years. I can leave in two months if the results aren't good or the organisation isn't happy with me. I can leave in three months or five years," Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's clash with Arsenal.

"What I said is after my period at City I will take a break. It can be in one month, two years, five years. Right now I don't have reasons to leave."

Into his sixth season in Manchester, Guardiola is already serving the longest stint of his managerial career after four years at Barcelona and three seasons with Bayern Munich.

City have won three Premier League titles in his previous five seasons and reached the Champions League final for the first time in May.

City will face an Arsenal side at the Etihad looking for their first point of the Premier League season.

Back-to-back defeats to Brentford and Chelsea have put Arsenal boss and Guardiola's former assistant Mikel Arteta under pressure.

But Guardiola insisted Arteta needs time after spending over £130 million on five new players.

Pep Guardiola dismisses talk of 2023 departure from Manchester City

Cristiano Ronaldo was left out of Juventus' XI for the side's opener in the Serie A match of the 2021-22 season, raising speculations about his future. Since then, reports have emerged out stating that Manchester City is in-line to bid for the Juventus superstar, who is certain to part ways with the Italian club despite less than 12 months still left in his contract.

Thus, Ronaldo's&nbsp;potential return to the Premier League looks on cards even though Cityzens are yet to table a formal bid. However, as per a report in The Guardian, the Premier League champions are expected to submit one in the coming hours after Ronaldo has stated that he wants to leave Juventus and won't be a part of the side's clash versus Empoli, on Saturday (August 29).&nbsp;

For the unversed, Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, was in Turin on Wednesday (August 25) to discuss the former Manchester United forward’s future after weeks of speculation, with Juventus understood to want a fee of between €25 and €30m. While the negotiations are still on and nothing has been finalised yet, talks remain on the positive note as the former Man United recruit may well feature for his old Premier League club's arch-rival in the near future.

Should Ronaldo arrive in Man City, the club can see Raheem Stirling leave the Etihad Stadium while Portugal's Bernando Silva is another candidate who could part ways with the club, if suitable bids are received.&nbsp;

Earlier in the week, England captain Harry Kane also broke his silence on speculations regarding his transfer to Man City. The 28-year-old stated that he remains committed to Tottenham Hotspur and helping them achieve success.

In what comes as a shocking development, Manchester City's defender&nbsp;Benjamin Mendy has been charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, police claimed on Thursday (August 26). So far, Man City has won and lost one game each. They lost 1-0 to Harry Kane-less Tottenham whereas bounced back in style to thrash Norwich 5-0 in their following encounter.

Cristiano Ronaldo bids goodbye to Juventus teammates as transfer talk with Man City intensifies: Reports

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is likely to leave the Premier League champions when his contract expires in 2023 as he wants to take a break before venturing into international football, the Spaniard said on Wednesday.

"The next step will be a national team, if there is a possibility," Guardiola was quoted by Spanish daily Marca.

"After seven years at this club, I think I`m going to have a break. I will need to rest after being somewhere so many years and also stop to evaluate what we`ve done and to try to learn from other coaches.

"If, during this process of stopping, there is a chance to coach a national team then I think I`d like that. I`d like to coach at a European Championship or Copa America or World Cup. I`d like to experience that."

Former midfielder Guardiola has won three league titles with City and as many with previous clubs Bayern Munich and Barcelona as manager. But the Champions League trophy has eluded him at City after he lifted two at Barca.

Guardiola also won six league titles and the 1992 European Cup with Barcelona as a player, having scored five goals in 47 internationals for Spain.

Premier League: Liverpool and Brighton joint top, Manchester City rebound

Pep Guardiola wants&nbsp;Manchester City's newcomer Jack Grealish to follow&nbsp;teammate Raheem Sterling and become a 'goal machine' for the team.&nbsp;

Grealish opened his goal score for City on his home debut against Norwich as the Premier League champions defeated Norwich City 5-0 on Saturday (August 21).&nbsp;

Guardiola believes Grealish, who joined&nbsp;from Aston Villa for £100million this summer, will score many more goals if he adapts his game just like Sterling. &nbsp;

"If he gets the mentality to score goals like Raheem, he can score more," said Guardiola, who looked happy with Grealish's goal.&nbsp;

"When Raheem was here when I first arrived he didn't have goals in his mind and we immediately changed his arrival," he added.&nbsp;

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola's reaction to Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski question is unmissable. If recent rumours are to be believed, City has a possible interest in Bayern's goal merchant after some reports suggested that Lewandowski was keen on a move.&nbsp;

In a recent media interaction, Guardiola was asked about the same but he said he would be happy if the transfer window ended immediately. It is worth noting that Poland striker Lewandowski was signed by Guardiola when the Spaniard was at Bayern.&nbsp;

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has defended the Premier League champions' transfer spending in the wake of the British record signing of midfielder Jack Grealish, saying the club adheres to Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

European soccer governing body UEFA's FFP rules were introduced in 2009 to prevent clubs from spending beyond their means and distorting the market, requiring teams to break even and keep wages and transfer fees in line with income.

In July last year, City's two-year suspension from European&nbsp;football&nbsp;was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after it ruled that City did not breach FFP rules.

The club's spending has raised questions again after they signed Grealish for 100 million pounds&nbsp;from Aston Villa, but Guardiola said the deal was possible because of 60 million pounds worth of sales by the club over the past 12 months.

"We have limits because of FFP," Guardiola said. "We are on the same page like everyone. After that, each club decides what they want to do.

"Every season we have passed the controls that are there for everyone. If we are wrong, prove it.

"I have said before, there are owners who want the benefits for themselves. Our owners don't want to lose money but if they can spend, they will."

British media have reported City are also ready to pay in excess of 120 million pounds to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane as they look to replace Sergio Aguero, who left City&nbsp;at the end of last season after a decade-long association.

Football: Pep Guardiola defends Manchester City's big spending in transfer market

After making two transformative signings in Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, Manchester United have no excuse for not giving champions Manchester City a proper run for their money in the Premier League title race.

United finally landed England winger Sancho for 73 million pounds ($101 million) in July before making another eye-catching move by signing serial winning defender Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

Varane should bring much-needed pace and control to a defence that has relied too much on Harry Maguire in the last two seasons while Sancho can light up a powerful attack and share the team's creative responsibility with Bruno Fernandes.

United made another big investment this summer in handing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a three-year contract and the much-loved former striker must now turn the 20-times English champions back into the force they were before Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Champions City, once dismissed by Ferguson as "noisy neighbours", are undoubtedly the biggest force in Manchester now and are clear favourites to retain their crown after adding Jack Grealish to their squad for a league-record 100 million pounds.

Yet Solskjaer has been given more time and money than any of Ferguson's successors and if he cannot sustain a serious title charge, he will face renewed questions about his suitability to coach England's biggest and most successful club.

"Last season was more than acceptable in terms of on the journey but this year they’ve got to get nearer," said former United captain and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, who called Varane "the last piece in the jigsaw".

"They’ve got to get close to challenging for the title and that’s going to be really tough."

United, however, will not just face competition from City.

<h2>CHELSEA THREAT</h2>

Chelsea will pose a serious threat in their first full season under Thomas Tuchel, who transformed a team short on ideas under Frank Lampard into Champions League winners in only four months in charge.

The German proved a wily tactician and turned a team with a soft centre into an ultra-competitive side who conceded only two goals in their first 14 games in all competitions.

He has also solved the problem of striking firepower by signing Belgium's Romelu Lukaku, who scored 64 goals in all competitions in two season with Inter Milan, for 97.5 million pounds.

Liverpool should also be a force to be reckoned with again after last season's limp title defence.

They have their defensive leader Virgil van Dijk back as well as Joe Gomez and the Merseysiders will hope for better luck with injuries in this campaign.

Juergen Klopp has further boosted his team's backline with French centre back Ibrahima Konate in a bid to improve on the 42 goals they shipped last season, their worst defensive record in four years.

Leicester City, meanwhile, will make a third bid to gatecrash the top four after agonisingly missing out on a Champions League berth in the last two seasons while north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham will also be desperate to return to Europe's elite competition.

La Liga president Javier Tebas feels&nbsp;Lionel Messi's move to Manchester City or&nbsp;Paris Saint-Germain would be 'financial doping' if the 33-year-old moves at a similar compensation as Barcelona.&nbsp;

Lionel Messi is at present a free agent after his agreement at Barcelona terminated. La Liga president Javier Tebas said Lionel Messi should take a pay cut on the off chance that he needs to remain at Barcelona. He additionally said that if any unfamiliar club consented to the 33-year-old's wage demand, it would be monetary doping.

It would be incredible if it happened. We need to establish limits. Financial doping is damaging football," said the LaLiga President, according to&nbsp;ESPN.&nbsp;

Javier Tebas accepts the colossal amount of cash spent by these European clubs are not created by the club and causes expansion in the football market: "It's not real money because it's not generated by the clubs. Money not from football causes bad inflation and ruins football because clubs must put in all this effort, which takes them above their financial capacity. We have to fight against this."

Javier Tebas has said that Barcelona won't be given any adaptability in enlisting Lionel Messi. He doesn't need a person to be greater than the alliance. He said:&nbsp;

"We always want the best players, but Neymar left, Cristiano Ronaldo left and we're still here, still growing. And as far as I know neither Serie A nor Ligue 1 have grown as much as they would have liked. I would be sorry if Lionel Messi left, he's the best ever, but we should not become obsessed with players."

Barcelona has a deadline until the 14th of August to enlist the entirety of their players including Lionel Messi. Nevertheless, to agree with La Liga's FFP administering, the Catalan goliaths will need to sell a portion of their periphery players. In spite of monetary issues, Tebas trusts Barcelona will escape this soon. He added:&nbsp;

"Barcelona are facing uncertain times but they will be able to solve their problems because they have the highest turnover in the world."

Javier Tebas has said that Barcelona won't be given any adaptability in enlisting Lionel Messi. He doesn't need a person to be greater than the alliance. He said: "We always want the best players, but Neymar left, Cristiano Ronaldo left and we're still here, still growing. And as far as I know neither Serie A nor Ligue 1 have grown as much as they would have liked. I would be sorry if Lionel Messi left, he's the best ever, but we should not become obsessed with players." Barcelona has a deadline until the 14th of August to enlist the entirety of their players including Lionel Messi. Nevertheless, to agree with La Liga's FFP administering, the Catalan goliaths will need to sell a portion of their periphery players. In spite of monetary issues, Tebas trusts Barcelona will escape this soon. He added: "Barcelona are facing uncertain times but they will be able to solve their problems because they have the highest turnover in the world."

Football: 'We are not going to buy any strikers', says Man City's Pep Guardiola

Portugal defender Ruben Dias said a grueling season with club side Manchester City had motivated him for Euro 2020 and he hoped to outdo himself in the national team's title defense.

Center-back Dias, who was named England's&nbsp;Footballer of the Year by the&nbsp;Football&nbsp;Writers' Association, played 50 matches for City in all competitions in the 2020-21 campaign apart from his national team commitments.

"This just motivates me. I like to outdo myself and I like to play always on the red line," Dias told reporters.

Global players' union FIFPRO warned that player welfare was not being considered when competition calendars were drawn up.

The Euros were postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 crisis, which delayed the start of the 2020-21 season and forced European leagues to complete the demanding season in time for the summer tournament.

A number of top club coaches criticized the compressed schedule but Dias played down the impact of fatigue.

"I want to do things that nobody has done before and the chance to represent my country with all these games behind me only motivates me further," Dias said.

"This also leads me to believe I can show that I'm doing well, that I'm strong, and that I can keep on playing."

Portugal began their campaign by beating Hungary 3-0 and take on Germany in their Group F match later on Saturday.

"Our expectations are that we're going to be facing one of the best teams in the Euros," Dias said.

"We're also one of the best teams and we're fully aware that even if we started off on the right foot we need to have our feet planted firmly on the ground."
