Bayern Munich will eye a monumental comeback in the Champions League quarterfinal as they take on English Champions Manchester City in the second leg on Wednesday, April 19. Having lost the first leg 0-3, Bayern will need to be at their fluent best to overcome tournament favourites City with the winner set to play Real Madrid in the semifinal. In the evening’s other tie, Italian giants Inter Milan will look to consolidate their 2-0 lead as they take on Benfica at home and will look to reach their first Champions League semifinal in 13 years.

<h2>Can Bayern upset Man City?</h2>

The record German champions, in Thomas Tuchel’s first European game in charge, were put to the sword after they were blown away 3-0 in Manchester. While the clash comes early for Eric Chuppo-Motting, the German side has plenty of firepower in their ranks and could stage a big comeback into the contest. On the horizon, Pep Guardiola will try to get one better on his former side with his own firepower.

City have won only once at the Allianz Arena and will look to book another semifinal berth as Real Madrid await them yet again in the last four.

The home side will have a huge boost in the form of Sadio Mane as he returns to the squad having served his one-match club suspension. Mane was suspended for having an altercation with Leroy Sane during the first leg in Manchester. However, Bayern will still be without the likes of Manuel Neuer and Lucas Hernandez as they are out with long-term injuries.

On the horizon, City will have a near-perfect squad as they still are in the FA Cup along with a tense Premier League (PL) title challenge on the hands as well. Phil Foden is expected to be on the bench while the likes of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne are also expected to be on the show after they were given early relief on the weekend against Leicester City.

<h2>Inter eye dream semifinal clash</h2>

In the night’s other clash, three-time champions Inter Milan will look for a dream date in the semifinal against arch-rivals AC Milan as they carry a 2-0 advantage from the first leg. Inter’s domestic form has been dismal, but an unlikely run in the Champions League has given manager Simone Inzaghi a reprieve. A draw or even a loss by 0-1 could still see Inter make the last four and set up an all-Italian affair against AC Milan in the semifinal.

Bayern Munich possible starting lineup:

Sommer; Pavard, Upamecano, De Ligt, Davies; Kimmich, Goretzka; Sane, Musiala, Coman; Choupo-Moting

Manchester City possible starting lineup:

Ederson; Akanji, Dias, Ake; Stones, Rodri; Silva, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Grealish; Haaland

Champions League: Bayern Munich face STERN Man City challenge for SF berth; Inter eye smooth passage in last 4

Manchester City have submitted a planning application to expand the capacity of their Etihad Stadium to more than 60,000, while adding a hotel, museum and other facilities in a £300 million investment.

The plans will add around 7,000 new seats to the stadium as well as a new covered fan zone, club shop, museum and 400-bed hotel.

Last week, the Etihad was included on the list of 10 stadia which would host matches if the UK and Ireland's joint bid for organising Euro 2028 is successful, with the bid quoting a planned new capacity of 61,000.

"Over several months we have been developing concepts and designs for a best-in-class fan experience and year-round entertainment and leisure destination at the Etihad Stadium and are delighted to have now submitted a planning application to Manchester City Council," said City's managing director of operations Danny Wilson

"As with all club developments, ensuring our local community benefit is a key priority and we believe these proposals will deliver long-term economic and social opportunities, building on the regeneration work delivered in East Manchester by City Football Group since 2008."

Since an Abu-Dhabi backed takeover 15 years ago, the area around the Etihad has been transformed.

Premier League: Champions Manchester City to expand Etihad stadium to over 60,000 capacity

Arsenal's bid to win the Premier League for the first time since 2004 is in danger of imploding, but Mikel Arteta remains adamant the leaders can cope with the pressure of the title race. Arteta's side blew a two-goal lead for a second successive game as West Ham hit back to snatch a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium on Sunday.

After squandering the same advantage in last weekend's 2-2 draw at Liverpool, the Gunners once again paid the price for taking their foot off the gas. Although Arsenal are four points clear of second placed Manchester City, it is the champions who have all the momentum heading into the final weeks of a gripping title battle.

With a home game against Arsenal looming on April 26, City know they will be crowned champions if they win their last eight games.

Ominously for Arsenal, Pep Guardiola's men have already beaten them twice this season, winning 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium in the league in February, just weeks after knocking the Gunners out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory in Manchester.

For Arsenal to no longer be in control of their own destiny is a bitter pill for Arteta to swallow after the north Londoners' long spell at the top this term.

Arteta concedes Arsenal's untimely collapses against West Ham and Liverpool were self-inflicted wounds, with the Spaniard especially frustrated by the way his players took their strong position for granted on Sunday.

But he refuses to accept it was the tension of being chased so relentlessly by City that provoked the calamitous results.

- 'Ruthless mindset' -

"I'm certain it is not the pressure. It is we misunderstood what was needed in that moment," he said. "It was very different to Liverpool in terms of the pattern of play. But that is the next stage, you have to play with the same purpose when it is 2-0.

"You have to have more composure to finish the game. When you drop your level so quickly the game is there for the opponent."

Before the summit meeting with City, Arsenal host Southampton on Friday.

A victory over the bottom of the table Saints would move Arsenal seven points clear of City, who don't play in the league next weekend due to their FA Cup semi-final against Sheffield United on Saturday.

Fuelled by Erling Haaland's record-breaking goal-spree City -- winners of their last 10 games in all competitions -- have the edge in the remaining matches after the Arsenal showdown.

Their toughest tests could come on trips to Fulham and Brentford, although their progress in the Champions League might also pose a distraction.

Arsenal's trickiest fixtures could be a daunting visit to Newcastle and a home game against in-form Brighton, while a London derby against struggling Chelsea can't be taken for granted.

Arteta doesn't believe Arsenal's young squad are running out of steam towards the end of their unexpected title bid.

But he will spend the days leading up to the Southampton game searching for answers to the blip that threatens to ruin their dream season.

"Fatigue? No. The best way to put it is to convince the team they can do it. We have to dig very deep and find the solution," he said.

"We stopped playing with the purpose to score a third and fourth one. It looked too easy. We gave them hope and credit to West Ham, they took it.

Mikel Arteta confident of Arsenal not losing track in title race after successive draw in Premier League

Erling Haaland equalled the Premier League record for goals in a 38-game season on Saturday as Manchester City closed the gap on leaders Arsenal to just three points after a day of drama in the top-four race.

The Norway forward netted twice in the first half of City's 3-1 win over relegation-threatened Leicester to reach 32 goals -- the same as Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah's tally in 2017/18.

John Stones opened the scoring at the Etihad Stadium before a goal from the penalty spot and a clever dinked finish from Haaland.

Pep Guardiola substituted the 22-year-old at half-time, denying him the chance to hunt down the overall single-season record of 34 goals in the Premier League era -- set in the days of 42 games per side.

Leicester, with Dean Smith in charge for the first time, pulled a goal back in the second half through Kelechi Iheanacho but&nbsp;they slumped to a fourth straight defeat and remain second from bottom of the table.

City, chasing a fifth Premier League title in six years, are on 70 points, three behind Arsenal with eight games to go -- the Gunners play West Ham on Sunday.

The two teams meet at the Etihad on April 26 in a potential title-decider -- City's next league fixture.

"Like I said lately, it is win, win and win," said Guardiola, whose side have now won 10 consecutive games in all competitions.

"They have had an incredible run this season and I don't think they are going to drop many points, so what we have to do is be there.

"It was important for us to win today to arrive for the 'final' we have against them in the next Premier League game."

<h2>Villa form</h2>

Aston Villa put themselves in the mix for a top-four finish by beating Newcastle 3-0 for a fifth straight league win as Tottenham also lost.

Villa are still six points off the top four, but are in red-hot form after a seventh win in eight games.

Ollie Watkins, who has now scored 11 goals in 12 matches, netted twice after Jacob Ramsey had fired Unai Emery's men into an early lead.

Emery, who took over at Villa Park in October, was cautious about his side's chances of qualifying for the Champions League despite their impressive run.

"We can think about being a candidate for a Europa (League) position but the top four is very, very difficult," said the Spaniard.

"Of course if we keep winning we can add for the next weeks, but not now."

Newcastle had won their previous five games to climb to third but barely laid a glove on Villa to leave Eddie Howe's men looking over their shoulders.

With Manchester United not in action until Sunday, at Nottingham Forest, Tottenham had the chance to move into the top four but blew it as Bournemouth took a potentially decisive step towards survival with a 3-2 win.

Son Heung-min fired Spurs into an early lead, but the Cherries hit back with goals from Matias Vina and Dominic Solanke.

Substitute Arnaut Danjuma looked to have salvaged a point for Spurs when he scored against his old club two minutes from time but Dango Ouattara curled home in the 95th minute to lift Bournemouth six points clear of the relegation zone.

Brighton boosted their chances of European football with a 2-1 win at Chelsea to prolong Frank Lampard's wait for a first victory since returning to Stamford Bridge as interim manager.

Conor Gallagher opened the scoring for Chelsea but Danny Welbeck came off the bench to equalise just before half-time and Paraguayan teenager Julio Enciso won the game in spectacular style.

Crystal Palace and Wolves edged towards safety but it was a terrible day for Everton, who lost 3-1 at home to Fulham.

Bottom side Southampton look increasingly likely to be relegated after Eberechi Eze scored twice for Palace in a 2-0 win at St Mary's to clinch a third consecutive victory for the Eagles since Roy Hodgson returned as manager.

Wolves are seven points clear of the drop zone after they beat Brentford 2-0 thanks to goals from Diego Costa and Hwang Hee-chan.

Everton remain outside the relegation zone only on goal difference after they were sunk by goals from Fulham's Harrison Reed, Harry Wilson and Dan James.

Premier League: Man City's Haaland continue dream run, Villa outclass Newcastle

Bayern Munich duo Sadio Mane and Leroy Sane are in hot water after the record German Champions lost 3-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, April 11. It is reported that there was a bust-up between the duo where Mane is reported to have punched Sane, which left the German star with bleeding lips. Other players then separated Mane and Sane while Thomas Tuchel was left to rue for his team’s debacle in his first European game in charge of Bayern Munich.

<h2>What exactly happened between Mane and Sane?</h2>

Sky Germany reported on Wednesday that Sane's lip was bleeding after the altercation and the two players needed to be separated by their fellow team-mates in the dressing room. The two players were also seen in an altercation during the match when Bayern conceded three goals. The uncomfortable situation between the players saw wild scenes in the dressing room where Mane ended up landing a punch on the former Manchester City star.

Upon arrival in Munich, the team management took care of the matters by arranging a cab for Mane while Sane took the team bus from the airport.

Bayern are yet to comment on the incident and it is thought that they will carry out an investigation into the matter behind closed doors.

Erling Haaland scored his 45th goal of the season as Manchester City took a commanding 3-0 first leg lead over Bayern Munich in their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.

Rodri and Bernardo Silva were also on target for the English champions, who took a giant stride towards finally conquering Europe for the first time.

Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel got the better of Guardiola and City when Chelsea manager in the 2021 final.

But in 11 meetings between the two coaches, Guardiola has still only lost three times and got the better of his German counterpart in a heavyweight clash between two of the favourites to win the competition.

Guardiola has been regularly criticised for overly tinkering with his side when it comes to the crunch in the Champions League knockout stages.

Champions League: Bayern Munich camp in chaos as Sadio Mane reported to punch Leroy Sane in bust-up

Bayern Munich have suspended forward Sadio Mane for one game following an altercation with Leroy Sane after this week's Champions League loss to Man City, the club announced Thursday. Newspaper Bild reported former City winger Sane was hit in the face by the Senegal attacker, suffering a cut lip after Tuesday's loss.

"Sadio Mane, 31, will not be in the FC Bayern squad for the home game against 1899 Hoffenheim next Saturday," Bayern said. "The reason is misconduct by Mane after FC Bayern's Champions League game at Manchester City.

"In addition, Mane will receive a fine," they added.

The one-match suspension means Mane will be available for manager Thomas Tuchel in Wednesday's return leg against Manchester City in Munich.

Bild reported the clash started in the dying stages of Bayern's loss in Manchester, with footage showing the two arguing on the pitch.&nbsp;

Mane has endured a frustrating time since joining the German champions from Liverpool in the summer of 2022. Signed as a replacement for the departing Robert Lewandowski, the Champions League winner has scored 11 times in 32 matches for Bayern. The two-time African Player of the Year scored six goals in his first seven matches in all competitions for Bayern, but has not scored since October.&nbsp;

Mane has also had six goals ruled out for offside so far this season for Bayern, a Bundesliga record.

Mane suffered a leg injury while playing for Bayern against Werder Bremen in November which kept him out of Senegal's Qatar World Cup campaign and he missed nine club matches.

After Bayern's German Cup exit at the hands of Freiburg in early April, a smiling Mane told reporters "soon, I promise you" after he was asked when he would return to the spectacular form he displayed with Liverpool.&nbsp;

Mane was given his first start under Tuchel, who replaced the sacked Julian Nagelsmann last month, in Saturday's 1-0 league win at Freiburg, missing several chances to score.

Before the incident, Bayern chief executive Oliver Kahn acknowledged Mane's struggles, putting it down to the former Southampton striker having "a lot of competition" for starting spots.

"He doesn't know that (from Liverpool) and is perhaps not used to it."

"He's still looking for himself."

Bayern declined media requests to comment on the altercation.&nbsp;

Mane and Sane were seen on the training pitch early on Thursday, hours before the suspension was announced.

The loss was Bayern's biggest Champions League defeat since 2017 and one of the club's most devastating defeats in Champions League history.

Despite Mane being available, the six-time European champions now have little hope of turning over the deficit in next Wednesday's return leg in Munich to make it to the semi-finals.

But City were not to be denied their third and Haaland his goal as the Norwegian stretched out a telescopic leg to turn John Stones' knockdown beyond Sommer.

Alvarez fired another effort inches wide and Sommer needed finger tips to turn over Rodri's header as City went in search of a final flourish.

But Bayern will need one of the Champions League's all-time great comebacks in eight days' time if City are to be denied a third consecutive semi-final.

Haaland hits 45 as Man City demolish Bayern

Thomas Tuchel will face a stern challenge in his first Champions League (CL) match in charge as Bayern Munich take on tournament favourites Manchester City. Sacked as Chelsea coach in September 2022, Tuchel and Pep Guardiola will reignite their rivalry at the European stage, having last met in the competition in the final of the 2021 edition, with Chelsea winning the Champions League. In the other tie of the night, former champions Benfica take on Inter Milan in Lisbon.

<h2>Pep and Tuchel re-ignite rivalry</h2>

Guardiola will be eyeing a piece of revenge on his opposite number while he also faces his former side when City and Bayern meet at the Etihad Stadium. The two sides will meet for the seventh time in the history of the competition, with Guardiola part of the roster in four of those meetings for either side. Both City and Bayern have won three matches each with Bayern’s last win on the Blue side of Manchester coming in September 2013.

Domestically both City and Bayern have been facing a tough title challenge as Arsenal lead the table in Premier League, while Borussia Dortmund are only two points behind the record German champions in the Bundesliga. While much will be decided in the second league, the contest will also see Joao Cancelo make his return to the Etihad having left on loan in the January transfer window.

In the other contest of the night, two-time champions Benfica will take on Inter Milan Lisbon. Both sides will have a golden opportunity to make the final four of the competition, having gone without glory for a long time. Not since 1962 have Benfica tasted glory in the competition while Inter’s success also came in the same period. Inter last won the competition in 2010 under José Mourinho and will have the golden opportunity to bring back the glory days.

Champions League: Thomas Tuchel faces stern Man City challenge in first European contest; Benfica host Inter

Manchester City are desperate to win their first Champions League but desire alone will not be enough to claim success in Europe's top competition, manager Pep Guardiola said ahead of Tuesday's quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich. Guardiola has won four Premier League titles, one FA Cup and four League Cups at City but European success has eluded the manager who won the trophy twice as Barcelona manager.

Under the Spanish manager, City have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for six straight seasons, with the English club's best finish being runners-up in 2021.

When asked how much he wanted to win the Champions League title with City, Guardiola on Monday told reporters, "a lot".

"We want to try. It is an honour to be here against an elite club in Bayern Munich. We will not take it for granted. We have to play two games. Starting tomorrow," he added. "The question has been coming every single season. We try every single season. Teams you face are also good too and want to win too. My dream is to live it again. We want to try but that doesn't mean we are going to win.

"Michael Jordan won six NBA titles, how many years did he play? 16."

Defender Ruben Dias echoed his manager's sentiments, saying the tournament was "special" for City.

"We really want to be in it and to see it through. It will be a difficult match, but it is what the competition is all about, beating the best," Dias told reporters. "We are happy to be here. Every season the work you have to do is to stay in competitions - the Premier League, the Champions League, all the cups - the biggest goal is to stay in competitions as long as you can."

On Tuesday, Guardiola and City will come up against Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel in the Champions League for the first time since the German manager's Chelsea team beat them in the 2021 final.

"(The 2021 final) was a tight game but we forget it and we try again," Guardiola said. "Sometimes you win when you deserve to, sometimes you lose. I don't live in the past. It's part of the game."

Tuchel took charge of Bayern last month, following the sacking of Julian Nagelsmann.

"I try to figure out the quality they have in all departments. It would have been difficult with Julian Nagelsmann and also will be difficult against Tuchel," Guardiola said. "I don't pay that much attention, more attention on what I do with my team.

"Tuchel is a creative manager. Good build up, good connections between players with good runners who attack the spaces."

Champions League: 'We really want to win it,' - Manchester City's Pep Guardiola on clash against Bayern Munich

Arsenal blew a two-goal lead against Liverpool at Anfield and failed to go eight points clear of Manchester City in the Premier League title race. The Gunners appeared to be cruising to a first league victory at Anfield since 2012 when goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus put them two in front inside 30 minutes. However a scuffle between Granit Xhaka and Trent Alexander-Arnold seemed to galvanise the Reds. Mohamed Salah pulled one back for the hosts and Roberto Firmino grabbed the equaliser in the 87th Minute. It was only a few brilliant saves from Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale that kept the scores level. Champions Manchester City are six points behind Arsenal, but with a game in hand over Mikel Arteta's side. Arsenal have to travel to the Etihad Stadium and Pep Guardiola's side will be favourites to win that encounter. Many experts believe that City will make their experience count and once again come out on top.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said Erling Haaland is at the standard of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo when it comes to finding the net after scoring twice on his return from injury in a 4-1 win at Southampton on Saturday.

Victory took City to within five points of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.

Haaland has now scored 44 times in his debut season with the English champions, including 30 in 27 Premier League appearances. The Norwegian's second goal was special as the giant striker acrobatically volleyed home Jack Grealish's cross with an overhead kick.

"The second goal was amazing. It is not easy to pick the ball up in the sky and put it on the grass," said Guardiola, who coached Messi during four years as Barcelona coach. "We need him. The first half was not our best level but he changed the game.

"As a top scorer we lived two incredible decades with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi but he is on that level. He scores a lot of goals. I am very happy with 65 minutes after injury and he helped us again."

Guardiola was true to his word that he was not thinking about Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final, first leg against Bayern Munich as Haaland's return from a groin injury was the only change from the side that thrashed Liverpool 4-1 last weekend.

But the visitors failed to hit the same heights for the first 45 minutes and could have been punished against a side with more firepower than the Saints.

Southampton remain rooted to the foot of the table and four points adrift of safety.

Haaland opened the floodgates just before half-time when he stooped to meet Kevin De Bruyne's cross.

City went through the gears after the break as an eighth consecutive win in all competitions kept Guardiola's men in the hunt for a treble of trophies.

Grealish is enjoying his best form since a £100 million ($124 million) move from Aston Villa in 2021 made him the Premier League's most expensive ever player at the time. He fired in at the second attempt after his first effort was saved by Gavin Bazunu.

Grealish turned creator for the third as his cross was finished in spectacular fashion by Haaland.

"You will never see me do that," said De Bruyne of Haaland's second goal. "You would get me to Southampton hospital if I do that!"

That was the striker's final touch as he then made way for Julian Alvarez for the final 20 minutes with one eye on Bayern's visit in midweek.

Sekou Mara briefly gave the home support something to cheer when he steered home Moussa Djenepo's cross.

But City restored their three-goal cushion just three minutes later when De Bruyne was bundled over inside the box.

The Belgian stood aside to allow Alvarez to fire home his 14th goal of the season despite largely playing second fiddle to Haaland.

Liverpool have tended to be City's title rivals in the Guardiola era.

But they will be hoping for a favour from their old foes on Sunday when Arsenal go to Anfield hoping for their first away league win against Liverpool in 11 years.

Manchester City coped without the injured Erling Haaland to keep the Premier League title race alive by coming from behind to thrash Liverpool 4-1 on Saturday. Goals from Julian Alvarez, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish moved the defending champions back to within five points of Arsenal at the top of the table.

City and Liverpool have finished as the top two in four of the past five Premier League seasons, but the Reds are struggling just to qualify for the Champions League after a dreadful campaign and were given another lesson in the gap they have to bridge be back challenging next season. A chastening defeat leaves Jurgen Klopp's men still seven points adrift of the top four down in sixth.

A groin injury meant Haaland was watching on from the stands alongside his father and former City midfielder Alfie Haaland. Despite the absence of their 42-goal striker, Pep Guardiola's men made a positive start as Alisson Becker was forced into saves from Gundogan and Rodri before Riyad Mahrez fired a free-kick inches wide. But City were caught out on the counter-attack as Liverpool went in front on 17 minutes.

The home fans were screaming for offside as Diogo Jota broke in behind the City defence before teeing up Mohamed Salah to slot home his 23rd goal of the season. A VAR review showed Manuel Akanji had played the Portuguese forward onside.

Guardiola was on his knees when Mahrez blasted over another great chance inches over. But he did not have to wait long for his side to show their quality even shorn of Haaland. De Bruyne, Mahrez and Grealish combined to open up the Liverpool defence and Alvarez was left with the simple task of slotting in his 13th goal of the season despite spending most of the campaign as Haaland's deputy.

It took just 53 seconds of the second half for City to edge in front thanks to another scintillating team move. Alvarez was the creator this time as his cross-field pass freed Mahrez to race into acres of space behind the Liverpool defence. The Algerian's cross was perfectly weighted to cut out Alisson for De Bruyne to tap into an unguarded net.

If City's first two goals were the fruit of collective brilliance, Liverpool's defending for the third summed up a miserable season for Klopp's men. Alvarez was afforded an incredible amount of time inside the box by Fabinho to pick out a shot and, when his effort was blocked by Trent Alexander-Arnold, Gundogan also had the space to take a touch before firing into the top corner.

Liverpool have now conceded three or more goals in nine games this season and the punishment did not end there for the visitors. Grealish was the standout individual on the day and rounded off arguably his best performance as a City player with the fourth goal.

City's movement off the ball was again too good for a cumbersome Liverpool defence as Grealish and De Bruyne exchanged a one-two before the Premier League's most expensive player of all time side-footed into the far corner.

Arsenal, who face Leeds later on Saturday, maintain the upper hand in the title race. But City could be coming to the boil at just the right time after scoring 17 goals in their last three games and with Arsenal still to visit the Etihad later this month.

Champions League: Chelsea to meet Real Madrid yet again in QF; Man City draw German powerhouse Bayern Munich

Erling Haaland equalled a Champions League record with a five-goal haul to ease Manchester City into the quarter-finals at RB Leipzig's expense as a 7-0 win for the English champions secured an 8-1 aggregate victory on Tuesday.

Haaland also set a new club record for goals in a season of 39 in the process as Pep Guardiola's men reached the last eight for the sixth consecutive season.

"My super strength is scoring goals," said Haaland. "A lot of it is being quick in the mind and trying to put it where the goalkeeper is not,” he added.

City are yet to go all the way in the Champions League, but they have never had a striker of Haaland's quality to make the difference in the latter stages before.

At just 22 he now has 33 goals in 25 appearances in Europe's premier club competition.

"Firstly, I'm proud to play in this competition, I love it," added Haaland. "Five goals! To win 7-0 is amazing,” he said.

The weather was more akin to Haaland's homeland on a snowy night in Manchester, but City did not freeze under the pressure and kept their Champions League dreams alive.

The tie was delicately balanced after a 1-1 draw in eastern Germany three weeks ago, but a Leipzig side depleted by injury never looked like a match for their star-studded opponents.

Guardiola had kept Kevin De Bruyne in reserve for Abu Dhabi-backed City's 1-0 win at Crystal Palace in the Premier League at the weekend and on his return to the starting line-up, the Belgian was back to his best.

Ilkay Gundogan should have opened the scoring after just three minutes from De Bruyne's inviting cross.

Haaland's searing pace then created a chance out of nothing from Nathan Ake's long ball, but Janis Blaswich raced out from his goal to block.

Leipzig did have cause for complaint over two controversial calls that had a massive impact on the game before half-time.

Firstly, VAR spotted a handball against Benjamin Henrichs that led to a penalty that neither the City players nor the crowd even noticed.

Denied record chance&nbsp;

Haaland fired low to Blaswich's left to maintain his perfect record from the spot for City with his sixth penalty of the season.

Two minutes later it was 2-0 as Haaland teed up De Bruyne, who smashed a shot against the bar, and then showed his speed and strength to power home a header from the rebound.

Leipzig could have been gifted a route back into the tie when Ederson sprinted from his goal to wipe out Konrad Laimer.

But rather than send the Brazilian goalkeeper off, Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic did not even award a free-kick.

Any doubt over the outcome was ended with the final action of the first half.

Ruben Dias rose highest to head Jack Grealish's corner onto the post and Amadou Haidara's attempted clearance ricocheted off Haaland into the net.

Gundogan's classy finish into the far corner four minutes into the second half rubbed more salt into Leipzig's wounds before Haaland started rewriting the record books.

Firstly, he hammered home at the second attempt after Blaswich parried his initial header to match Tommy Johnson's record of 38 goals for City in the 1928-29 season.

Haaland set a new mark with still three months of the campaign to go when he snaffled up another rebound after Blaswich saved from Manuel Akanji.

In the process, he moved level with Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano's record of scoring five goals in a Champions League game.

But Guardiola denied his star striker the chance of another record as he replaced him with Julian Alvarez with 25 minutes remaining.

"I told him I would love to score a double hat-trick, but what can I do," said Haaland.

Instead, it was left to De Bruyne to have the final say as he curled a superb strike into the top corner in stoppage time.&nbsp;

Haaland hits five to ease Man City into Champions League quarters

Manchester City will have a stern test in their hand as they take on German giants RB Leipzig at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, March 14 evening. The affair evenly poised at 1-1 will see both teams have a shot at a place in the last eight, but it is Pep Guardiola’s men who will stand with an advantage with the home crowd backing the team. In the evening’s other match, two-time champions Porto will host Inter Milan in Portugal.

<h3>Manchester City face stern test</h3>

City have at least reached the last four of the competition in previous seasons and will look to build on that success. The Champions League remains the only trophy missing from the City cabinet at the moment as they have tasted success on all fronts. While the domestic season is still in the balance for City, they will look to bring their mojo into the European competition.

The Premier League (PL) champions are currently second in the domestic league and have the firepower of Riyad Mahrez, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden. Traditionally, there is not much that separates the two sides with both teams winning one match each in three previous meetings.

RB Leipzig have lost their previous three visits to England and will look to bring their domestic form to the table. Marco Rose’s men are third in the Bundesliga standings are sit only behind Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. The German side will try to reach the last eight stage yet again with aspirations of winning the title. Their best performance in the competition came in 2020 when they exited the semifinal stage.

<h3>Inter travel to Porto</h3>

In the other key battle of the evening, three-time champions Inter Milan will travel to Portugal with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg. Their quest against Porto will not be an easy affair as the two-time champions will have the backing of the home fans. It is not since 2011, that Inter have reached the last of the Champions League and will look to return to the summit along with city rivals AC Milan, who already are in the last eight.

Champions League: Manchester City face Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig at Etihad; Porto host Inter Milan

Pep Guardiola has won nine major trophies at Manchester City but the Spaniard said his managerial era at the Premier League club will be defined by whether he delivers their first Champions League title.

Guardiola has won four Premier League titles, one FA Cup and four League Cups at City but European success has eluded the manager who won the trophy twice as Barcelona manager, with the English club's best finish being runners-up in 2021.

When asked if winning the trophy with City would define his success in the eyes of the public, Guardiola told reporters,

"Yes. That doesn't mean I agree with that but, absolutely, we'll be judged for that competition. My first Champions League game here (in 2016), they asked, 'Are you here to win the Champions League?' If I was manager for Real Madrid I could understand, but I accept it. As much as we go through, it's not going to change that."

City host RB Leipzig in the second leg of their last-16 tie on Tuesday after the first game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Guardiola also said there was room for improvement in striker Erling Haaland's all-round game even though the Norwegian has scored 34 goals this season.

"I don't like one player just to score goals in the box. It's important, we need it of him," he said. "But away from the opponents' box where he cannot score a goal, we need him to be more active. We have to take a look at him and he has to be involved in what we're doing. He has improved, he can be better."

Haaland has netted six times against Leipzig in his career. Although his scoring rate has come down after a blistering start this season, midfielder Kevin De Bruyne said the team was happy with his output.

"I feel like in the beginning of the season when everything was going in and we were winning a lot of games there was nothing going wrong, but when you lose a few points it's different," De Bruyne said.

"I don't feel there is any issue. I have not heard anything coming out from the team, from Erling or anyone else.

"People outside will judge on how we play. Maybe some games we play a better brand of football then in others or in other years. But in other games, Crystal Palace at home (where Haaland got a hat-trick in a 4-2 win), for example, he won us the game."

Haaland also scored the winner with a penalty at Palace on Satuday.

When asked if winning the trophy with City would define his success in the eyes of the public, Guardiola told reporters, "Yes. That doesn't mean I agree with that but, absolutely, we'll be judged for that competition. My first Champions League game here (in 2016), they asked, 'Are you here to win the Champions League?' If I was manager for Real Madrid I could understand, but I accept it. As much as we go through, it's not going to change that." Guardiola also said there was room for improvement in striker Erling Haaland's all-round game even though the Norwegian has scored 34 goals this season. "I don't like one player just to score goals in the box. It's important, we need it of him," he said. "But away from the opponents' box where he cannot score a goal, we need him to be more active. We have to take a look at him and he has to be involved in what we're doing. He has improved, he can be better." Haaland has netted six times against Leipzig in his career. But in other games, Crystal Palace at home (where Haaland got a hat-trick in a 4-2 win), for example, he won us the game." Haaland also scored the winner with a penalty at Palace on Satuday.

Winning a Champions League title will eventually define my era at Manchester City, says Pep Guardiola

The Premier League (PL) title race could take a decisive twist this weekend as Arsenal and Manchester City face tough away trips. While Arsenal will face Fulham at Craven Cottage, their title rivals City will also be in London as they take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. The weekend though will provide a big opportunity for Liverpool to claim a top four spot as they travel to Bournemouth.

<h3>Arsenal face Fulham</h3>

Mikel Arteta’s side will have fresh memories of their stunning PL win against Bournemouth last weekend as Reiss Nelson scored in the 97th minute to take all three points. However, they face Fulham who are enjoying a great revival in the PL after returning to the top division. West London outfit beat Chelsea in January and will look to add a spanner in the work for the Gunners. Marco Silva’s side also occupies a European spot and have already weaved away relegation fears.

<h3>Man City travel to Crystal Palace</h3>

Manchester City will have big days to come in their season and this week could prove decisive with bearings on PL and the Champions League. Pep Guardiola’s side will travel to Palace before they face RB Leipzig in the Champions League in midweek. Currently, only five points separate the Gunners and Man City and a win for Arsenal and a defeat for City could hand a real initiative for the North London side.

Premier League: Arsenal, Man City face tough away trips in PL title race; Liverpool eye Top 4 berth

Arsenal staged a thrilling comeback to beat Bournemouth 3-2 and preserve their five-point cushion in the title race, after champions Manchester City turned up the heat earlier on Saturday by beating Newcastle United.

City's 2-0 win earlier in the day sliced Arsenal's advantage to two points, and when the leaders trailed 2-0 against relegation-threatened Bournemouth with an hour gone in north London it appeared their hold on top spot was weakening.

However, goals from Thomas Partey and substitutes Ben White and Reiss Nelson -- Nelson's arriving in the seventh minute of stoppage time -- sparked wild scenes of celebration.

On the flip side, Chelsea eased some of the pressure on manager Graham Potter as a second-half header from France defender Wesley Fofana earned them a nervy 1-0 home win against Leeds United -- their first victory since Jan. 15.

Whereas, fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur's top-four ambitions suffered a dent as they went down 1-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are gradually pulling clear of the relegation zone.

Arsenal stays on top after stunning win

Arsenal had not won a Premier League game in which they had trailed by at least two goals since 2012, so the omens looked bad for the Gunners as they were rocked by Bournemouth. The visitors needed only 9.1 seconds to take the lead when Philip Billing scored with a close-range finish after an audacious move straight from the kick-off.

It was the second-quickest goal in Premier League history behind Shane Long's 7.69 seconds effort for Southampton against Watford in 2019.

Marcos Senesi rose unmarked to head in a second for his side just before the hour mark, but that provoked a furious Arsenal response with Thomas Partey prodding a shot past Bournemouth keeper Neto within minutes. Eight minutes after that, White's volley crossed the line despite Neto's desperate dive. But Bournemouth appeared to be holding on for a point as the game went deep into stoppage time.

Pandemonium then broke out as the ball fell to Nelson from a corner and he sent a left-foot thunderbolt into the corner of the net to seal an unlikely victory which moved Arsenal to 63 points from 26 games, ahead of City on 58.

"Everybody is overwhelmed a bit. It was madness from the first minute of the game where we defended so poorly and then you have to climb a mountain," a still-buzzing Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta told reporters.

'TRICKY GAME'

There was no such drama at Manchester City with back-in-form Phil Foden scoring an early beauty before substitute Bernardo Silva wrapped up the points in the second half.

Foden, who had been sidelined earlier this season with a nagging foot injury, put City ahead in the 15th minute, weaving through four Newcastle defenders before angling a shot that glanced off defender Sven Botman and past keeper Nick Pope.

Newcastle, who have recorded just one win in their last eight league games, had some chances but Silva came off the bench in the 65th minute to score with a sharp finish from an Erling Haaland flick. The goal was City's 1,000th in the Premier League at home.

"We won the game, we didn't suffer much at the end -- an incredible result for us because it was a tricky game," City manager Pep Guardiola said.

PL: Arsenal stay on top after securing clinical win over Bournemouth, City close in gap for title race

Phil Foden's brace eased Manchester City to a 3-0 victory over second-tier Bristol City as they moved into the FA Cup sixth round but Leicester City's hopes of repeating their 2021 triumph were dashed on Tuesday. Foden struck in the seventh minute but it was not an entirely comfortable night for Pep Guardiola's side until the England forward's deflected effort made it 2-0 late on.

Kevin De Bruyne then gave the scoreline an emphatic look with a sublime finish from 25 metres although it was harsh on Bristol City who had been on a 12-match unbeaten run and pushed the Premier League champions hard. Leicester were booed off after a 2-1 home defeat by second-tier Blackburn Rovers for whom Tyrhys Dolan and Sammie Szmodics were on target before a Kelechi Iheanacho reply.

Fulham reached the sixth round for the first time in 13 years with superb goals by Joao Palhinha and Manor Solomon earning them a 2-0 win over fellow top-flight side Leeds United. Brighton and Hove Albion's hopes of a first ever major trophy remained intact as Evan Ferguson's first-half goal sealed a 1-0 win over second-tier Stoke City. Guardiola named a strong side, as he invariably does in domestic cup competitions, and City began the game in dynamic style with Kalvin Phillips hitting the crossbar. City did not have to wait long to take the lead though with Foden firing high into the roof of the net from Riyad Mahrez's pass across the face of goal.

The hosts did not buckle though and had a good shout for a penalty declined when Mark Sykes went down under a challenge from Rico Lewis in the area while Alex Scott forced a decent save from City keeper Stefan Ortega. Bristol City, who were spared having to deal with rested Erling Haaland, were still very much in the game until De Bruyne split their defence with a ball to Nathan Ake whose pass eventually fell to Foden whose shot deflected into the net off of Zak Vyner.

"It was really tough. Bristol showed us how good they can be. I was impressed by some players, I didn't know them. The second half was much better," Guardiola said. Promotion-chasing Blackburn thoroughly deserved their win at Leicester whose form remains wildly unpredictable. "It's just consistency and mentality and ambition to succeed. That's been too up and down for us," Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers said. "I'm really disappointed for the supporters. It's been a real challenge for them this season. The FA Cup was an opportunity to get to a quarter-final, against a Championship team at home, but they were a lot better than us, and we have to be worried about that."

Fulham's magnificent season continues under Marco Silva with the Cottagers still chasing a European qualification spot on two fronts. They were not at their best against Leeds who had a host of chances and a goal disallowed but still showed their quality. Palhinha struck a superb curled effort after winning the ball after 21 minutes and Israeli Solomon's 56th-minute goal was almost as impressive.

"It is great for us to go to the quarter-final," Silva, whose side are sixth in the Premier League, said. "We know our story with the FA Cup is not great and we are here to try and change it." The remaining four fifth-round ties are on Wednesday with League Cup winners Manchester United at home to West Ham United.

Can't drop points, says Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola

Premier League holders Manchester City will next face German club RB Leipzig in their first leg of the round-of-16 clash in Champions League on Wednesday. However, City will miss the services of two of their star performers in mid-fielder Kevin De Bruyne and defender Aymeric Laporte – both of whom are out due to illness, manager Pep Guardiola confirmed to reporters on Tuesday. Much like every year at the club since joining, De Bruyne is in wonderful form lately, contributing with 18 assists in 31 matches across all competitions. Laporte, who is also out with an unspecified illness, further remains in doubt for City’s away PL clash on Saturday against A.F.C. Bournemouth.

"Unfortunately, sometimes it happens. He (De Bruyne) didn't feel good right after the game with Forest... yesterday Aymeric (Laporte) didn't feel good. Another player is going to play. It happens sometimes," Guardiola told reporters on Tuesday as quoted by the Reuters.

Having faced the current fifth-place team in the Bundesliga before, Pep knows what challenge they will throw at them in this high-octane clash. Drawn in the same group in the past season as well, Manchester City first lost to RB Leipzig 1-2 in an away clash before thrashing them at the Etihad Stadium by a margin of 6-3.

"We know the quality of them for many years. A culture for young players, recruitment, physicality, clear patterns of play, go to the channels, a lot of play in the middle ... in the transition they are unstoppable. Huge respect, I know the quality and it will be tough,” Guardiola said.

Meanwhile, chasing yet another Premier League title, City, who is second on the table with two points behind toppers Arsenal, played a 1-1 draw in their last outing against Nottingham Forest. Even after dropping points at such a crucial juncture, Pep backed his team and said although they played well against Forest, he doesn’t have a reason as to why they couldn’t cross the line.

For their upcoming knockout match in the Champions League, Pep said the team has trained well, and that he has a feeling that they will do better this time.

"Last game against Nottingham was highest standards, I loved the way we play and we don't win because it's football. I do not have an answer on what happened in that situation," Pep said. "Today we trained and it's there but that doesn't mean we'll win. But I have a good feeling."

ALSO READ: James Anderson ends Pat Cummins' four-year run as No 1 Test bowler, attains top spot in latest ICC rankings Having faced the current fifth-place team in the Bundesliga before, Pep knows what challenge they will throw at them in this high-octane clash.

Champions League: Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne to miss RB Leipzig clash due to illness, confirms Pep

Pep Guardiola has called on Jack Grealish and Kevin De Bruyne to raise their performances to new heights as Manchester City fight to retain the Premier League title. Grealish and De Bruyne both scored in Wednesday's vital 3-1 win at Arsenal as City moved above the Gunners into first place on goal difference. But, with no margin for error in their bid to hold off Arsenal, Guardiola believes England forward Grealish and Belgium midfielder De Bruyne have even more to give. Grealish has excelled for City since the World Cup break, producing his best run of form after a difficult time since joining from Aston Villa in 2021.

"Obviously he's playing really good. I'm not talking about the decision-making, but more about his ambition and aggression to point to the opponent, to attack the back line," Guardiola told reporters on Friday.

"The quality was always there but his commitment to take risks and make important decisions, makes the difference. But he has to continue."

De Bruyne has found it harder to deliver his usual masterful display this term, with his goal at Arsenal only the fourth time he has scored in the current campaign.

Guardiola is encouraged by De Bruyne's recent efforts however, saying: "Kevin is playing really good, too. It's like Jack, I'm so pleased for everyone, but I want more.

Although City have overhauled Arsenal to take pole position in the title race, Guardiola believes Mikel Arteta's men are still favourites.

City have the momentum after trailing Arsenal by eight points last month, but Guardiola pointed to the Gunners' game in hand as a key factor.

"Arsenal still have a game in hand, so nothing has changed much," Guardiola said ahead of Saturday's trip to Nottingham Forest.

"When you are a lot of points in front or a lot of points behind, yes there is a big difference, but we are tight.

"Momentum is when you win 10 games in a row and it didn't happen this season. We lost three games ago in London against Tottenham."

Beating Arsenal was a statement of intent from City as they chase a fifth English title in six seasons.

But Guardiola was just relieved to see City show they are still hungry for silverware after so much success in recent years.

"We wanted to arrive with 15 games left to be close, and we want to arrive at the last eight or 10 games being there close to the top," he said.

"We are in the position I would have dreamed of at the beginning of the season. I could not expect to be a lot of points in front after winning back to back. That's almost impossible."

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola wants 'star players' to raise their performance

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was not a pleased man after silly errors from the players cost his side three crucial points in the title race. Arteta said it was a 'shame' that his team could not come out on top despite having City pinned down for the majority of the game. “It’s exceptionally difficult to play at the level they require you to play to have a chance to win. I thought in many moments we did and we had them," said Arteta before adding, "But if you give three goals the way we did and don’t put away the big chances we had, then the margin for error is almost zero. "It’s a shame because we really had them," rued the Spaniard manager. Manchester City were slow off the blocks in the first half as Arsenal pressed well and took advantage of midfield number superiority. It was unlike of a Pep Guardiola-coached team to be this passive as they only had 36 per cent possession throughout the match. Despite starting placidly, it was City that drew the first blood, courtesy of a costly error from Japanese international Takehiro Tomiyasu. He made a fluke back pass to keeper Aaron Ramsdale that dropped right under the feet of City's attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne who buried the ball to the back of the net with extreme precision. WATCH | 'Beer anyone?' Kevin De Bruyne mocks Arsenal fans with THIS hilarious message Arteta reflected on Tomiyasu's brain fade moment and said, “I don’t know if it’s experience or bad luck. I’ve never seen Tomiyasu make that pass back in seven years and he did it today. It’s part of it and they have the quality to punish you. Despite the loss, Arsenal are still very much in the hunt for the first Premier League trophy in over 18 years. They have an extra game in hand and the side has the necessary quality to go on another winning run. “We have to pick [up] the points, because the performances are there for sure. Games are decided in the boxes and we have given too much away today and weren’t ruthless enough to convert our chances. That’s what we have to improve,"added Arteta. 'It's a shame...': Mikel Arteta blasts Arsenal for shipping three goals against Manchester City

Manchester City talisman Kevin De Bruyne has poked fun at Arsenal faithful after the defending champions inflicted a 3-1 drubbing upon the Gooners. The star midfielder was at his imperious best at the Emirates Stadium which certainly did not go down well with Arsenal supporters in the stadium.

After De Bruyne was subbed in the 87th minute of the game, Arsenal fans hurled bottles and other projectiles at him. However, the attacking midfielder, with a smirk on his face, quietly dodged them and sauntered across the length of the pitch. Later, to further rub in on the misery of Arsenal fans, the Belgian took to his Instagram account and posted two stories with the caption 'Beer anyone?' and 'Thanks!'. The second picture had a cup flying over his head. De Bruyne was a thorn in Arsenal's track as he scored and assisted once while dictating the play throughout from the middle of the pitch. However, De Bruyne, loitering in the half-space, quickly pounced upon the stray ball and dinked it over Ramsdale to open the scoring. Arsenal upped the ante afterward and managed to achieve parity in the 42nd minute via a Bukayo Saka penalty. However, that was to be the end of Arsenal's impact on the game. After the halftime whistle, manager Pep Guardiola made a few tactical tweaks as City looked like their old selves. Jack Grealish scored in the 72nd minute while Erling Haaland put the game to bed effectively in the 82nd minute with a stunning finish. The win has propelled City to the top of the table while Arsenal have dropped to second, having an extra game in hand. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has made a big claim with regards to the Old Trafford club. The former full-back feels the Red Devils are not ready for the title race just yet. Talking about the Erik Ten Hag-led side, it went past Leeds 2-0 in their recent outing in the ongoing Premier League courtesy of strikes from in-form Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho. Speaking on the sidelines, Neville revealed why he feels the premier club is far away from winning the elite title.&nbsp;

Neville also felt that Man United won't be able to get the better of Leeds -- which they eventually did -- and said that manager Erik Ten Hag is prioritizing their upcoming UEFA Europa League clash against Barcelona. "Interestingly, I was watching the second half against Leeds, and I thought they weren't going to get the goal and get the win. I thought Erik ten Hag has had to prioritize the Barcelona game because he put Raphael Varane on the bench to save him for that game on Thursday and played Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw at centre-back,” Neville pointed out.

"I just think it will be too much for them but if they are in it come March and April, they'll have a massive chance with seven or eight games to go. So, they have just got to hang in there and hope that Arsenal and Man City aren't quite right towards the end of the season, but I just think they aren't quite ready yet,” Neville pointed out.

Man United will certainly have a point to prove going forward. They are currently at the third spot in the EPL standings but haven't won the trust of many former players and experts with regard to winning the title this year. Currently, they have shifted their focus to Europa League where they face Barcelona on February 16 before they host Leicester City on February 19 in the Premier League.

Man United not at the level of Man City & Arsenal, feels Old Trafford club's former fullback Gary Neville

Manchester City produced a defiant response to the Premier League's charge sheet as they comfortably beat Aston Villa 3-1 to close to within three points of leaders Arsenal on Sunday. Goals by Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez put the result beyond doubt by halftime as City got back on track following last weekend's loss at Tottenham Hotspur. With the club facing more than 100 charges relating to alleged financial misconduct, the home fans were in belligerent mood at the Etihad Stadium with a series of ironic chants and voicing support for the club's owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan.

On the pitch, City's players showed they have not been distracted by the developments as they effectively wrapped up the points even before the halftime whistle. Pep Guardiola's side needed only four minutes to take the lead when Rodri headed in Riyad Mahrez's corner and they were cruising in the 39th minute when Erling Haaland was forced wide after racing on to a Kevin de Bruyne pass but showed great vision to set up Gundogan for a side-foot finish.

Villa were left with mission impossible when Mahrez tucked away a penalty in first-half stoppage time after Jacob Ramsey was adjudged to have tripped former Villa player Jack Grealish.

Ollie Watkins scored for the third successive league match to reduce the deficit on the hour mark and Villa also struck the woodwork through substitute Jhon Duran late on but City never looked in any real danger of dropping points.

However, it was not a vintage City performance against Villa but considering the build-up was dominated by serious allegations that could have huge ramifications for the Abu Dhabi-owned club, it was efficient enough to get the job done. It also set up Wednesday's clash at Arsenal beautifully, although they may have a worry with Haaland being withdrawn at halftime on Sunday with an injury.

"It's going to be a tough game," Gundogan told Sky Sports. "We are looking forward to it and know how tough it will be."

Meanwhile, PL champions City have 48 points from 22 games to Arsenal's 51 from 21 and can go top if they win at Arsenal on Wednesday.

'We will be innocent...': Man City boss Pep Guardiola responds for the first time amid cheating allegations

The Premier League has charged Manchester City with breaching its rules on more than 100 occasions over multiple years. WION tells you more.

Man City charged by Premier League for numerous alleged breaches of financial rules

Manchester City's bid to chop Arsenal's Premier League lead to two points was scuppered as Harry Kane's record-breaking goal earned Tottenham Hotspur a 1-0 win over the champions on Sunday. Kane's 15th-minute effort punished some sloppy City passing and made him the north London club's all-time top goal-scorer with 267, taking him past former great Jimmy Greaves whose record had stood since 1970. It was a strike even the fans of Tottenham's arch-rivals Arsenal would have celebrated down the Seven Sisters Road as it helped Mikel Arteta's side stay five points clear of champions City despite Saturday's shock loss at Everton.

Tottenham had led by two goals at halftime at City a few weeks ago only to capitulate and lose 4-2 but this time they held firm despite a late red card for Cristian Romero to boost their own hopes of finishing in the top four.

With Erling Haaland subdued, the closest City came to scoring was a Riyad Mahrez effort that smashed against the underside of the crossbar in first-half stoppage time. Tottenham then withstood a late City siege with some tenacious defending to clinch a third win in four league games over Pep Guardiola's side.

City remain in second place with 45 points from 21 games with Arsenal on 50 having played a game less with the two sides meeting in north London on Feb. 15. Tottenham, whose manager Antonio Conte was absent after having surgery to remove his gallbladder, are fifth on 39 points from 22 games, one behind Newcastle United.

Kane's moment arrived when City made a mess of trying to play out from the back and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg stole the ball off Rico Lewis on the edge of the area before holding off a challenge and flicking the ball to Kane. The England striker's right-foot shot was not his sweetest connection but it found its way into the corner past Ederson as Kane became only the third player to score 200 Premier League goals.

After the final whistle Kane was interviewed on the pitch as fans serenaded him with "Harry you're one of own.." -- a reference to the fact he joined the club as an 11-year-old.

"It's quite surreal, a magical feeling to do it in front of the home fans and to win the game, I wanted to do it at this special place and in front of these amazing fans."

City sent on Kevin De Bruyne for Mahrez on the hour and the Belgian fired a shot wide while Julian Alvarez had a ferocious effort deflected over the crossbar.

Romero was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Jack Grealish but City could find no way through as they missed a huge opportunity to put pressure on Arsenal and they find themselves only three points above in-form Manchester United.

"Sooner or later it is going to change, but it is strange we haven't scored one goal," Guardiola said of City's troubles with Tottenham. "To find an explanation is not easy.

"We are not in the position to think about being champions, just the next game, Aston Villa, we will prepare well and play our game as best as possible."

ALSO READ: NBA: Tickets price skyrockets as Lakers forward LeBron James chases history With Erling Haaland subdued, the closest City came to scoring was a Riyad Mahrez effort that smashed against the underside of the crossbar in first-half stoppage time. "It's quite surreal, a magical feeling to do it in front of the home fans and to win the game, I wanted to do it at this special place and in front of these amazing fans." City sent on Kevin De Bruyne for Mahrez on the hour and the Belgian fired a shot wide while Julian Alvarez had a ferocious effort deflected over the crossbar.

Winter deadline day transfer deals have changed the dynamics of a league on many occasions, and this time, it’s no different. Every club regardless of it being a mid-table or a topper are in race to sign their dream players as the transfer window closes tonight. In the latest developments, Manchester City’s wingback Joao Cancelo has joined German giants Bayern Munich on a loan deal with an option to buy in the following summer. Whereas, Premier League table toppers Arsenal have also landed Italy and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho in a £12 million deal.

Joao heads to Germany

Unlike many other top clubs across Europe, Bayern did some good business in this transfer window by landing some promising talents, and in Joao, an experienced player. Cancelo’s loan move with an option to buy surprised a lot of City or even football fans in general.

For the defending champions, Cancelo made 16 league starts this season but was&nbsp;nowhere to be seen following a defeat against rivals Manchester United, missing next three games. With the emergence of young Nathan Ake and 18-year-old Rico Lewis in the fullback area, Joao started in just three out of ten games since the end of FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

As reported by the Reuters, Cancelo, in the latest news conference said, "My decision had to do with the playing time that had been little in recent weeks. There was speculation that my relationship with (Manchester City coach) Pep (Guardiola) was not the best but fact is I wanted to play more.

"I wanted to start this new adventure as soon as possible," Cancelo added. "I enjoyed my time at City and I am still under contract with the club so I don't see it as a final departure. I will now focus only on my five months and see what happens then."

Gunners gunning ahead with Jorginho deal

Meanwhile, on the other hand, Premier League leaders Arsenal are closing in on completing a deal with Chelsea for midfielder Jorginho worth £12m, as reported by famous Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano. As per him, the personal terms have been agreed and the contract until 2024 with option of another year is also signed.
