<p>However, IRNA said Amini's hometown of Saqez was "completely quiet" and that calls for strike in Kurdish areas had failed due to "people's vigilance and the presence of security and military forces".</p>

<p>It quoted an official in the Kurdistan province as saying: "A number of agents affiliated with counter-revolutionary groups who had planned to create chaos and prepare media fodder were arrested in the early hours of this morning."</p>

<h2><strong>US, UK issue sanctions</strong></h2>

<p>The United States and Britain imposed sanctions on Iran on Friday (September 15) ahead of Amini's death anniversary.</p>

<p>"Mahsa’s tragic and senseless death in the custody of Iran’s so-called 'Morality Police' sparked demonstrations across Iran that were met with unspeakable violence, mass arrests, systemic internet disruptions and censorship by the Iranian regime," U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.</p>

<p>"We will continue to take appropriate action, alongside our international partners, to hold accountable those who suppress Iranians’ exercise of human rights," he said, adding that Canada, Australia, and other partners were also imposing sanctions this week.</p>

<p>In a separate statement, the US Treasury Department said that it imposed sanctions on more than two dozen people and entities, that it said were linked to Iran's "violent suppression" of protests in the wake of Amini's death and its crackdown on dissenting voices and restrictions on the internet.</p>

<p>The department said that the action targets 29 people and groups, including 18 key members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran's Law Enforcement Forces (LEF), as well as the head of Iran's prison organisations. They also target officials linked to Iran's internet blockade and several media outlets.</p>

<p>The sanctions target LEF spokesperson Saeed Montazerolmehdi, multiple LEF and IRGC commanders, and Iran’s Prisons Organization chief Gholamali Mohammadi.</p>

<p>Douran Software Technologies CEO Alireza Abedinejad as well as state-controlled media organizations Press TV, Tasnim News Agency and Fars News were also among the ones sanctioned.</p>

<p>"The United States ... will continue to take collective action against those who suppress Iranians’ exercise of their human rights," the Treasury's Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson, said in the statement.</p>

<p>On the other hand, the UK separately announced its sanctions that targeted senior Iranian decision-makers implementing Tehran's compulsory hijab law, including Iran's minister for culture and Islamic guidance, his deputy, the mayor of Tehran and an Iranian police spokesman.</p>

<p>Amini died last year on September 16, at the age of 22, after she was arrested in Tehran for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic's strict dress code for women.</p>

<p>Amini, who had been visiting Tehran with her family, is buried in her hometown of Saqez in Iran's Kurdistan province, with activists alleging the authorities are determined to prevent any public rallying around it.</p>

<p>France-based Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) said that the grave was attacked on the morning of May 21.</p>

<p>Images on social media, reportedly from the Instagram account of Mahsa's brother Ashkan, depicted that the glass protecting a portrait of Amini at the head of the tomb had shattered.</p>

<p>"Sadly, on Sunday morning, people who are already known to us, and who have done the same things in the past, attacked the grave of Zhina Mahsa Amini," the family's lawyer Saleh Nikbakht said in a statement published by KHRN.</p>

<p>It was not specified who these individuals were. But the lawyer said that the authorities had previously intervened in order to prevent the construction of a protective canopy over the grave.</p>

<h2><strong>Defiant words from Mahsa's brother</strong></h2>

<p>"So the glass of your tombstone also bothers them? Let them break it a thousand times, we will make it again, let's see who gets tired," Ashkan Amini said in his social media post.</p>

<p>Family and supporters of Mahsa Amini said she was killed by a blow to the head when she was in police custody. Authorities claim that she died due to a heart attack that was brought on by previous ill health.</p>

<p>Activists accuse the authorities of suppressing the protests with a crackdown that has left over 500 dead, according to Norway-based NGO Iran Human Rights.</p>

<p>Iran has also hanged seven men in protest-related cases in what campaigners describe as a deliberate policy to create a climate of fear through capital punishment.</p>

<p>Amnesty International warned this week another seven men are at risk of being executed in connection with the protests.</p>

<p>In dozens of Iranian cities, Amini's passing sparked months-long protests. One of the most significant threats to the Islamic Republic since the 2009 Green Movement rallies that drew millions of people to the streets was presented by the demonstrations.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The third winner is Narges Mohammadi, who has worked as a journalist for several years and is known for her activities as an activist.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">The UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization World Press Freedom Prize is coined for Guillermo Cano, a Colombian journalist&nbsp;who was assassinated in front of the offices of his newspaper El Espectador in Bogota on Dec. 17, 1986. Since 1997, the prize has been presented on May 3 to coincide with the World Press Freedom Day.</p>

<p>UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay announced the winners at a ceremony in New York, saying: “Now more than ever, it is important to pay tribute to all women journalists who are prevented from doing their jobs and who face threats and attacks on their personal safety.”</p>

<p dir="ltr">Zainab Salbi, chair of the international jury of media professionals that finalised the winners, said the brave work of the three winners “led to a historical women-led revolution.”</p>

<p dir="ltr">“They paid a hefty price for their commitment to report on and convey the truth,” Salbi said. “And for that, we are committed to honouring them and ensuring their voices will continue to echo worldwide until they are safe and free,” she added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Iran's judiciary revealed in late April that Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi, two reporters who broke the news of Amini's death, had been charged with working with the US, violating national security, and spreading "propaganda" against the system.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Although nearly 100 journalists have been detained amid the protests, Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi's reporting was essential in the days following the death of Amini to spread awareness of the outrage that followed. Mohammadi and Hamedi both work for the reformist journal Ham-Mihan, whereas Hamedi works for the reformist newspaper Shargh.</p>

<p>Human rights activists in Iran estimate that at least 529 people have died during protests since they started.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ahead of the vote, President Ebrahim Raisi batted for him and urged "stability in the management of this ministry". Even Amin argued, "The automobile industry is based on assembly and domestication, so it has problems with the ups and downs of sanctions."</p>

<p>According to reports, the major reason that contributed to Amin's downfall was supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say in major policies criticising the high prices and low quality of home-made products including cars.</p>

<h2><strong>Rial plunges to historic low</strong></h2>

<p>Earlier this year in February, the Iranian currency, the rial plunged to its lowest with the US dollar fetching as much as 601,500 rials on Iran's unofficial market. At the time, the Iranian authorities blamed the currency's fall on "the enemies' plot" to destabilise the Islamic Republic.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reports also attributed this drop to the country’s increasing international isolation over its human rights violations and reportedly supplying drones to Russia.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

Psychosis, hysteria and pranks: Iranian police comes out with explanation for schoolgirl poisonings

According to Iran’s official IRNA news agency, over 20,000 people who participated in widespread anti-government protests have been pardoned. This comes months after tens of thousands of people took to the streets across the country in protest following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini who passed away after she was detained by authorities for her alleged breach of the dress code.

<p>Iran's Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei said on Monday (March 6) that women violating the Islamic dress code will be punished, reported Iran's official IRNA news agency. The report has come less than a year after Mahsa Amini's death.</p>

<p>Mahsa Amini (22) was detained by Iran's feared Morality Police in September last year for her 'inappropriate attire.' Amini's custodial death sparked nationwide protests which the authorities found hard to contain.</p>

<p>"Removing one's hijab is equivalent to showing enmity to the Islamic Republic and its values. People who engage in such an abnormal act will be punished," Ejei said as per IRNA news agency.</p>

<p>"With the help of the judiciary and executive, authorities will use all available means to deal with the people who cooperate with the enemy and commit this sin that harms public order."</p>
