At least 80 newborns have died at the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of the district hospital in the Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh over six months. In response, the local BJP MLA called for a detailed investigation into the mortalities. Reacting to the development, hospital officials have attributed the deaths to premature births, low birth weight and complications among critically ill infants. BJP MLA Dinesh Rai Munmun alleged on Tuesday that doctors were not available at night to attend to patients. In response, Civil Surgeon Dr Vinod Kumar Navkar explained that the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) handles critically ill infants referred from remote rural pockets across the district. “Many times, these babies are born at six, seven or eight months. They have complications and require specialised care,” Navkar said. “According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Government of India data, a baby’s normal birth weight should be 2.5 kg. When a baby is born prematurely and weighs less than this, the mortality rate can be as high as 48 per cent,” he said.
Complications during delivery of child
Navkar also pointed out the complications arising during labour and delivery as a contributing factor. He claimed that the district hospital had treated 1,188 newborns more than the preceding six months, of whom 642, over half, had a birth weight below normal. He further added that 582 infants with low birth weight had received treatment, including babies weighing 1,100 grams, 900 grams and even 500 grams. Hospital authorities confirmed nearly 34 deaths between April and June, and 46 deaths between July and September. Navkar defended the hospital’s performance, saying the neonatal mortality rate at the SNCU was below 7.5 per cent, considering it lower than other districts in the Jabalpur division of the state. He also referred to 10 per cent as a recommended mortality benchmark for neonatal units. He further flagged the need for stronger support from the paediatrics department at the medical college attached to the district hospital, saying the hospital had requested assistance but the necessary duty arrangements had not yet been put in place. This explanation comes even as several families have alleged that their newborns did not receive timely or adequate care. Also read: Woman allegedly attempts to attack Mamata Banerjee with knife, TMC says Manish Warkade, from Dungariya village in Barghat block, alleged that his wife did not receive timely care after being admitted to the hospital in July. Madhya Pradesh woman plots husband’s murder with lover, fakes it as robbery

A family in Madhya Pradesh's Indore was cheated of Rs 1 lakh after fraudsters staged a fake kidnapping through a morphed video call using deepfake technology, showing their minor son in distress. The incident happened when their son, studying in Class X, did not return home after his tuition class. According to a report by the Indian Express, the police said the family had previously scolded the child; when he didn't return home and remained untraceable for long hours, they filed a missing person complaint at the local police station. In order to find the boy quickly, the family also shared his footage and contact details on social media. Later that night, the family reportedly received a video call from unidentified individuals claiming the child had been abducted. During the call, the boy was allegedly shown on camera and appeared to be in danger. The callers demanded Rs 1 lakh for his safe return and instructed the family to send the money via a QR code. Fearing the threat was real and concerned for the child’s safety, the family transferred the amount, according to police.
Police suspect cyber fraud using deepfake technology
However, the situation changed dramatically the next day when the boy returned home on his own. He reportedly informed his family that he had gone to a nearby temple for darshan and had not been kidnapped. He also said he had not been harmed or threatened. Soon after the boy claimed, the family informed the police, suspecting it was cyber fraud. Additional DCP (Crime) Rajesh Dantodiya said the case seems to involved advanced level cybercrime involving manipulated visuals. He explained, “family was convinced because they saw what looked like their own child in the video call. Such videos can now be convincingly morphed using advanced technology”. Dantodiya added that the video shown to the family depicting the child being threatened, was not a real kidnapping. He noted that police have strong reasons to believe that deepfake technology was utilised to dupe the family after creating the extortion video. After eight cases of elopement in the past six months, residents of the Panchewa village in the Ratlam district of central India’s Madhya Pradesh state have issued a decree, calling for a total social and economic boycott of such couples and the families whose children opt for love marriages. Videos from the village that have gone viral show a man reading from a register about the social and economic boycott of families where ‘love marriages’ had been reported. The man is heard saying that barbers and priests are forbidden from serving such families, villagers are barred from buying goods or milk from them, and their farmland cannot be leased. Moreover, anyone assisting such couples or providing shelter to them also faces a similar boycott. The man announces that young men and women who elope and marry for love as well as their families would not be invited to any event. Even those helping such couples and their families would face the same action, he further said.
‘We married by choice and settled down, being harassed now’
Among those facing the diktat is a couple who married in June 2025, even though the families of both have now accepted their union.“We married by choice and consent and settled down peacefully in our conjugal life. But some people are now harassing us,” said one couple. The decree sparked tension in the village, prompting Jat community members, along with Rashtriya Jat Tejveer Sena, to approach the district collector and SP on Tuesday, demanding action against the people involved in issuing such a decree. As per some reports, the locals said that no social boycott was done, and the exercise was done only to discourage youth from eloping.
‘Legal action will be taken against those involved’
Ratlam Collector Misha Singh told media that the matter has been taken into consideration and an investigation is on, while denying that the decision was taken by the Gram Sabha. “It’s a recent video where some local persons, led by one Manohar, took such decisions and made announcements. Another opposition leader, Arif Masood of the Congress also said that the "unregulated use of loudspeakers" in religious places and other public places should not be banned at all.

"It is not a new decision. It would have been nice if a decision had been taken on the farmers and the unemployed people. It would have been nice if he (CM Mohan Yadav) had given a statement on inflation, we would have welcomed it," said Masood.

He also claimed that while the newly elected CM was supposedly quoting the Supreme court order about ban on loudspeakers, the apex court hadn't imposed any such restrictions.

"The Supreme Court has not imposed any restrictions anywhere on what (referring to loudspeakers) he (CM Yadav) is talking about. It (loudspeakers) should not be banned at all," he said.
