Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday that a new “iron curtain” in descending between Russia and the West due to ongoing invasion in Ukraine. The crisis in Ukraine has been going on since February and that has prompted the European Union (EU) and the United States to enforce crippling sanctions on Russia. In a press conference, Lavrov said that the “process has begun” for the closing of a new iron curtain between Russia and the Western countries.

“As far as an iron curtain is concerned, it’s practically already coming into place,” Lavrov said.

“Let them just behave carefully,” he said of the current relationship between Russia and the West.

Lavrov also said that Russia does not have any relations with the EU for a number of years since the annexation of Crimea and they do not have trust in both “Washington and Brussels”

“The EU is not at all interested in understanding our interests. It is interested in what has been decided in Brussels. And what has been decided in Washington has been decided in Brussels.”

The other major development from the ongoing crisis has been the inclusion of Finland and Sweden into the NATO alliance. While Türkiye did have a number of objections to the NATO expansion, but they finally signed an agreement with the two countries to finalise the development.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned NATO against putting infrastructure in the two countries.

In a press conference, Putin made it clear that “if military contingents and military infrastructure were deployed there, we would be obliged to respond symmetrically and raise the same threats for those territories where threats have arisen for us”.

Lavrov reiterated that Russia wants to maintain security for all people in eastern Ukraine "so that they are not threatened by either the militarism or the Nazification of this nation, and that there are no dangers to the Russian Federation's security from Ukrainian territory."

“Our goal does not include regime change in Ukraine. This is an American speciality. They do it all over the world,” Lavrov stressed.

YouTube said: "Our community guidelines prohibit content denying, minimizing, or trivialising well-documented violent events, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine, adding,"Under this policy, we have removed content, for example, denying that Russia invaded Ukraine or alleging that Ukrainian victims are crisis actors."

WION makes sure that the reportage reaches every corner of the world and that it should be easily accessible to all and that it should inform your opinion.

Russia continues to maintain military presence of more than 100,000 troops near Ukraine. Although it claims that it did not have invasion in mind, various statements from the Russian camps are being taken to be an effort towards creating a pre-text.

Russian stock markets surge

Russia's main stock market reacted positively to the news of Lavrov talking of 'chance' of agreement with the West. Russian currency ruble clawed back some losses.

The RTS index was down just over two percent in late afternoon trading, as other world markets also came off their lows.

It had dipped more than four percent in earlier trading, as Western countries feared Moscow was preparing for an imminent invasion of Ukraine.

Since the start of the year, the RTS index has shed around nine percent.

The Russian currency, meanwhile, traded at more than 76 rubles to the dollar. It had passed the 80 rubles to the dollar mark in January, a first since November 2020.

The euro stood at more than 86 rubles.

West is alarmed over Russia's buildup of troops along Ukraine border. Though Russia says it will not invade Ukraine, it is constantly saying that it is facing threat from its neighbour. This is perceived by many as Russian attempts to create a pretext for inavsion.

Russia is fiercely opposed to Ukraine's inclusion in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated this stance in media interaction few days ago.

On Sunday, it was reported by Russia's Tass news agency that the country was considering a proposal for dialogue it received from NATO. This proposal is separate from any that may pertain to Russian talks with the US. As per the report, NATO proposal suggested that the talks begin on January 12.

Last week, Russia unveiled its wish list of security proposals. The list includes demand that NATO give up any military activity in Eastern Europe and Ukraine.

The United States, the European Union and the Group of Seven have all warned Putin that he will face "massive consequences" including tough economic sanctions in the event of any new Russian aggression.
