Dal Lake is considered the Jewel in the Crown of the Kashmir Region, but the Lake has been dying a slow death due to Pollution and Illegal Encroachments over the years. And now finally, the government and Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA) are working on the restoration of the Lake to its pristine water quality and opening of the navigation channels which have been closed for decades. Around 20 navigation channels are being opened and restored in Dal Lake. This will help the people to navigate freely in the lake while also improving the quality of the water.&nbsp;

''We are working on 20 navigation channels at the moment, work on seven of the channels has been completed and work is going on for 13 more. We are hoping that the work will be completed by the end of this year. Navigation channels are very important for the inhabitants living on the lake, It helps them to move easily. The tourists get to see the interiors of the lake and moreover have an in-depth look into the lake. The water quality also improves due to the opening of these navigation channels, these channels help water to circulate. Dal Lake has a lot of aquatic life, the more these channels would be opened the more the aquatic life would spread. The work on these channels has been started after around two decades,'' said Tanvir Ayub, AEE, Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA).&nbsp;

Opening these Navigation channels around the Dal Lake will not only help the local inhabitants of the lake but also the tourists coming to Srinagar. Dal Lake is among the most frequently visited places by tourists in the Kashmir region and by opening these channels, tourists can get to see the interiors of the lake.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
''It helps the lake as well as the inhabitants of the lake. Their manoeuvring, they can navigate easily plus the tourists can see the inner side of Dal Lake, the water circulation would be better, and the quality of water will improve as well. Almost all the channels were blocked. We are opening them and widening them as well. We are getting support from locals in helping us to beautify the lake,'' said Masood Ahmad Khan, Official LCMA.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
The locals living on the lake say this will help them further in taking tourists to the interiors of various areas of the city via Dal Lake.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
''It will help us a lot to move around the lake. Tourists can also visit the interiors of the lake after opening of these channels. It will beautify the lake and its great work being carried out by the authorities. Due to the opening of these channels, we will be able to move around easily on the lake,'' said Suhail Ahmad, Local.

One of the Major pollutants for the Lake has been the sewage coming from the houseboats on the Lake. With more than 600 houseboats on the lake, there has not been a proper sewage system in place for these houseboats. Most of the waste coming from these houseboats has been dumped in the lake. &nbsp;And now the government is laying a sewerage network for these houseboats. Floating pipes have been laid from where all the waste would be collected at a chamber and later shifted to the closest treatment plant. This will help clean the lake and to nurture the aquatic life in the lake.&nbsp;

''There are around 600 houseboats on Dal Lake, they have been divided into eleven clusters and initially we are taking the sewerage network of the houseboats for cluster number two in which we have around 70 houseboats to check the inflow of sewage into the lake. We have laid 200 mm HD Pipes, the network will be all floating, finally the sewage generated by the houseboats will be collected in a chamber from where it will be lifted to the nearest sewer line where it will be treated. The sewage generated by the houseboats used to go into the lake, and now with these steps the water quality will improve. The houseboat owners have to understand that it has to be a joint effort between people and the government. The waste has to be disposed of properly, '' said Tanvir Ayub, AEE, Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA).&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
The houseboat community living on the lake is extremely excited about the step taken by the government. They say that it will keep the lake alive for generations to come.&nbsp;

''This was extremely important, and it will add to the charm of the Lake. It will be like the old days. The Dal Lake is famous, and our tourists always used to ask about the drainage system of these houseboats and now with these sewage pipes and system in place, it will be a cleaner lake. It's a great step for all of us. It's great for the new generations as well. Dal lake is the pride, and we need to do everything to save the lake, '' Farooq Ahmad Dar, Local.&nbsp;

Srinagar has been named among the top places to visit in 2023 and Dal Lake has been called the most exquisite sight to visit.&nbsp;

Dal Lake: 20 navigation channels opened after decades, sewage pipes laid for houseboat waste disposal

Gone are the days when racial profiling was a thing...at least that is how it should be. However, a recent report has revealed that a Chinese security company has been advertising a controversial feature: Ethnicity recognition.

Hikvision has reportedly been touting this feature to its customers in the United Kingdom and other European countries. This is even as the company already faces a ban in the UK over its involvement in ethnic cleansing in the Chinese province of Xinjiang.

The company was also placed on the US blacklist back in 2019, over allegations of human rights violations, and surveillance of Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

As per a Guardian report, in a brochure on its website the company advertised a range of features like “optional Demographic Profiling Facial analysis algorithms”, including “gender, race/ethnicity, age” profiling. This was allegedly&nbsp;in collaboration with UK startup FaiceTech.

However, FaiceTech denied ever having worked with Hikvision and said that the document was created without its knowledge and consent. It also sent a legal letter to Hikvision, demanding they remove the brochure since it can deceive the public "that our client (FaiceTech) is in some way associated with Hikvision".

Reportedly, the Hikvision website also cited a second, Italian-based company offering racial profiling in a post that has since been removed.

Guardian reports that the racial profiling posts were removed following an inquiry by the publication and the company said that the technology was never even sold in the UK.

The brochures were reportedly first discovered by Big Brother Watch, a campaign group. The group's legal and policy officer, &nbsp;Madeleine Stone said that "Hikvision’s surveillance products pose a real threat to rights and security. The government must act now to ban this rights-abusing technology."

She also said that such "intrusive surveillance capabilities" have no place in a democracy.

IIP allows people outside European Economic Area (EEA) i.e., EU, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein to gain residency rights in lieu of investments worth €1 million ($1.05 million).&nbsp;

China's zero-Covid policy which has been in place for almost three years now has negatively affected the nation's business and economy, While the policy kept China out of recession in 2020, after nearly three years the bills "are mounting", says the report. The bills have placed an extraordinary strain on the nation's municipal authorities.&nbsp;

Talking to CNN business, George Magnus, an associate at the China Centre at Oxford University predicted that if lockdowns and mass testing continue, the risk to the nation's financial stability will increase.

Compared to the federal government, local governments are more at risk because their income is mainly dependent on land sales. According to data from China's Ministry of Finance, they borrowed heavily to fund their expenditures of 11.8 trillion yuan ($1.65 trillion), which were higher than their revenue collections between January and October.

China's economic health is directly threatened by the nation's soaring debt levels. It not only raises the possibility of municipalities going into default on their debts, but it also limits the government's capacity to promote economic growth, maintain jobs, and strengthen public services.

Between January and October 2022, land sales fell by 26 per cent and are on pace to experience their first decline in seven years.

Meanwhile, as per official data, the spending on Covid-related healthcare soared by 13 per cent to reach $245 billion or 1.75 trillion yuan.

Compulsory testing which was largely government-funded has hit treasuries and many cities across the country while maintaining the mandatory negative test have now asked the citizens to pay for the tests.

According to the statement, the target was a location "where the majority of the organisation's rockets in the Gaza Strip are being manufactured."

“I feel like the fact that 5 of President Biden’s Secret Service rental cars suddenly burst into flames in the Nantucket Airport parking lot less than 24 hours after they were returned should maybe be a slightly bigger story,” said one user on Twitter.

As per Forbes an investigation of the incident is underway. The current popular theory is that the fire began in a Ford Expedition, which has been under a safety recall since May because of a defective battery junction box known to cause fires.

However, as per the Daily Beast, the car company Hertz is investigating the fire. Anthony Guglielmi, a Secret Service spokesman said that they had no issues while driving the vehicles and that the cars were returned without incident.

India's central bank RBI will launch the country's first pilot for a retail e-rupee on December 1st (Tuesday).&nbsp;The e-rupee will be the Reserve Bank of India's version of the central bank digital currency (CBDC) and will cover select locations and would be available to a closed user group to start with. The group as per the bank will include merchants and some participating customers.&nbsp;"It would be distributed through intermediaries such as banks."

The pilot will be launched in two phases. The first phase will have four banks participating across four cities, these banks are State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank and IDC First Bank.

"It would be issued in the same denominations that paper currency and coins are currently issued," said RBI in a statement. However, unlike normal bank deposits, this would not earn users any interest and could not be converted into other forms of money.

"The pilot will test the robustness of the entire process of digital rupee creation, distribution and retail usage in real-time," said the bank.

Based on the pilot test results, the central bank will then test other applications and features of the e-currency.

Previously, on November 1, the Indian central bank also launched a pilot of the wholesale e-rupee. In it, nine participating banks have for a month been transacting in government securities using the e-rupee.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reportedly debating allowing gay and bisexual men in monogamous relationships to donate blood without abstaining from sex, as required under the current guidelines.

A Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report citing sources familiar with the plans said that the FDA plans to issue the new rules in the coming months.

Under the new guidelines, the donors would be required to complete an individualised risk assessment similar to that used by Canada.

People with no new sexual partners in the past three months will be free to donate blood. Those who report new partners would have to answer follow-up questions like whether they engaged in anal sex or not.&nbsp;

Those with no anal sex encounters in the last three months will be allowed to donate blood, while those who reply yes to the question will have to wait another three months before being eligible to donate.

As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) compared to other forms of sex unprotected anal sex carries a higher risk of HIV infection.&nbsp;

AFP reports that as per estimates every minute plastic garbage amounting to a truckload is dumped into the sea, and it is predicted that by 2040 the amount will triple.

The meeting in Uruguay which will last for five days is the first step in the negotiations towards establishing a legally binding global plastics treaty as agreed upon during the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi in March.

"That means working with the private sector, that means working with environmentalists, that means working with communities, that means strong political leadership," she added.

Hundreds of nations get together to begin negotiations on groundbreaking deal targeting plastic pollution

Somalian security forces successfully ended the hours-long siege of a key hotel in the country's capital Mogadishu on Monday (November 28th). The latest attack by al Shabaab militants claimed eight lives as per officials.

The Villa Rose Hotel, which is located near the nation's Presidential residence and is frequented by government officials came under siege by al-Shabaab militants on Sunday night.

21 hours after the attack started, a spokesperson for the Somali national police Sadik Dudishe told the press that "the clearance operation in the Villa Rose Hotel has ended."

As quoted by AFP Dudishe also said that the Jihadists have &nbsp;"killed eight civilians who stayed in the hotel," however he added that the "security forces succeeded in rescuing about 60 civilians" and that no one among the rescued civilians was wounded.

He added that one member of the security forces also died during the operation.

Eight civilians killed in al-Shabaab's latest attack on Mogadishu, hotel siege ends after 21 hours

On Tuesday, Singapore Airlines Lt (SIA) announced its plans to invest $250 million into India's national carrier, Air India. The deal is&nbsp;as part of a merger of its Vistara full-service airline joint venture with Tata Sons.

Following the deal, the airline will emerge as Air India's 25.1 per cent owner. Under the agreement, it stands to spend up to&nbsp;$615 million which as per reports will be stake, payable after the completion of the merger. The company said that it would fund the growth plans through its internal cash resources.

The Singaporean carrier in a statement said that subject to regulatory approvals, the two companies are aiming to complete the merger by March 2024. Additionally, the pair have agreed to "additional capital injections&nbsp;in Air India if required to fund growth and operations over the next two financial years".&nbsp;

Singapore Airlines Ltd's Chief Executive Goh Choon Phong said "We will work together to support Air India's transformation programme, unlock its significant potential, and restore it to its position as a leading airline on the global stage".

Currently, the Singaporean carrier owns a 49 per cent stake in the Tata SIA airlines which operate Vistara, while the rest is owned by Tata Sons.

A self-declared white supremacist teenager on Monday pleaded guilty to a supermarket massacre that in the May of this claimed the lives of ten black people in New York, United States.

19-year-old Payton Gendron will now spend the rest of his life in prison. The teenager as per AFP pleaded guilty to one first-degree state charge of domestic terrorism motivated by hate, as well as 10 counts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder.

Reuters reports that Gendron is the first person to be charged under a newly enacted New York state statute. The law as per Democrat and Chronicle went into effect in late 2020 and under it, the first-degree domestic charge carries the penalty of life without parole.

Talking to reporters Erie County District Attorney John Flynn said &nbsp;that Gendron has pleaded guilty to all charges and that "while justice has been accomplished, nothing will ever bring back the 10 beautiful people who lost their lives on that day."

He expressed hope that the "legal closure will provide the families and the victims some measure of relief."

The teenager's attack as per AFP was motivated by hate and he had planned it over months, specifically targeting the Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo due to its large surrounding African-American population.

Among the victims identified&nbsp;were the infant boy's parents, a&nbsp;5-year-old girl and her 11-year-old brother, a Bulgarian tourist and a 31-year-old resident of the island, reported Associated Press.

The word is by no means new, but this year saw an ever-increasing interest in it, with over 1740 per cent increase in instances of people looking for its meaning.

What does 'Gaslighting' mean?

As per Merriam-Webster, there are two definitions of the word, but both of them have to do everything with disorientation, mistrust, manipulation and selfish motives.

One way to describe it is an "act or practice of grossly misleading someone, especially for one’s own advantage."

Another definition describes gaslighting as the "psychological manipulation of a person usually over an extended period of time that causes the victim to question the validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories and typically leads to confusion, loss of confidence and self-esteem, the uncertainty of one's emotional or mental stability, and a dependency on the perpetrator".

As per Psychology Today, "The “I’m sorry you feel that way” approach, along with avoiding an argument in lieu of admitting fault, is good old-fashioned gaslighting".&nbsp;

<h2>When was the word coined?</h2>

The origin story of gaslighting is interesting, to say the least. In 1938 British novelist and playwright &nbsp;Patrick Hamilton wrote a play, that tells the story of a dysfunctional couple.

It is a dark tale of "a marriage based on deceit and trickery", in which the husband Jack Manningham tries to steal from his wife Bella, resorting to antics that escalate to the point of driving her insane.

His mysterious activities in the attic cause the house's lights to dim. When Bella mentions the strange phenomenon, Jack insists that the lights are not dimming. the repeated denial makes Bella doubt her sanity.&nbsp;

This sinister story titled 'Gas Light' gave birth to many play and movie adaptations and the word "Gaslighting".

"Medical gaslighting" has been used to describe doctors who inappropriately, unfairly dismiss patients' concerns.

The word gaslighting may be "in" right now, but remember, it remains a serious psychological manipulation that can make its victim suffer distress at a level where their self-worth suffers and they're "second-guessing everything".&nbsp;

As per Reuters, the National Health Service (NHS) nurses' walkouts are the first in what could be a series of walkouts after the government rejected a proposal for negotiations to address demands for pay increases of five&nbsp;per cent over inflation.

"Nursing staff have had enough of being taken for granted, enough of low pay and unsafe staffing levels, enough of not being able to give our patients the care they deserve," said Royal College of Nursing (RCN) General Secretary Pat Cullen.

This will be the most recent strike in Britain. This year, numerous public and private sector employees—from lawyers to ground crew at airports—have also held protests.

Workers across a range of industries in the UK have been demanding pay increases to keep up with rising prices due to decades-high inflation and a cost-of-living problem.

The nurses' strike as per AFP comes amid the first in a series of two-day walkouts by railroad workers and more stoppages by postal workers in the run-up to Christmas.

Steve Barclay, the UK's health minister, shared concern over the strikes and expressed his great gratitude for the "hard work and dedication" of nurses. He said that the NHS has "tried and tested plans" to minimise disruption and guarantee emergency services are maintained.

"These are challenging times for everyone and the economic circumstances mean the RCN's demands, which on current figures are a 19.2 per cent pay rise, costing £10 billion a year, are not affordable," he said.

In September, NHS said that nurses were skipping meals in order to clothe and feed their children and struggled to pay for growing transportation costs.

Due to rising energy and food prices, British inflation has been on the rise and hit a 41-year high of 11.1 per cent in October. &nbsp;

According to the health minister, Jane Ruth Aceng, there are indications that Uganda is "winning" the battle since the number of new cases being reported is falling.

The&nbsp;Uganda office of WHO said that as of November 22, no cases have been reported for nine days in Kampala, 10 days in Mubende, and&nbsp;12 days in Kassanda.

Mubende and Kassanda, were originally placed under a 21-day lockdown on October 15.

Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has come out in defence of the outgoing Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa. The agency said that the allegations surrounding the army chief and his family members making the rounds on social media were "misleading".

A recent report by Pakistani investigative news website FactFocus claimed that Gen Bajwa and his family amassed assets worth 5.66 billion US dollars (12.7 billion Pakistani rupees) over the past six years of his term. This includes assets and businesses&nbsp;both within and outside Pakistan.

Ishaq Dar, the finance minister, initiated an investigation shortly after the news was released and stated that the leak&nbsp;violated "the complete confidentiality of tax information that the law provides."

However, the military's media wing ISPR&nbsp;said in its statement that the data presented in the report was exaggerated and based on assumptions, reported Dawn.&nbsp;

Calling the allegations "blatant lies and malice" the agency said that the report is totally untrue and that Gen Bajwa and his family regularly file their tax returns.&nbsp;"Like every citizen, the army chief and his family are answerable to the tax authorities for their assets."

The Digital Services Act, a new set of regulations, which go into effect in February 2024, mandates that online platforms do more to monitor the internet for illegal content or face fines of up to 6 per cent&nbsp;of their annual global revenue.

"If tomorrow at 6:00 pm (1600 GMT), or in the morning, the government doesn't attack us, we will still be there," he said.&nbsp;

To address the underlying issues that lead to conflicts, he claimed that the group was, "always ready for a direct dialogue with the Congolese government."

The ceasefire was reached at a mini-summit in the Angolan capital of Luanda on Wednesday.&nbsp;

It calls for the end of hostilities in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo as of Friday night and the M23 rebels' "withdrawal to their initial positions" after evacuating "occupied zones."

Ruling out direct negotiations with the group Congo's foreign minister, Christophe Lutundula, said: "Tomorrow, 6:00 pm, the M23 must stop all its attacks" during a press conference on Thursday in Kinshasa.

The writer has filed the complaint with a federal court in Manhattan under New York's Adult Survivors Act. The new rule gives victims of sexual assault a year to file a lawsuit against their alleged abusers, even if the incident took place in the past and the statute of limitations has run out.&nbsp;Survivors can sue their alleged abusers starting Thanksgiving Day (November 24th).

Reuters reports that in her complaint, Carroll has also charged Trump with battery in an alleged encounter at the Bergdorf Goodman store in Manhattan.

She claimed that Trump's battery left her with psychological damage, unable to maintain a romantic relationship, which she used as evidence for her battery claim.

This is Carroll's second defamation case against Trump, the first one was filed in 2019 after the billionaire initially denied the accusation.

Donald Trump has repeatedly denied raping Carroll or even knowing her back then. He dismissed the accusation saying "she's not my type". He also took to his social media platform 'Truth Social' and called the writer's claims lies and "hoax".

Both parties are awaiting the outcome of an appeals court case that will address Trump's claim that his remarks as president rendered him immune from Carroll's initial lawsuit.

Carroll's first complaint risks getting dismissed if judges decided that the United States government, which enjoys sovereign immunity from defamation charges, could be used in place of Trump as a defendant.

However, even if the dismissal were to happen it would not affect her latest complaint as having left the White House in January 2021, Trump is now a private citizen.

The first lawsuit is due to go to trial on February 6, 2023, before US District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan, but as per Reuters, this is likely to be postponed due to the appeals process.

In the letter to Musk dated Tuesday and made public on Wednesday, he further requested that the committee staff be informed of the results.

"Twitter collects vast amounts of data on American citizens. Americans have a vested interest in ensuring that their private data is secure, and that the companies which they have entrusted with their private data have not been infiltrated by foreign agents," he said.

As per Reuters Republican Chuck Grassley, the senator for Iowa has made the request due to the concerns that were raised a few months back by whistleblower Peiter Zatko.

Concerns expressed in Grassley's previous letter to Parag Agarwal, the former CEO of Twitter, are reiterated in the senator's most recent letter. But according to reports, Agarwal chose not to address the issues at the time because of a $44 billion takeover lawsuit involving Elon Musk and Twitter.

In September, hacker Peiter "Mudge" Zatko who formerly served as the head of security for Twitter shared information about a Chinese threat. Zatko who was fired in January of this year disclosed that Twitter employess were concerned that the Chinese government would be able to collect data on the platform's users.

The former Twitter employee testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee and warned that, among other risks, "foreign agents" may use malware to seal user private information off of the network and use that to access sensitive data on the person's phone.
