At the time of rebranding, Musk and&nbsp;Yaccarino&nbsp;announced that the platform will become an "everything app" that would allow users to socialise, make friends and also handle finances. The vision, as per news agency AFP, was inspired by China's WeChat.

Since then, the platform has already added a new hiring tool to its arsenal; verified businesses can now post jobs to their profiles.

Furthermore, X's payment branch Twitter Payments LLC has been granted a "crucial" currency transmitter licence from the US state of Rhode Island. This licence, as per cryptocurrency website CoinWire, allows X to "engage in cryptocurrency-related activities" including exchanges, wallets, and payment processing.&nbsp;

With this licence, X can "securely store, transfer, and facilitate the exchange of digital assets on behalf of its users," it added.&nbsp;

These changes come as&nbsp;the platform's advertising business plummets. In response, the Tesla CEO has sought to build a subscriber base and pay model in a search for new revenue. The rebranding and the "everything app" model too are part of this.

Donald Trump's former lawyer Rudy Giuliani has been issued a default judgment and ordered to pay sanctions of nearly $133,000 in a defamation and civil conspiracy lawsuit brought by two Georgia election workers.&nbsp;

The workers, Ruby Freeman and Wandrea'&nbsp;ArShaye Moss, claimed that Giuliani had defamed them by alleging the mishandling of ballots in the 2020 presidential election.

<h2>Penalty for 'wilful misconduct'</h2>

US District Judge Beryl Howell imposed the 'default' judgment and monetary penalty after Giuliani repeatedly failed to comply with orders to turn over electronically stored documents and evidence sought by the two election workers' lawyers.

CNBC reports that Judge Howell criticised Giuliani for "wilful... misconduct" and "slippery" statements, failing to fulfil his obligations under the legal proceedings known as discovery.&nbsp;

In her 57-page opinion, the Judge said: "The bottom line is that Giuliani has refused to comply with his discovery obligations and thwarted plaintiffs Ruby Freeman and Wandrea' ArShaye Moss’s procedural rights to obtain any meaningful discovery in this case."

"For the reasons set out below, the pending motion [for sanctions] is granted. Default judgment will be entered against Giuliani as a discovery sanction."

The judge's ruling emphasised Giuliani's failure to comply with discovery requests and ordered him to personally pay the plaintiffs $89,172.50 as reimbursement for their attorneys' fees and costs associated with their motion to compel evidence. Additionally, two of Giuliani's companies were ordered to pay the plaintiffs $43,684 for the same conduct.

She has also ordered Giuliani and the plaintiffs' lawyers to propose three trial dates in the US District Court in Washington, DC, to determine the amount of compensatory and punitive damages he should pay due to the&nbsp;judgment.

Howell's ruling also referred to Giuliani's recent criminal indictment in Georgia related to alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.

The report by Statistics Korea found that only 36.4 per cent of South Koreans, between the ages of 19 and 34, wanted to get married. This is down from 56.5 per cent in 2012.

As per the report, the reason behind these plummeting numbers&nbsp;includes economic concerns over the rising costs of living and unaffordable housing.

Respondents who were polled last year also said that one reason they are not getting married is because they do not have enough money for marriage. Some reported feeling that marriage is simply not necessary.

<h2>How the genders responded?</h2>

Surprisingly, among those who had a positive perception towards marriage, a majority were men, and only 28 per cent of women responded positively.

In South Korea, there is even a word for women who chose to forego marriage, and remain single: "bihon".

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the reason more women are deciding to stay single could be because of their advancement in education and the workplace. This means that compared to earlier generations, the "opportunity cost of marriage" is higher for today's women.

Given the persistent gender stereotypes, getting married or having children might require women to make concessions concerning their careers or education, reports the OECD. This is especially true because of the challenges women face in returning to work after giving birth.

It's not just marriage, more and more people, as per the Statistics Korea report, are now dismissive towards childbirth. Since 2018, the number of those who choose to remain child-free is rising. More than half the people surveyed last year reportedly said they don't see the need to have a child.

The trend is a cause of concern for South Korea, where last year the fertility rate fell to a record low of 0.78. As per the OECD, 2.1 is the rate needed for a stable population, South Korea's fertility rate is the lowest in the world.&nbsp;

In an ironic twist of fate, a Chicago television crew reporting on a string of robberies was robbed at gunpoint by three men wearing ski masks. The incident happened on Monday (August 28th) just before 5am (local time) in Chicago's West Town neighbourhood.

A news crew from Spanish-language station Univision Chicago was reporting in Chicago’s West Town neighbourhood.&nbsp;

The reporter and a cameraperson were filming a story on robberies in the neighbourhood when three masked men brandishing firearms robbed them. The robbers took the news crew's television camera and other personal items.

Talking to Chicago Tribune, Luis Godinez, vice president of news at Univision Chicago, said: "They were approached with guns and robbed. Mainly it was personal items, and they took a camera".

As per Godinez, the news crew were covering a story about robberies in the neighbourhood. The story was supposed to air early on the morning news. However, the footage they had shot on robberies in West Town was also stolen along with the camera, and it never made it on-air.

<h2>What the police said</h2>

Chicago police said that the victims, 28-year-old man and 42-year-old man were outside when three masked men drove up to them in a grey sedan and a black SUV. After robbing the news crew, the robbers fled in their vehicles.

Police are yet to arrest anyone over the robbery. No injuries were reported.

To protect the privacy of the news crew, their names haven't been disclosed, said Godinez, adding: "They're OK, and we’re working on it together as a team."

<h2>Second TV crew robbery in a month</h2>

As per news agency AP, this was the second such robbery this month. Previously, on August 8th, a WLS-TV photographer was assaulted and robbed while covering a weekday afternoon news conference on Chicago's West Side.

National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians Local 41, which represents Chicago-based TV photographers, has issued a warning.&nbsp;

Raza Siddiqui, president of the union local, "Our news photographers and reporters provide a very important public service in keeping our community informed. We are committed to making sure that their safety comes first." He also told Chicago Sun-Times that some union affiliated news stations are planning to take additional safety steps like assigning security to some TV crews.

The 57-year-old congressman was elected to the US Congress in 2008. Over the years, he steadily climbed the ranks of Republican leadership.&nbsp;

Currently, he is serving as the right-hand man to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, and&nbsp;plays a pivotal role in keeping the chamber's conservative majority in line.

Colleagues and fellow politicians from the Republican Party offered messages of support to Scalise. Highlighting his remarkable recovery from the earlier shooting as a testament to his resilience, Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana said: "The same faith, family support, and internal strength that made Steve such an inspiration to others after he was shot, will bring him through this illness and once more inspire us all."

The campaign was launched after a tragic incident in August 2006, where a drunk driver claimed the lives of three children on a local bridge. This latest edition of the campaign took place at the Chikushino Automobile School in Chikushino City on August 22 and had 10 participants, including a 77-year-old.&nbsp;

Drivers were first evaluated on their reflexes and driving skills while sober. They were then provided enough alcohol to exceed the legal limit and given a driving course to complete.

Talking to CNN, a police spokesperson revealed that each participant had a driving instructor with them throughout the exercise, even riding with them in their respective vehicles.

Conducted within the confines of the driving school premises, the "hands-on event" allowed "drivers to experience for themselves the difference between driving before and after drinking and to get a sense of how dangerous drink-driving can be," said the spokesperson.

Many participants, as per the spokesperson, acknowledged that the experience highlighted how they had been "overconfident" about their ability to drive under the influence of alcohol. Japanese people consume an average of 8 litres per capita alcohol annually, this is equivalent to about 1.6 bottles of wine or 3 litres of beer per week per person.

There's nothing more irritating than noisy, crying children while travelling on a flight. Stuck for hours in the air, all you can do is put on earplugs that do little to dissipate the noise. For people&nbsp;who hate this, a Turkish-Dutch airline is set to introduce an “only adult” zone.

The service for now will be introduced on Turkish-Dutch Corendon Airlines flights between Amsterdam and Curaçao starting November&nbsp;3.&nbsp;

“This zone on the plane is intended for travellers travelling without children and for business travellers who want to work in a quiet environment,” said the airline in a statement.

The quiet section will be separated from the rest of the aeroplane “by means of walls and curtains, creating a shielded environment that contributes to a calm and relaxed flight.”

Passengers aged 16 or more can travel in this section.

<h2>How much will it cost?</h2>

Passengers in the “only adult” zone will have to cough up some extra charges for the noiseless journeys.&nbsp;

As per the airline, a seat reservation in the 'Only Adult' aeroplane section will cost passengers 45 Euros (around 48.5 US dollars). The nine extra-legroom seats will have an additional surcharge and will cost people €100 (around 107.9 US dollars) per journey.

<h2>A win-win situation</h2>

Coredon says that the adult-only zone will not only be a win for travellers looking for a quiet environment but would also benefit parents of little children.

The Libyan Foreign Ministry on Monday emphasised that it had rejected an invitation from Israel for a meeting and that the interaction between the two sides was both "unplanned and incidental."&nbsp;

Speaking to The Associated Press, a Libyan official, revealed that the meeting lasted for approximately two hours and that Mangoush later briefed the Libyan prime minister upon her return to Tripoli.&nbsp;

The official also said that this meeting was the culmination of US-brokered efforts aimed at having Libya join a group of Arab nations, and establishing diplomatic relations with Israel.

As per a US Department of Commerce statement, "Secretary Raimondo looks forward to constructive discussions on issues relating to the US-China commercial relationship, challenges faced by US businesses, and areas for potential cooperation."

Confirming the visit, China said that the US Commerce Secretary has been invited by her Chinese counterpart, Wang Wentao.

During her August 27-30 trip, Raimondo will travel to both Beijing and Shanghai, said Washington. Her visit will reportedly build on an agreement between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping.&nbsp;

Last year, the two leaders had agreed "to deepen communication between the US and the PRC on a range of issues."

Speaking to reporters during a press briefing on Tuesday, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that Raimondo will carry the message that the US is not seeking to decouple from China but rather to "de-risk", which means that Washington only seeks to protect its national security.

"Contrary to claims by some voices in China that we are seeking to slow down China's economy or weaken China's economic growth, that's just not the case," he said.

The bond, as per CNN citing court documents reviewed by it, was agreed upon after the former US president's lawyers met with the Fulton County district attorney’s office on Monday.

Reportedly, Trump's bond order is more extensive than those granted to other co-defendants.

The businessman has been explicitly barred from using social media "to target his 18 co-defendants in the case, as well as any witnesses and the 30 un-indicted co-conspirators," reports CNN.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee's order states that "The Defendant (Donald Trump) shall perform no act to intimidate any person known to him or her to be a codefendant or witness in this case or to otherwise obstruct the administration of justice."

"The above shall include, but are not limited to, posts on social media or reposts of posts made by another individual on social media," it specifies.

They also include similar terms for release — defendants have been ordered to regularly report to pre-trial supervision every 30 days, this can also be done over the phone.&nbsp;

Nineteen defendants, including Trump, were indicted in the case last week over their alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 Presidential election results. The defendants have been given the deadline of Friday 12 pm ET to turn themselves in.

At least two civilians have been&nbsp;killed in Russian air strikes on an abandoned water pumping station in Syria's rebel-held northwest.

Donald Trump's co-defendants, John Eastman, and Scott Hall, have surrendered to authorities in Georgia in the racketeering case over their attempt to overturn the 2020 election results.&nbsp;

Eastman, who is a constitutional law scholar, has been accused of devising a plan to submit a counterfeit slate of Trump electors to Congress from Georgia, in place of the legitimate Biden electors.

Meanwhile, Hall has been charged with racketeering and conspiracy to commit election fraud over his alleged involvement in tampering with voting machines in Georgia.

AFP reports that after being booked, Eastman spoke with reporters, and said that he was "confident that when the law is faithfully applied in this proceeding, all of my co-defendants and I will be fully vindicated."

Further, when he was questioned whether his stance on the election's outcome still aligned with Trump's claims of a stolen election, Eastman said "Absolutely," and that there's "No question in my mind."

<h2>When will Trump surrender?</h2>

Trump, as per reports, is expected to turn himself in at the same Atlanta jail on Thursday.&nbsp;

Writing on his platform Truth Social on Monday, Trump labelled the trial a 'Witch Hunt' and said that he would be "ARRESTED by a Radical Left District Attorney, Fani Willis," the Georgia official behind the fourth indictment against the former president.

Trump and his 18 co-conspirators have been given till noon on Thursday to turn themselves in.

The CDC's Vital Signs report mentions the various forms of mistreatment. These include instances of women being scolded or shouted at, them not receiving a response to requests for help, and not having their physical privacy protected.&nbsp;

Additionally, many reported that they were on the receiving end of threats to withhold treatments or were pressured into accepting unwanted treatment.

Survey data shows that around 30 per cent of Black women, 29 per cent of Hispanic women, and 27 per cent of multiracial women reported mistreatment during their maternity care experiences.&nbsp;

<h2>What would improving pregnancy care do?</h2>

As per the survey that was conducted in April, enhancing the quality of maternity care could play a crucial role in preventing pregnancy-related deaths.

Furthermore, it highlighted how prevalent discrimination was among pregnant women.&nbsp;It noted that "the most common reasons for reported discrimination were age, weight, and income and varied by race/ethnicity."

The survey also found&nbsp;that in general, women tend to hold back from asking questions or concerns to healthcare providers during their maternity care. This hesitation was often due to&nbsp;embarrassment about discussing certain topics, fears that they would be perceived as difficult, or because the providers were rushed.

Pregnant women without insurance — which account for 28 per cent of those surveyed, or those with public insurance (26 per cent) reported higher rates of mistreatment compared to women with private insurance coverage (16 per cent).

Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra stressed that "every mother deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Maternal care is a core component of this nation's health care." He also said, "Bias, stigma, and mistreatment have no place in our healthcare system."

During his meeting with a group of survivors in Lahaina, a city that has been destroyed by the flames, Biden said he could relate to them, because he and First Lady Jill Biden&nbsp;knew what it was like to lose a home.

"I don't want to compare difficulties, but we have a little sense, Jill and I, what it's like to lose a home," he said, as per remarks published by The White House.

He was referring to an incident from 2004. Back then he was a senator for Delaware and was in Washington for a 'meet the press' session when lightning struck a pond by his home. The bolt&nbsp;hit a wire, only to travel into his Delaware home and into the heating and air conditioning ducts.

As per an AP report from August 2004, this led to a "small fire that was contained to the kitchen."

The then Cranston Heights Fire Company Chief George Lamborn in a statement had said that "the fire was under control in 20 minutes."

"To make a long story short, I almost lost my wife, my '67 Corvette, and my cat," said Biden, adding, "But all kidding aside, I watched the firefighters, the way they responded."

As per Business Insider, the US President has earlier been accused of embellishing the story.&nbsp;Previously, he had&nbsp;said that he knew what it was like to have "had a house burn down with my wife in it."&nbsp;

'I can relate': Biden faces flak for comparing Maui wildfires to his small housefire 20 years back

US President Joe Biden was&nbsp;in Maui Monday to&nbsp;engage with local authorities, assess the on-ground situation and console victims of the devastating wildfires that have claimed the lives of more than a hundred residents.

However, people weren't happy with his late response to the terrible tragedy that unfolded in Hawaii. Several residents, mostly those from the western part of Maui, shouted insults at him and held signs reading “no comment” as he left Kapalua Airport in his motorcade.&nbsp;

Biden's arrival, on Monday, comes nearly two weeks after devastating wildfires swept through the Hawaiian island, claiming the lives of over 114 individuals.&nbsp;

<h2>Residents were visibly angry with Biden</h2>

Those gathered yelled&nbsp;“Go home Joe!” as Biden prepared to speak on the wildfires. Notably, Biden has been accused by the residents of Hawaii of late response and being indifferent to their troubles following the devastation. Locals say that efforts being made to help them aren't enough.

Other signboards read, “NO COMMENT,” “REALLY $7, “ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS”, and “FJB".&nbsp;

There were a few boards that&nbsp;endorsed&nbsp;former President Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential bid.&nbsp;

Others alleged that the airport where Biden landed wasn't used to bring in relief supplies for the affected residents.

“Where has the president been?“ Dennis Mullen, 58, a resident of Kahana said while speaking to The New York Post.

“Any number of military aircraft, planes and helicopters could have flown in here. To leave a town that was just devastated shut down was just ridiculous. The runway wasn’t cratered,” Mullen said.

<h2>Helicopter tour of the devastation</h2>

Biden, accompanied by First Lady Jill Biden, embarked on a helicopter tour of the areas ravaged by the fires upon arriving in Maui.&nbsp;

As per Reuters, they will be visiting the devastated city of Lahaina to assess the extent of the wildfire damage, engage with survivors, receive briefings from state and local officials, and deliver remarks.

En route to Maui, White House spokesperson Olivia Dalton emphasised that "It's going to be an emotional day for everyone."

Despite the fact that the President's visit comes two weeks into the devastating wildfires, Dalton said that Biden will make clear that he was concerned about the victims since day one and "intends for his administration to be there for as long as it takes."

These&nbsp;series of threats come as the United Nations peacekeeping mission MINUSMA for Mali expedited withdrawal from a base in the country's northern regions. This was done&nbsp;citing heightened security risks.&nbsp;

Mali, which has witnessed three coups in the past decade, is currently under the rule of a military junta that has been pressing for the departure of the MINUSMA UN mission which commenced in 2013 following the 2012 separatist and jihadist rebellions in the northern part of the nation.&nbsp;

MINUSMA has already handed over control of two bases near Timbuktu to Malian authorities. In spite of the UN&nbsp;compliance&nbsp;with the Junta's demand, the region remains plagued by unrest, reports AFP.

Currently, the UN mission is maintaining a camp within Timbuktu. However, its troops are slated to withdraw from the city by the end of this year.&nbsp;

As per the news agency, the ban comes days after the nation's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud revealed that a Somalian military offensive is aiming to eliminate al Shabaab, an insurgent group, in the next five months.

Members of al Shabaab — a group with linkages to al-Qaeda — often post about their illegal activities on TikTok and Telegram.

While ByteDance's TikTok and betting website 1XBet are yet to issue a comment over the ban, Telegram in its statement said: "Telegram consistently removes terrorist propaganda in Somalia and worldwide."

Somalia bans TikTok, Telegram to curb spread of 'constant horrific images and misinformation'

A US judge has labelled former president Donald Trump's appeal against his decision, allowing a defamation lawsuit filed by writer E. Jean Carroll “frivolous”.&nbsp;

The ruling was made by US District Judge Lewis Kaplan on Friday (August 18). He also denied Trump's attempt to delay Carroll's case while he pursued an appeal against the June 29 decision — which had concluded that the former president was not entitled to absolute presidential immunity for calling Carroll a liar.

<h2>‘Frivolous’</h2>

Judge Kaplan as per Reuters, remarked, "Mr. Trump has not provided a single reason for the court to find that there is any likelihood that he will succeed on appeal."

"This court certifies that the appeal itself is frivolous,"&nbsp;Kaplan wrote.

If the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan agrees that Trump's appeal is frivolous, in line with federal court procedures, it could potentially order him to pay Carroll damages and costs.

<h2>Trump's attempts to&nbsp;delay the case</h2>

Reportedly, in his attempt to secure a stay, the former president had argued that he had a substantial likelihood of proving that Judge Kaplan's June 29 ruling was incorrect. He also claimed that there was "immense public interest" in allowing the appeals court to take a decision.&nbsp;

Furthermore, Trump contended that he would suffer irreparable harm if a trial which is scheduled for January 15, 2024 took place before the appeals court's decision.

However, Judge Kaplan rejected Trump's assertions, and said that Carroll deserved her day in court without undue delay due to the businessman's other trials or his upcoming presidential campaign activities.&nbsp;

The judge also highlighted that Trump's claim of irreparable harm didn't make sense given the delay of over 3.5 years in raising the immunity defence.

"The only purported harm Mr. Trump reasonably may claim he would suffer in this case would be having to stand trial," wrote the judge in his ruling.

<h2>Trump’s legal troubles</h2>

This lawsuit is just one in a series of legal challenges faced by 77-year-old Donald Trump.&nbsp;In addition to Carroll's defamation cases, Trump,&nbsp;who is currently a leading contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination,&nbsp;is grappling with four separate criminal indictments, two of which are related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election loss.

<h2>Trump vs Carroll</h2>

77-year-old E. Jean Carroll, sued Trump in November 2019. She alleged that during the mid-1990s&nbsp;the businessman had raped her in a department store dressing room in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Previously, on May 9, in a separate verdict, a jury held Trump liable for $5 million in damages in response to Carroll's claim of sexual abuse and defamation. Trump has also appealed that verdict.

Furthermore, Trump contended that he would suffer irreparable harm if a trial which is scheduled for January 15, 2024 took place before the appeals court's decision. However, Judge Kaplan rejected Trump's assertions, and said that Carroll deserved her day in court without undue delay due to the businessman's other trials or his upcoming presidential campaign activities. Talking to Bloomberg, South Africa’s BRICS Ambassador, Anil Sooklal clarified that the upcoming summit's focus will be on promoting local currencies within the bloc.

"Trading in local currencies is clearly on the agenda, he said, adding, "There is no de-dollarisation item on the BRICS agenda."&nbsp;

"The dollar will remain a prominent global currency,&nbsp;that is a given," said Sooklal.

He said that contrary to some narratives making the rounds,&nbsp;the bloc is not a counter to the West or the G7. Instead, he said the alliance aims to "advance the agenda of the Global South and build a more inclusive, representative, just, and fair global architecture."

<h2>Other applicants</h2>

According to&nbsp;South Africa's top diplomat in charge of relations with the bloc, more than 40 countries have expressed interest in joining the&nbsp;BRICS&nbsp;group of nations. Nations&nbsp;that expressed interest include Algeria, Argentina, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Comoros, Gabon, and Kazakhstan.

Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro has been accused of paying a hacker to tamper with electronic voting machines (EVM). Appearing before a congressional inquiry on Thursday, a Brazilian hacker has testified that Bolsonaro had asked him to manipulate an EVM.

As per Delgatti, his meeting with Jair Bolsonaro was set up by right-wing lawmaker Carla Zambelli, who paid the hacker 40,000 reais (USD 8,000) for his services.

He claimed that during the meeting, Bolsonaro allegedly urged him to consult experts at the defence ministry regarding the 'request'. Purportedly Bolsonaro even offered to grant Delgatti a pardon in the event he faced legal consequences for the tampering.

Delgatti revealed, "He gave me a blank cheque&nbsp;to do what I wanted with the voting machines."

"The idea was to take a machine ... so I could install my app there and show the population that it is possible to press the button for one vote and end up with another."

Delgatti further revealed that he was unable to hack a voting machine as per Bolsonaro's request.

<h2>Troubles mount for Bolsonaro</h2>

This revelation comes in the wake of an electoral court decision that has rendered Bolsonaro ineligible for public office until 2030. This decision, as per Reuters, was taken due to his abusing his presidential powers to undermine trust in Brazil's electoral system.&nbsp;

Speaking to Reuters, a person close to the Bolsonaro family described Delgatti's allegations as "devastating."&nbsp;

A statement by Bolsonaro's lawyers vowed legal action against the hacker and asserted that Delgatti's testimony contained false information and was "totally devoid of any kind of proof, including committing, in thesis, the crime of slander."

<h2>The law</h2>

Influenced by her letter, last week, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker signed into law an amendment to the state's Child Labor Law.&nbsp;

Among other things, the new law allows teenagers over the age of 18 to sue their parents if they were featured in monetised social media videos and not adequately compensated. These rights mirror the rights held by child actors.

The new law draws inspiration from the 1936 "Jackie Coogan's Law," which was designed to prevent parents from exploiting child actors' earnings.

Starting July 1, 2024, parents in Illinois will be obligated to allocate 50 per cent of earnings from a video's content into a blocked trust fund for the child 'influencer'.&nbsp;

The exact amount, however, will depend on the duration for which the child is featured in the video. For instance, if a child appears in 50 per cent of a video, they'll be liable to receive 25 per cent of the earnings. Similarly, for a video they're in 100 per cent, they will get 50 per cent of the earnings.

Talking to CNN, Senator Koehler said that they "understand that parents should receive compensation too because they have equity in this, but we don't want to forget about the child."

Children often play a significant role in these monetised videos, yet there is no legal requirement for parents to share the video earnings with the children.

Similarly, kid influencer&nbsp;accounts that often earn as much as $20,000 for sponsored posts rarely benefit the children. These accounts are managed by parents due to age restrictions on social media platforms.

"We know with the explosion of social media that parents are using it to monetise kids being on videos. If money is being made and nothing is set up for the children, it's the same thing as a child actor," said Koehler.

Experts say that this legislation "is a long time coming." Jessica Maddox, an assistant professor studying social media influencer communities, expressed hope that other US states will follow Illinois' example.

She said, "Social media labour and careers are becoming increasingly common and viable forms of income, and it’s important that the law catches up with technology to ensure minors aren’t being exploited."
