BWF World Rankings: India's young sensation Lakshya Sen breaks into top-10 after All England heroics

Indian badminton legend Prakash Padukone had predicted ace Indian shuttler Lakhshya Sen's rise in badminton almost a decade ago. 20-year-old Sen, who has been hailed by many as the future of Indian badminton, recently became only the fifth shuttler from the country to reach the final of the All England Open Badminton Championships.

Sen joined the likes of Padukone, Pullela Gopichand, Saina Nehwal and Prakash Nath in an elite list of Indian players, who have played the final of the world's oldest and most prestigious badminton tournament. Indian badminton great Padukone, who is one of the only two shuttlers from the country to have won the All England title, had foreseen Sen's success.

Former India hockey captain Viren Rasquinha recently recalled in a Twitter post, how Prakash Padukone once told him that Sen would go on to "conquer the world". Padukone's prediction had come around a decade ago when Sen had moved to his academy in Bengaluru for training.

"A decade back when we started supporting a tiny @lakshya_sen and shifted him to PPBA Bangalore, Prakash Padukone sir told me that one day this boy will conquer the world," Rasquinha wrote in a tweet on Saturday while sharing pictures of a young Sen with Padukone and him at the latter's academy in Bengaluru.

Rasquinha revealed he had laughed off Padukone's prediction at the time but Sen has forced him to change his mind. "I laughed. But he obviously wasn't joking," wrote the former India hockey team captain.

Continuing his dominant run in the tournament, reigning Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen on Sunday thrashed India's Lakshya Sen in the final of the All England Open Badminton World Championships 2022 to clinch the men's singles title. Axelsen defeated Sen 21-10, 21-15 in straight sets to bag his second All England title.

Playing his fourth straight final at the All England Open Badminton Championships, Denmark's Axelsen was at his dominating best and ensure Sen had no answers to his attacking brilliance. After bagging his first point in the first set with a perfectly-placed down-the-line smash, Axelsen set the ball rolling in the final.

The Dane quickly extended his lead and went 6-0 up before Sen managed to draw the first blood in the game and claim his first point of the final. However, Axelsen continued to be the better of the two finalists and gave no chance whatsoever to the 20-year-old Indian prodigy as he won the first set 21-10.

Sen seemed to have found his mojo as he made a good start in the second set and kept Axelsen at the bay with some aggressive shots. The duo was tied at 4-4 before the Dane once again extended his lead to 11-5 and there was no looking back for the world no.1, who had headed into the final after a sublime run in the league matches.

While Sen produced an incredible fightback to win against defending champion Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in the semi-final, Axelsen had defeated Chou Tien Chen of the Chinese Taipei in straight sets to storm into his fourth straight final at the prestigious tournament.

Viktor Axelsen defeats India's Lakshya Sen in final to clinch men's singles title at All England Open 2022

20-year-old Lakshya Sen of India is all set for the match of his career so far - the final of the YONEX All-England Badminton tournament on Sunday day - versus the No. 1 seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark. While Axelsen is the favourite, Sen has become a dangerous adversary.

In the semi-final on Saturday, Sen upset the defending champion Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia to become the youngest Indian man to reach the last stage of the historic All-England Badminton championship, which was established in 1899. He won 21-13, 12-21, 21-19.

Sen, who is the world No. 11, said after his victory: "It's a dream and now there`s one more match to go. I am focussed on one more match."

Looking back at the encounter, he reflected: "Towards the end I was just trying to play one point at a time and not thinking of other things, that I was about to make the final or anything like that."

Jia was fulsome in his tribute to his young opponent. "He was very good with his net play on the last few points."

"No problem," the Indian badminton sensation Sen responded every time his South Korean coach Yong Su-Yoo gave him a courtside pep talk during his semi-final match against Jia. He proceeded to execute the advice to pull off a remarkable result.

He defended skilfully against Jia's thunderbolt smashes, teased him with dribbles at the net and when opportunities arose, himself put away the shuttle with a searing overhead.

Lakshya Sen vs Viktor Axelsen, All England Open 2022 final live streaming: When and where to watch?

World Championships bronze medallist Lakshya Sen showed nerves of steel as he stunned defending champion Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia to book a maiden final berth in the All England Badminton Championships here on Saturday.

The 20-year-old Sen became only the fourth men's singles player after Prakash Nath, Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand to reach the final of the prestigious tournament after outwitting sixth seed Lee 21-13 12-21 21-19 in a gruelling semifinal match that lasted one hour and 16 minutes.

While Padukone (1980) and Gopichand (2001) are the only two Indians to have won the prestigious event, Nath (1947) and women's singles player Saina Nehwal (2015) had lost in the final.

"I was definitely nervous but I was just trying to play one point at a time and not the occasion," said Sen.

"Towards the end, I was just trying to not thing about the things that was going around, it was a All England semifinal and the thoughts were coming in but I was trying to keep myself focussed.

"I am happy that I won the match and I get to play tomorrow. I will take this time to recover and go all out tomorrow."
Sen has been in sensational form in the last six months. He secured his maiden world championships bronze in December, before winning his first Super 500 title at India Open in January and finishing runner-up at the German Open last week.

Sen, who had defeated Lee the last time they faced in an international tournament six years ago at the India International Series, showed great tactical acumen, athleticism and mental fortitude as he recovered from a mid-game slump to script history at the prestigious tournament.

"I think in the first game, I got a good length. I was playing well at the nets and lifts were going really good but I made lot many errors in the second game and he got a lead in the beginning and it was hard to recover from there," said the world no 11.

"Going in the third game, I tried to play safe at the net rather then going too close and at the same time getting a good length.

"In the final few points, strategy was completely different because he is one of the best attacking players in the world and when there is lot of pressure you have to go all out and keep the attack. I knew in my head I can't play loose."
In the opening game, Sen showed great defensive skills and moved well in the court to eke out an 11-7 advantage at the interval.

Lee managed to unleash a couple of his trademark smashes to narrow it down to 10-12. Sen stayed in the long rallies and waited for his opponent to wilt, leading 13-11.

Sen stayed composed and his tactical play earned dividends as Lee fell into a heap of unforced errors to allow lead to the Indian at 17-12.

A net error from Lee was followed by a desperate return which went wide. Sen gathered two more points before grabbing seven game points when Lee erred again and the Indian sealed it in the first chance to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

After the change of sides, Lee stepped up his pace and quickly took a 9-2 lead. He mixed his shots well and also showed great reflex to outshine a fighting Sen.

The Indian smashed one out to allow Lee grab a huge 11-3 advantage at the break. The Malaysian was on fire after the breather as he unleashed a series of winners to zoom to 16-5 and eventually roared back into the contest after winning another exciting rally.

The duo continued to play at a frantic pace in the decider with Sen managing a 3-1 lead early on but Lee quickly unleashed a backhand cross court return to level the scores.

Lee seemed a step ahead in his pace and won a 67-shot rally next with Sen struggling at the back of his court.
A 372 km/per hour backhand smash gave another point to the Malaysian, who led 7-5 at one stage. A calm Sen drew parity at 8-8 with Lee going long. A body return gave the Indian another point but Lee managed to grab a two-point lead at the interval.

Playing with the drift now, Sen marginally erred in his lifts which went long and Lee was quick to move to 14-10.
A fighting Sen managed to narrow it down to 16-17 and then came up with a cross-court smash to soon grab two match points. Lee saved one before the Indian sealed it.

Considered a child prodigy, Sen is now just a step away from emulating his mentor Prakash Padukone. "...All those time when people used to say...That gave me belief that I can do it and it kept me going and tomorrow I am playing the finals," he said.

Indian women's doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will take on the Chinese pair of Zhang Shu Xian/Zheng Yu in the semifinals later in the day.

Lakshya Sen enters final of All England Championships after stunning Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia

Unseeded Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand on Friday became the first Indian pair to reach the semifinals of All England championships, joining in-form Lakshya Sen, who too reached the last four round of the men's singles competition here.

Playing their first Super 1000 event, women's doubles pair of Treesa and Gayatri, world no 46, recorded the biggest win of their career, a stunning 14-21 22-20 21-15 win over world championship silver medallists and second seeds Lee Sohee and Shin Seungchan of Korea.

World Championships bronze medallist Sen had earlier in the day advanced to the men's singles semifinals after his opponent Lu Guang Zu of China gave a walkover due to an injury suffered in the last match.

Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand are the only Indians to have reached the semifinals before in the prestigious event.

The 20-year-old Sen from Almora, who had secured his maiden Super 500 title at India Open in January and then claimed a runner-up finish at the German Open last week, will face the winner of the match between Malaysia's sixth seed Lee Zii Jia and Japan's second seed Kento Momota in the last four round.

Fifth seeded Indian pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, however, failed to cross the quarterfinal hurdle losing 22-24 17-21 to Indonesian top seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in 47 minutes.

It was a creditable performance from Treesa and Gayatri, who had started playing together only last year.
The duo will cross swords with China's Zhang Shu Xian and Zheng Yu in the semifinals.

"We didn't have pressure, that was the main thing. They are good attacking players and we didn't play that much but we gave our best," Treesa said about their clash against the world no 2 Korean pair.

Gayatri, who is the daughter of India's chief national coach Pullela Gopichand, said they just tried to give a good fight.

"We just tried to give our best. We lost the first game and were down 18-20 in the second game but I just thought we just have to fight," said Gayatri, who along with Treesa, won their first title together at Infosys Foundation India International challenge.

Asked about their maiden semifinal appearance at such a big stage, Gayatri said: "Definitely, there will be expectations but we don't feel that pressure, we just have to give our best. We want to win it for our country."

The Indian duo had won their maiden Super 100 title at Odisha Open and finished second best at the preceding Syed Modi International Super 300 event.

"I didn't think we will get an entry first of all but when we got, we felt it was a good opportunity to play top players," Gayatri said.

The Indian pair were left behind in the opening game but they made it 9-9. The Koreans started to dominate the proceedings and finally broke off at 13-13 to grab the opening advantage. Treesa and Gayatri once again lagged behind 8-12 in the second game but they fought their way to 15-15.

However, the Korean managed to grab two match point advantage. The Indians kept their nerves to pull out the game and take the match to the decider. In the third game, Treesa and Gayatri opened up an early lead and even though the Koreans caught up at 8-8, the Indian combination jumped to a 15-9 lead and then kept their opponents at bay to enter the last four stage.

Treesa and Gayatri had entered the quarterfinal after their sixth-seeded opponents Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu from Indonesia retired in the second game lagging 14-19 after winning the first game 21-18 on Thursday.

Sen, on the other hand, continued his sensational run by reaching the semifinals. He had stunned world no. 3 and two-time medallist at World Championships Anders Antonsen of Denmark 21-16 21-18 on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals.

The Indian had defeated world no 1 and Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark on way to his maiden Super 300 final last week.

But the young Indian fought his way back in a remarkable fashion to close the gap to 15-17 and then to 17-19. He levelled the score 19-19 and then 20-20 before sealing the match with two consecutive points.

India Open 2022 draws announced: Srikanth likely to face Kean Yew, Lakshya and Sindhu get easier passage

Kidambi Srikanth produced the best performance by an Indian in the men's singles event in the history of the BWF World Championships as he became the first male shuttler from the country to bag a silver medal at the showpiece event. Srikanth went down fighting against Singapore's Loh Kean Yew in a hard-fought final but did enough to etch his name in history.

Srikanth dropped just one game in the run-up to the semi-final where he met his Indian compatriot Lakshya Sen, who gave the seasoned campaigner a run for his money. Lakshya got off to a brilliant start against Srikanth, clinching the first game before the 28-year-old staged an amazing comeback to win the next two games and secure his spot in the final.

Srikanth lost against Loh Kean in the final but bettered the feats of the legendary Prakash Padukone and B Sai Praneeth, who won a bronze medal each at the 1983 and the 2019 World Championships respectively. Srikanth joined PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal in an elite list of Indian shuttlers to have won a silver medal at the World Championships.

In an exclusive interaction with WION after his historic triumph, Srikanth revealed he had no idea about being the first man from India to reach the final of the BWF World Championships and was more contented with his consistency throughout the tournament.

"Frankly, I didn't know about me being the first Indian player to make it to World Championships final in men's singles. One of the reporters told me about it after I won the semi-final. But I was happier about being consistent throughout the tournament," Srikanth told WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo in an exclusive interaction.

Srikanth had his moments in the final against unseeded Loh Kean but was defeated by the Singapore shutter's pace and agility towards the end. Srikanth came close to winning the second game when the duo was tied at 18-18 but Loh Kean managed to take the game 22-20 to win his maiden World Championships title.

Srikanth said it was a close match and could have ended up in anyone's favour had he managed to take a point or two extra after he reached 18 points in the second game.

"It was a very good match, a close one, one-two points in the second set after 18 would have made a huge difference. If I had won the second set, nobody knows what would have happened. I think I played really well but it was about one-two points at the end," said the ace Indian shuttler, who won his last big title in 2017.

"I want to push myself harder and get the goal next time. I will talk to my coach, trainer and physio ahead of India Open and I will work on what they say and will keep working on what they want me to work on," he added.

Srikanth, who won four Superseries titles in 2017 had enjoyed a stellar run that year before a knee injury hampered his progress. He missed out on a berth for the Tokyo Olympics this year due to fitness issues and lack of form. Srikanth had played his last final at the India Open in 2019.

Nonetheless, the ace shuttler said he never doubt himself and his ability to fight back. The World Championships silver medallist said it was gradual progress to reach the final at the World Championships this year.

"There was never self-doubt, I never doubted myself. I always knew I can come back, I just wanted some time before I can get into that rhythm. The World Championships was not my first tournament after 6 months where I went and performed, it was my 9th or 10th tournament (since the lockdown). I slowly started to perform, reached a few semis and quarters and then played this final. It was slow progress but I am happy it happened at the right time," Srikanth said.

He also lauded 20-year-old Lakshya Sen, who has been touted by many as the future of Indian badminton and impressed with his performances at the World Championships.

"He is been playing really well in the last few months. He is very young, passionate. It's good to see young players doing well, it's always a good sign, I am sure there are many players who would want to do well in the big tournaments, I would include myself in that list as well," said Srikanth.

Kidambi Srikanth produced the best performance by an Indian in the men's singles event in the history of the BWF World Championships as he became the first male shuttler from the country to bag a silver medal at the showpiece event.

Exclusive! Never doubted myself, always knew I can come back: Kidambi Srikanth on historic silver

Lakshya Sen, who won a bronze medal at his first World Championships, has pledged to try for gold next time, even as the young shuttler focuses on the All England Championships and the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

On Saturday, the 20-year-old from Almora finished with a bronze medal after losing an incredibly close semifinal 17-21 21-14 21-17 against seasoned compatriot Kidambi Srikanth.

"It has been a long tournament and it is difficult to take such a loss when you are so close. I, at least, got a bronze, but I am not happy. I'm not very satisfied with the performance in the semifinals," Sen told PTI.

"I played a lot of good matches, faced some tough opponents, even in the semifinal it was a close match, it could have gone in anybody's favour. The medal is something to look forward to... Next time I will go for the gold."

Sen joined his guru, the legendary Prakash Padukone (bronze in 1983), Kidambi Srikanth (2021) and B Sai Praneeth (bronze in 2019) in the list of male shuttlers from India to have won a medal at the World Championships.

"It is a good thing that in my first world championship, I made it to the semifinals and joined Prakash sir but I am looking forward to winning many more medals and events like him. Especially, I want to win the All England Championships, like him."

"The bronze medal is a big confidence booster for me, it is a stepping stone for future tournaments."

Further talking about the semi-final, Sen said, "It was a close match overall. In the last game, I made few mistakes in the end and he managed to pull out some quick points, which gave him the advantage. I could have done some things better but it was his day."

Sen had some tough matchups this week leading up to the semifinals, with two of the three matches lasting three games or more, including a gruelling quarterfinal against China's Zhao Jun Peng.

"It is hard to recover when you play three setters. The semifinal was also a physical battle. He had an easy quarterfinal compared to me, but it is a game where you have to give your best."

Sen played with a strapped shoulder and a bandaged knee, and he stated he's looking forward to getting all of his niggles worked out during the break.

"I had hurt my knee at Hylo Open when I had dived, there was pain but I managed it well. The shoulder was strapped as a safety measure as we have to play a lot of smashes during the rallies and, in slow conditions, it can be difficult. So I will fix all the niggles during the break."

Sen stated that he is eager to return to training in order to prepare for next year's big-ticket tournaments, which include the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.

"I'm looking to get back to training after the assured break. The season starts with the India Open and then Syed Modi for me."

"All the big tournaments such as CWG, Asiad, All England are lined up next year and I am looking forward to do well in these events."

Sen broke into the top 20 this year and is now aiming to move into the coveted top ten.

"After this tournament, I am hoping to reach world No. 16 or 17, that would be good thing for me, so next target will be to break into top 10 next year," he signed off.

Despite ending on the wrong side, losing 21-15, 22-20, Srikanth made India proud by securing the silver medal whereas his compatriot Lakshya Sen ended at the third spot, with a bronze medal after the two countries faced each other in the semi-finals. For the unversed, Srikanth's silver was the first by an Indian male at BWF World C'ships history. PV Sindhu remains the only gold medallist for the country in the history of the World C'ships. Tendulkar, Rijiju lead wishes as Kidambi Srikanth & Lakshya Sen make India proud at BWF World C'ships

Kidambi Srikanth scripted history on Saturday (December) 18 as he became the first Indian male shuttler to enter the final of the BWF World Championships after defeating Indian compatriot Lakshya Sen in a hard-fought semi-final. Srikanth got the better of 20-year-old Sen 17-21, 21-14, 21-17 in a thrilling encounter to book his place in the summit clash.

Srikanth had set up an all-Indian semi-final clash with Lakshya after a comfortable victory over Dutch ace Mark Caljouw. The ace Indian shuttler had dropped just one game in the run-up to the semi-final but went down in the first game against Lakshya, who displayed remarkable grittiness and resilience against the former world no.1.

It was an even start to the first game between the two Indians before Lakshya grabbed a three-point lead to make it 11-8 in his favour. Srikanth closed in on 10-11 but Lakshya forced some errors to maintain his three-point lead making it 13-16 before eventually clinching the first game 21-17.

Lakshya started the second game on a bright note once again and raced to a 5-3 lead before Srikanth fought back. The senior Indian shuttler produced some remarkable smashes and controlled the net in a brilliant fashion to close in on Lakshya and make it 8-9. He took seven out of eight points to take a slender lead and make it 11-9 in his favour.

Once in control, Srikanth didn't let Lakshya make a comeback in the second game and ended up clinching it 21-14 to force the semi-final into a decider. It was a nail-biting third game as the two shuttlers gave their all before Srikanth's patience, experience and ability to stay calm under pressure paid off as he won the game 21-17 to enter the final.

India are assured of two medals from the BWF World Championships 2021 with Lakshya confirmed to win a bronze and Srikanth to battle it out for the elusive gold medal in the final. The duo has joined an elite list of Indian shuttlers who have won medals in the men's singles event at the World Championships.

Prakash Padukone (Bronze in 1983) and B. Sai Praneeth (Bronze in 2019) are the only other Indian male shuttlers to have won the World Championships medal. Srikanth is the third Indian overall to enter the final of the World Championships after Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu.

Srikanth will be looking to match Sindhu's golden feat from 2019 when he takes on the winner of the second semi-final between Andres Antonsen and Loh Kean Yew in the men's singles final on Sunday. Sindhu remains the only Indian to have won a gold medal at the BWF World Championships.
