Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has backed ex-badminton player Prakash Padukone's comments criticising Lakshya Sen for failing to win an Olympic medal at the Paris Games. Lakshya finished fourth in the men's individual round after losing to Victor Axelsen in semis and Lee Zii Jia in the bronze medal match.

"Making excuses is where our country will win gold medals every single time, so the debate around his assessment was more about that than looking without tinted glasses at what he said," Gavaskar wrote in his column for sports magazine Sportstar.

It is to be noted that Lakshya's mentor Padukone had called out the badminton player saying: “Had he lost comfortably, it would have been a different issue. But to have come this far, to have taken the lead…I know he is young, but he cannot give this as an excuse. Take the responsibility and work harder.”

Gavaskar backed Padukone's statements and wrote: "He said that the players today get all the backing and facilities from their Federations and the government too. Therefore, they should take responsibility for their performances too. It was a point well-made and well-articulated too, without pointing fingers at anybody."

"Yet as it invariably happens in our country, which again is a champion at reading between so-called lines and imagining unintended poisoned arrows, we were quick to jump on him and denounce his comments rather than take the time to digest them and then come out with our comparatively uninformed views."

Lakshya, on the other hand, has vowed to come out stronger and win a medal in the next Olympics, scheduled in 2028 in Los Angeles, USA.

"I am determined to reflect on what went wrong and where I need to improve. I sincerely request space and privacy at this time to regroup, come back stronger, and win laurels for India," wrote the history-maker Indian badminton player.

Paris Olympics 2024: 'What can I do...,' Lakshya Sen reacts after bronze medal match loss in badminton singles

Former India shuttler and Lakshya Sen's mentor Prakash Padukone has slammed the Indian badminton players for not winning a single medal at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024.

Padukone's comments came on the back of Lakshya's loss in the bronze medal match on Monday (Aug 5) against Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia. Lakshya lost 21-13, 16-21, 11-21.

“I and Vimal are not happy with the fourth position of Lakshya (Sen). He could have definitely gotten a medal. I know (Viktor) Axelsen might say that Lakshya is the next best, but that is not good enough because there was a possibility of a medal,” Padukone told reporters after Lakshya's bronze medal loss.

“Had he lost comfortably, it would have been a different issue. But to have come this far, to have taken the lead…I know he is young, but he cannot give this as an excuse. Take the responsibility and work harder,” Padukone added.

Padukone said that the athletes need to introspect and can't ask for more from the federations as they have the best facilities available.

"At least for the results in this Olympics and the previous one, you cannot hold the federations and government responsible for the results. They have all done whatever they can. Ultimately the responsibility is on the players to go an deliver when it matters the most."

“The players need to introspect, and not just keep asking for more from the federations. They need to ask themselves whether they are working hard enough, because all of these players have their own physios and all the facilities. I don’t think any other country, including the US, has so many facilities,” he added.

Despite the loss, Laskhya created history by becoming the first India male badminton player to reach the men's singles semis.

Paris Olympics 2024: 'Had he lost...,' Mentor Prakash Padukone slams Lakshya Sen for failing to win medal

India's Lakshya Sen went down to Malaysia's Zii Jia Lee in the badminton men's singles bronze medal match at the Paris Olympics 2024 edition on Monday (Aug 6). After a defeat against Denmark's Viktor Alexson in the semifinals, on Sunday (Aug 4), many still had high hopes from Lakshya. However, the 22-year-old failed to seize the momentum and lost 21-13, 16-21, 11-21 in the bronze medal match. Although he had a 4-1 head-to-head lead over the Malaysian prior to the game, Lee held his nerves and overcame a bad start to end with bronze.

Just like against Alexson, Lakshya made a fitting start against Lee. The Indian shuttler seemed to have moved past his semifinal defeat and took the opening game 21-13. He didn't give any chance to his opponent and looked destined for success. However, the script changed soon thereafter. Lee revived in style, pushed Lakshya to all corners and showed impressive speed and agility. To add to Lakshya's woes, he picked an elbow injury which further dented his momentum as he eventually went behind in the contest.

Notably, Lakshya -- in his maiden Olympic appearance during Paris 2024 -- missed out on joining an elite group of Indian badminton players with Olympic medals. The list comprises PV Sindhu (two) and Saina Nehwal (one). However, the youngster has shown immense grit and determination throughout his campaign, while competing with some of the best in men's singles (receiving high praise from Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Alexson). The talented shuttler will be determined to make a strong comeback in the 2028 edition, to be held in Los Angeles.

After the defeat in the bronze medal match, Lakshya told Jio Cinema, "I had my chances in the second set. I could’ve definitely done better. Credit to him, he played better. I think I came well prepared for this game. It has been quite a tough week overall. I was ready to give my 100 per cent."

On playing with an injury, he stated, "In between the points, the blood was on the floor. Sometimes, it takes away the momentum. Just having that break in the game."

Lakshya impressed one and all with moments of brilliance against Alexson in the semifinal clash on Sunday, prompting the Denmark player to laud his young opponent. Post his semifinal win, Alexson said, "Lakshya is an amazing player. He has shown in this Olympics that he is a very, very strong competitor and I am sure in four years from now, he will be one of the favorites to win the gold."

Paris Olympics 2024: All you need to know about India's schedule on Day 9 as Lakshya Sen eyes historic medal

Viktor Axelsen praised Lakshya Sen despite the Indian shuttler's loss in men's singles badminton semi-final on Sunday (Aug 4) at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024.

Lakshya lost the match 20-22, 14-21 in straight games and will now play for the bronze medal. Axelsen, the reigning world champion, however said that the India shuttler will be a gold medal contender during the next Olympics.

“These rings do strange things to you. I know what they do to you mentally. Lakshya is the first Indian men’s singles player in the Olympic semifinals. No man in India has done what he has done. He’s already thinking of what is ahead. I could see that he was tensed. I knew he was getting nervous and It’s at that point that I have to be ready to take advantage of his mistake. I just have to keep the shuttle on court and wait for his mistake,” Axelsen said after win against Sen.

“I’ve gone through what he had before. But he’s going to be a real contender for the 2028 Olympics. I think the difference in experience made a difference today,” he added.

The Indian shuttler clearly showed inexperience as he failed to close the first game despite having three game points. In the second game, Lakshya was leading 7-0 before unraveling and losing 14-21.

Sen acknowledged his shortcoming in the match and vowed to give his 100 per cent in the bronze medal match.

"It was a big match. In the first game, I should have been more alert. If I could close the first game I had more chances to bring (the match) to three games and still win. In the second game, I started well but I couldn’t keep the lead and he started playing well, then it became hard to score against him," Lakshya said.

“I’ll try to be at my 100 per cent in the next match,” he said about the bronze medal match against Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia on Monday (Aug 5).

Lakshya Sen in semis

Having seen a host of big names including PV Sindhu bow out of the Olympics in badminton yesterday, Lakshya did not disappoint in his quarterfinal match against the 12 seed Chou Tien-Chen. He lost a close opening game 21-19 despite giving a good account of himself. He held his nerves but a good defence from his opponent saw him being the second best.

However, in the second and third games, Lakshya did not repeat his mistakes and came back into the match. He would win the second game 21-15 and broke his opponent’s defence on multiple occasions. The third game was a one-sided contest as he pocketed the match in little over an hour.

The win also means, that even if Lakshya loses the semifinal match he will enter the bronze medal contest giving him two chances to win a medal at the Olympics. If he succeeds in winning a medal for India he will also become the first Indian male badminton player to taste success at the Olympics. Only Saina Nehwal (2012 London) and PV Sindhu (2016 Rio silver, 2020 bronze in Tokyo) have won an Olympic medal in badminton for India. This will also mean India will have at least one medal from badminton in the last four Olympics.

Paris Olympics 2024: All you need to know about India's schedule on Day 1 as Lakshya Sen takes centre stage

Ace Indian shuttler and medal hope Lakshya Sen readies for a tough Group and glory at the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024, starting July 26. Drawn in Group L alongside world No.52 Julien Carraggi, No.41 Kevin Cordon and No.3 Jonatan Christie, Sen aims to go step by step while topping the Group as his first goal before setting eyes on a historic Olympic medal.

With his maiden Olympic qualification scenario working as a source of motivation for him, given he was all but out of the race until two successive semi finishes in March (at the French Open and All England) helped him seal the berth, Sen knows what is at stake as he prepares with a ten-member support staff in Halle des Sports Parsemain, Marseille.

“I have played all of them before. I know what to expect. It is a tough pool. But I would be playing the Belgian and Guatemalan before facing Christie, which will help me set up a good match against Christie. I have to be really sharp,” Sen said during a video chat with media from Marseille.

Having made headlines for his sharp rise in the men’s singles category over the past two years, Sen admits the Paris Games being the most important competition of his life.

“This will be the biggest tournament of my life. Competition will be very tough as everyone will bring their A-game. I have to be at my very best, play well consistently in all matches. But I am really focused and prepared for the next 2-3 weeks in Paris,” he continued.

Meanwhile, should he and his compatriot HS Prannoy win their respective groups, they will face off in an all-Indian pre-quarters clash at the Paris Olympics. However, per the record, Lakshya leads the head-to-head tally 4-3.

“As of now, I am only thinking of winning the Group. There is a lot of work to be done before the knockouts. Overall, I am really prepared to go out there and give my best. The training has been good,” Sen added.

Sen explains training routine

Currently training in Marseille – a three-hour drive from Paris – for a 12-day stint, Sen is surrounded by his coach, Yoo Yong Sung, shuttler brother Chirag, his physical trainer and physio and others.

Explaining as to why he is based here, Sen said, “We decided to come here because it is close to Paris. The main reason was to come here early, get used to the time zone and get into the sleeping pattern. Also, shuttle speed matters a lot. In Bengaluru, shuttles are quite fast.

“In Marseille, which is next to the sea, the shuttle travels much slower. Conditions will be similar in Paris even if I keep the drift in mind. We will have 3-4 days to settle down in Paris and also get some court time and be ready for the matches,” the Indian shuttler concluded.

Meanwhile, Sen’s stint will end on Sunday (July 21), and he will move to the Olympic Village on Monday.

Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen readies for tough Group, glory at Paris Olympics 2024

Indian shuttler PV Sindhu beat Denmark's Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt 21-12, 22-20 to proceed to the second round of the Singapore Open on Wednesday (May 29). Meanwhile, Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen bowed out of the tournament with a loss in the first round. Talking about Sindhu, she comfortably won the opening game 21-12 before she suddenly dropped the momentum to allow her opposition get back in the contest. The second and penultimate game was a nail-biter as Sindhu was on the verge of losing it, trailing 16-20, before she won six straight points and won the game 22-20. Thus, she closed the match 21-12, 22-20.

Sindhu will now lock horns with Spain's Carolina Marin, who beat Thailand's Wei Jin Goh 22-20, 21-18, in the second round. The Indian superstar is starting to return to her best as this win comes just a week post her second-place finish in the Thailand Masters.

Srikanth, who was struggling with a knee injury, withdrew during the second game against 5th seed Kodai Naraoka. By then, he had lost the opening game 14-21 and was already behind in the second, trailing 3-11. Lakshya started off seeming clueless against the No. 1 ranked player. While he lost the opening game in a flash, the Indian youngster was up for the challenge in the second game, where he emerged on top 21-16. However, Axelson rose his game once again and relied on an aggressive brand of play for a comeback in the contest with a 21-13 scoreline in the final game. The star Indian shuttler's prowess at the net helped him remain in the contest, however, Axelson was the better player and eventually came on top.

Overall, it was Sindhu who kept the Indian hopes alive in the Singapore Open with the twin elimination of Srikanth and Lakshya.

Badminton: India’s HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen bow out in opening round of China Open

India's Lakshya Sen continued his impressive run, notching up a straight-game win over local hope Koki Watanabe to progress to the semifinals of the Japan Open Super 750 badminton tournament here on Thursday.

A 2021 world championship bronze medallist, world number 13 Sen registered a 21-15 21-19 victory over Watanabe, ranked 33rd, to make his third successive semifinals, following his exploits in Canada and the United States. The 21-year-old from Almora, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, will play either fifth seed Indonesian Jonatan Christie or third seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn from Thailand.

In-form men's doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, however, couldn't produce their 'A' game, going down fighting 15-21 25-23 16-21 to Olympic champions Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lan of Chinese Taipei. Sen, who had won the Canada Open Super 500 early this month, opened up a 5-3 lead early on before moving to 11-7 at the break. The Indian didn't have much problem negotiating the Japanese and soon sealed the opening game with two cross court returns on both side of the court.

After the change of sides, Watanabe tried to inject some pace in the rallies but Sen looked in control and moved to 3-2 with a lovely cross court drop. A 42-shot rally ended with Sen's backhand crashing into the net as Watanabe turned it around to lead 5-3 before consolidating it further at 7-3. The Japanese strengthened his defense as soon things seemed like going down the downhill for Sen, who trailed 7-14.

However, the Indian scripted a turnaround, drawing his opponent to the net and using the drop shots to good effect. He soon turned the tables at 18-17 with a cross court smash. With two returns on his opponent's backhand, Sen gained one-match point before producing another precise return at the back-line and then threw his racquet in celebration.

Badminton: Lakshya Sen storms into Japan Open semifinals, Satwiksairaj-Chirag Shetty bow out

PV Sindhu's poor run continued as the double Olympic medalist crashed out of the first round of the ongoing Japan Open on Wednesday (July 26). Sindhu, who also faced a first-round exit in the Korea Open, suffered a 12-21, 13-21 loss to China’s Zhang Yi Man in the Super 750 tournament.

Sindhu was nowhere in control of the game. She made mistakes at regular intervals and always gave the upper hand to Zhang. The 17th-ranked failed to finish points, which has been a cause of concern for her even against lower-ranked opponents. The poor form of India's star shuttler is definitely a huge worry for her new coach, Malaysia's Muhammad Hafiz Hashim in the Olympic qualification cycle.

BARRING SINDHU, INDIAN CONTINGENT SHINES

Meanwhile, there was still plenty to cheer for the Indian contingent with the likes of Lakshya Sen and Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy moving forward. Talking about the 21-year-old Lakshya, he was made to work hard for his win against compatriot Priyanshu Rajawat. Priyanshu is already making heads turn in the ongoing season and gave a tough fight to Lakshya before losing 15-21, 21-12, 22-24.

On the other hand, Satwiksairaj and Chirag, who attained their career-best No. 2 spot in BWF rankings after Korea Open triumph, were also made to sweat hard for a victory. They went past the opening round beating Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin 21-16, 11-21, 21-13. With form and momentum by their side, the Indian pair will look to go the distance in the tournament in Japan.

Earlier, the likes of Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy and Gayatri Gopichand-Jolly Treesa emerged on top in the opening-round games. Prannoy is set to take on Srikanth in the second round which promises to be a blockbuster clash which, however, will send one packing.

Badminton: PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen win openers; Sai Praneeth bows out in US Open

On Monday (July 11), Lakshya Sen emerged on top of Li Shi Feng in straight games to win the Canada Open 2023, a BWF Super 500 tournament. It was a thrilling contest where the young Indian shuttler relied on his incredible speed and power to come on top of the reigning All England champion Feng 21-18 22-20 to clinch the title. Following this win, Lakshya has climbed up the ladder to take the 12th spot in the latest BWF Rankings.

Lakshya had dropped out of the top ten and later from the top 20 as well following his early exits from the Malaysia Open and India Open respectively, early this year. However, his position improved after a semi-final exit at the Thailand Open -- taking him back in the top 20 -- before a title win in the Canada Open saw him near the top ten.

After his memorable win over Feng, the 21-year-old called it 'one of the greatest comebacks' in his career. It is to be noted that he saved as many as four game points in the second game to grab a championship point.

After the match, Lakshya told PTI, "Coming into the Olympic qualification year, it was tough as things didn't go my way. So, this will be one of the good tournaments for me and playing the finals like that is for me one of the greatest comebacks." The Canada Open is the Indian star's maiden title after winning his first-ever gold medal during last year's Commonwealth Games in August. In addition, Lakshya is only the second singles player from the country to win a title this year after compatriot HS Prannoy's sensational triumph at the Malaysia Masters in May.

Lakshya entered the Canda Open final on the back of a straight-game win over Japanese player Kenta Nishimoto. With wins over Nishimoto and reigning All England champion Feng, the youngster will be in good stead going into the US Open Super 300 badminton tournament, which kicked off on Tuesday (July 11). Needless to say, Lakshya will be desperate to retain the momentum going forward and break into the top ten sooner than later.

Prannoy, and Kidambi Srikanth, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Masters 2023 badminton championships with contrasting wins in their respective Round of 16 encounters in women`s and men`s singles respectively, here on Thursday.

Prannoy, ranked 9th in the latest BWF Rankings, continued his brilliant run in the BWF World Tour Super 500 event in the Malaysian capital, stunning All England champion Li Shifeng of China with a superb come-from-behind victory in three games on Court 1 at Axiata Arena here.

Prannoy, who had started his campaign here with a hard-fought 16-21, 21-14, 21-13 win against sixth-seeded Hou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei on Wednesday, defeated his Chinese opponent 13-21, 21-16, 21-11 in Round of 16. He will face Japan`s Kenta Nishimoto in a last-8 encounter on Friday.

In the same men`s singles, Kidambi Srikanth, who won the silver medal in the 2021 World Championship, stunned Thailand`s eighth seed, Kunlavut Vitidsarn 21-19, 21-19 in a 45-minute clash in the men`s singles Round of 16.

Double Olympic medallist Sindhu, the sixth seed here, had it a bit easy in the women`s singles pre-quarterfinals clash as she comfortably got the better of Aya Ohori of Japan 21-16, 21-11 in 40 minutes.

Sindhu, who won a silver at Rio Olympics in 2016 and followed that up with a bronze in Tokyo 2020, will lock horns with China`s Zhang Yi Man to book a spot in the semifinals.

However, former World Championship bronze medallist Lakshya Sen was sent packing in the pre-quarterfinals by Hong Kong`s Ng Ka Long Angus, the 28-year-old ranked 14th in the BWF Rankings. Lakhsya, who is ranked 22 in the latest singles rankings, went down 21-14, 21-19.

The day belonged to Prannoy, who caused a major upset by getting the better of the reigning All-England champion. The Chinese player maintained a 4-5 points advantage as he went on to win the first game 21-13.

The Chinese shuttler narrowed the gap to one point before Prannoy won a few points in succession to make it 11-7. But Shifeng tied the scores at 11-all before Prannoy grabbed the lead again at 14-13 before making it 18-13 and went on to win the game and take the match into the decider.

In the third game, after the initial skirmishes, the 30-year-old Indian right-hander opened a gap from 4-4 to 8-5 before winning eight consecutive points to make it 16-5. While many would've expected Virat Kohli, Neeraj Chopra, MS Dhoni, etc. to make the cut, it is former Rajasthan Royals (RR) spinner Pravin Tambe who has topped the list among sports personalities.

The reason for Tambe topping the elite list can be due to a biopic on his life, which was released on Disney+Hotstar in April 2022. Actor Shreyas Talpade played the titular role in the movie, which was appreciated by many for its inspirational story and acting. Tambe has had a memorable run as a cricketer. Having not played a single first-class game at any level, he was picked by the 2008 IPL champions RR at the age of 41 in 2013. He, thus, became the oldest debutant in the cash-rich league and made heads turn with a sensational hat-trick in IPL 2014, versus the Kolkata Knight Riders. Following this, he represented Mumbai in first-class cricket and also went on to feature in several leagues across the globe.

At present, Tambe is serving as KKR's bowling coach after he was banned by the BCCI from playing any form of Indian cricket post his participation in the T10 league in Covid-hit 2020. It is to be noted that along with Google, Tambe is also the most searched Indian sportsperson on Twitter in 2022. In addition, he occupies the ninth spot in the overall list across the nation.

Surpassing the likes of Dhoni, Chopra, Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Harmanpreet Kaur, PV Sindhu, Sania Mirza, etc. is a huge feat for Tambe in his glittering career.
