Suffering from a throat infection, star Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen has withdrawn from the upcoming Australian Open Super 300 badminton tournament. The 21-year-old from Almora picked up the infection just before the Hylo Open, where he lost in the opening round to Hong Kong's Ng Ka Long Angus in Saarbrucken, Germany. The Australian Open is scheduled to be held from November 15 to 20 in Sydney.

"I had fever, throat pain and weakness after I reached Saarbrucken ahead of Hylo Open. I probably picked the infection while travelling from Paris," Sen, who has returned to India, told PTI on Sunday. "I thought it is not that serious. I was training last Sunday and then on Monday, I felt it had aggravated. I consulted doctor online and took medicine. It is under control now. But given the situation, I have decided to pull out of the Australian Open." The Commonwealth Games champion said the fact that he has no chance of qualifying for the World Tour Final also played a role in his decision of withdrawing from the tournament.

"I had sent my entries earlier as I thought it would help me to qualify for World Tour Finals but now it is not possible anymore, so it is better that I take some weeks off, get back to full fitness and start with my off-season training to be ready for the next season." The last few months have been tough for Sen, who underwent a surgery just after the World Championship for 'deviated septum', a condition which occurs when the thin wall (nasal septum) between the nasal passages is displaced to one side. "I had these conditions for the last few years. I couldn't breathe properly on both sides of my nose. One side was completely blocked. Doctors had told me it can be sorted only after I turn 18 or 20.

"But with a series of tournaments like CWG and World Championships, there was no time. So after the World Championships, I decided to go for the surgery."
Sen, the All-England silver medallist, said this was the only window as the Paris Olympics qualification will start next year. "It took 3 to 4 weeks to recover completely. But my immunity was down. The surgery went on very well. But I couldn't play at my 100 per cent all the time," the current world number eight said. "I started playing just two weeks before leaving for Europe tour. Since my qualification for world tour final was on the line, and doctor had also given a green signal, I thought let me play."
So what is his plan now?

"I plan to spend time with my family, get better and then train for next season. I will probably play PBL," said the India Open champion. Asked how satisfied he is with the way things panned out in 2022, Sen said: I made a pretty good start. Reaching the finals in some events gave me a lot of confidence. I wanted to do well in CWG, All England, World Championships, some I did well, some I didn't but it was a good season."

Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medallists Lakshya Sen and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the mens singles and mens doubles round of 16, respectively, at the Denmark Open 2022 but their compatriot Saina Nehwal crashed out of the tournament, here on Wednesday. Lakshya Sen, who climbed to a career-best world No 8 in the BWF world rankings last week, beat Tokyo Olympics bronze-medallist Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia 21-16, 21-12 in his men's singles campaign opener.

The 21-year-old Lakshya set the tone early on and took full advantage as Ginting, the world No 6, struggled to find his range on the day. Despite a late hiccup, the Indian badminton player took the opening game. He was more ruthless in the second game and it reflected on the scoreline as he extended his head-to-head record against Ginting to 3-0. Lakshya will either face compatriot HS Prannoy or China's Zhao Jun Peng in the next round.

On the other hand, World championships bronze-medallists Chirag Shetty and Satwikrairaj Rankireddy played some attacking badminton to beat South Korea's Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae 21-15, 21-19. The Indian pair, seeded seventh, will now face a tough encounter against reigning All England Open champions Muhammad Fikri and Bagas Maulana of Indonesia in the next round. Meanwhile, former world No 1 Saina Nehwal bowed out of the Denmark Open 2022 women's singles event after a hard-fought 17-21, 21-19, 11-21 loss to Zhang Yi Man of China.

After losing the first game, Saina fought back in the second and had as many as four game points before finally forcing a decider. However, the London 2012 Olympic medallist ran out of steam as Zhang Yi Man took back control in the third game and completed a fine victory. This is the third straight tournament where Saina has been knocked out in the opening round.

Srikanth, a former world number 1, recovered from his early exit from last week's World Championships, to outwit fifth seed Lee 22-20 23-21 in his men's singles opener which lasted 37 minutes. It was his first win over the Malaysian in four meetings.

The 21-year-old Sen, a 2021 world championships bronze medallist, however, squandered an opening game advantage to go down 21-18 14-21 13-21 to world number 21 Japanese Kenta Nishimoto in his first match.

London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal was also no match for top seed Akane Yamaguchi as she lost 9-21 17-21 to the local favourite in 30 minutes. Fast-rising men's doubles pairing of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila, who jumped nine places to reach world number 26 after a quarterfinal finish at the World Championships, also lost 21-19 21-23 15-21 to Korean combination of Choi Sol Gyu and Kim Won Ho after wasting a match point in the second game. .

In other results, Birmingham Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly lost 17-21 18-21 to seventh seeds Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai of Thailand in women's doubles category.

Mixed doubles pair of Juhi Dewangan and Venkat Gaurav Prasad lost 11-21 10-21 to Chinese top seed Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong in 23 minutes. It was a gritty performance from world number 14 Srikanth, who is often guilty of not being able to close out narrow matches, despite doing all the hard work in setting up the points.

On Wednesday, Srikanth once again found himself in a similar position when he almost wasted a 15-11 advantage by allowing Lee to grab three game points but the Indian held on to his nerves to reel off five points on the trot to leave his younger rival stranded and seal the opening game.

Stung by the opening game reversal, Lee showed a lot of purpose after the change of sides. He opened up a 2-0 lead early on and ensured a slender one-point advantage in the interval.

Lee stepped up a gear to move to 14-11 but soon things changed as Srikanth turned the tables to grab a 18-16 lead and then stood just two points away from a win at 20-18. It seemed there will be another twist in the tale as Lee this time saved two match points and earned himself a game point but Srikanth ensured there were no hiccups as he pocketed the required three points to shut the door on the Malaysian.

In the other singles, Lakshya was by far the better player in the opening game as he quickly ran up a 7-2 lead and jumped to 15-9 at one stage, before pocketing the game comfortably.

The Indian also made a good start to the second, opening up 8-4 lead but soon he lost control as Nishimoto dished out a sensational fightback to win 9 of the next 10 points to roar back into the contest.

Suddenly the momentum completely shifted as Lakshya seemed clueless even as Nishimoto dominated right from the start to keep moving ahead as the Indian crumbled in the decider. On Tuesday, HS Prannoy had advanced to the second round after his opponent Hong Kong's Ng ka Long Angus retired midway through the opening match.

BWF World Championships: Lakshya Sen rallies to R16 as Kidambi Srikanth bows out

Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen continued his impressive run, trouncing Danish Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus in straight games to progress to the men's singles second round at BWF World Championships here on Monday.

India also registered twin wins in women's and mixed doubles competition on the opening day which saw B Sai Praneeth bow out after losing in three games to world number 4 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei.

The 20-year-old Sen, who had returned with a bronze on his debut in Spain last year, prevailed 21-12 21-11 over an erratic Vittinghus in his opening match. Praneeth, a 2019 bronze medallist, earlier put up a brave effort before going down 15-21 21-15 15-21 to Chen in little over an hour.

It was yet another forgettable outing in Tokyo for Praneeth, following his struggles at last year's Olympic Games, where he participated without a proper coach or physio to bow out early.

However, former Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy progressed to the women's doubles second round with a 21-7 21-9 win over Maldives' Aminath Nabeeha Abdul Razzaq and Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq.

Ashwini and Sikki will face an uphill task of taming top seeds Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan of China in the second round. In mixed doubles, Tanisha Crasto and Ishaan Bhatnagar defeated German duo of Patrick Scheiel and Franziska Volkmann 21-13 21-13 in 29 minutes to also make a positive start to their campaign.

The Indian pair will meet 14th seeds Supak Jomkoh and Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand next. Lakshya, seeded ninth, played some exceptional cross court returns from deep forehand to trouble the 36-year-old Danish, who had come into the match with a 2-1 head-to-head count against the Indian.

There was no lack of effort from the veteran Danish, but he couldn't stop Lakshya from running away with the opening game, with the Indian always staying a step ahead.

A relentless Vittinghus kept testing the Indian by engaging him in fast-paced rallies, one of which was of 31 shots, but Lakshya used his winners to finish them off or the Danish miscued.

In the mid-game interval of second game, Lakshya again managed a four-point advantage after Vittinghus sent one wide, and slapped his head in frustration. At 11-15, Vittinghus made Lakshya twist and turn with his angled returns to win a point, but he was too erratic to put any pressure on his opponent.

Soon, five straight points took Lakshya to match points and he sealed it with a smash. Among others, B Sumeeth Reddy and Manu Attri lost 11-21 21-19 15-21 to Masayuki Onodera and Hiroki Okamura in men's doubles.

In women's singles, Malvika Bansod also bowed out in the opening round after losing 14-21 12-21 to Denmark's Line Christophersen.

Also Read: BWF World Championships 2022: India squad, schedule, complete draw and live streaming details Ashwini and Sikki will face an uphill task of taming top seeds Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan of China in the second round. BWF World Championships 2022: Lakshya Sen advances to 2nd round, Sai Praneeth, Malvika Bansod crash out

Indian shuttlers will be looking to continue their fine form in the upcoming BWF World Championships after their brilliant show at the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games 2022. Indian badminton players clinched a total of six medals, including three gold medals at the Games in Birmingham and will be hopeful of extending their stellar run at the World Championships in Tokyo.

However, India's medal hopes were dealt with a huge blow ahead of the World Championships after ace shuttler PV Sindhu pulled out of the tournament due to an injury. Sindhu, who won his maiden CWG gold at the Games last month, had to pull out of the tournament due to a stress fracture on her left foot.

In her absence, India's medal hopes will rely on veteran Saina Nehwal as far as women's singles are concerned. In the men's singles, the likes of Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth will start as favourites. The men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty will also be major contenders for gold at the World Championships.

A total of 26 Indian players will be in action at the BWF World Championships 2022 which gets underway on August 22 (Monday) in Tokyo, Japan. While the doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag have a favourable draw, the trio of Srikanth, Sen and HS Prannoy have all been drawn in the same half reducing India's chances of a medal in men's singles.

CWG 2022, badminton singles round live streaming: When and where to watch PV Sindhu & Co.'s matches?

Indian shuttlers dished out another splendid show to outclass Sri Lanka 5-0 in their second group A match of the mixed team competition at the 22nd Commonwealth Games here on Saturday. India were by far the better team on display as they completely dominated the proceedings at the Arena Birmingham.

A day after blanking Pakistan 5-0, India notched up another convincing win to go top of group A and qualify for the quarterfinals with one tie still remaining in the league stage of the competition. India made a strategic decision to split the mixed and men's doubles pairing as Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy were back together for the opening match.

The former world number 19 pair looked rusty initially before getting past Sachin Dias and Thilini Hendahewa 21-14 21-9 to put India 1-0 ahead.

World Championships bronze medallist Lakshya Sen, who is playing his first match after recovering from a shoulder injury, prevailed 21-18 21-5 over veteran Niluka Karunatne, who has competed at the Olympics in 2012, 2016 and 2020.

Akarshi Kashyap, who had made it to the team after topping the selection trials in April, went past Vidara Suhasni Vidanage 21-3 21-9 in the women's singles to hand India an unassailable 3-0 lead.

While the opening game was a walk in the park, Kashyap was briefly troubled by the Sri Lankan in the second game before she found her bearing to zoom ahead. One half of the mixed doubles pair, B Sumeeth Reddy then combined with Chirag Shetty to beat Dumindu Abeywickrama and Sachin Dias 21-10 21-13 to make it 4-0.

In the final match, Gayatri Gopichand and Tressa Jolly overcame stiff resistance from Thilini Hendahewa and Vidara Suhasni Vidanage in the opening game to come up trumps 21-18 21-6 and compete the formalities. Sen found the going tough in the opening game as Niluka brought all his experience into play and tried to engage his opponent in rallies.

The Indian, however, used his crisp half smashes, placement, precision of shots and better on-court movement to emerge victorious.

"I was expecting that. I've trained with him before, and played him in tournaments, so I know how he plays," the 20-year-old from Almora said after the match.

"I was rusty in the first game ? it was my first match in the hall and I was still getting used to the conditions but I got better in the second game. There is a slight drift which was not there in the practice sessions.

This is Srikanth's first loss against the 36-year-old Frenchman in their six meetings.

Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and rising star Lakshya Sen made quarterfinal exits in their respective singles events, ending India's challenge in the Indonesia Open Super Series 500 tournament here on Friday.

Sen was first to be eliminated as the 20-year-old went down fighting and forced a decider against his higher-seeded Chinese Taipei rival Chou Tien Chen 21-16 12-21 21-14. India's last hope then rested on Sindhu but the former world champion went down without a fight to her old foe Ratchanok Intanon 12-21, 10-21 in a match lasting a little over half an hour.

The 27-year-old was at her dominating best and looked at ease with both in attacks and defence and the Indian was never able to fightback and suffered her fifth straight loss against her Thai rival.

After pocketing the first game easily, Intanon looked even more furious in the second and raced to a 10-point lead before sealing the issue in 33 minutes to improve her head-to-head against Sindhu to 9-4.

Sindhu, who made a semifinal exit in the Thailand Open last month, had earned a hard-fought victory over Gregoria Mariska Tunjung to enter the quarterfinals.

Earlier, World Championships bronze medalist Sen bounced back from behind to level the second game but the third-seed from Chinese Taipei was superior in the decider with a 21-16 12-21 21-14 scoreline in his favour.

This was Sen's second straight defeat against Chou in less than a month. Sen lost to his Chinese Taipei rival 19-21 21-13 17-21 during the group stage of the Thomas Cup, before turning it around to script a historic triumph.

The 2018 Asian Games silver medallist, who had defeated the Indian in the group stage of the Thomas Cup in their only previous meeting, put up a power-packed show in the decider and mounted early pressure on the 20-year-old.

The world No. 4 from Chinese Taipei annexed three points in a row to build a six-point lead midway into the decider.

Sen was engaged in some superb rallies towards the end and even saved two match points but his valiant effort was not good enough as the experienced 32-year-old maintained his lead to make it a 2-0 in head-to-head against the Indian.

Lakshya Sen's proposal and PV Sindhu's special request cleared under TOPS

Indian men's badminton team scripted history in Bangkok, Thailand on Sunday (May 15) as they went on to lift their maiden Thomas Cup title after stunning 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0 in the final. It was a dominant performance from India in the all-important summit clash as they wrapped up the final winning three matches on the trot.

India won their first-ever Thomas Cup title in the 73-year-long history of the tournament. Lakshya Sen and Kidamb Srikanth won their respective singles matches while the doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won their doubles match to propel India to a historic triumph.

In an exclusive interaction with WION, Indian badminton great Pullela Gopichand labelled the historic win as the biggest ever in the history of Indian badminton. Gopichand, who is the last Indian to have won the prestigious All England Championships and is currently India's chief national badminton coach, said the only thing that could better the Indian men's team's Thomas Cup win was if both the men's and women's team won gold medals at the coveted tournament.

"Every time I think of the sport, I think this is the best it can happen and every time we have surpassed those expectations. But I think this is really one of the biggest ever wins," Gopichand told WION in an exclusive interview.

"The only that can probably beat it is if you can win both the men's and women's medals together. This is huge, this is as big as it gets in terms of team championships at the highest level," he added.

Gopichand, one of the most dedicated coaches in the Indian badminton circuit, is often credited to have nurtured the current crop of stars in Indian badminton. He has been running the Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad which has produced a number of top shuttlers including the likes of Srikanth and PV Sindhu among others.

A few years ago, it was a distant dream for Indian badminton to compete against the likes of Indonesia, Malaysia and Denmark, who are powerhouses in the sport. However, the Indian team defeated all three countries on their way to a historic win at the Thomas Cup 2022 this year.

Explaining the reason behind India's exceptional performance at the Thomas Cup this year, Gopichand said the senior players in the side had personal pride at stake and had a lot to prove to their critics. He also lauded the team members for complimenting each other well throughout their campaign.

"I think it's a combination of things. We can call it a team championship but still each one goes out there and, plays their own match, comes out and turns out it adds to the squad unlike hockey, football or cricket.

But I think what is important is that these players have peaked at the right time. They are playing their best badminton at the right time. Also, each one had their personal pride at stake, they were competing against each other but were also complementing each other," said Gopichand.

Gopichand also detailed how the likes of Srikanth and HS Prannoy have proved the naysayers wrong while calling the young Lakshya Sen the rising star of Indian badminton. Sen had gotten the better of Toy Olympics bronze medallist Anthony Ginting in the Thomas Cup final while Srikanth defeated Jonathan Christie in straight sets.

The doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag arguably had the toughest tie in the final as they were up against the talented and experienced duo of Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo. After losing the first game 21-18 against the Indonesia pair, Satwik and Chirag staged a comeback for the ages.

The Indian pair clinched the second game 23-21 before taking the final game 21-19. Gopichand said almost each of the senior players in the squad had headed into the tournament with a point to prove and they fought like a team to make history by winning the most coveted team tournament in world badminton.

"Lakshya has been a rising star. He has done exceptionally well in the last few months. He has been winning events after events and has been phenomenal. But Srikanth has had his ups and downs. He lost out on the Olympics and big medals when it mattered. He has been up and down with his form. People have also doubted Prannoy's presence in the team and I think he needed to prove a point," said Gopichand, who has had a huge role to play in the rise of Indian badminton in the last decade.

"The doubles players Satwik and Chirag probably wanted to prove a point as it has always been the case that singles players are good but doubles are not. Indian men's badminton team scripted history in Bangkok, Thailand on Sunday (May 15) as they went on to lift their maiden Thomas Cup title after stunning 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0 in the final.

Also Read: Exclusive! Don't think anyone had dreamt of India beating Indonesia 3-0 in Thomas Cup: Kidambi Srikanth Gopichand, one of the most dedicated coaches in the Indian badminton circuit, is often credited to have nurtured the current crop of stars in Indian badminton. Also Read: We created a WhatsApp group titled ‘We’ll Bring It Home': Kidambi Srikanth after India win Thomas Cup But I think what is important is that these players have peaked at the right time. Thomas Cup: 'Entire nation is elated' - PM Narendra Modi, Virat Kohli & others hail India's historic win

Indian men's badminton team created history as they thrashed Indonesia 3-0 on Sunday (May 15) to clinch their maiden Thomas Cup title. The experienced Kidambi Srikanth came up with a memorable performance against Jonatan Christie to stun him in straight sets in the third game to seal a dominant 3-0 win for India in the final of the Thomas Cup 2022.

While Srikanth and Laskhya Sen won their respective singles matches, the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won their doubles match to hand India a clinical 3-0 win in the final against Indonesia at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.

Lakshya was up against Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Anthony Ginting in the first game. He was absolutely outplayed by the Indonesian in the first game as Ginting won the first game 21-8 before Lakshya produced an incredible fightback to win the second game 21-17 to force the contest into a decider.

Lakshya brought out his best in the third and final game as he outclassed Ginting 21-16 to win his match and give India a 1-0 lead in the final. India's second game in the final was arguable the toughest of the lot as the doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag was up against Muhammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.

The Indian duo started the match on a terrific note, taking an early lead in the first game against the seasoned Indonesian pair. However, Ahasan and Sukamuljo soon displayed their class and managed to take the first game 18-21. Satwik and Chirag were dominated by the Indonesian pair once again in the second game.

Ahsan and Sukamuljo came close to clinching the second game in a row but Satwik and Chirag pulled off a comeback for the ages to take the game 23-21. They then went on to win the decisive third set 21-19 to record the most impressive win of their careers and extended India's lead to 2-0 in the final.

Srikanth locked horns with Christie in the third game of the final with the title on the line. The Indian had lost against the Indonesia the last time they came up against each other. However, Srikanth was on a roll in the final on Sunday as he wrapped up the first game of the second singles match 21-15 to put India on the verge of a historic win.

Sikanth was brilliant in the second game as well as he led Chrsitoe 11-8 at the interval. It was a hard-fought battle between the two shuttlers but Srikanth prevailed over the Indonesian as he won the second game 23-21 to beat Chrsitie and power India to their maiden Thomas Cup title in the 73-year-long history of the tournament.

No Indian team had previously managed to reach the final of the prestigious tournament. But the Indian men's team spearheaded by Srikanth and Lakshya scripted history in Bangkok this year.

The magnitude of the title victory can be adjudged from the fact that Indian badminton great and former national coach Pullela Gopichand had compared the men's team reaching Thomas Cup final to Kapil Dev-led India winning the country's maiden cricket World Cup crown in 1983.

Indian men's badminton team create history, clinch maiden Thomas Cup title after thrashing Indonesia

Indian shuttlers created history in Thomas Cup 2022 on Friday (May 13) as Team India defeated Denmark 3-2 in the semi-final to enter their maiden final. HS Panny defeated Rasmus Gamke in the deciding fifth and final game to power India into the final of the prestigious tournament.

It was a magnificent achievement by the shuttlers as India had never reached the final of the Thomas Cup in the tournament's 73-year-long history. India's best-ever campaign at the Thomas Cup came in the year 1979 when the Indian team featuring the likes of the legendary Prakash Padukone and Syed Modi had lost in the semi-final against Denmark

On Friday, India got off to a losing start in their semi-final against Denmark as Laskhya Sen went down against World no.1 Viktor Axelsen in straight sets. However, the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty got their first point by defeating their opponents in the next game.

Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy then registered victories in their respective matches as India won the semi-final 3-2 to storm into the summit clash. India's stunning win over Denmark sent the entire sporting fraternity buzzing as the historic achievement was hailed by one and all.

“Years ago we would wonder whether we are good to even qualify for the Thomas Cup. Even if we did, we would usually be eliminated in the group stage. I remember just how much of a struggle it was.” Gopichand was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

Gopichand, who is on the second Indian to have won the prestigious All England Open, said India reaching the final of the Thomas Cup was a significant moment in the history of Indian badminton. He also praised the doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag for providing much-needed depth to the Indian side, which it lacked before.

“This is such a significant moment. The Thomas Cup is the biggest tournament in team badminton. Making the finals means you stand eye to eye with the best nations in world badminton. The magnitude of an Indian team reaching the final is what I’d imagine the team that made the cricket World Cup finals back in 1983," said Gopichand.

“You can’t do what you did without a world-class doubles pair like Satwik and Chirag. That doubles option gives a depth to the side that we didn’t always have before,” he added.

Badminton Asia Championships: Saina Nehwal wins opening match, Lakshya Sen makes first-round exit

Focus will be on two-time Olympic medallist P V Sindhu and world championships bronze winner Lakshya Sen when they lead India's challenge at the Badminton Asia Championships, beginning here on Tuesday.

A lot of hope will ride on Sen and Sindhu as the duo has been in good form in the run-up to the continent championships, which is returning after a gap of two years due to COVID-19.

The prestigious event will, however, lose a bit of sheen with the withdrawal of an injured HS Prannoy, who had claimed bronze at the 2018 Wuhan edition and is in good form. While Prannoy will miss out due to a "small injury" sustained on way to his Swiss Open final finish, it will be a great opportunity for All England silver medallist Sen.

The 20-year-old from Almora has been on a stellar run with title wins at the India Open Super 500 and final appearance at the German Open and All England Championships.

Sen had also won a bronze at the 2020 Asia team Championships, besides bagging a gold and bronze at the 2018 and 2016 Asian Junior Championships.

The fifth-seeded Indian will be eager to win a medal from the senior tournament but it will be easier said than done as he faces 22-year-old China's Li Shi Feng, a two-time world junior championships gold medallist, in his opening round.

All eyes will also be on former world champion fourth seed Sindhu, who had scooped a bronze from the 2014 Gimcheon edition and is coming into the event after securing two Super 300 titles at Syed Modi International and Swiss Open.

The World No. 7 Indian will be eager to pocket another medal when she begins her campaign against Chinese Taipei's Pai Yu Po. Sindhu is likely to come across fifth-seeded Chinese He Bing Jiao in the quarterfinals if she can cross the initial rounds.

World Championships silver winner Kidambi Srikanth too has been in good touch though he has been guilty of not being able to close out some tight matches. The seventh-seeded Indian, who won two bronze in the 2016 and 2020 Asia Team Championships but failed to secure an individual medal, will aim to grab the opportunity this time when he opens against Malaysia's NG Tze Yong.

Tokyo Olympian B Sai Praneeth too will eye a good show when he opens against fourth-seeded Jonatan Christie.
Focus will also be on London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal as she looks to claim her fourth medal at the Badminton Asia Championships.

Saina has been on a comeback trial after recovering from some nagging injuries and had skipped the selection trials for the upcoming major events such as Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and Uber Cup.

The former world number one will look to silence her critics when she begins her campaign against Korea's Sim Yujin. Among others, Aakarshi Kashyap, who was picked for all the three major events after she emerged as winner in the trials, will face top seed Akane Yamaguchi, while Malvika Bansod, who missed out of a berth, will cross swords with Singapore's Yeo Jia Min.

World number 7 and third seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will open against Thailand's pair of Apiluk Gaterahong and Natchanon Tulamok.

MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila, who recently made it to the Asian Games and Thomas Cup teams after finishing on top at the selection trials in New Delhi, will also be in action. The unseeded Indian pair will be up against the fourth-seeded Indonesian combination of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto in its opening round.

Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala, who had reached the quarters at Odisha Open Super 100 and German Open Super 300 besides finishing runners-up at Syed Modi International Super 300, will look to give a good account of themselves.

In women's doubles, India will lack the punch following the withdrawal of N Sikki Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa, and Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand. While Sikki got injured during the recently-concluded selection trials in New Delhi, Treesa and Gayatri also pulled out at the last minute following an injury to the latter.

Ashwini Bhat K and Shikha Gautam, and young pairing of Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker will be in the fray in women's doubles for India. In the mixed doubles, Venkat Gaurav Prasad and Juhi Dewangan, and Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto will look to go deep in the draw.
