<p>One would think the year 2018 would end with a bang in cinema. The year saw some incredible cinema from smaller producers and gave rise to numerous new stars -who with their sheer talent and good cinema, carved their own space in Bollywood this year. When newere actors, directors are churning out such amazing content, expectations from superstars like Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan and a banner like Yash Raj Films would naturally double up. They have in the past- individually- delivered some fantastic cinema, so when these three prominent forces of Bollywood team- up for a film, one would expect nothing but the best. But 'Thugs Of Hindostan'- 2018's big Diwali release is utterly disappointing leaving the audience with a migraine in its 2 hours 44 minutes run time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Based on &nbsp;Philip Meadows Taylor's book 'Confession of Thug', the film merges a revenge saga with the fight for freedom from the British in late 18th century India. &nbsp;After the British murder her parents, a young Zafira(Fatima Sana Shaikh) is raised by her father's most trusted aid Khudabaksh Azaad( Big B). Zafira is a princess of sorts of a kingdom whose king has been murdered along with his kin by the British who now rule the kingdom. Zafira, since then has been on the run and trained by a thug/ pirate Khudabaksh who, with his army, often plunders, loots British ships and convoys ever so often. Naturally, Zahira, as Azaad's chief commander has been trained well in archery and sword fighting. Together as a team, they are unbeatable and a pain for the British. The Brits then hire Firangi (Aamir Khan channelising his inner Jack Sparrow in this one) to get them Azaad and his army. Firangi is a con man of sorts, who just works for money and doesn't really belong to any camp. Firangi does manage to infiltrate Azaad's den and even manages to win his trust even though Zafira isn't too convinced about the new member in their band.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now a film on pirates and their adventure ideally should be a thrilling ride. There is so much to look forward to such films. But director Vijay Krishna Acharya's film is far from it. A long drawn saga of seeking revenge with over the top background music, silly dialogues and a predictable story makes 'Thugs of Hindostan' an overbearing, torturous ride.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
Considering the fact that this is perhaps YRF's most expensive film till date, it is alarming to see so much money getting wasted on a film that struggles to stay afloat. It is long, the VFX is amateur, stunts are unrealistic(no one jumps, everyone does backflips instead) &nbsp;and the songs are forgettable. There is Katrina Kaif - in a role that seems so unnecessary- dancing in the most obscure outfits to the most impractical steps choreographed by none other than Prabhudeva. She wears a pair of silver shorts in one song, and a thigh-high slit ghagra in another- fashion trends that never existed in the 18th century - and does the twist in one song.&nbsp;<br />
Basically, her character Suraiya is ahead of her times considering her dance steps and costumes became a rage several hundred years later.&nbsp;</p>

Factually wrong, overstretched and a convoluted story which in the middle suddenly turns jingoistic- 'Thugs Of Hindostan' is a ship that sinks soon after it sets sail. It is a shame that YRF, one of the biggest producers in the country, pumped in money at the wrong things instead of investing in researchers and writers who could churn out something original and better. In a year where Bollywood has given us some really fantastic films, a 'Thugs Of Hindostan'- cushioned with big bucks, stars, grand sets- is just not acceptable.

Filmmaker Anand L Rai's latest film 'Zero' has Shah Rukh Khan playing a dwarf and one would expect the ace director and superstar to churn out a memorable film if not a pathbreaking one. But 'Zero' doesn't do any of those things. It, in fact, forces down your throat the most illogical story of all time.</p>

<p>'Zero' begins with much potential. Bauua Singh (SRK) may not have got the height, but has immense confidence which keeps him going. He has a difficult relationship with his family, is made fun of most often by everyone around him- but he takes it in his stride. He laughs the most at himself and loves himself the most. A self-centered guy, Bauua is unapologetic about his nature and his obsession towards the idea of love. When he is sent on a date with &nbsp;Aafiya (Anushka Sharma) a space scientist with cerebral palsy, he is most upset about the fact that she doesn't bother to look at him despite his little frame and cocky behaviour. As he woos Aafiya, his agenda is clear- he just wants her to fall for him. But for Aafiya, it is love as she finally finds someone speaking to her at her level. She is a person with special needs, is wheelchair bound- yet she is treated normally and not with sympathy by Bauua Singh.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As Afiya lands in Meerut to meet Bauua's family and they in turn hastily fix the two's wedding, Bauua discovers that Babita Kumari (Katrina Kaif), the big Bollywood star, is in town and heads over to meet her. A chance encounter at&nbsp;night on a deserted highway, a kiss from the superstar and a ticket to a dance reality show in Mumbai makes Bauua walk out on Aafiya on their wedding day.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the first half is breezy enough, with SRK in his elements, charming the audience and Aafiya with his wit, comic timing and <em>Meeruthiya</em> swag it's the long second half, where Bauua lives in Mumbai and realises the world of glamour is far from perfect that the film starts to become illogical- to put it mildly. Mind you, his charm is effervescent SRK style, not really Bauua's own. It is almost an extension of the actor himself, which always does manage to impress us.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Written by Himanshu Sharma- who has in the past written 'Tanu Weds Manu'- the film over-indulges and literally spills out on screen as SRK's personal wishlist. Here is a superstar, who after ruling the box office for decades, has played myriad roles in his career. What has he not played before? A dwarf! But instead of talking about disabilities and being a tad sensitive towards who are born with physical deformities, the film makes Bauua a miracle man. He romances, emotes, dances like all the characters that SRK has played before in his career. Apart from the height, there is really not too much difference between Raj of DDLJ and Bauua of 'Zero'. Both are brash, irritating and self-centered and they both realise their inner feelings the hard way.&nbsp;</p>

It is also tough to understand that a man with no proper profession finds cash in abundance to splurge on himself, his friend and the women he loves. Then, of course, there is a long-drawn space mission that takes over the latter part of the second half and SRK even casually slips in a patriotic line or two.</p>

<p>Among the ladies, it is Katrina Kaif who shines the most. The actress delivers her career's best performance as the dissuaded star Babita Kumari. There is a certain nonchalance to her stardom and she is a conflicted personality and Kaif shines in a role that could be an extension of many actors in real life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Anushka's tries. Aafiya is a woman who is a genius but with disabilities. It isn't an easy role by any standards and Anushka gets it right to an extent but tends to ham a bit in certain portions. Had the writing been more coherent, Anushka would have delivered a far more convincing performance.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The film has several cameos. Because it's a big budget film, SRK, who is also the producer of the film, gets some prominent names to play walk-away parts. Abhay Deol, R Madhavan play the other halves to the leading ladies who instead pine for Bauua. There is also the late Sridevi along with Rani Mukerji, Aalia Bhatt, Juhi Chawla, Kajol, Deepika Padukone and Karisma Kapoor who appear in an absolutely unnecessary scene which is well cringe-worthy. Salman Khan's song also seems hurriedly put together just to show off the two actors' camaraderie.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Somewhere after the interval, a scene in 'Bharat' has its leading man Salman Khan walking the streets of Malta with friend and confidante Vilayti (Sunil Grover) and wondering about his journey so far. A bit overwhelmed by the view, Bharat reminisces about the years have gone by and says, 'So much I have seen, sometimes I feel I am living a dream,' as his friend nods in agreement. The line perhaps sums up how director Ali Abbas Zafar, who also serves as the writer of the film, weaves an exhaustive story keeping in mind the nation's sentiments but not so much logic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>An official adaptation of South Korean film 'Ode To My Father', Zafar narrates the story a principled, do-gooder Bharat, who along with his family has had to shift to Delhi and take refuge at his aunt's house during partition. While boarding the train from Attari at the time of independence, his father had asked Bharat to take his mother and siblings to Delhi and wait at Hind Store, owned by his aunt as the patriarch of the family ran off to look for his lost daughter. His parting words to the young Bharat was that he would meet the family at the store in a few days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Days turn into months and then to years- as Bharat and his family wait for their father and sister to return but no avail. Meanwhile, a newly independent India slowly comes to term with its freedom and the responsibilities that come with it. Bharat grows up doing odd jobs along with his best friend Valayti till they decide the join the Russian circus where Bharat is a motorcyclist performing daredevil stunts. Things are hunky dory until one day an accident forces Bharat to re-assess his career choice and eventually leave the circus to join a more stable job. Valayti and Bharat then join the oil field- part of the Indian envoy there where he meets officer Kumud (Katrina Kaif) a strong headed, no-nonsense girl and the two fall in love.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zafar tries to narrate parallelly the highlights of each decade with references to unemployment in the 60s, to the discovery of oil in the Arab states, to India winning the world cup in 83, to even rise of SRK and liberalisation in the early 90s. Each decade had its challenges and triumphs much like Bharat's personal life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mounted on a grand scale, Zafar tries to incorporate the look and feel of each decade pretty well and while the adaptation Indianises a few of its plot points, the premise of the film remains the same as that of the original where Bharat bound by duties and the promise that he had made to his father, sacrifices own happiness to make his family live a good life. But while the emotional quotient of the story is high, the film also has obscure scenes which completely play to the gallery.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Of course, any Salman Khan movies will have its usual trappings as the star overrides the script, as in some scenes, Bharat breaks into monologues about desh, desh bhakti and nationalism arbitrarily. Like a scene where Bharat breaks into a long monologue about earning in dollars to improve the country's economy and then even sings the national anthem in front of an employment officer or the scene where he tries to compare Africa and India (continent and country) as both poor nations and then breaks into a dance to impress the pirates on board a ship he works in. Such scenes are of course written to bring in the needed lump in the throat, make one feel proud of the country etc- and they completely play to the gallery.&nbsp;</p>

The film redeems itself purely on that basis- on how it captures these sentiments.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Salman Khan, of course, remains the star and lines, scenes are written keeping in mind his persona. But it is Katrina Kaif and Sunil Grover who perform and ably support the narrative. Over the past year, Katrina Kaif has clearly come into her own and now holds her own in big budget films. She shined in 'Zero' and in 'Bharat'too she is a revelation- making Kumud a joy to watch. She is strong willed, ahead of her times and Kaif plays the character perfectly. Grover, who has created a niche in comedy on TV, gets a meaty role as the faithful best friend and doesn't disappoint.&nbsp;</p>

The story of the film revolves around the life of three childhood friends -- Arjun (Hrithik), Kabir (Abhay) and Imraan (Farhan) -- who revives their good old days by planning an adventurous trip before the marriage of Kabir.&nbsp;</p>

Ali Abbas Zafar's latest 'Bharat' revolves around a family that gets separated during partition. In fact, the partition segment is an important part of the film, which showcases Bharat`s (Salman`s character in the film) life in different avatars spanning over a period of over 60 years, starting from 1964 to 2010.</p>

<p>The film's lead pair, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif recently met up with few families that were affected during partition. The duo held a special screening which was followed by an interaction.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Katrina Kaif expressed her views on her past relationships when she appeared on 'BFFs with Vogue - Season 3' hosted by Anaita Shroff Adajania.</p>

<p>The actress said that there was a phase in her life when she was consumed by something else instead of work, and she has no regrets about it.</p>

<p>"There has been a major shift in a way that I have started approaching my work and characters. <p>Katrina says she is at a point in her career where she is drawn to challenging roles rather than the styling or glamour aspect of cinema.&nbsp;"To grow as an actor and further myself in my career, I have to learn and experiment more and try out different roles. I have to pick up roles that challenge me. The idea is to work with directors who will bring out these aspects of me that I would like to see on the screen," Katrina told PTI in an interview.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The actor is now gearing up for the release of 'Bharat', a role that was earlier slated to be done by Priyanka Chopra but came her way after the 'Quantico'&nbsp;star pulled out of the project ahead of her wedding.</p>

<p>Katrina believes she was destined to do 'Bharat', a period drama that reunites her with frequent collaborators Salman Khan and director Ali Abbas Zafar.&nbsp;"It came to me out of the blue. I was on the treadmill and the call came and I told Ali, 'are you joking?' Because they were leaving in a few days to shoot the film.&nbsp;Ali said, 'there is a little bit of change for some reason'. He sent me the script and I loved it. It was something that I wanted to take as a challenge. I felt there was a lot for me to do in the film. It was a fantastic experience."</p>

<p>Asked about reuniting with Salman and then Akshay Kumar in 'Sooryavanshi', Katrina said it is merely a coincidence.</p>

<p>"From what I am offered, I choose the best one. (It is) not on the basis of who is the actor in the film or whether it has Akshay or Salman. These are just the coincidences. In this industry, you end up working together for years. I read every script. It is just coincidence that these films have appealed to me.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>"For me, the joy comes from my work, from the characters that I am playing than this (co-stars). (But) It is good to be working in a friendly environment and there is a sense of trust."</p>

<p>Katrina said Ali initially had a concern about the UP dialect that her character Kumud Raina speaks. So she worked with a dialect coach to capture the nuance.&nbsp;The actor believes it is important to feel satisfied with the choices one makes.</p>

<p>"I take my work seriously. I want to enjoy every film and role that I take up. I have never wavered from my choices. I am clear about my reasons to do a film. With time, you change as a person and what you get drawn to also changes. I am at peace with my choices.</p>
