School in Kashmir Valley opened on Wednesday after a gap of 32 months. Children were seen donning school uniforms and rushing for classes early in the morning. The happiness on their faces was apparent.

The schools were shut after the abrogation of Article 370 on 5th August 2019 and later due to the Covid pandemic. Students were reunited with their friends and teachers after a long gap.

"I am extremely happy and excited that the schools have finally opened again. We missed it so much. The online classes were not as good as offline classes. I am so happy to be back in our classrooms. Meeting my friends and teachers after months is a feeling I can't explain," said Aayat, a student.

The government of Jammu and Kashmir has made it mandatory for all students to follow Covid protocols. Masks are important in the school premises and thermal scanners have been put at the school gates. Sanitisers have been provided in every classroom and other facilities. There would be a health team in every school monitoring the health of students, teachers, and administrative staff.

"Everyone is happy to be back in school. The students, teachers, and parents are so excited for the opening of schools. You can see for yourself how happy these children look today. The schools were completely sanitised before the opening, and we are taking care of all Covid protocols. Today during the assembly, we explained to all the students about what to do and how to maintain social distance, wearing masks, and using sanitisers," said Sumaiya, A teacher.

Moreover, the students at colleges and universities have been asked to carry their vaccination certificates with them. The long closure of institutions in Kashmir Valley has badly affected education. Parents and teachers are expecting situation to improve.

To revive the centuries-old handmade arts and crafts of India's Kashmir Valley, the department of handicrafts and handloom has started craft safaris in Srinagar city.

The government expects that these safaris will help grow the business of the craftsmen as well as the buyers can directly buy from the artisans with a guarantee of authenticity.

The step has been taken after UNESCO listed Srinagar among the creative cities of the world. The craft safari included visiting artisans of crafts like paper mache, woodcarving, pottery, silverware, copperware, namdhaKari, pashmina and silk carpets.

"After listing Srinagar as the creative city, we want to highlight certain products and it's very important to highlight certain crafts. The idea behind this is that in an area of 2 kms you can visit the workplaces of these artisans; you are able to see 5-6 crafts," said Mehmood Shah, who is the Director Handloom and Handicrafts in Kashmir.

"We have got a very good response and the aim is to connect the artisan with the customer and show them the hard work that is put by these artisans into these products. I am happy we are getting great responses for these safaris. We have designed these tours and they are in the public domain to reach out to those people who are interested in the crafts," Shah added.

The artisans of the Kashmir valley appreciate the steps taken by the government. A lot of machine-made craft was being sold as handmade, and steps like these will make sure to put an end to it.

The hard work that an artisan puts in making these artefacts can be witnessed during these safaris. And now the buyers from across the country or world can visit and buy authentic original products from the artisans itself.

''Artisans always want to be appreciated and we are thankful that this step has been taken by the handicraft department and Director Mehmood Shah. Meeting the artisans, seeing their hard work and making buyers buy the original products is a unique experience," said Sajjad Ali, who is an artisan.

"The middlemen sometimes really created confusion regarding handmade and machine-made products. It's a great confidence building step. The products are appreciated all over the world and this will boost it further," Ali added.

"For me it takes the artisans to buyers straight away and we have seen in the past also, it's the 4-5th edition and after these the artisans are getting direct calls and orders from the buyers. In South Kashmir's Anantnag district, a famous water stream called Brengi is vanishing into a sinkhole that formed a few days ago.

Brengi is known for its brown trout species, and with the formation of the sinkhole, all the water in the stream is vanishing, leaving the stream dry.

The sinkhole and the drying of the stream have created havoc for aquatic life. Many fish could be seen dead on the dry riverbed.

So far, the government has not been able to find a solution to the problem.

The government says they have managed to divert some water from the stream to other tributaries, but they will only take a final call on the sinkhole once the research teams submit their reports.

Three teams from Kashmir University, NIT, and the Geology Department have visited the spot to prepare a report, after which the government will decide on how to fill the sinkhole.

"The water has been diverted through a channel. We don't want to make a hasty decision to fill the sinkhole without proper advice from the three teams that are working on it. We are working on a comprehensive report so that a conclusive way is found. A final report by all three teams will determine our plan of action. This area is not new to sinkhole phenomena. We have also brought in the Fisheries department to shift aquatic life to nearby streams, "said Piyush Singla, DC Anantnag.

In an order issued today, the government warned journalists not to get too close to the sinkhole.

The order said that "It has been observed that despite restrictions being imposed on any assembly of the public or movement of individuals near the sinkhole at Wandevalgam, a number of media personnel continue to move close to and into the sinkhole, posing a threat to their own lives. This in turn attracts the public near the sinkhole, which increases the threat to life and makes crowd control difficult for the administration. Hence, all media personnel are hereby advised and warned not to violate the restrictions imposed around sinkhole."

While the teams are working together to develop a strategy to fill the sinkhole, the government says that it's not the first time that a sinkhole has formed in the area.

"The main reason for this is the topography of the area. It is called limestone cast topography. This happened 27 years ago as well. The region is prone to sinkholes, and we are sure it will happen in the future as well. We are talking to experts and finalising a report, after which a decision on filling the sinkhole will be taken, "said Syed Muiz Qadri, Tehsildar, Kokernag.

The final conclusive report by the three scientific teams working on it will be submitted on February 18.

All signs point towards this becoming a big issue in India which, for KFC, is a major market. Netizens are wondering why the fast-food chain decided to put up a controversial, politically charged post in the first place. Some of those commenting on the initial Facebook post were predicting, perhaps with some degree of accuracy, that this unnecessary post is bound to hit the brand in India.

Indian government for decades has clearly and repeatedly said that Jammu and Kashmir is an indivisible part of the country. Pakistani establishment has chosen to wage wars with India over Kashmir which resulted in their defeat every time. But why established brands like KFC and Hyundai are foraying in political waters is yet to be known. February 5 is marked as so-called "Kashmir Solidarity Day" in Pakistan.

After the recent controversy, Hyundai had to beat a hasty retreat and had to issue a clarification saying that company had "zero-tolerance policy towards insensitive communication" and that they "strongly condemn any such view".

A social media firestorm has erupted following a tweet from a Hyundai Pakistan dealer declaring support with Pakistan's Kashmir agenda.
