The Kashmir Willow bats have finally arrived in the international cricketing world. For the first time in the last 75 years, two international cricket players used the Kashmir willow bats in the T-20 world cup, which was held in Dubai.
This development has changed the fate of Kashmir's Willow bat industry.

The demand for Kashmir Willow bats has increased and orders are pouring in from across the World. Bat importers from around 12 cricket playing nations have placed orders with several bat factories in Kashmir.

The Kashmir bat industry was established in the year 1947 after India got its independence. Since then, millions of bats were made in the valley, but none were used by international cricket players.

''These players using the Kashmir willow bats on the biggest and best platform like the world cup is important for us. There couldn't have been a better stage than the world cup to present our product and our brand in the international market. This is the biggest achievement for the Kashmir cricket bat manufacture association. I had worked a lot since 2014 and visited all cricket playing nations and told the players we have an alternative to English willow which is cheaper. They did not go for it in the beginning, but after the Kashmir Willow bat was used in the world cup, the same people approached us and have given orders for these bats," said Fuwzal Kabir, Willow bat factory owner, Anantnag.

The orders for Kashmir willow bats are pouring from multiple countries. The factory owners say they are working day and night to manufacture as many bats as possible. The demand is more than what is being produced in the Kashmir market.

''Around 11-12 countries have given us orders which includes New Zealand, South Africa, UAE, Qatar, Denmark, New Zealand, Scotland and more. This is a new morning for all of us. For the last 75 years we have been manufacturing cricket bats here and we have more than 400 bat factories. And none of us was able to send our product to the international market. We are the only ones who can produce these bats at such a rate which is much less than what English willow costs,'' said Fuwzal.

The government of India recently gave Kashmir bat industry GI Tagging. It put the industry on the international market with quality control and made a brand out of it.

The bat factory owners have approached the government of Jammu and Kashmir saying the willows are being cut at a fast pace which can eventually turn into an issue for the bat factory owners and employees. They have asked the government for the re-plantation of the willow trees across the valley, especially in south Kashmir.

''The GI tagging will help, it will help people to know that it comes from Kashmir. We will get recognition and it will send across the message that the bat can be used on any platform. The trees are being cut at a fast rate, and no one is going for replantation of the trees. The government has to help us with the replantation otherwise we won't have willow trees available in the next 5-7 years. We have approached the Governor regarding the issue, and they assured us of a replantation drive. Otherwise, this will render all of us jobless in future," said Fuwzal.

To compete in the international market, the bat factory owners have hired experts from different parts of the country to make bats.

Those experts who have made bats for cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar and Virendra Sehwag are in Kashmir and helping make the best Kashmir willow bats.

''Kashmir willow is a good quality wood; we need someone to make the best of it. We must sift through it for the best quality. and for that What you require is a maker,'' said Ravi Tiger, a bat making expert.

For further promotions of their brands, the factory owners are approaching Indian cricket team players asking them to promote and use Kashmir Willow bats. They are hopeful that Indian cricketers will be using these bats in future.

A Turkey-linked UK-based law firm, Stoke White, has filed cases against top Indian officials, accusing them of "war crimes against Kashmiri Muslims."

The firm, in a release, stated that it has put up a "legal appeal" against the Indian Army chief and Home Minister to London’s Metropolitan Police following an investigative report on "war crimes in Jammu and Kashmir."

Hakan Camuz, chief of the firm, said, "Kashmiri Muslims have only international law to turn to after decades of seeking justice in their own country and only being subjected to further violence for doing so. This means Stoke White must begin the process of justice on their behalf, in a country that we understand respects the rule of law."

Camuz has in the past served as head of Turkey's Independent Industrialists and Businessmen Association (MÜSİAD) and served his home country's interests in several ways. There hasn't been any official reaction from Delhi over the development, but it is being seen as "the usual, motivated case deserving no response," said one official when asked.

The 41-page investigative report by the firm on its website, on which the case has been based, claims to provide "evidence of the presence of Israeli intelligence operatives during interrogations and torture of Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir".

The report terms UN listed terror groups like Jaish-E-Mohammad (JeM) and others like US and EU sanctioned Hizb-ul-Mujahideen as "non-state armed groups" and calls for the UK's universal jurisdiction on "war crimes under the Geneva convention" to be invoked against Indian officials and Indian govt functionaries.

JeM was responsible for the deadly 2019 Pulwama terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir in which over 41 Indian security personnel died.

In the past, the firm has filed similar cases against UAE officials for being involved in war crimes in Yemen. Turkey-UAE ties, much like Turkey's ties with India, have deteriorated in the last few years. The firm had filed the case, invoking the similar "universal jurisdiction" rule.

Interestingly, the firm also lists on its website the "best route to Turkish citizenship" and ways it "can connect to the right people to ensure that your investment abroad is a safe one." The firm has an office in Turkey as well.

"We keep on adding new designs to these to make customers happy. We make millions of these Christmas items. We are so happy to make these things. We send these items across the world. Not only to the West but to the Middle East too. It's also about people gifting these items to each other. And I think the demand has increased manifolds in the last few years. With Christmas around the corner, Santa has already arrived with a gift for the Christian community living in Srinagar. A 125-year-old church called St Lukes was shut for the last 30 years and in a dilapidated condition. The church after three decades will again reverberate with Christmas carols and prayers.

The Christian community living in the valley are excited and happy that the church has been restored. St Lukes Church was established in the year 1896 by two Christian men called Arthur and Ernest Neve. And the church is a great example of the composite culture of the Kashmir Valley which dates back centuries.

"The government asked us everything they should be doing. It was only done after consultations with us. We are all very happy and it's like a dream come true. And not only for Christians but I think the locals who live around the area are happy that the church will have prayers again. The church was established in 1896 and it shows the history of Christianity in Kashmir. A lot of people don't know that Christians live in Kashmir but they are also surprised. With this, the message of brotherhood is sent across. There would be service over there on Christmas. We will have carol service and prayer there," said Reverend Eric in Srinagar.

Under the smart city project, the St Lukes church has been brought back to its original glory. The Jammu and Kashmir government took the initiative to restore the church on the auspicious occasion of Christmas and threw the church open to the public. It took hundreds of artisans and labourers to restore this heritage site. With Gothic architecture, the Interiors of the church are unique as they have an amalgamation of Kashmir's craftsmanship like Khatamband Ceiling with the Gothic Walls.

"It's a 125-year-old church, it was established in 1896 by two people named Arthur and Ernest Neve. It's a beautiful structure of gothic architecture. It's slightly different from the usual architecture we have in Kashmir. The inside interiors of the church have a Khatamband ceiling which is unique to Kashmir. It was in dilapidated condition and there were structural issues. The main structural issues have been restored. Its external facade has been restored. It has a three-floor bell tower which has also been restored. Besides that, we have used the local craftsmen to redo the place. I am happy that under the smart city project we have managed to restore this. We have done it with consultations with the local Christian community. The structure of this place is unique and it definitely will be one of the new landmarks to visit in Srinagar city," said Athar Amin, Commissioner SMC.

The government also plans to keep this heritage church a must-go place for the visitors coming to Kashmir Valley. The Government has plans to restore all heritage structures in the Kashmir Valley to boost tourism.
