US Election 2020: Kamala Harris becomes 1st woman Vice President

Biden's victory is a loss for the man known as the "Tropical Trump," Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, whose fervent endorsement of the Republican incumbent leaves him isolated abroad and vulnerable at home, analysts say.

As congratulations from world leaders for Biden poured in Saturday, Bolsonaro's silence spoke volumes.

Elected in 2018 and up for reelection himself in 2022, Bolsonaro modeled his political rise on Trump's, and openly admires him.

Known for their shared knack for social media rants and riling up their conservative bases, he and Trump are two of the most visible faces of the new brand of right-wing populist politics that surged onto the world scene four years ago.

Bolsonaro, a 65-year-old former army captain, has actively promoted the comparison.

He has sought to cultivate a close relationship with Trump, to the point of breaking with Brazilian diplomatic tradition and openly endorsing the Republican billionaire's reelection bid.

True to the confrontational style he and Trump share, Bolsonaro also clashed with Biden during the presidential race.

When Biden said during his first debate with Trump that the United States needed to push Brazil to better protect the Amazon rainforest, Bolsonaro called the statement "disastrous."

"What a shame, Mr John Biden!" he said, mistaking the former vice president's first name in the English version of his tweet.

All that could make for an awkward relationship with the Biden administration.

Biden is particularly concerned with the fight against global warming, a touchy subject for Bolsonaro, a climate change skeptic who has presided over a surge in deforestation and wildfires in the Amazon.

Trump's loss also leaves Bolsonaro -- now arguably the most visible face of the new right worldwide -- more exposed to international criticism and pressure.

"Trump's loss weakens Bolsonaro. It makes him look more isolated," said Brian Winter, vice president of the Americas Society/Council of the Americas.

"It means more negative attention on Bolsonaro, who will suddenly become the face of a certain brand of right wing politics. It will call more attention to his actions in the Amazon.

"In a nutshell, there's a chance that Bolsonaro becomes the world's bogeyman for a certain portion of global opinion."

And while Bolsonaro may not care what Biden or the rest of the world think of his administration, there are key players in Brazil that do.

"To a lot of Brazilian companies, (the risk) is very clear. If Brazil becomes a pariah... that's bad for business, in a country that cannot afford to be losing clients, given where the economy is," Winter told AFP, referring to forecasts that coronavirus-battered Brazil faces a record recession this year.

- 'Can't help himself' -

Bolsonaro proudly claims to have brought Brazil's relations with the United States, its second-biggest trading partner after China, closer than any time in recent history.

So why risk a rocky relationship with the next US president?

"There's not a lot of strategy there. It's more like he can't help himself. He feels the need to demonstrate this constant support for Trump," said Cristina Pecequilo, a professor of international relations at the Federal University of Sao Paulo.

"It's about the personal dynamic between Bolsonaro and Trump" -- though Bolsonaro's Trump fandom sometimes looks unreciprocated, she added.

Bolsonaro will likely have to seek a relationship of pragmatic cordiality with the Biden administration, said Paulo Sotero of the Brazil Institute at the Wilson Center in Washington.

"It will take a lot of work to establish dialogue," he said.

"He should clearly move fast to change some key personnel," notably controversial Environment Minister Ricardo Salles, he added.

The Biden administration will for its part have an interest in keeping Brazil as a partner, on issues ranging from the environment to Venezuela to China.

And although the hashtag #BolsonaroIsNext was trending on Twitter in Brazil after Trump's loss, it would be a mistake to underestimate Bolsonaro's strength at home.

His poll numbers are strong. And having emulated Trump's rise, he no longer needs the "air of legitimacy" the US president gave him, said Winter.

"One of the lessons likely to come out of 2020 is that just because Trump lost, that brand of politics is not going to go away," he said.

Is Biden win a loss for Brazil's 'Tropical Trump'?

Media outlets around the world welcomed the victory of Joe Biden over Donald Trump, and hailed the efforts the now president-elect has put in to make his campaign successful.

The international press also warned Biden faced enormous challenges in healing the United States, and focussed on the feat of Kamala Harris, who will become the United States' first female black vice president.

The front page of The New York Times read 'Biden beats Trump' in bold. The newspaper hailed Biden as 'A President-Elect Shaped by Tragedy and Tradition'.

It said, "Joe Biden has spent his career devoted to institutions and relationships. And those are the tools he will rely on to govern a fractured nation."

"A new dawn for America," read the headline of The Independent in Britain, showing a photo of Biden standing next to Harris and noting her historic achievement.

The Sunday Times went with a picture of a celebrating black woman draped in the US flag and the headline: "Sleepy Joe wakes up America", taunting Trump by using the derogatory nickname he had used for Biden.

The Sunday People tabloid blared in capital letters: "GOD BLESS AMERICA."

Germany's mass-market Bild newspaper carried a photo of Trump with a headline: "Exit without dignity".

"What a liberation, what a relief," reported Germany's left-leaning Suddeutsche Zeitung broadsheet.

But it noted that Biden "inherits a heavy burden" like nothing faced by his predecessors, and warned that Trump accepting defeat was "unthinkable".

In Australia, the Daily Telegraph tabloid owned by Rupert Murdoch's media empire also focused on Trump's expected defiance and described him as a "hotball of fury".

"(Trump) will simply not accept the humiliation of seemingly being beaten by a foe he perceived to be feeble and barely worth turning up to fight," it said.

Brazil's leading media outlets reported Trump's defeat in the context of its own populist leader, Jair Bolsonaro, who has similarly sought to diminish democratic institutions and reject science-based facts.

"Trump's defeat punishes the attacks against civilisation, it is a lesson for Bolsonaro," wrote Folha de Sao Paulo, one of Brazil's major daily newspapers.

"May Brazil's leaders seize the spirit of the times -- or die, like Trump, who has already left it too late."

Spain's centre-right El Mundo newspaper said Biden's was a goodbye to Trump's populism, and described Harris as a "symbol of renewal".

Sweden's biggest daily, Dagens Nyheter, headlined its opinion-editorial piece: "Bittersweet victory -- Biden will struggle to heal the US".

It described Biden's vow of a return to normalcy as "mission impossible".

"The election result shows a deeply divided country, and it will be difficult for Biden to carry out the reform programme he has promised his core voters," the paper wrote.

Sweden's conservative Svenska Dagbladet daily warned of the dangers posed by the many millions of Americans who will continue to believe Trump's dangerous rhetoric that the election had been stolen from him.

"Election is over -- but conflict continues," read its headline.

"Half the country -- half of those who voted at least -- may have a lingering feeling that something is very wrong after months of battles and voices calling the election itself into question. That the election system itself is rigged and can't be trusted."

The Ayrshire Daily News, whose patch covers the Trump Turnberry golf course in Scotland, took a more local look at the result.

"South Ayrshire golf club owner loses 2020 presidential election," read its headline.

US Election 2020: World leaders congratulate Joe Biden & Kamala Harris on victory

A day after Joe Biden was declared victorious in US Election 2020, sitting US President Donald Trump continued to level allegations that US Election 2020 was 'stolen' from him. The president went on yet another tweet spree on Sunday evening (Indian time) and renewed allegations of fraud in recently concluded US Presidential Election 2020.

Quoting Newt Gingrich, his colleague in Republican Party, Donald Trump made the following tweets.

“We believe these people are thieves. The big city machines are corrupt. This was a stolen election. Best pollster in Britain wrote this morning that this clearly was a stolen election, that it’s impossible to imagine that Biden outran Obama in some of these states....Where it mattered, they stole what they had to steal"

“We should look at the votes. We’re just beginning the tabulation stage. We should look at these allegations. We’re seeing a number of affidavits that there has been voter fraud. We have a history in this country of election problems. In Pennsylvania you had an order by a...Supreme Court Justice to compel them to separate ballots that were received after the legislative deadline. It required the intervention of Justice Alito. That’s a large group of ballots. When you talk about systemic problems, it’s about.......how these ballots were authenticated, because if there’s a problem in the system about authentication, that would seriously affect the ENTIRE ELECTION - And what concerns me is that we had over a hundred million mail-in ballot in cites like Philladelphia......and Detroit with a long series of election problems (to put it mildly).” read this series of tweets.

'Party in the USA': Celebrities react to Joe Biden-Kamala Harris' victory

Democrat Joe Biden's first address as the US president-elect was interspersed with cheers from a socially distanced crowd, and well, a lot of firsts.

Biden mentioned 'disability', 'systemic racism', and 'science' in his national address winning the hearts of many across the US and the world.

“We must make the promise of the country real for everybody — no matter their race, their ethnicity, their faith, their identity, or their disability,” the president-elect said.

What followed on the social media was a deluge of appreciation posts for America's new president.

"I'm crying watching Biden's speech, & I'm not even a Biden fan. He said disability. He said the word. He included us in his call for a better future. I burst into tears. I've never seen a President or Prime Minister include disability in their speeches. #CripTheVote #Disability" a Twitter user wrote.

Activists remark on the significance of Biden mentioning 'disability' in his address

US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris declared her victory was just a beginning for women as she was elected to be the top-ranking female leader in US history.

Harris said voters had brought a "new day for America" as she opened a victory speech on Saturday with President-elect Joe Biden.

Harris was all praise for Biden, as she introduced the president-elect at a victory rally in Delaware.

"What a testament it is to Joe's character that he has the audacity to break one of the most substantial barriers that exists in our country, and select a woman as his vice president. But while I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last. Because every little girl, watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.

"And to the children of our country, regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message: Dream with ambition, lead with conviction and see yourselves in a way that others may not simply because they've never seen it before, but know that we will applaud you every step of the way."

Democrat Joe Biden's first address as the United States president-elect had goosebumps written all over it.

Biden was visibly upbeat as he addressed the socially distanced crowd, racing to the podium after an introduction by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris to the sounds of Bruce Springsteen's "We Take Care of Our Own."

"This is the time to heal in America," an ebullient Biden told supporters at an outdoor rally in his home city of Wilmington, Delaware.

"Folks, the people of this nation have spoken. They've delivered us a clear victory, a convincing victory," he added.

But he did not discount the contribution of Donald Trump and his supporters for last four years. And the November 3 vote.

He said he understood disappointment, because he too had lost. But now, “Let’s give each other a chance,” he said on Saturday (US time).

Acknowledging the disappointment of Trump supporters, Biden said of them: "They are not our enemies. They are Americans."

"Let this era of demonisation in America begin to end here."

"I sought this office to restore the soul of America, to rebuild the backbone of this nation, the middle class, and to make America respected around the world again," Biden said.

"I pledge to be a President who seeks not to divide but unify -- who doesn't see Red states and Blue states, only sees the United States," he added.

Emphasising a message of unity, Biden said Democrats and Republicans can decide to work together.

“If we can decide not to cooperate, then we can decide to cooperate. And I believe this is part of the mandate of the American people, they call on us to cooperate," he said.

Biden hailed the diverse coalition of Americans who came together to elect him president.

“I’m proud of the coalition we put together the broadest and most diverse coalition in history. Democrats, Republicans independents progressives moderates conservatives young old urban, suburban, rural, gay, straight, transgender, white, Latino, Asian, Native Americans. I mean it," he said.

Biden noted he couldn’t have got to where he is without the votes of Black Americans.

“Especially at those moments when this campaign was at its lowest ebb,” he said, “the African American community stood up again for me.”

In key swing states including Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Georgia, Black voters were crucial to Democrats’ victory.

Biden vows to unite America in first address as US president-elect

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Saturday that it was too soon to congratulate Joe Biden and he would wait for "all legal issues" in the US presidential election to be resolved.

"We don't want to be imprudent. We don't want to act lightly and we want to respect people's self-determination and rights," Lopez Obrador told reporters.

"We have a very good relationship with the two candidates," he added.

"President Trump has been very respectful with us and we have reached very good agreements, and we thank him because he has not interfered and has respected us," said the left-wing populist.

And "the same" goes for Biden, Lopez Obrador added.

Trump has launched a slew of legal challenges and refused to concede after the major US television networks announced Biden's win.

Meanwhile, flag-waving migrants on the Mexican-US border on Saturday welcomed Joe Biden's presidential election win and voiced hope that Donald Trump's defeat would bring greater respect for human rights.

With Biden in the White House, the migrants expressed optimism that "families (who enter the United States illegally) will no longer be separated and children will no longer be caged" in US immigration facilities.

Trump sparked anger during his 2016 election campaign when he branded Mexican migrants "rapists" and drug dealers, and vowed to build a wall across the southern US border. But Lopez Obrador has managed to maintain cordial relations with Trump and even visited him in July on his first foreign trip since taking office.

Trump's "zero tolerance" policy launched in 2018 saw thousands of children separated from their parents at the frontier, a tactic apparently meant to frighten the families, before the government backed down.

Surrounded by migrants from Haiti and Central America and US flags, Banda took up a symbolic position near the border crossing where thousands of US citizens or legal residents pass each day.

Biden supporters waved the Stars and Stripes and some motorists honked their horns in celebration.

Migrants living in the city's shelters learned about the election results by television or through their cell phones, largely isolated from the outside world due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Under an agreement between Mexico and the United States in January 2019, asylum seekers must wait in Mexico for their applications to be processed in the United States.

During his first year of presidency, Joe Biden plans to bring together the democracies of the world by hosting a global Summit for Democracy to "renew the spirit and shared purpose" of the nations of the Free World, according to a policy paper issued by his campaign during the US presidential election.

India, being the world's largest democracy, is likely to play an important role in such a summit.

Biden defeated incumbent President Donald Trump in the bitterly-fought presidential election that attracted a record number of Americans to cast their votes.

"During his first year in office, President Biden will bring together the world''s democracies to strengthen our democratic institutions, honestly confront the challenge of nations that are backsliding, and forge a common agenda to address threats to our common values," according to the policy document issued by his campaign.

"President Biden will organise and host a global Summit for Democracy to renew the spirit and shared purpose of the nations of the Free World," it said.

The Summit will prioritise results by galvanising significant new country commitments in three areas: (1) fighting corruption; (2) defending against authoritarianism, including election security; (3) advancing human rights in their own nations and abroad, it said.

The proposed Summit will include civil society organisations from around the world that stand on the frontlines in defense of our democracies. Details of the summit would be worked after early next year, it said.

It will also issue a Call to Action for the private sector, including technology corporations and social media giants, to make their own commitments, recognising their responsibilities and their overwhelming interest in preserving open, democratic societies and protecting free speech, the Biden Campaign said.

"For example, technology companies-which benefit from the fruits of democracy- should make concrete pledges for how they can ensure their algorithms and platforms are not empowering the surveillance state, facilitating repression in China and elsewhere, spreading hate, spurring people to violence, and remaining susceptible to misuse," said the policy document.

As an example of the concrete action our world needs, Joe Biden served as a founding member of a Trans-Atlantic Commission on Election Integrity-to fight back against Russia's attacks on Western democracies, the policy document pointed out.

The Commission asked politicians across Europe to sign a pledge committing to transparency in campaign finance and to reject the use of fabricated or hacked material.

"Now that he is a candidate for office, Biden has signed that pledge and is calling on every person running for president to do the same," it said.

Before hosting the global summit for Democracy, the Biden Administration plans to take a host of steps to strengthen democracy in the country.

Prominent among them include reforming the criminal justice system to eliminate inequitable disparities; restore the Voting Rights Act; and seek greater transparency in the campaign finance system so money, foreign and domestic, won't pollute politics.

The Biden administration also plans to immediately end the horrific practice of separating families at the border and holding immigrant children in for-profit prisons.

"Abandoning our deepest-held values does nothing to increase security at our border-and everything to diminish our standing in the world. At the same time, as president, Biden will establish sensible policies that improve screening procedures at our legal ports of entry and make smart investments in border technology, in cooperation with Canada and Mexico," it said.

"Terminate the travel ban against people from Muslim-majority countries. Reverse Trump's detrimental asylum policies and raise our target for refugee admissions to a level commensurate with our responsibility and unprecedented global need," the policy document said.

The Biden Administration also plans to restore a commitment to science and truth in government, including bringing back the words "climate change"; and return the phrase "nation of immigrants" to the mission statement of its Citizenship and Immigration Services.

"Revitalise our national commitment to advancing human rights and democracy around the world," said the policy document.

Joe Biden plans to host a global summit for democracy in the first year of presidency

Kamala Harris made history on Saturday with her election as Joe Biden's vice president, becoming the first woman, first Black American and first Asian American to win the second highest US office.

Edison Research and the major US television networks on Saturday projected their victory, based on unofficial final results, even though the incumbent president, Republican Donald Trump, vowed to continue fighting in courts.

A US senator from California, Harris has a track record of shattering glass ceilings. She served as San Francisco’s first female district attorney and was California's first woman of colour to be elected attorney general.

Harris, whose mother and father emigrated from India and Jamaica, respectively, had her sights set on becoming the first woman US president when she competed against Biden and others for their party's 2020 nomination.

Biden looked beyond some of the harsh words Harris had for him in that campaign to name her his running mate in August. She has proven to be a valuable and polished stand-in, appealing especially to women, progressives and voters of colour, all critical to the party’s election hopes.

Kamala Harris' aunt Dr Sarala Gopalan has only wonderful things to say about her.

"She has always been a nice and caring child. She was fond of everybody. I am very happy and thrilled that she has scripted history. We all are very happy," she told WION, in an exclusive conversation, on Sunday.

Harris has always been vocal about the kind of impact her mother's upbringing had had on her. Dr Gopalan too sees the same streak of rebellion she saw in her sister, Shyamala.

"My sister was a rebel. At the age of 18, she applied for a scholarship at Berkeley [University] without telling anyone. It was only after she got a full paid scholarship that she told our parents. She was a strict mother; she taught Kamala values. She taught her to fight for everything. I see the same streak of rebellion in Kamala. Shyamala would have been very happy to see Kamala rise to this position. Unfortunately, she died very young," she said, adding, "I was in California when Kamala had decided to contest for the post of DA. I knew then she wanted to get somewhere. She then became an attorney general, then a senator, and now this [vice president-elect]."

Harris has shown herself to be a team player, taking on a lower-profile role and holding virtual and in-person political events that sometimes drew little news coverage, while often speaking in terms of what Biden would do for the country if elected and making an impassioned case against Trump.

Kamala is a diamond, her aunt told WION.

"When she became a senator, I went to her and told her she was a diamond in the family. And she said to me, 'Chitti, I am not a diamond in the family. I am a diamond among diamonds,'" Dr Gopalan said.

Kamala Harris' maternal grandfather also had a major impact on how she perceived ambition.

"My father was a wonderful man. In 1958, he could send his 18-year-old daughter to America -- which no South Indian father would think of doing," Dr Gopalan told WION.

Asked on "60 Minutes" last month why, given Biden's age, he believed Harris would be ready to step into the presidency if something happened to him, the presidential candidate rapidly fired off five reasons.

"Number one, her values. Number two, she is smart as a devil, and number three, she has a backbone like a ramrod. Number four, she is really principled. And number five, she has had significant experience in the largest state in the Union in running the justice department that’s only second in size to the United States Justice Department. And obviously, I hope that never becomes a question," he said.

Harris is widely seen as an obvious candidate for the Democratic Party nomination in 2024 should Biden, who will be 78 at their inauguration on January 20, decide not to seek a second term.

She has proven to be a valuable and polished stand-in, appealing especially to women, progressives and voters of colour, all critical to the party’s election hopes. 'Very happy and thrilled that she has scripted history': Kamala Harris' aunt tells WION

Joe Biden calls for unity among the Americans in his first speech since becoming the President-elect of the United States. Biden has said that his priority is to tackle Coronavirus pandemic.

Joe Biden: Our battle against the virus, racism | US Election 2020

Joe Biden's election as US president has sparked a scramble for champagne in the capital Washington, while other big cities in the country erupted into celebrations that saw no end at least until midnight.

From New York to Miami in the East and Denver and Austin out West, Biden supporters flooded into the streets after media networks projected him as the winner.

Some stores in Washington were already close to running out of stock in the Democratic stronghold. Calvert and Woodley, known for its selection of wines from around the world, sold up to 75 percent more bottles than a usual Saturday, according to store employees.

Hundreds of bottles had been sold.

A few customers were dressed in Biden-Harris t-shirts and with a Biden-Harris sign on the hand.

At Magruder's, a wine shop in the residential district of Chevy Chase in business since 1845, the shelves were emptied quickly and employees had to fetch reserve cases of champagne.

And they were obviously not concerned with the price. Bottles of champagne typically sell for around $40 dollars (33 euros) to start.

The packed crowd outside the White House later sung "YMCA," the song Trump used to close out his rallies down the homestretch of the campaign.

Trump, however, was not at the White House on Saturday morning -- he was at his golfing at his club in Virginia .

In Philadelphia, which was key to Biden's decisive Pennsylvania win, cars honked, people waved Biden flags and a large crowd gathered outside of Philadelphia's City Hall.

In New York City, a crowd gathered outside of the Trump International Hotel and Tower, chanting: "No More Trump!" In Chicago, growing crowd gathered to celebrate outside Trump Tower.

A crowd also gathered at Freedom Park in Atlanta.

Outside Biden's headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, the crowd quickly grew. There were people of all ages cheering, singing and honking their horns, and the crowd joined together to sing "God Bless America."

US cities erupt into celebrations, scramble for champagne after Biden win

People have not historically hustled to spontaneous outdoor dance parties for Joe Biden.

They have not clanged spoons against frying pans in celebration for him, formed triumphant honk-parades along Fifth Avenue for him, made Champagne toasts with strangers in his honor through chants and tears.

“BIDEN!” his supporters shouted outside Manhattan’s Washington Square Park on Saturday, the call echoing from apartment windows and taxis and sidewalk restaurant tables. “JOE BIDEN!”

Joe Biden. That Joe Biden — institutionalist 70-something, incorrigible square, inexhaustible reciter of Irish poetry.

But then, it seems that defeating President Donald Trump can do strange things for a man’s reputation.

In Biden’s first hours as president-elect Saturday, many voters who have appraised him through the decades as a particular kind of capital veteran — prone to perpetual windiness, requests for a “point of personal privilege” in casual conversation and digressions about dead senators — appeared ready to greet him as a sort of conquering hero.

“Winners write history,” said Amanda Litman, a former aide to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign and the executive director of Run for Something, a group encouraging Democrats to seek local office. “I think he definitely gets bonus points for doing what no one thought was possible, even when we hoped it was.”

Litman said she had spent the day walking miles across Brooklyn, sobbing in the street and encountering an intersection dance-a-thon, set to “Shout” by the Isley Brothers, that felt airlifted from a wedding reception.

Biden, of course, has not generally been Washington’s leading purveyor of cool. That will not necessarily change over the long term. It is likely that gushing Democratic affection would have awaited anyone who managed to beat Trump.

And yet, this is the person who did it.

If the last two commanders in chief have been phenomenon candidates who became phenomenon presidents, Biden would appear to be ending the trend, comfortable instead with the identity that helped elect him: the man to rein things in a bit, to lower the collective volume before the neighbors complain.

This is someone who does not drink, who does not smoke, who once scolded friends at his own bachelor party for growing too rowdy.

During the campaign, Biden’s team strained to create a mini-cult of personality around him, bragging on his signature accessory (aviators), his signature vice (ice cream), his interest in muscle cars.

“Ridin’ With Biden,” went one slogan that kinda-sorta caught on.

While most of the impromptu gatherings this weekend came in places unaccustomed to Biden-associated revelry — with rollicking bashes from Los Angeles to Washington to most any city in between, cheering Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris — there was at least one ZIP code for which the embrace was more culmination than novelty.

On Saturday, hundreds of cars jammed into a parking lot outside an events center in Wilmington, Delaware, ferrying in Biden’s friends and fans from the state he represented for 36 years in the Senate for a somewhat socially distanced drive-in rally. They sat on the roofs of their vehicles and played cornhole as they waited. They lugged around oversize American flags and kibitzed in lawn chairs and balanced Champagne flutes on top of their cars. They were proud, they said, of their state’s most famous resident.

In his speech, Biden was quintessentially himself. After jogging onstage to a chorus of car honks, he began with a nod to the fine people of Delaware (“the people who brought me to the dance!”) and then decided to name a few, shouting out assorted local dignitaries like a city council candidate.

He quoted relatives and welcomed Harris and her husband to the Biden family, “like it or not.”

He tried to empathize with Trump voters, noting that he had “lost a couple times myself” in his political day. He acknowledged the present national gravity. He projected humility. He smiled a little.

It had been a long campaign — three, actually, for the presidency alone in his lifetime. He looked out on guests who had seen him lose as often as they’d seen him win.

This time around, the mood was purely festive — so much so that Maureen Whilby had decided to celebrate her 55th birthday on-site, where the fireworks and confetti blasts might as well have been for her, too.

“Best birthday in the world!” she said, several hours before the sky would light up with the words “Biden” and “president elect.” “Never forget this birthday. Unity. Bring us back together. No division.”

Nearby, a cluster of Delawareans stood together wearing T-shirts indicating their past lives as Iowa volunteers for Biden, a reminder of the dark, icy days he spent in a state that rejected him in his 2008 run and did so again in 2020.

“We were a little nervous at that point,” admitted Patti McKelvey, 53, a Pilates and yoga teacher from Wilmington. “But we were still 100% backing Joe.”

State Rep. Krista Griffith — “I’m Joe Biden’s state representative,” she noted — also made the trek to Iowa. This, she suggested, was more fun.

“We all know him,” she said Saturday. “We just can’t wait for the rest of the country to experience that.”
