Some economic projections predict a recession in the United States is effectively certain in the next 12 months and this comes as a blow to President Joe Biden's economic messaging ahead of the mid-November midterms.

Fitch: Inflation and fed hikes to drive US economy into recession

Former Democratic party leader Tulsi Gabbard drew parallels between US President Joe Biden and German authoritarian Adolf Hitler during a campaign trail for the November mid-term elections in Manchester.

Speaking at a Bolduc town hall event on Sunday, the former Hawaii congresswoman and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate reportedly said that she is “pretty sure” both Biden and Hitler share a “mindset” for justifying authoritarian behaviour, The Daily Beast reported citing audio clip of the event.

“I'm pretty sure they all believe they’re doing what’s best,” Gabbard said.

“Even Hitler thought he was doing what was best for Germany, right? For the German race. In his own mind, he found a way to justify the means to meet his end. So when we have people with that mindset, well, you know we’ve got to do whatever it takes because, as President Biden said in that speech in Philadelphia, that those who supported Trump, those who didn't vote for him are extremists and a threat to our democracy.”

Gabbard was referring to Biden’s Philadelphia speech from September when he spoke of anti-democratic extremism among “Donald Trump and the Republicans.”

In that speech, Biden said that when people voted for Trump "they weren't voting for attacking the Capitol. They weren't voting for overruling the election. They were voting for a philosophy he put forward."

The 41-year-old Indian-origin former lawmaker quit the Democratic Party a few days ago, calling it an “elitist cabal of warmongers”.

In the 30-minute video, she lambasted Biden, saying, “President Biden campaigned on a message of unity, healing the partisan divide bringing the country together. He just gave a big speech saying supporters of President (Donald) Trump are the most extremist group in our country and a threat to our democracy. That’s half the country,” she said.

She had also said that Biden’s foreign policy was at fault as it allowed Russia's military invasion of Ukraine.

Zelensky orders troops to capture 'more' Russian prisoners to facilitate release of Ukrainian 'heroes'

In a bid to tame the rising gasoline prices, the United States is reportedly planning to release 14 million barrels of oil from its strategic reserves, Reuters reported quoting sources.

The decision to divest part of its oil reserves comes ahead of the November midterm elections, as Biden’s Democratic Party is expected to face a tough fight from the rival Republicans.

Reuters reported citing people familiar with the matter that President Joe Biden is expected to make an announcement this week.

Notably, this is the second time that the Biden administration has decided to release oils from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve of 180 million barrels. In May, the president released 14 million barrels of oil.

"The administration has a small window ahead of midterms to try to lower fuel prices, or at least demonstrate that they are trying," one source told Reuters.

"The White House did not like $4 a gallon gas, and it has signalled that it will take action to prevent that again," the source added.

The West’s sanctions on Russian gas have been driving up oil prices across the world. In US, the price of gas rose to $5 a gallon in the aftermath of the sanctions but it has been trending lower as of late.

According to data from AAA Gas Prices website, the price of oil dropped to $3.87 per gallon on Tuesday and is expected to remain under $4 in the upcoming days.

Last week, Biden admitted that the gasoline prices have been trending on the higher side, and added that he was in talks to lower the costs this week.

His deputy energy secretary, David Turk, indicated about tapping into Strategic Petroleum Reserve last week, saying that the decision would be taken in coming weeks and months as necessary to stabilise oil.

In a bid to tame the rising gasoline prices, the United States is reportedly planning to release 14 million barrels of oil from its strategic reserves, Reuters reported quoting sources.

With US-Saudi at loggerheads over OPEC+ oil cut, King Salman says 'working to support stability of markets'

US First Lady Jill Biden was reportedly greeted with loud jeers from the spectators while she was attending the National Football League final at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

According to Fox News, prior to the match between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, Jill was booed by the fans when she stepped on the field and stood alongside cancer survivors when the “Fly Eagles Fly” rendition was being played out on Sunday.

She was there at the event to promote the White House’s Cancer Moonshot initiative. She was joined on the field by cancer patients and survivors as well as their families.

There is no video to show that Jill was getting booed, as the song that was being played at the time was so loud that it made it difficult to differentiate the noise. But many on social media were quick to point out the incident.

Iran slams Joe Biden's 'interference' in anti-hijab protests, says US trying to inflame unrest

US President Joe Biden on Friday (October 14) reiterated his support for Iran protests and said he stands with the protesting citizens. The ongoing mass protests are the biggest wave of demonstrations in Iran in years.

Protesters are going on over the custodial death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was detained by Iran's morality police for 'improper' attire, last month.

"I want you to know that we stand with the citizens, the brave women of Iran," Biden said at a college in Irvine, California, addressing a group of protesters who had gathered holding "Free Iran" signs.

"It stunned me what it awakened in Iran. It awakened something that I don't think will be quieted for a long, long time," said Biden.

Mahsa Amini passed away on September 16. According to Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights, more than 100 people have been killed since.

The unrest has continued despite what Amnesty International called an "unrelenting brutal crackdown" that included an "all-out attack on child protesters" -- leading to the death of at least 23 minors.

Biden spoke briefly about the Iran protests ahead of a speech on lowering costs for American families in Irvine, near Los Angeles, which has a large Persian community.

"Women all over the world are being persecuted in various ways, but they should be able to wear in God's name what they want to wear," said Biden.

He added that Iran "has to end the violence against its own citizens simply exercising their fundamental rights".

"I want to thank you all for speaking out," he told the local Persian community.

The Biden administration has proposed to bring in a new law to classify thousands of independent workers as regular employees—a move that could shake up the ride-hailing and delivery companies, and other app-based industries who primarily rely on gig workers.

Under the proposed law, which has been unveiled by the U.S. Labour Department on Tuesday, these gig workers would be treated on par with the regular employees and would be entitled to a minimum wage, overtime, and contributions to unemployment insurance.

The new proposal would work on the principle of “totality-of-the circumstances” to analyse all of the factors involved in the working relationship equally.

The department has said that it will use multi-factor economic realities, such as job permanency, how much control workers have over their work and how many opportunities they are given to increase their earnings, among other factors, for determining the working relationship between the employer and gig workers.

“While independent contractors have an important role in our economy, we have seen in many cases that employers misclassify their employees as independent contractors,” labour secretary Martin J. Walsh said in a statement.

“Misclassification deprives workers of their federal labour protections, including their right to be paid their full, legally earned wages.”

Recently, Uber and Lyft have claimed in federal filings that they would be forced to alter their business models if they start treating their drivers as employees, according to the New York Times.

They stated that labour costs would rise 20 to 30 per cent if gig workers are given all the benefits of a regular employee.

The proposal will be published in the Federal Register on October 13 and the public will have 45 days to comment on it.

“They’re concerned about whether or not I can get anything done. Look what I’ve gotten done. Name me a president in recent history that’s gotten as much done as I have in the first two years. Not a joke. You may not like what I got done, but the vast majority of the American people do like what I got done,” he told CNN.
