The US and Russia have decided to resume talks related to the New START nuclear arms reduction deal, which was put on hold since before Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

New START, or Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, was signed between the United States and Russia. Its formal name is Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms. It is the only surviving weapons control pact between the two biggest nuclear powers in the world.

The bilateral consultative committee (BCC), the mechanism for its implementation, will meet "in the near future," said Ned Price, spokesperson for the US State Department, on Tuesday.

Exit polls show most voters don’t want Joe Biden to run for US presidency in 2024

The Republican Party went into the United States midterm elections full of confidence and with the dream of controlling both branches of the Congress – House and Senate. With President Joe Biden’s popularity going down and the country going through one of the worst inflations in recent times, it looked like an easy path for them, but the results have been less than satisfactory till now.

When it comes to the House, the Republicans were projected to cross the necessary 218-mark, but the lead was far less than predicted. Without a comfortable cushion of at least 10 seats, the Republicans will once again be forced to look for bipartisan support on certain key promises.

The story is even worse when it comes to the Senate race as the battle seemed for a close finish with Democratic candidate John Fetterman pulling off a sensational win over Dr Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania. The loss means that once again, the Senate can be headed for a 50-50 split and that means that the Vice President Kamala Harris will continue to tilt the scale in the Democrats’ favour.

The defeat of Dr Oz was also a signal of a bigger concern – the performance of the candidates handpicked by former President Donald Trump. The scene was not much different in Arizona where Kari Lake, a vocal denier of the 2020 election results, seemed all set to lose to Katie Hobbs in the governor’s race while in Michigan, Trump-endorsed Republican Tudor Dixon faced a similar fate.

The other Trump-backed candidate in Arizona – Blake Masters – was also trailing in the Senate race and while JD Vance successfully defeated Democratic candidate Tim Ryan in a much-publicised senate race in Ohio, the numbers are not looking good to justify Trump’s endorsements.

With the Republican Party not performing as well as the projections, a dark shadow has currently settled over Trump’s expected presidential campaign announcement. With a slim lead in the House and a potential loss in the Senate, the Republican Party has placed themselves in a tricky situation and with Trump’s endorsements under the scanner, the Democrats will have a lot to take from the polls.

White House vows 'unwavering' and 'unflinching' support for Ukraine, even if Republicans win midterm elections

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan recently held a confidential meeting with Yuri Ushakov, a foreign-policy adviser to Vladimir Putin, to dissuade Kremlin from intensifying the conflict with Ukraine, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported citing two unnamed US officials.

The meeting between the two top officials comes in the wake of reports that Russia is ramping up its nuclear arsenal to be used in the Ukrainian war.

According to the US media outlet, Sullivan has also been in contact with his Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev, the officials said, adding that the aim of the engagement was to keep communications channels open, and not to discuss a settlement of the Ukrainian war.

The newspaper reported that US officials did not provide the dates or the number of calls.

Responding to the reports about Sullivan’s confidential meetings, National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said, “People claim a lot of things” and declined to comment further.

Amid nuclear war fears, US NSA Sullivan met Russian officials: Report

Ukrainians are preparing for the worst-case scenario and making emergency plans to leave town or stay with friends or family, as the nation braces for fresh Russian attacks on its infrastructure.

On Sunday, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky in his nightly address said that around 4.5 million consumers were already without power and that "the terrorist state" is focusing resources and efforts "for a possible repetition of mass attacks on our infrastructure."

This comes as Iran on Saturday, in a first acknowledged that it had supplied Moscow with the drones that the nation has been using to attack its neighbours' power stations and civilian infrastructure. However, the nation clarified that the supply was delivered before the war.

A day after US President Biden said coal plants are too expensive to operate and that his government was "going to be shutting these plants down all across America", he has received stiff resistance from his own partyman and influential West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin. Reportedly, Manchin said the statement made by President Biden was not only outrageous, "and divorced from reality but also ignores the severe economic pain the American people are feeling because of rising energy costs.” Manchin, the democrat who has close ties to the coal industry and is one of the prominent voices in the blue camp, continued the attack and said the people of America were losing trust in Biden. “Comments like these are the reason the American people are losing trust in President Biden and instead believe he does not understand the need to have an all in energy policy that would keep our nation totally energy independent and secure," said Manchin. "It seems his positions change depending on the audience and the politics of the day. Politicising our nation’s energy policies would only bring higher prices and more pain for the American people." Read more: 'We're going to shut all coal plants in America, replace with wind and solar power,' says Biden The Democrat leader added that his government was going to focus on wind and solar energy which will be using the same infrastructure set up as the one used for the coal-fired electricity transmission. And all they're doing is, it’s going to save them a hell of a lot of money and using the same transmission line that they transmitted the coal-fired electric on, we're going to be shutting these plants down all across America and having wind and solar power." Notably, this is not the first time that Biden has come down on the coal industry. The Democrat leader added that his government was going to focus on wind and solar energy which will be using the same infrastructure set up as the one used for the coal-fired electricity transmission.

"So it's going to become a wind generation. And all they're doing is it’s going to save them a hell of a lot of money and using the same transmission line that they transmitted the coal-fired electric on, we're going to be shutting these plants down all across America and having wind and solar power."

Notably, this is not the first time that Biden has come down on the coal industry. In the lead-up to the US Presidential race, Biden had said that coal miners should learn to code.

“Anybody who can go down 300 to 3,000 feet in a mine can sure as hell learn to program as well…Give me a break! Anybody who can throw coal into a furnace can learn how to program, for god’s sake!”

With the midterm elections just three days away, the Republicans may attempt to drum up Biden's statement. The Republican National Committee has already remarked that Biden is celebrating coal workers losing their jobs. The hits are only likely to increase in the coming days.

US President Joe Biden on Friday said his government was going to shut down all coal plants across America. Reportedly, Biden gave the rather bold call in his speech at an event in California while addressing a gathering. President Biden said that coal plants are too expensive to operate, and hence "we're going to be shutting these plants down all across America" in order to shift to wind power. "I was in Massachusetts about a month ago on the site of the largest old coal plant in America. Guess what? It cost them too much money. They can't count. No one is building new coal plants because they can’t rely on it. Even if they have all the coal guaranteed for the rest of the existence of the plant," said Biden.
