The man who attacked US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer has been charged with attempted murder among other felonies, a day after break-in at their home in San Francisco.

Police have so far not revealed the motive of Friday’s attack, even though the incident has stoked fear of political violence ahead of the midterm elections on November 8, which will decide the control of the House of Representatives and Senate.

The accused was identified as David Depape, 42— a self-described nudist activist in the Bay Area, and proponent of far-right conspiracy theories.

Depape, who is in police custody, has been booked on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, battery, burglary, and several other felonies.

On Friday, San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said that police detectives, assisted by FBI agents, are yet to determine what caused the home invasion but added, "We know this was not a random act” and that it was targeted and "wrong."

"The suspect pulled the hammer away from Mr Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it," San Francisco police chief Bill Scott told reporters. He later added that Paul Pelosi was hit at least once.

According to reports, the intruder shouted, "Where is Nancy?" before attacking Paul Pelosi.

Nancy was in Washington, DC, at the time of the attack. After being informed of the intrusion, she rushed to the San Francisco hospital where Paul, 82, "underwent successful surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands," according to Nancy's office. He is expected to make a full recovery.

In a Twitter post, Nancy said that she and her family were "heartbroken and traumatised" by the violent attack.

"Our children, our grandchildren and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack on our Pop," Pelosi said of the incident in a letter posted to Twitter Saturday evening.

"We are grateful for the quick response of law enforcement and emergency services, and for the life-saving medical care he is receiving," she said, in her first comment about the attack.

The Biden administration is reportedly planning to delay military aid to Saudi Arabia to punish the Gulf country for leading OPEC’s decision to cut oil production going against the request.

According to NBC, which has quoted two US officials, the administration might delay shipments of advanced Patriot MIM-104E guided ballistic missiles, among other arms and ammunition to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi has Patriot launch systems and needs missiles to defend against the Houthi rebels in Yemen. It had inked a deal with the US to purchase 300 missiles from it.

While some military officials have supported the retributive move, there are others who want to keep the oil production cuts a separate issue, said NBC report citing sources.

Apart from that, the other methods that might be employed by the US to punish the Saudi regime include excluding them from any upcoming military exercises and engagements like regional meetings or conferences, the officials said.

Though nothing has been decided yet, the Biden administration might drop the idea if the Saudis increase the production in the upcoming December OPEC meeting, the officials added.

The ties between the US and Saudi soured after the Gulf nation, apart from Russia, influenced the OPEC group to cut oil production by two million barrels a day, contrary to the requests by Joe Biden.

The move incensed the White House which has been struggling to control inflation and reduce gas prices, which have been at new highs since the Russia-Ukraine war broke out in February this year.

Earlier this month, Biden while speaking to CNN said, "There's going to be some consequences for what they've done with Russia."

The eight-month-old Russia-Ukraine war raised concerns that a nuclear weapon could be deployed that would lead to massive destruction. In the past couple of months, the issue has been raised by world leaders, who are urging Moscow and Kyiv to end the conflict peacefully.

In a recent report, US-based media outlet POLITICO cited United States diplomatic cable and two people familiar with the issue who said that the nation is apparently speeding up its plan to store a more accurate version of its mainstay nuclear weapons at NATO bases in Europe.

The United States, Japan and South Korea warned Wednesday that a North Korean nuclear test would warrant an "unprecedentedly strong response". They also promised unity after a blitz of missile launches by North Korea.

US President Joe Biden issued a strong warning to Russia on Tuesday, stating that unleashing a nuclear weapon in the conflict with Ukraine would be a horrible mistake on its part.

As reporters questioned Biden about his belief that Russia is planning a "dirty bomb" attack that it would later attribute to Ukraine, he responded, "Russia would be making an incredibly serious mistake were it to use a tactical nuclear weapon."

Russia has frequently cautioned Ukraine not to use a "dirty bomb" on its own soil.

The US and its allies fear that Russia may launch a "false flag" strike using a dirty bomb in order to justify the use of conventional nuclear weapons as Moscow finds itself in a precarious position in eastern and southern Ukraine.

United States President Joe Biden congratulated Rishi Sunak for becoming the prime minister of the United Kingdom, describing his ascension to the top post as a “ground-breaking milestone”.

Biden’s remarks came during a White House event on Monday to mark the Indian festival Diwali.

"We've got news that Rishi Sunak is now the prime minister. He's expected to become the prime minister I think tomorrow when he goes to see the King. Pretty astounding. A ground-breaking milestone and it matters," Biden said.

Later, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that Biden has plans to call Sunak to "offer his congratulations".

Forty-two-year-old Sunak will become the first person of colour to helm the prime minister post in the UK’s history. He is also the third British premiere this year after Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, who resigned last week after just 44 days in office.

On Monday, Penny Mordaunt dropped out of the race, paving the way for Sunak to become the first non-white and Indian-origin PM of the country.

The former chancellor had secured the backing of over half the 357 Tory MPs – way above the 100 minimum required to make the shortlist.

Sir Graham Brady, chair of the influential 1922 Committee of backbench MPs, announced in the Parliament complex that he had received only one nomination and therefore Sunak is the winner of the Conservative leadership contest.

Sunak is expected to take office on Tuesday after being formally appointed by King Charles III.

Outgoing PM Truss will be chairing her final cabinet meeting at 9 am (local time) and then will make a statement outside No 10 before travelling to Buckingham Palace for her final audience with the King.

After this, Sunak will visit the monarch, who will ask the former to form the government.

He will then travel to Downing Street to make a statement at about 11.35 am, before entering his official residence, 10 Downing Street.

Days after launching the application portal for student-loan forgiveness, the Biden administration has been dealt a blow. Reportedly, a US appeals court on Friday issued a stay on the plan, temporarily blocking the federal government from cancelling any loans. "We encourage eligible borrowers to join the nearly 22 million Americans whose information the Department of Education already has," said Jean-Pierre. "It is important to note that the order does not reverse the trial court's dismissal of the case or suggest that the case has merit," she added. "It merely prevents debt from being discharged until the (appeals) court makes a decision." Unveiled in August, the programme will provide a $10,000 relief for borrowers with salaries less than $125,000. For recipients of Pell Grants, the relief doubles to $20,000. President Joe Biden is not ruling himself out of the race of giving another crack at the president's post. Biden said while he has not made a final decision just yet, it is his 'intention' to run again and that his wife thinks that he shouldn't walk away from it. “My wife thinks that we’re doing something very important, and I shouldn’t walk away from it,” said Biden, referring to the first lady and his wife Jill Biden. The US president made the statement in an interview at the Delaware State University in Dover. Biden added that he has time to make the decision. “The reason I’m not making a judgment about formally running or not running, once I make that judgment, a whole series of regulations kick in and I have to be – I treat myself as a candidate from that moment on. I have not made that formal decision, but it’s my intention – my intention to run again. And we have time to make that decision,” said Biden. If the Republicans, the current heavy favourites to win the House of Representatives manage to do so, the Democrats will have a difficult time passing important bills. Then, there is the age factor as well, At 79, Biden is already the oldest US president in history. By the next time, he will be well into his 80s. However, when quizzed about what his late son Beau would have said to detractors saying his dad is too old for the President's job, Biden said: “It’s not so much [what] he’d say to those people. What he’d say to me in my view. The only reason to be involved in public life is can you make life better for other people. And depending on who the opponent is, if they have a view that is such the antithesis of what I believe democracy and I believe is good for average Americans, then his argument was, dad, you have an obligation to do something.” If Biden does put his hand up for the presidential race, he might be up against Donald Trump yet again as the Republican has repeatedly flirted with the idea of a comeback. While Biden mulls the decision, a Harvard University poll conducted earlier this year showed that 71 per cent of Americans do not want Biden to run for re-election.
