Some lawmakers in the US Congress want to cut military aid for war-ravaged Ukraine and want to extend it to Taiwan which is at a risk of military aggression from China. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press on Sunday (Oct 8), Republican Mike Collins voted against providing military aid to Ukraine and advocated for doing more to arm Taiwan. Collins and other Republican lawmakers have pointed out that China is watching closely to see if the US has the political stamina to support an ally (in this case Taiwan) in a prolonged, costly war. The report said that Washington's aid to Ukraine led to weapons manufacturers stepping up production — something that could benefit Taiwan in a clash with China. Ukraine's victory existential for Taiwan: Taipei Taiwan has been careful not to weigh in on the US debate about continued funding for Ukraine. On being asked about Congress removing Ukraine funding from temporary spending measures which prevented a US government shutdown, Taiwan said it was grateful to have strong bipartisan support from Washington. "We will continue to work with the US to maintain the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait,” the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office told the Associated Press. Also read: Biden pondering a massive 'one-and-done' Ukraine aid package, says report Taiwan has been the thorniest issue in the US-China relationship. China claims sovereignty over the island and vows to seize it by force if necessary to achieve natural reunification. The US, however, wants a peaceful resolution and has a security pact with the island, supplying it with military hardware and technologies to prevent any forced takeover by China. US President Joe Biden has said that he would send troops to defend Taiwan in case of a war. On the other hand, his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping has demanded that Washington respects Beijing's “sovereignty and territorial integrity.” China extends probe into Taiwan's trade barriers Meanwhile, China on Monday extended by three months an investigation into what it calls Taiwan's trade barriers against it. The investigation was first announced in April, but it has now been extended to January 12, a day before Taiwan's presidential and parliamentary elections. Reacting to the extension, Taipei said that Beijing's so-called "trade investigation is politically motivated and an attempt to interfere with our elections with economic coercion." It also said that extending the date to a day before the election highlighted the "political motivations" behind the decision. Ukraine war: US lawmakers want to cut military aid for Kyiv, extend it to Taiwan

The US Labour Department announced that a staggering 336,000 jobs were added in September, nearly double the expected gain of around 170,000. While the job market flourishes, the unemployment rate remains unchanged at 3.8%.

The Russia-Ukraine war has reached its 590th day. Amid the ongoing war, Ukraine has reportedly developed "invisibility cloaks" that will help hide the war-torn nation's snipers from Russian military thermal imagery cameras.

The coats called 'Brave 1', as per Mirror UK,&nbsp;will soak up heat, which means that the Russian thermal cameras will be unable to detect Ukrainian soldiers. Reportedly, these coats&nbsp;are also waterproof and lightweight.&nbsp;

As per the report, the newly supplied coats have been tested by the Ukraine special forces.&nbsp;

Ukraine's Deputy Minister for Innovation Mykhailo Fedorov called these coats a 'game changer' for Kyiv forces and said: "The cloak blocks the radiation of heat and makes the fighters invisible to the enemy. Joe Biden says meeting with Xi Jinping in November in US 'a possibility'

Carrying on the legacy of the previous government of Donald Trump, the Biden administration on Thursday (Oct 5) 'quietly' announced plans to make additions to the border walls with Mexico.

This wall, a signature policy of Trump, has long been a contentious topic of discussion in Washington politics. WION explains everything you need to know about the US wall with Mexico.

<h2>"High illegal entry"</h2>

On Thursday, US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in a notice in the US Federal Register said that there was "an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries."&nbsp;

The new section of the Mexico wall, as per AFP, will be built in the Rio Grande Valley Sector of the US-Mexico border, which is a "high illegal entry" area, said Mayorkas. The Rio Grande Valley Sector, as per the US Homeland Security Secretary, has been the location of more than 245,000 illegal entrants this fiscal year.

<h2>Biden's stand on the wall</h2>

The day he took office in January 2021, Biden announced, "no more American taxpayer dollars be diverted to construct a border wall".

He also said there would be a review of all the resources that had already been committed.

He had proclaimed: "Building a massive wall that spans the entire southern border is not a serious policy solution."

After 'quietly' announcing the plans for the new addition to the pre-existing wall,&nbsp;Mayorkas said there was "no new Administration policy with respect to border walls. From day one, this Administration has made clear that a border wall is not the answer."

He added that the "additional physical barriers" will be funded for using an appropriation made by Congress for the purpose of this wall back in 2019 when Trump was still in office.

"We have repeatedly asked Congress to rescind this money, but it has not done so, and we are compelled to follow the law," he said.

For the move to go through and the border wall to be extended, some two dozen federal laws such as the Clean Air Act and Endangered Species Act would need to be waived.

Back in May of this year, when the Title 42 law expired, the Biden administration also introduced tough new rule that requires migrants to make an appointment on a government-run smartphone app before approaching a legal port of entry.

Those going against the rule face a tougher bar for asylum if they cross the border illegally.

<h2>Trump claims victory</h2>

The Mexico border wall was former president Trump's signature policy. His first political campaign for president was known for its rally chant, "Build That Wall."

On Thursday, after the Biden administration's plans were announced, Trump was quick to claim victory and demand an apology.

Taking to his social media platform Truth Social, he said: "As I have stated often, over thousands of years, there are only two things that have consistently worked, wheels and walls!"&nbsp;

He also said that the Biden administration showed "I was right when I built 560 miles... of brand new, beautiful border wall."

"Will Joe Biden apologise to me and America for taking so long to get moving, and allowing our country to be flooded with 15 million illegals immigrants, from places unknown," he asked.

<h2>Illegal migrants: A burning issue in US</h2>

Illegal immigration has become a major political issue for Biden. Opposition Republicans have repeatedly accused the president of lax border policies.

Republican governors of states near the border say Biden is not doing enough to stop the crossings, and have even transported some arriving migrants to Democrat-controlled cities such as New York and Chicago.

This has now led to some Democratic leaders voicing criticism against Biden.

On Thursday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams began a trip to Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador, where he will tell would-be migrants that his city cannot accommodate them and that local shelter systems are overwhelmed, reported Reuters.

As per the Washington-based Migration Policy Institute, around 11 million immigrants have entered the US without legal documentation.

These include hundreds and thousands of Venezuelans fleeing economic and political turmoil at home.

To enter the US, they trek through a treacherous jungle region between Colombia and Panama known as the Darien Gap.

This high number of migrants has strained US cities at the border and further north, reports Reuters.

As per the US Department of Justice, there are around two million claims by illegal immigrants looking to extend their stay in the US pending in the immigration court.

Explained: America's 'great' wall | Biden carries on Trump's legacy

The White House said that it has started making plans for a meeting to be held in San Francisco between United States President Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in November, an attempt which is aimed at stabilising the tumultuous relationship between the two countries, as per senior administration officials.

“It’s pretty firm” that a meeting will be held, confirmed an administration even though a formal announcement of the engagement has not happened as of yet. “We’re beginning the process” of planning, said the official, as reported by The Washington Post. &nbsp;

A second senior administration official stated that Biden is looking forward to the scheduled meeting with Xi, but added that “nothing has been confirmed yet.”

The plans will be confirmed after the US visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Washington in the coming weeks, said the administration officials.

This ‘in-person’ meeting will be the first to be held between the leaders of the two countries after their meeting on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, last November. &nbsp; &nbsp;

<h2>Escalating tension between US and China&nbsp;</h2>

A second senior administration official stated that Biden is looking forward to the scheduled meeting with Xi, but added that “nothing has been confirmed yet.” The plans will be confirmed after the US visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Washington in the coming weeks, said the administration officials. White House plans face-to-face meeting between Biden and China’s Xi Jinping in California

Biden administration on Wednesday (Oct 4) made a significant move by invoking a rarely used executive power, one which was frequently employed during the Trump presidency, to waive 26 federal laws in South Texas. This controversial decision, which has made environmental experts jittery, paves the way for the construction of a border wall, covering a span of up to 20 miles, media reports said.&nbsp;

The Department of Homeland Security posted this announcement on the US Federal Registry. However, it provided only limited specifics about the construction. The scope of the construction is primarily situated in Starr County, Texas. The County falls within a particularly active Border Patrol sector known for experiencing a high level of illegal entry.

As per US government data, the Rio Grande Valley Sector, encompassing 21 counties, has recorded approximately 245,000 illegal entries in the current fiscal year. “There is presently an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries into the United States in the project areas,” the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, said in a statement.&nbsp;

<h2>Environmental concerns&nbsp;</h2>

This highly contentious move by the Biden administration has concerned environmental activists with many pointing at the damage and destruction it will bring to the habitat. Among the federal laws that were waived were the Clean Air Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. The construction funds will be from a congressional appropriation in 2019 for border wall construction, as per reports.&nbsp;&nbsp;

With the help of these waivers, tedious reviews and environmental lawsuits will be done away with. Environmental advocates have expressed shock over the decision and said that the structures will pass through public lands and habitats of endangered plants and species.

United States President Joe Biden on Wednesday (Oct 4) announced that his administration approved an additional $9 billion in student debt relief for 125,000 borrowers. President Biden said that this additional approval brought the total approved debt cancellation by his administration to $127 billion for nearly 3.6 million American citizens. "This kind of relief is life-changing for individuals and their families. But it's good for our economy as a whole as well," Biden said. "Next, we fixed what's called the income-driven repayment program. Here's how that works. If you have an undergraduate loan, after 20 years of straight pay, not missing paying a debt on a monthly basis, whatever's left of your loan is forgiven after 20 years. But because of administrative failures, some people who did pay their loans for 20 years or more did not get the debt relief they'd earned. We fixed that and made sure borrowers got credit for every single payment they made," he added. Biden also said that his administration was doing everything it could to deliver student debt relief "to as many as we can as fast as we can." Biden admits worry about aid for war-torn Ukraine On Wednesday, President Biden also said that he was worried that the ongoing political turmoil in the US could threaten Washington's aid to war-torn Ukraine. He urged Republicans to stop their infighting and back "critically important" assistance for Kyiv. "It does worry me," Biden told reporters when asked whether the ousting of Republican House speaker Kevin McCarthy by hardliners in his own party could derail more funds for Ukraine's war effort. "But I know there are a majority of members of the House and Senate of both parties who have said that they support funding Ukraine," he added. The president also said he would soon be giving a major speech on the need to support Ukraine's fight against the Russian invasion. He declined to comment on when he would make the speech. Hunter Biden pleads not guilty to charges of illegally possessing handgun

Hunter Biden, the son of US&nbsp;President Joe Biden, is likely to plead not guilty to gun charges. Hunter, who will be appearing in the federal court in Delaware on Tuesday (Oct 3),&nbsp; has been charged with illegal possession of a handgun.

The 53-year-old is facing three felony charges because of a .38-caliber Colt Cobra revolver he purchased in 2018.

The younger Biden has been charged with two counts of making false claims while filling the form needed for gun purchase, wherein&nbsp;he stated that he was not illegally using drugs at the time.

Based on the same statements, he is facing a third charge for illegally possessing the gun, which he had kept with himself for just 11 days in October 2018, and later gotten rid of.

The lawyer of Hunter Biden, Abbe Lowell, informed the court that the former will be pleading not guilty at Tuesday's 10:00 am (1400 GMT) arraignment to be held at a federal courthouse in Wilmington, the hometown of the Bidens.

Lowell further asked Judge Christopher Burke to permit Biden, who has been living in California, to appear in the court via video call and not in person. However, that request was denied.

"The defendant should not receive any special treatment in this matter," wrote Burke&nbsp;in his ruling.

In July, Biden failed to finalise a deal with federal prosecutor David Weiss, which would have freed him from the gun charges while he pleaded guilty to two tax charges and escaped prison.

Because of this, Weiss filed three felony gun possession charges against Hunter Biden.

If the court convicts Hunter Biden, he could face 25 years of imprisonment in theory, although in practice, such offences, if not pressed along with other charges, are not punished with any prison term.

Hours after the&nbsp;US Congress passed the stopgap bill, President Joe Biden&nbsp;signed the bill and&nbsp;averted the government shutdown just before the&nbsp;funding for federal agencies was about to run out, said the White House, in a statement.

"I just signed a law to keep the government open for 47 days. There’s plenty of time to pass Government funding bills for the next fiscal year, and I strongly urge Congress to get to work right away. The American people expect their government to work. Let’s make sure it does," said Biden in a post on X. He also posted a photo of the signing of the bill.

In the 11th hour, the US Congress passed the government funding bill on Saturday (Sep 30) to ensure that the federal agencies continue running for the next 45 days and averted a costly shutdown. However, the deal did not include aid to war-torn Ukraine, which was requested by President Joe Biden.

With three hours left before midnight Saturday deadline, the Senate voted in favour of a resolution, which had advanced earlier from the House of Representatives to continue government funding through mid-November.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy pitched the last-ditch "continuing resolution" as government functions from federal policymaking to military operations to food aid stood on the verge of getting upended and the future of millions of public workers remained uncertain.

Welcoming the deal which averted a government shutdown on Saturday (Sep 30), US President Joe Biden appealed to Congress to swiftly give approval to Ukraine aid which was left out of the agreement.

"Tonight, bipartisan majorities in the House and Senate voted to keep the government open, preventing an unnecessary crisis that would have inflicted needless pain on millions of hardworking Americans," said Biden, in a statement.

Biden signs stopgap funding bill, US government shutdown averted last minute

US President Joe Biden on Thursday (September 28) asked a heckler to "shush up" when he tried disrupting his speech at an event in Tempe, Arizona. Biden was delivering a speech announcing funding for the McCain National Library.

Footage shot at the event shows the heckler interrupting Biden about five minutes into his speech at the Tempe Center for the Arts.

“Hang on a second, " Biden says, “I’ll be happy to meet with you after I speak, okay?”

However, the heckler continued. He shouted “Why have you yet to declare a climate emergency?”

"I'll tell you what," said Biden "If you'll shush up I'll meet you immediately after this, okay?"

'Shush up,' President Biden tells heckler during Arizona speech honouring John McCain

House Republicans on Thursday (Sep 28) launched an impeachment inquiry hearings into US President Joe Biden based on unproven allegations that he lied about his son Hunter’s business dealings.

House Republicans on Thursday (Sep 28) launched an impeachment inquiry hearings into US President Joe Biden based on unproven allegations that he lied about his son Hunter’s business dealings. The inquiry of Biden detailed foreign payments to his family, but no evidence was provided that he had personally benefitted. The initial impeachment hearing by the House of Representatives Oversight Committee served as a review of evidence that Republicans have gathered so far about foreign business ventures by Hunter, which they said showed that Biden family members were selling access, the news agency Reuters reported. 'Biden profited from policies he pursued as vice prez' "The American people demand accountability for this culture of corruption," House Oversight Committee chair James Comer said, adding that the president lied about family members' business dealings and had not walled them off from his official duties. Republican party leaders alleged that Biden and his family profited from policies he pursued as vice president during Barack Obama's administration between 2009 and 2017. Also on Thursday, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said that he had issued subpoenas for bank records belonging to Hunter and the president's brother, Frank, as part of an investigation into the family's financial dealings. 'No proof Biden engaged in improper behaviour': Democrats On Thursday, Democrats and several other witnesses said that there was no evidence that Biden received any foreign payments, or engaged in improper behaviour while he served as vice president. Jamie Raskin, the panel's top Democrat, said, "If Republicans had a smoking gun or even a dripping water pistol they would be presenting it today. But they've got nothing." According to Reuters, it is unclear if House Republicans would have votes at the end of the inquiry to support actual impeachment. Even if the vote succeeds, it is highly unlikely that the Senate would vote to remove Biden from the president's post. In Arizona, Biden launches personal attack on Trump As the impeachment inquiry was launched, Biden launched a personal attack on former US president Donald Trump, accusing him of plotting to subvert the US Constitution if he wins a return to power next year. Addressing a speech in Arizona, Biden said that Trump was driven by "vengeance and vindictiveness", and he urged Americans to stand up for democracy before it was too late. US: House Republicans open Biden impeachment inquiry with focus on son Hunter

US President Joe Biden on Thursday (Sep 28) launched a personal attack on "extremist" Donald Trump, indicating that the Republican who could be his 2024 challenger, would challenge the country's constitution if he comes back to power next year.

Speaking in the battleground state of Arizona, the Democrat said that Trump was driven by "vengeance and vindictiveness", and he appealed to Americans to take a stand for the country's democracy before it is too late.

Biden delivered the speech as impeachment inquiry hearings were launched by House Republicans into the 80-year-old president on the basis of unproven allegations that he lied about the business dealings of his son Hunter Biden.

"We should all remember: democracies don't have to die at the end of a rifle. They can die when people are silent, when they fail to stand up, or condemn threats to democracy,” Biden stated.

Biden has tried to avoid commenting on the cases which stemmed from efforts of Trump to overturn his 2020 election loss and led to an attack on the US Capitol by a mob of his supporters on January 6, 2021.

However, in Arizona, he took an unusual step of addressing Trump by name, as he accused the former president and his followers of attacking the rule of law and the free press and planning to gut the country's institutions if he gets a second term.

<h2>'Something dangerous happening in America'</h2>

"Trump says the constitution gave him 'the right to do what he wants'," stated Biden, while referring to the statements made by Trump regarding his powers in office.

"I've never even heard a president say that in jest -- not guided by the constitution or by common service and decency towards our fellow Americans, but by vengeance and vindictiveness,” he added.

Issuing a dark warning, Biden stated there was "something dangerous happening in America" and that the Republican Party was "driven and intimidated" by Trump's MAGA (Make America Great Again) fringe.

He slammed the Republicans for not speaking up after the country's top military officer was recently accused of treason by Trump, and slammed the hardline Trump allies for pushing the country in the direction of a government shutdown this weekend.

The president further recalled how Trump had reportedly called to service members killed or captured in action as "suckers and losers".

"Was he [Beau Biden, the late son of Biden who served in military] a sucker for volunteering to serve his country?" asked the president.

US President Joe Biden joins striking auto workers, says 'you deserve the raise'

United States President Joe Biden on Tuesday (Sep 26) joined striking auto workers on the picket line in Michigan in what the White House called a "historic" first step taken by a sitting US president.

The 80-year-old Democrat wore a baseball cap and used a megaphone to address the United Auto Workers (UAW) union's workers in Wayne County. Speaking to the banner-waving employees, he said to them that he was on their side.

Speaking to the workers, Biden said that the "Big Three" automakers - General Motors, Ford and Stellantis - were "doing incredibly well and guess what, you should be doing incredibly well too."

"You deserve the significant raise you need and other benefits," he stated, as the crowd cheered along. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called it a "historic" trip.

"Today will mark the first time a sitting president has visited a picket line in modern times," said Jean-Pierre, while speaking to the reporters aboard Air Force One. "This is an important message to America's auto workers,” he added.

Biden was greeted by the UAW's outspoken chief Shawn Fain on the tarmac in Detroit, who also accompanied him to the picket line.

56-year-old auto worker Patrick Smaller said, "That is huge” while speaking about Biden's visit from the picket line outside a massive Ford plant located in Wayne County, Michigan on Tuesday.

"He believes in what we stand for,” he added. As trucks and cars honked in support, another worker Tiara Conner said that Biden's visit was "great".

The former and current presidents are both aiming for the blue-collar vote in Michigan, a key swing state which was won by Trump in 2016 and then flipped back to Biden in 2020.

Biden has also talked up his pro-union credentials, and three years ago, an endorsement from the United Auto Workers (UAW) union helped the leader secure the presidency. "I always support the UAW", said Biden on Monday.

Biden has stated that he feels union workers deserve their "fair share" of the record earnings of the companies and added that the time has come for a "win-win agreement" between the automakers and union.

On Monday, when quizzed whether he supports the UAW demands, Biden said, “I think the UAW gave up an incredible amount back when the automobile industry was going under. They gave up everything from their pensions on, and they saved the automobile industry.”

Workers call it 'huge' 56-year-old auto worker Patrick Smaller said, "That is huge” while speaking about Biden's visit from the picket line outside a massive Ford plant located in Wayne County, Michigan on Tuesday. They gave up everything from their pensions on, and they saved the automobile industry.” You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Joe Biden joins striking US auto workers, becomes first US president to visit picket line

US President Joe Biden, on Wednesday (September 27), is likely to announce a USD 100 million research drive to fight deadly drug-resistant bacteria, said Reuters citing an unnamed White House official. World Health Organization (WHO) data says that more than a million people die across the world each year due to infections caused by antibiotics-resistant bacteria. The concern is growing across the globe that infectious bacteria would soon be completely resistant to even 'last-resort' antibiotics.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control, more than 35,000 people lose their lives annually due to drug-resistant bacteria.

The problem of drug-resistant bacteria is believed to have become worse after the Covid pandemic as many patients across the world were prescribed antibiotics.

Experts all over the world have been warning of 'superbugs' or evolved bacteria that develop resistance to antibiotics due to their misuse and overuse.

This has given rise to need for new antibiotics capable of combating drug-resistant bacteria. However, there hasn't been much incentive for such a research in drug companies as antibiotics are not especially profitable.

The big push by the Biden administration will spur research that will be driven by Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). It is a government research agency which was launched last year by President Biden and the US Congress.

It has been reported that Biden is planning to make the announcement during a meeting in San Francisco with President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

The council includes academic experts and officials from Advanced Micro Devices, Microsoft and Google.&nbsp;

Reuters cited the unnamed White House official who said that Biden is also likely to discuss an executive order that's being drafted. The order is on artificial intelligence.

Biden to kickstart USD 100 million drive to fight drug-resistant bacteria: Report

On Monday, the United States of America formally established diplomatic relations with two Pacific Island nations, officially recognizing Niue and the Cook Islands. The acknowledgment comes at a time when President Joe Biden has made it a top priority since taking office to fortify ties in the Indo-Pacific area in opposition to China's growing sway. In an effort to strengthen ties with Pacific Island countries, the administration convened the leaders of the Pacific Island Forum on Monday at the White House.
