The discussion also touched on concerns about Moscow's response to foreign troops in Ukraine. The book says that a month later, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told Rubio that Russia would regard troops from NATO countries in Ukraine as “unacceptable,” even if they operated under another banner. The authors also write that Trump repeatedly criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the meeting. “He’s a bad negotiator,” Trump reportedly said. “And he’s destroyed his country. But he was really good at getting stuff from the Biden administration.”

The book claims Trump spoke about his cordial ties with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the latter's desire to visit, then remarked that “the Indians do not ever pay for anything,” referring to troop deployment.

The US Treasury Department on Monday issued a general license authorising the sale of production, delivery and sale of Iranian oil. The authorisation follows a negotiation which was described by US Vice President JD Vance as “a lot of good progress”, and a “very good foundation”. The license is likely to expire on August 21, unless renewed. It was part of a move promised under the Memorandum of Understanding reached by Washington and Iran last week. In exchange, Iran will open the Strait of Hormuz and allow IAEA nuclear inspectors to verify Iran's compliance with the preliminary agreement."In line with the ongoing productive talks in Switzerland, Iran has committed to free and open transit in the Strait of Hormuz and to permit International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors into their country," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a post on X. The US had already lifted the blockade of Iran’s ports and coastal areas last Thursday.
Qatar's role in the mediation
“It’s important to note that Qatar only became a mediator after Pakistan succeeded in reaching a certain level of stabilisation — the ceasefire, the initial Islamabad talks, regardless of their outcome,” said Rashid Al-Mohanadi, vice president at the Centre for International Policy Research. Pakistanis engaged when the region was reaching a boiling point, when Qataris and Omanis could not have done anything. Pakistan could communicate with Iran due to their shared diplomatic concerns about Israeli aggression in the region.Analysts suggest that, compared to the JCPOA brokered by Obama in 2015, this deal seems more promising due to the presence of wider regional stakes. It gives everyone an agency for grievance, either about Iran's interference in the region or about Israel's unilateral aggression, which was absent earlier. The European leadership involved in the JCPOA rarely bothered about non-Western actors. “Now there is a chance for this region to take some agency and develop a new security architecture that everybody can either subscribe to now, or that gains enough critical mass for other actors to join later,” said Al-Mohanadi.

'Israel should wake up and smell reality': Vance warns Netanyahu and cabinet over attacking Iran deal

US Vice President JD Vance has said that Israel “cannot kill its way out” of its long-standing security challenges, stressing the need for a broader diplomatic approach. His remarks come as he defends the US-backed memorandum of understanding aimed at reducing tensions with Iran and ending the prolonged conflict dynamics in the region.

US Vice President JD Vance claimed that “some element within Israel” like the US-Iran deal “quite a bit". During a CNBC interview, Vance responded to widespread condemnation from Israeli politicians across the political spectrum. Iran’s Foreign Minister has issued fresh remarks just hours after Donald Trump accused Tehran of leaking misleading details about a possible US-Iran agreement. The latest exchange highlights growing tensions and confusion surrounding ongoing negotiations, as both sides continue to send mixed signals over a potential deal.

The United States and Iran have made significant progress toward extending their ceasefire agreement, but President Donald Trump has not yet decided whether to approve the deal, US Vice President JD Vance said on Thursday (May 28). “We're going back and forth on a couple of language points. In his strongest warning yet on artificial intelligence, Pope Leo has urged governments worldwide to urgently regulate AI and “disarm” autonomous weapons systems. He warned that rapidly advancing military AI technologies may already be moving beyond meaningful human control.

From AI-driven target generation systems used in modern warfare to the escalating race between governments and private tech companies, the Vatican says the world may be entering a deeply dangerous new era where decision-making in war could shift away from humans.

Google's Dire Warning On AI: Vance Terms Pope's AI Warning As 'Profound'

Reports suggest that US Vice President JD Vance may not enter the 2028 presidential race amid shifting political dynamics within the Republican Party. His declining political fortunes come as Secretary of State Marco Rubio gains momentum, fueling speculation of an internal GOP realignment.

US Vice President JD Vance praised Pope Leo XIV on Tuesday (May 26) for releasing a new theological document warning about unchecked advances in artificial intelligence. The encyclical, the pope’s first since taking office last year, called for restraint that does not halt innovation but instead serves as the exercise of responsible care for the human family. Vance, a Catholic and supporter of AI development, said in a phone interview with NBC News that he had not yet finished reading the document but had reviewed summaries and excerpts. “What I read of it sounds very profound, and the sort of thing that you would expect and hope from a leader of the church,” he said. “The thing about morality is that the principles never change, but the way you apply those principles does, because the world changes, right?” “You have new technologies and warfare, so you have to update ‘Just War’ doctrine,” Vance added. “New ways of human beings interacting with one another, so you have to kind of rethink the entire Catholic social teaching in light of the new world that we live in. And I think that’s exactly what the pope is trying to do. So I’m glad that he did it.” The encyclical was released alongside Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic. The company’s involvement drew attention after the Trump administration reportedly ordered federal agencies to stop using Anthropic technology when the company refused unrestricted military access to its AI systems. Tuesday’s interview also served as Vance’s first public preview of his upcoming book, Communion, scheduled for release on June 16 through HarperCollins. The book explores Vance’s spiritual journey from a Protestant childhood to atheism and eventually his conversion to Catholicism. Also Read: South Carolina Senate rejects GOP's plan to redraw districts during primary voting Vance also confirmed reports that he removed X from his phone during Lent, the Christian season leading to Easter. Although Lent ended on April 2, he said he still has not reinstalled the app. “It’s one of these things where not having that as a distraction, I think, has made me much more productive,” Vance said. “You’re not scrolling all the time when you get five minutes. I can actually read something, as opposed to, you know, scroll or get distracted by X.” Despite stepping away from the platform, Vance said his account remains active, and many posts are still written by him before staff members publish them. “I live in such a crazy bubble,” Vance said. “I travel with Secret Service all the time. If you think about how many unplanned interactions I have in a given week, it’s close to zero, because I live in such a bubble. And I think one of the good things about social media is that it actually exposes you to unfiltered raw opinions, and that’s one of the things that I need to hear as a political leader. So I will definitely reinstall it, but I’ve enjoyed my little break from it.” The vice president also discussed lifestyle changes during Lent, including a diet recommended by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., focused on high protein and fermented foods.“I think it definitely made me feel healthier, and it’s something I’ve continued with,” Vance added. “So, you know, that’s one of the cool things about Lent, is sometimes you do these things as an act of sacrifice, and you realize that not indulging yourself is maybe a very good thing.” Baptized in 2019, Vance has frequently connected his political role with his Catholic faith. US Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday (May 19) said divisions within Iran’s leadership continue to complicate negotiations as the Trump administration pushes for a deal aimed at ending the conflict. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Vance said Iran’s internal power structure has made it difficult to determine the country’s negotiating stance. “The Iranians aren’t themselves quite clear in what direction they want to go; they are also just a fractured country,” Vance told reporters at the White House. “You have the leadership of the country, there’s the supreme leader, and there are a lot of officials below the supreme leader that [have] some influence in negotiation. It’s not sometimes totally clear what the negotiating position of the team is,” he continued. Vance added that it remains uncertain whether the confusion stems from communication failures or bad faith during negotiations. “I will say with confidence it’s sometimes hard to figure out exactly what it is that the Iranians want to accomplish out of the negotiation,” he said. The vice president also dismissed reports suggesting Russia could take control of Iran’s enriched uranium as part of a future agreement. “That is not currently our plan. That has never been our plan. I’ve seen some reporting on that. I don’t know where it comes from,” Vance said during a White House briefing on Tuesday. Also Read: Putin arrives in Beijing for talks with Xi days after Trump’s China visit He indicated that such a proposal would likely face opposition from both the United States and Iran. “So, that is not currently the plan of the United States government. The Iranians have not raised it. I sense that it’s not something the Iranians would be particularly excited about, and I know the president isn’t particularly excited about it either,” he added. Still, Vance emphasized that the administration would avoid making fixed commitments during ongoing talks. “But the vice president said he would not make pre-commitments in a negotiation ‘on any particular topic.’” On domestic matters, Vance addressed the administration’s $1.776 billion compensation fund tied to January 6 prosecutions. He clarified that the program was not designed for individuals who assaulted police officers, though claims would still be reviewed individually. “We’re not trying to give money to anybody who attacked a police officer. We’re trying to give money, not give money, we’re trying to compensate people where the book was thrown at them, they were mistreated by the legal system,” Vance said. https://www.wionews.com/videos/nato-scrambles-jets-in-latvian-airspace-near-russia-border-1779210977745/embed “We do have people who were accused of attacking law enforcement officers,” he said. “That doesn’t mean that we are going to completely ignore some of the claims that they are going to make,” Vance said. Every case would undergo individual review, and denied that members of the Trump family would benefit from the compensation fund. “The people that would get the money are people, some of whom have been prosecuted completely disproportionate to any crime they have ever committed,” he said. The vice president also claimed the United States had significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities and said President Donald Trump instructed his team to pursue negotiations aggressively. According to Vance, talks are progressing positively, but he warned that military action remains an option if diplomacy fails. He said negotiations are in a “good spot,” but added that “it takes two to tango” and the United States is “locked and loaded” to restart military operations if necessary.

US VP Vance: Iran Must Meet US For Peace Deal

US Vice President JD Vance said on Wednesday (May 13) that the United States continues to make progress in ongoing negotiations with Iran, even as talks face growing challenges due to what he described as unsatisfactory responses from Tehran in recent weeks. Speaking to reporters during a press briefing, Vance said senior members of the administration remain actively engaged with both American negotiators and regional allies as diplomatic efforts continue. “I spent a good amount of time on the phone with both Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff this morning, and a number of our friends in the Arab world this morning,” Vance told reporters. “Look, I think that we are making progress. The fundamental question is, do we make enough progress that we satisfy the president’s red line?” Kushner and Witkoff are currently leading the administration’s diplomatic outreach regarding Iran, as Washington seeks to prevent further escalation in the Middle East while attempting to revive a workable framework for long-term regional stability. Despite signs of movement in negotiations, Vance acknowledged that recent responses from Tehran have fallen short of US expectations, creating uncertainty over whether both sides can eventually reach a comprehensive agreement. The vice president reiterated that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains the administration’s top priority and the key condition for any future deal. Also Read: US Senate confirms Kevin Warsh as next Federal Reserve Chair amid rising inflation “The red line is very simple,” Vance said, adding that the president needs to feel confident that we’ve put several protections in place such that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon. United States Vice President JD Vance says US-Iran peace talks are progressing, but warns any deal must guarantee Iran never obtains nuclear weapons

'I think that we are making progress': Vance hints optimism in Iran negotiations but nuclear red line remains

US Vice President JD Vance may be reportedly worried about the depleting stockpiles of American missiles and has repeatedly questioned the Pentagon’s portrayal of the war in Iran. According to a report, Vance has queried the accuracy of information provided to US President Donald Trump about the conflict amid reports suggesting that the US may be running low on its missiles. The Atlantic reported, citing sources, that the vice president has expressed concerns over the availability of certain missile systems in discussions with the president. In case of the US depleting its munition reserves, the American forces would need to draw the stockpiles to defend Taiwan against China, South Korea against North Korea, and Europe against Russia.Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and General Dan Caine, who chairs the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have publicly stated that the US weapons stockpiles are robust, reporting significant damage to Iranian forces after eight weeks of fighting. The outlet added that while Vance is trying to avoid making the concern personal or creating differences among the cabinet, he believes Hegseth’s portrayal of the war has been so positive as to be misleading. In a statement, Vance said that Hegseth was doing a “great job” and working with Trump to ensure a “warrior ethos” in the military’s top ranks. A White House official told the Atlantic that Vance “asks a lot of probing questions about our strategic planning, as do all of the members of the president’s national-security team.”Earlier in March, the Pentagon chief declared the US military’s “complete control” of Iranian skies. However, in April, Iranian forces downed an American F-15E fighter jet. Following this, a high-risk rescue operation was launched by the US to extract the pilot stuck behind the enemy lines.
Is US running out of stockpiles?
Multiple reports have suggested that the US stockpiles of weapons, including interceptors, may be running out. American stockpiles had already been strained in recent years. The US used large numbers of interceptors to defend Israel during last year’s 12-day war with Iran and has also supplied significant weapons shipments to Ukraine.Despite the concerns, the Trump administration insists that US stockpiles remain strong. Trump wrote on social media earlier this week that American reserves of “medium and upper medium grade” munitions were “virtually unlimited,” dismissing reports of shortages.White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt has echoed similar remarks, dismissing reports of a shortage of American weapons amid the war. “We have weapon stockpiles in places that many in this world don’t even know about,” she said, adding that the United States has more than enough weapons to sustain a prolonged conflict.Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others.
