Underlining the significance of the role played by the youth of Jammu and Kashmir in strengthening the democracy, as many as 1,20,612 &nbsp;lakh voters aged 18 to 19 are eligible to vote in phase II of the Assembly Elections. Among these, 11,294 are male and 10,065 are female first-time voters.

Jammu & Kashmir: Big names in fray for 26 assembly seats in second phase of polls

Two&nbsp;soldiers were killed amid an ongoing operation in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar in the Jammu region, while two others were injured, said the Indian Army, late Friday (Sep 13).&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Nagrota-based White Knight Corps had earlier said that four Indian&nbsp;Army personnel had been injured in the gunfight. However,&nbsp;two personnel reportedly&nbsp;succumbed to injuries while they were being taken to the hospital.&nbsp;

"#GOC (General Officer Commanding)&nbsp;White Knight Corps and all ranks salute the supreme sacrifice of the #Bravehearts; offer deepest condolences to the families," said the&nbsp;White Knight Corps, in a post on X.&nbsp;

The operation started at around 3:30 pm (local time)&nbsp;and during the initial gunfight, four Indian Army soldiers were injured. All the injured soldiers have been taken to the army's base hospital.

The Indian Army said, "Based on the intelligence inputs, a joint operation with J&amp;K Police was launched in area Chatroo at Kishtwar. A contact has been established with the terrorists at 3:30 pm. In the ensuing firefight, four army personnel were injured. The operation is in progress."

Earlier, the Indian Army had said that two terrorists were killed in the Kathua Encounter and the search in the area was called off. "In the Joint operation launched on 11 September by Troops of rising corps&nbsp;and J&amp;K police two terrorists neutralised and large war-like stores were recovered. Operations concluded,"&nbsp;said the Indian Army.

International cricket returns to J&K, over 100 cricketing stars to play in Srinagar for Legends League Cricket

According to recent&nbsp;data, 109 terror incidents happened in the last three years in the Union Territory, and out of them 53 per cent were witnessed in the hills of Jammu.

Around 51 security personnel have lost their lives in the Union territory since June 2021. The&nbsp;terrorists are continuously targeting security forces in Poonch, Rajouri, Kathua, Reasi, Doda, and Udhampur districts.&nbsp;

In 2024,&nbsp;Jammu witnessed 14 terror attacks, and 13 security personnel were killed during these attacks.

Sources in security forces say that around 25-30 foreign terrorists who have recently infiltrated are active in the Doda, Chenab Valley belt and the same number are active in Poonch-Rajouri belt. These terrorists have divided into small groups and are moving from one place to another, and are carrying out these attacks and ambushes.&nbsp;

Our sources say that most of these terrorists belong to Jaish and Lashkar, and all are foreigners. And most of the&nbsp;attacks that have taken place in the Doda area have been claimed by Kashmir Tiger's, an offshoot of Jaish. Most&nbsp;of the attacks that have taken place in Poonch and Rajouri were claimed by ‘People’s Anti-Fascist Front’ of Jaish and Lashkar.&nbsp;

Defence analysts say all these terrorists are from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa having battle experience, including in Afghanistan, and Syria, sources added that former Pakistan Army soldiers may also be among them.

The presence of Pathan fighters from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region, who have earlier fought alongside the Taliban, cannot be ruled out.&nbsp;

According to some top officials, the active terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir recently infiltrated in the past six months from Shamshawari hills of Kupwara range of Kashmir and managed to reach Chenab valley and the Poonch-Rajouri sector. The terrorists have also infiltrated from the international border.

However, both the Poonch-Rajouri and Doda-Kathua-Reasi batches have the same modus operandi. They have the same level of military training, reconnaissance capability, aversion to use of technology and similar guerilla warfare tactics.&nbsp;

Experts say that these terrorists are carrying out the arms and ammunition left behind by the US army in Afghanistan. These terrorists also carry body cams to make videos of the attacks they carry out and release them on social media later to glorify terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

However, security forces believe that these videos can be used to attract&nbsp;Kashmiri youth to join the militant ranks.&nbsp;

The home minister ordered security services to duplicate the effective "area domination plan" and "zero terror plan," which had been previously executed in the Kashmir Valley, in the Jammu division during the six-hour long meeting.

Shah stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is determined to setting an example by combating terrorism through innovative measures. Shah gave orders to all security services to operate in mission mode and guarantee prompt, well-coordinated responses.

Along with stressing upon the necessity of strong security for the pilgrimage, the Home Minister also called on authorities to guarantee the security of all routes and important sites.

The Home Minister in a statement released by the ministry of home affairs said,&nbsp;"the fight against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir is in its decisive phase."

The meeting comes after a wave of terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, including a terrorist attack on a bus taking&nbsp;pilgrims to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra. Nine people were killed and several&nbsp;injured in the incident.

The Yatra is scheduled to start on June 29 and run until August 19. Baltal and Pahalgam are the two routes pilgrims to Amarnath use via Jammu and Kashmir. This year, the officials anticipate that there may be up to five lakh pilgrims.

An insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh would be provided to all pilgrims, along with RFID tags that allow them to track their exact whereabouts in real-time. A Rs 50,000 insurance policy will also be provided for each animal used to transport pilgrims.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the BJP leader's delegation that met&nbsp;with the CEC stressed&nbsp;the ease of voting for the people,&nbsp;especially for the Kashmiri Pandit Community. The BJP leaders also supported the idea of holding both elections together in the Union Territory.&nbsp;

''We were a delegation of four, and we spoke about the easement of voting for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. And how to have a maximum voting percentage in the Valley. We also spoke about Kashmiri Pandit votes, and how to simplify it for them as well. We want polling booths to be set up in Jammu and Delhi from where they can cast their votes. The Peoples Democratic Party said that if the Centre says the security situation in the Valley has improved, then nothing should stop them from holding both&nbsp;elections together.&nbsp;

''We raised all our points and concerns with the Election Commission. We raised the point that if the security situation in the valley is alright, what's stopping them from holding parliamentary and assembly elections together in the Valley? "Jammu and Kashmir is moving towards overall development now. It is because of the abrogation of Article 370, I have urged the people to help BJP win 370 seats and NDA win 400 seats in (2024 Lok Sabha) elections."

"I have full faith in you and we will make 'Viksit Jammu and Kashmir.' Your dreams of 70 years will be fulfilled by Modi in the coming years. Earlier, only disappointing news of bombs, kidnappings and separation used to come from Jammu and Kashmir, but now Jammu and Kashmir is developing and moving forward," he added during his speech.

"Jammu and Kashmir had to bear the brunt of dynastic politics for decades. They are only concerned about their families, not about your interests, your families...I am happy that Jammu and Kashmir is getting freedom from this dynastic politics," said PM Modi.

This is the PM's second visit to Jammu during his second term as prime minister. Before this, he had visited in April 2022. This visit comes just months ahead of the April-May Lok Sabha elections.

On the eve of his visit to Jammu, the PM had said that the projects he will dedicate to the nation will be a big boost to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and to India as a whole.

“I look forward to being in Jammu tomorrow to inaugurate key development works which will boost ‘Ease of Living.’ It will also be a landmark day for the education sector as various institutions including IITs and IIMs will get permanent campuses,” he posted on X, on Monday.
