India and Sri Lanka on Saturday reviewed the progress in extending loans worth a total of $1.5 billion to the island nation for emergency purchases of food, medicines and fuel to tide over an economic crisis. The matter figured in a virtual meeting between external affairs minister S Jaishankar and Sri Lankan finance minister Basil Rajapaksa.

The ministers also discussed the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan and what can be done to protect Afghans and citizens of neighbouring countries from the crisis, especially considering Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan share borders with Afghanistan.<o:p></o:p>

"We all also share deep-rooted historical and civilisational ties with Afghanistan," Jaishankar said while talking to his counterparts. "We must find ways of helping the people of Afghanistan."<o:p></o:p>

The leaders talked about the impact the Afghan crisis can and is having on the economies of their own home country. They "reiterated strong support for a peaceful, secure and stable Afghanistan while emphasising the respect for sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, and non-interference in its internal affairs," a joint statement said.

It has also been decided that the participating nations will continue providing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan in order to ensure that the locals there do not suffer due to the ongoing crisis. They have also decided to stay updated and continue close consultation regarding the situation in Afghanistan.<o:p></o:p>

They also stressed upon the importance of UNSC Resolution 2593 (2021). This resolutions states that the territory of Afghan should not be used for sheltering, training, planning, financing or carrying out acts of terror.<o:p></o:p>

Talking about the importance of defence and security related consultations among nations, the ministers "condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and reiterated that providing safe haven, using terrorist proxies for cross-border terrorism, terror financing, arms and drugs trafficking, dissemination of a radical ideology, and abuse of cyber space to spread disinformation and incite violence goes against the basic principles of humanity and international relations".<o:p></o:p>

They also used this opportunity to urge international leaders and organisations to come together to help fight terrorism on a global level and follow UNSC resolutions, Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, and FATF standards, the joint statement said.<o:p></o:p>

In the aftermath of the Taliban takeover, Tajikistan had provided its airbase for Indian Air force planes which were deployed for evacuation.&nbsp;

Indian goverment operated several special Indian Air Force and Air India flights under “Operation Devi Shakti” to evacuate stranded Indian and Afghan nationals from Afghanistan, from 16 to 25 August 2021. It is well known that India operates its first overseas airbase in Tajikistan's&nbsp;Ayni.

On Afghanistan, EAM said, "We’ve also, of course as neighbours of Afghanistan, we have been very concerned at the developments there. And the participation of the Secretary of your Security Council in the Regional Security Dialogue, which we hosted in November, is something which is deeply appreciated."

CDS General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and other 11 Armed Forces personnel lost their lives in a helicopter crash on Wednesday (December 8).&nbsp;

Indian Air Force helicopter Mi-17V5, carrying defence chief crashed in southern India - near the town of Coonoor in Tamil Nadu. The helicopter was on its way from Sulur in Coimbatore to the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington.&nbsp;

China deploys bomber along border with India: Report

The Quad meeting is seen as one of the key dividends of the Abraham accords that saw the normalisation of ties between Israel and the United Arab Emirates. UAE was the first country in the Persian Gulf to normalize ties with Israel.

India has strong ties with both Israel and UAE in West Asia and since the accords were signed, they have worked in a trilateral arrangement. In May, the three&nbsp;countries signed the first-ever pact that involves producing robotic solar cleaning technology in India for a project in UAE by an Israel-based company Ecoppia. The trilateral partnership was initiated by the International Federation of Indo-Israel Chambers of Commerce (IFIICC).

During the press conference, a question was asked on the Indian covid vaccine, COVAXIN's getting recognition by UAE, to which Indian envoy to UAE, &nbsp;Pavan Kapoor said,&nbsp;"UAE has clearly said in the past, they recognise all WHO-approved vaccines.

COVAXIN is WHO-recognised and it is very much recognised by UAE. WHO gave authorisation to the Indian vaccine earlier this month. New Delhi has also formally taken up with UAE, the need to remove rapid tests for covid at the airport given increased vaccination, low level of Covid-positive cases in India.&nbsp;

Indian expatriate community of around 3.3 million is the largest ethnic community in UAE constituting roughly about 30 per cent of the country’s population. Among the Indian States, Kerala is the most represented followed by Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Indians from the Northern States also form a significant portion of the UAE Indian population.

New Delhi and Washington have turned to the other side of the Indian Ocean that India straddles after firming up cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region multilaterally with the Quad&nbsp;the grouping of their countries and Australia and Japan.

Earlier this month, Jaishankar and Blinken held a virtual meeting with Foreign Ministers Yair Lapid of Israel and Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) -- four countries that share many regional strategic interests -- and discussed "future opportunities for collaboration in the region and globally", according to the State Department.

Jaishankar tweeted after the Rome meeting that they had a "good meeting" and "discussed a wide gamut of issues relating to our partnership. Updated each other on important regional concerns".

Expanding global access to vaccines was another topic they discussed given India`s position as the world`s largest producer of vaccines, he said.

India is the linchpin in the Quad's initiative to supply 1.2 billion vaccines that was reiterated at the summit of the leaders of the four countries last month in Washington.

Prime Ministers Narendra Modi of India and Scott Morrison of Australia, US President Joe Biden and the then-Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced at their summit that their Vaccine Partnership was on track to expand the capacity of India's Biological E Ltd to produce at least 1 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines by the end of next year.

Price's readout of the meeting between Jaishankar and Blinken also contained the obligatory reference to democracy, which some in India and in the US would latch on to giving it deeper meanings.

It said they discussed "reinforcing their mutual commitments to and support for shared democratic values".

However, despite Biden's statements making his administration the global beacon of democracy, such references to democracy are missing in readouts of Blinken's meetings with leaders of most countries, especially those that are not democratic.

For example, references to democracy were left out of the India, US, Israel and UAE meeting, likely in deference to the Gulf nation.

It didn't figure in the readout of his recent meetings with Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani or Zayed or Saudi Foreign Ministers Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

Blinken and Jaishankar have been in close contact through phone calls and virtual meetings and have met in London in May, in Washington also in May and in New Delhi in July.

They are expected to meet again this year in Washington along with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin for the 2+2 ministerial meeting of the defence and foreign policy heads of the two nations.

India and UK on Friday agreed on the need to ensure that Afghan territory should not be used to threaten or attack any country or to shelter or train terrorists.

This statement was issued after India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held bilateral talks with the visiting UK Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss and discussed several issues including strengthening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and countering terrorism and radical extremism.

A statement issued by External Affairs Ministry said that Mr Jaishankar and Ms Truss discussed regional and international issues of mutual interest while sharing their commitment to a multi-polar world and multilateralism.

"They agreed to strengthen cooperation in West Asia and the Indo-Pacific, on countering terrorism and radical extremism, and addressing emerging challenges in the cyber and space domains," the statement said.

"On Afghanistan, the need for full, safe and unhindered access for humanitarian assistance was discussed, as also the need for Afghan territory not be used to threaten or attack any country or to shelter or train terrorists, or to plan or to finance terrorist attacks," it added.

Both Ministers undertook a detailed review of the Roadmap 2030 launched during the India-UK Virtual Summit held on May 4, 2021.

On Monday, Jaishankar held "very productive talks" with Alternate Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid duringh which the two countries agreed to resume negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) from next month with an aim to conclude the long-pending deal by next June.

Based out of Gurugram, ISA has 124 countries as its members and aims to harness solar energy to reduce dependency on fossil fuels.&nbsp;

Israel's energy minister Karine Elharrar will officially sign the agreement on her country's accession to the International Solar Alliance in the presence of Israeli Foreign minister Yair Lapid and Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar.

ISA was launched by Indian PM Modi and the then French President, Francois Hollande, at the Paris climate summit in 2015.&nbsp;

The fourth assembly of the alliance is on October 20 and will see an address by US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, European Commission Executive Vice President for the European Green Deal, Frans Timmermans.

India's external affairs minister, Dr S Jaishankar, is in Israel currently, his first visit in his current capacity. On the first day, he met members of the Israeli chambers of commerce and interacted with the Indian Jewish Community and Indologists.&nbsp;

During his address to the Indian Jewish community, he highlighted, the role of Jews in India — David Sassoon was the founder of Bank of India, one of the lawyers who defended Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 2016 was David Erulkar, who was a Jew, Dr Jerusha Jhirad who was awarded Padma Shri was a Jew.&nbsp;

He said, "People of my generation grew up with the signature tune of All India Radio that was composed by a Jewish exile in India, Walter Kauffman".

The EAM started day one by paying homage to the Indian soldiers who died in World War One by visiting the Indian cemetery at Talpiot.&nbsp;

Indian soldiers played a key role in the Battle of Haifa in 1918. During the 2018 visit of the then Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, the name of Teen Murti Chowk was formally rechristened as Teen Murti Haifa Chowk.&nbsp;

The three statues at the chowk in the heart of Central Delhi belong to the Hyderabad, Jodhpur, and Mysore Lancers, who were part of the British India forces who helped win the battle of Haifa.

The visit is part of increased engagement between the Indian and Israeli governments.&nbsp;

A spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy in India, Muhamed Heib, said, "The visit will mark the beginning of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and it will include high-level meetings. We look forward to a successful visit during which agreements will be signed, and the strategic partnership between the two countries will be strengthened".

At the meet, EAM said, "I know, in principle we have agreed on mutual recognition of our vaccination certification process. And while we are working that out, in the interim Israel would all people, having Covishield vaccines to travel to Israel"

He also welcomed Israel starting the process of joining the India based international solar alliance which currently has 124 member countries. Lauding the development, EAM Jaishankar said,"pleasure to see Israel joining the international solar alliance. You bring lot of value to the table and as we approach COP26" in Glasgow.

Israel's energy minister Karine Elharrar officially signed the agreement on her country's accession to the International Solar Alliance in the presence of Israeli Foreign minister Yair Lapid and Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar. The three&nbsp;statues at the chowk in the heart of central Delhi belong to the Hyderabad, Jodhpur and Mysore Lancers who were part of the British India forces who helped win the battle of Haifa.
