External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday said that the movement of the Indian Ambassador and the Embassy staff from war-torn Afghanistan to India was a "difficult and complicated exercise" as he thanked those who cooperated and facilitated the efforts.

Jaishankar, who is in the US on a four-day visit to attend a number of UN Security Council events, including a briefing on terrorism that will be held under India's presidency of the powerful body, took to Twitter to share details about New Delhi's efforts to get Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan Rudrendra Tandon and the Embassy staff out from Kabul.

Jaishankar's visit to New York is taking place in the backdrop of the Taliban's rapid onslaught in Afghanistan and the issue is likely to figure in his talks with UN officials.

India-Iran commercial ties were traditionally dominated by the Indian import of Iranian crude oil. In 2018-19, India imported US $12.11 bn worth of crude oil from Iran. But following the end of the Significant Reduction Exemption (SRE) period on 2 May 2019, India suspended importing crude from Iran.

During the talks, Afghanistan was also discussed between the 2 sides. HK Modi, another businessman in the country said, "last two&nbsp;days have been the most turbulent days of my experience in Durban. The kind of rampant looting, vandalism and absolute lawlessness, and anarchy&nbsp;that has been going around."

Asha Thakur, a second-generation&nbsp;born in South Africa said, "protests have escalated at an unmanageable level. looting and violence are the norms. Indian business in Durban and Pietermaritzburg have been looted."

The protests are expected to impact the economy of the country. According to estimates, 129, 000 jobs are at risk due to&nbsp;ongoing unrest.

Jaishankar talks to foreign minister Pandor as violence in South Africa escalates

Even as the situation in Afghanistan deteriorates as the Taliban makes territorial gains, India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam&nbsp;Jaishankar has said a seizure of power by violence cannot be legitimised.&nbsp;

Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation-Afghanistan contact group meeting, Jaishankar&nbsp;said, "The challenge is to act seriously and sincerely on these beliefs. Because there are forces at work with a very different agenda."

"The world is against seizure of power by violence and force. It will not legitimise such actions" he added.

The situation in Afghanistan remains precarious. Earlier today, it emerged that the Taliban has captured the crucial Spin Boldak crossing with Pakistan. Fall of Spin Boldak is seen as symbolic in terms of the Taliban's gains.

Taliban officials said on Friday the Sunni Muslim insurgent group had taken control of 85 per cent&nbsp;of territory in Afghanistan, as the United States and others withdrew the bulk of their troops after 20 years of fighting.

While Russia dismissed any closeness to Islamabad, many in Delhi saw an attempt by Moscow to hyphenate India and Pakistan. Lavrov's 2021 visit to Pakistan was the first visit by the Russian foreign minister to Islamabad since 2012.

St. Ketevan attained martyrdom in 1624 in Shiraz, Iran and her relics were brought to India by the Portuguese. Georgian embassy is keen that the relics be transferred to Georgia.

Georgian medieval epic poem, written in the 12th century - The Knight in the Panther's Skin has references to India. It is written by Shota Rustaveli, who is considered the country's national poet. It is believed that Panchtantra has influenced Georgian folk legends.

The Indian embassy in Armenia is concurrently accredited to Georgia while Georgia has an embassy in Delhi.

India will be supporting projects in Kenya that call for creating 500,000 new affordable homes, scaling up universal health coverage, 100 per cent&nbsp;food security, and enhancing the country's manufacturing to 20 per cent&nbsp;of GDP by 2022.

The joint statement said, "India will further build upon its partnership" vis-a-vis the programmes and also when it comes to development partnership in various fields in a whole host of sectors.&nbsp;India has been offering 400 scholarships to Kenyans annually as part of its development partnership and capacity building projects.

What stood out was the use of "Indo-Pacific" term in the joint statement, a term which is increasingly being used and this time by an African country.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The joint statement said, "the two sides held extensive exchanges on global and regional issues including the security situation in the Indo-Pacific region and the Horn of Africa."

Indo-Pacific is geographically seen&nbsp;as a region spanning from the east coast of&nbsp;Africa&nbsp;to the&nbsp;Pacific&nbsp;island states, a region that is the main driver of global economic growth.

On counter-terror, the statement said both sides&nbsp;"expressed their concern at the growing radicalisation and the increase in international terrorism and violent extremism in parts of Africa and Asia".

It highlighted,"As maritime neighbours, India and Kenya recognised the importance of ensuring through shared endeavours greater security, safety and prosperity of the Indian Ocean region. They also noted that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations are a common threat to humanity."

Earlier in the day, EAM participated in the inauguration of the newly renovated Mahatma Gandhi memorial Library at the University of Nairobi. The renovation was undertaken through financial support provided by the Indian government.

Calling the "rise of modern Africa is not just a noble sentiment" but a "long-awaited expectation", EAM at the university said, "It is only when this continent of more than a billion people takes its rightful place that the full diversity of our planet will find proper expression. It is then that we can justifiably declare that the world is truly multipolar."

India has multiple times extended its support for an African seat at the United Nations Security Council. Currently, both India and Kenya are non-permanent members of the UNSC.&nbsp;

India's external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar will be in Italy's Matera on June 29 for the G20 Foreign Minister's (FM) meet. Italy is the host of the G20 grouping this year and will hold the leader's summit in Rome on October 30 and 31.&nbsp;

On May 27, Indian Navy Ship INS Shardul had reached Kochi with 270 Metric Tonnes (MT) of liquid medical oxygen from Kuwait and UAE including 11 International Standardisation Organisation (ISO) containers, two semi-trailers and 1200 Oxygen cylinders. The resolution "ensuring respect for international human rights law and humanitarian law in occupied Palestinian territory including East Jerusalem and in Israel", was adopted with 24 countries voting in favor and nine against at the 47 members strong Geneva-headquartered UN body.

Malki highlighted that "the resolution is not an aberration to the human rights council. It is a by-product of extensive multilateral consultations. It is the consolidation of years and thorough investigations into and reporting on Israel's grave violations by states, UN experts, human rights treaty bodies and international organizations, without accountability measures".

India had welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas at UNHRC, which was announced last month after 11 days of violent clashes from both sides. The situation escalated after violence in Jerusalem and the possible eviction of Palestinians in the Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan neighborhood. US has a stockpile of 60 million Astra Zeneca vaccine doses and also Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson &amp; Johnson COVID-19 vaccines.&nbsp;

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has started his week long trip to the United States, where he has been scheduled to meet the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and also hold a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Speaking at the discussion on "peace and security in Africa" at the key United Nations body, India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar said, "it is a matter of continuing regret for us that the voice of Africa is not given its proper due in..most pivotal (UN) Institution".

He extended his support for the common African Position as mentioned in the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.&nbsp;

Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration, both call for at least two&nbsp;permanent and five&nbsp;to two&nbsp;non-permanent UNSC seats to be given to African countries at the high table.

Pointing out how New Delhi reached out to Africa which is "too is being tested by the COVID-19 pandemic", he said India has supplied "medicines, vaccines and health-related equipment to 42 African countries".

He explained that India will "support peace and security, help address root causes of conflict and be a reliable partner in fighting the pandemic."

During his address, he mentioned the joint India-South Africa proposal at the World Trade Organization which calls for a waiver on Covid&nbsp;vaccines so that they can be mass-produced. The US recently announced that it will support the proposal, with more and more developed countries extended support for a discussion on it.

India, which shares traditional and historical ties with the continent has been involved in 189 projects in 41 African countries via its concessional loans.

It has given 43,000 education and training slots in the last five&nbsp;years and is involved in digital education and health programs with 17 African countries.&nbsp;

EAM Jaishankar said, "India will respond to the priorities of Africa, as defined by Africans themselves. Our support is without conditionalities and in line with African expectations."

India has been involved in peacekeeping in the continent under the United Nations Umbrella. Indian Peacekeeping troops are present in South Sudan, Somalia, Abeyi, Western Sahara, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

As part of "establishing capabilities and capacities", New Delhi has partnered in the establishment of defense institutions in Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Tanzania with its training teams being deployed in Botswana, Namibia, Uganda, Lesotho, Zambia, Mauritius, Seychelles and Tanzania.

The France-India-Australia trilateral was launched in September 2020 at foreign secretaries' level with three joint priorities: maritime security, environment, and multilateralism.

During the meeting, Blinken reaffirmed India's important role when it comes to the climate crisis and as a leading partner in the Indo-Pacific, he said. "They also discussed ways to deepen cooperation in multilateral fora, including at the UN Security Council and as a G7 guest country," Price said, adding that the two leaders looked forward to continue the US-India cooperation on the full range of bilateral and global issues. Earlier, Jaishankar described it as a very good meeting. "Among the many subjects we discussed was first and foremost the strong support we are getting from the United States on dealing with the COVID situation. We are very, very appreciative of that," he told reporters in a joint appearance with Blinken in London. "We also discussed how our collaboration could help globally in expanding vaccination capabilities," he said after their bilateral meeting. In his brief remarks, Blinken recognised the contribution of India when the United States was facing the COVID-19 crisis. "We remember so well when India came to our assistance in the early days of Covid in a very important and powerful way," Blinken said.
