<p>"When we look at India at 75, we are not just looking at the 75 completed years, but 25 years ahead. What have we done, where have we faltered?" he said while talking about India at 75.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Weighing in on the future of the country, Jaishankar said in the next 25 years, India should be at the next stage of globalisation, adding that the nation&nbsp;should be about capability building.&nbsp;</p>

Jaishankar: Better to engage with world on own terms than try to please it

<p>Poland's foreign minister, Zbigniew Rau, who is on an India visit, has briefed PM Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Poland, which borders Ukraine, has been majorly impacted by the Russian invasion, leading to a large number of refugees.</p>

<p>Calling the Russian invasion of Ukraine "brutal," Poland's foreign minister, Zbigniew Rau, addressing a press conference in Delhi, said, "the burning issue of Russian aggression on Ukraine was one of the key topics that was touched upon during my conversation with PM Modi as well as with minister Jaishankar."</p>

<p>He explained, "while Poland and India might differ in how we reacted to the war in Ukraine, we believe that we can still build on common values and interests, including the promotion of a credible, rules-based global order and effective multilateralism that we share."</p>

<p>According to UN estimates of the 5.2 million people who have left Ukraine, Poland has taken the maximum number of around 2,922,978. His visit comes at a time when Poland is the chair of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).</p>

<p>The visiting Polish Minister stressed that "Russia's irresponsive actions in Ukraine are blatantly" violating the world order from which both Poland and India have benefited so much in the past decades. It also had serious implications for global security, including energy and food security, with the consequences both regions are yet to deal with".</p>

<p>Since the Russian invasion, commodity prices have increased globally--from wheat to sunflower oil.</p>

<p>This has led to high inflation, especially in Asia and Africa, affecting many.</p>

<p>In response to a WION question on how he sees India's role in halting the current crisis, FM Rau said, "I must tell you I had a very fruitful conversation concerning the Russian aggression against Ukraine with your foreign minister. I was really impressed by the way we conducted this conversation," adding, "I can assure you that with India we share the same values and the same commitment to rules based global order." He highlighted that "no doubt in my mind that our assessment of the situation is close. Both Poland and India have had tragic experience with foreign imperialism and it's very difficult not to see the present aggression against Ukraine as an attempt to restore Russian imperialism."</p>

<p>This is the first foreign ministerial visit from Poland in 2013. He also called for the conclusion of a trade and investment agreement. During the visit, he met members of the Polish India business forum and addressed the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service.</p>

Under the Vaccine Maitri Initiative, the Indian government gifted 5.5 lakh doses of the Made-In-India Covishield vaccines to Bhutan, which enabled it to vaccinate its adult population during the month of March-April 2021.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In response to mounting criticism and questions about the evacuation and future study of Indian medical students from war-torn Ukraine, Indian external affairs minister S Jaishankar said the delay was due to the Ukrainian government's ambiguous political comments.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The minister stated that the Ukrainian authorities' initial message was that the developing crisis was "manageable" and that everything was under control, which made Indian students hesitant to leave the country.</p>

<p>"We kept in touch with Ukrainian authorities and even universities on a regular basis."</p>

<p>"With some of the universities, we were really frustrated," he stated.</p>

<p>EAM Jaishankar tells Parliament that Indian medical students who have been evacuated from Ukraine will be given a one-year reprieve.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In response to specific concerns highlighted by the Opposition, Jaishankar stated that India is in talks with Poland, Romania, Kazakhstan, and Hungary to complete medical education for Ukraine returnees.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Tuesday, four union ministers - Hardeep Singh Puri, Kiren Rijiju, Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Gen VK Singh - briefed the house on the evacuation of Indians under Operation Ganga. <p>“I was reading a report&nbsp;that in the month of March&nbsp;Europe has bought 15 per cent more oil and gas from Russia than it did the month before. If you look at the major buyers of oil and gas from Russia, you will find most of them in Europe,” Jaishankar said.</p>

<p>“We get the bulk of our energy supplies from the Middle East, 7.5 – 8 per cent from the US and it was less than a per cent from Russia earlier,” he added.</p>

<p>Defending India’s position, Jaishankar said, “When oil prices go up it is natural for countries to go out into the market and look for what are the good deals for their people. I am pretty sure if we wait two or three months, and actually look at who are the big buyers of Russian gas and oil, I suspect the list will not be very different from what it used to be, and I suspect we won’t be on the top 10 on that list.”&nbsp;</p>

Responding to a question, he said that India has called for immediate cessation of violence and end to all hostilities. "We stand for peace, we believe that there is no other way than a return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy. We recognize that the global order is anchored on international law, UN charter and respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states and we call for humanitarian access to a conflict situation."<br />

He also said, "We have given 90 tonnes of humanitarian assistance so far and we are looking to providing more, especially medicines."</p>

Responding to a question by MP Naresh Gujral on Indian trade with Russia especially payment in rupees, Jaishankar said that because of the emerging problems with Russia, the government is examining various aspects by the group composed of various Ministries under the aegis of the Finance Ministry to examine the issue of payment.<br />

Replying to the query of Gujral on crude oil import, he said, "we import less than one per cent of crude oil from Russia. Many western countries are importing 15 to 20 times more than what we import."</p>

To a follow-up question about the growing relations between Russia and China, Jaishankar said, the government is aware of the changes in international relations. "We monitor it, we obviously assess it from our own national perspective and fashion our strategy in accordance with those developments," he said.<br />

Jaishankar also informed the House that when Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Vladimir Putin thrice and to Volodymyr Zelensky twice, the evacuations of Indians was the priority, but the major part of the conversations was on what we could do to encourage a cessation of hostility through the dialogue and diplomacy.</p>

<p>"That's why we need freedom of navigation ... A security architecture that we have to build together,"&nbsp;Borrell said.</p>

<p>In 2020, India's&nbsp;EAM had participated at the MSC. The conference has emerged as one of the most well know forums that deals with international security issues and this time comes amid the eastern Europe crisis and Russian military buildup at Ukraine's border.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It&nbsp;will also be the first high-level visit from Delhi to Germany since the new government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz took charge. The occasion is expected to provide the first in-person meeting between EAM Jaishankar and Germany's new foreign minister Annalena Baerbock.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Germany is the president of G7 countries this year&nbsp;and for the last three&nbsp;years, India has been regularly invited at the G7 by the host country.</p>

<p>In 2019, France had invited India for the summit, in 2020 the then US President Donald Trump had announced his keenness to invite&nbsp;New Delhi but the summit never took place. Last year the&nbsp;UK had invited India for the summit at Carbis Bay, Cornwall. PM Modi had taken part at the G7 Cornwall meet virtually due to the COVID-19 crisis.</p>

<p>The EAM's next stop will be France where he will participate in the mega&nbsp;meet on Indo Pacific-Paris Forum on February 22.</p>

<p>The meet comes under the six-month French presidency of the Council of the European Union.&nbsp;</p>

<p>French foreign minister Jean Yves Le Drian last month announced that invite has been extended to EAM Jaishankar and said, "it will be first time during European presidency there will be an event focused on Indo-Pacific...", adding, "for a long time we have had a very special relationship with India".&nbsp;</p>

<p>High Representative of the EU for foreign affairs Josep Borrell will also be in the French capital for the forum. The foreign ministerial Paris Forum on Indo-Pacific will see "concretisation of principles we share on the respect for law and harmonious development and post-COVID-19&nbsp;recovery".</p>

<p>Foreign ministers of European Union members and many Indo-Pacific countries will be present at the forum.</p>

<p>The invite has also been extended to Australian FM&nbsp;Marise Payne. Remember, France-Australia ties had suffered a major blow over AUKUS nuclear deal pact between Washington, London and Canberra.</p>

<p>While France termed it a "stab in the back", Australia highlighted worries over increased Chinese aggressiveness in the region. The visit will be an occasion to repair the damage to the ties.</p>

<p>The visit to Europe comes after EAM's Asia visit. The EAM visited Qatar on Wednesday and is currently in Australia for Quad foreign ministers meet and engagement with his Australian counterpart.</p>

<p>Later he will travel&nbsp;to the Philippines, it is the first such visit by an Indian foreign minister to the country in a decade&nbsp;and comes in the backdrop of the BrahMos deal.</p>
