Use of facial recognition systems, a modern way of security, was banned in Italy on Monday. The country's privacy watchdog, Data Protection Agency, chided two municipalities for experimenting with facial recognition systems and ‘smart glasses'. It ordered prohibition of its use until a specific law is adopted which it said may happen only at the end of next year, reported Euro News.

Facial recognition systems help confirm a user's identity whereas smart glasses can prove to be helpful for visually impaired people as they can benefit from AI embedded in it. These devices can extract different kinds of information from images and then speak it back to users.

However, there is an exception to the imposed ban. If the use of the tech is required to support judicial investigations or fight crimes, these biometric data-based systems can still be used. The agency in a statement said, “The moratorium arises from the need to regulate eligibility requirements, conditions and guarantees relating to facial recognition, in compliance with the principle of proportionality."

Expressing concerns over the security of these systems, the watchdog highlighted that under EU and Italian law, the processing of personal data by public bodies using video devices is generally allowed on only public interest grounds. It further suggested if municipalities want to use these systems, they will have to meet “urban security pacts” with central government representatives.

Tensions increased between France and Italy on Wednesday over the fate of an NGO ship carrying 234 migrants who had been rescued in the Mediterranean, with Paris describing the Italian government's reluctance to allow the ship to dock as "unacceptable."

It was the most recent instance of a dispute in Europe in recent years about where to land migrants who had been rescued while trying to cross into the continent from North Africa. Italy has grown increasingly upset at having to take in the majority of those saved.

The dispute is focused on the Ocean Viking, a charity ship that left Sicilian waters for France after trying in vain to land in Italy since late October.

The ship, which is operated by the European humanitarian organisation SOS Mediterranee and is flying the Norwegian flag, has asked France to accept it and is headed toward Corsica by Thursday.

"It's a total blockage on the part of the Italians," SOS Med director Sophie Beau told AFP, saying it had lodged 43 official requests with no response.

Along the northern coast of Sicily, the ship is headed for Sardinia and, maybe, France, where the charity has also requested port access.

It "still had no official response" from French officials as of Wednesday morning, according to Beau.

Even yet, Antonio Tajani, the foreign minister of Italy, stated in an interview that France had offered Marseille as a port of safety, as did the late-Tuesday statement from the office of Giorgia Meloni, the country's new far-right premier.

Paris, however, has not confirmed this, and on Wednesday, government spokesman Olivier Veran stated that the Ocean Viking was still in Italian territorial seas.

He deemed "unacceptable" the "current attitude of the Italian government, notably its declarations and refusal to accept the ship."

The Ocean Viking is the final of four NGO ships that have rescued more than 1,000 migrants who were stranded at sea in dilapidated boats during the past two weeks, the most recent of tens of thousands of people who have sailed for Europe in recent years.

Tensions mount between France and Italy over migrant rescue ship

Tunisian authorities are trying to repatriate a four-year-old girl who was forced by her parents to take a migrant boat alone to Italy.

The girl, Linda, landed on Lampedusa island on October 17 after undertaking a 26-hour journey over the Mediterranean Sea on a crowded wooden boat, which carried 70 other asylum seekers from Tunisia.

Tunisian MP Majdi Karbai said that the girl was doing fine and her parents were arrested and given a travel ban for abandoning a minor.

“Linda is doing well, and she is in a community centre for children in Palermo, after having been transferred from Lampedusa to a community in the province of Agrigento,” Karbai was quoted as saying by the Guardian newspaper.

“She’s constantly asking about her parents and when she will be able to see them again.”

According to reports, the girl’s parents were later released from jail after the news of the girl’s arrival. They might be charged with human trafficking.

“Her parents are in Tunisia and Tunisian authorities [on 26 October] imposed a travel ban on them. They would prefer to repatriate Linda, but the procedures are not so easy as the girl is under the legal protection of a local guardian,” he added.

The new right-wing administration in Italy signalled on Monday that it would crack down on illegal rave gatherings, with organisers facing jail terms of up to six years.

The move came after a weekend Halloween party near the northern city of Modena, which drew over 1,000 guests from Italy and abroad and resulted in complaints about noise and its effect on local traffic.

"We have shown that the state won't turn a blind eye and fail to act when faced with law-breaking," Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told a news conference, saying Italy needed to tighten the rules to bring it into line with European neighbours.

The larger rave that took place in Viterbo last year, when two reported deaths and damage to a natural beauty spot were reported, was referenced by Meloni, whose government took office in October on a promise to be strict on law and order.

"The impression that the Italian state has given in recent years is one of being lax when it comes to respecting the rules and the law," she said.

According to plans approved by her government, anyone responsible for throwing such events may eventually spend between three and six years in prison and have the equipment used at the raves seized.

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said at a news conference that the new offence would apply to unauthorised gatherings of at least 50 individuals that endanger public health, safety, or order.

The Modena celebration, which was supposed to go until Tuesday, was quietly put to a stop at noon on Monday when partygoers and the police who had gathered there decided to turn off the music and leave.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Sunday (October 23) marked formal launch of her new government in a handover ceremony at the prime minister's office. Meloni, who will now lead Italy's most right-wing government since Second World War, is taking charge at a time when Italy's debt-hit economy is heading into recession once again.

Meloni joined outgoing premier Mario Draghi for a handover ceremony at Chigi Palace, the Prime Minister’s seat in Rome.

After almost 90 minutes of private talks, the pair smiled broadly as Draghi, a former European Central Bank chief, symbolically handed over to Meloni a small bell used in cabinet debates.

Draghi had taken a tough stand against Russia in the wake of Ukraine invasion. Meloni has pledged support for Ukraine, but her coalition partner Berlusconi has repeatedly undercut her by blaming Ukraine for the war.

Meloni's party has neo-fascist roots, but she sought to project a moderate image during the election campaign, dropping previous anti-EU rhetoric and pledging to keep Italy at the heart of European and Western institutions.

Subsequently, the three were charged with “obscene acts in a public place” and the police referred them to the public prosecutor’s office.

In Italy's Naples, a columbarium has collapsed, spilling out coffins some of which are left hanging precariously in the air.

A columbarium is a burial structure that holds niches for coffins and niches for funeral urns to be stored.

Dramatic pictures of the scene show the coffins hanging on by a thread out of their niches. They can potentially fall at any moment, spilling out their departed residents. This forced authorities to cordon off the area.

This happened at a four-storey funerary building called the Chapel of the Resurrection. As per reports dozens of graves have been destroyed. As per a Guardian report quoting Vincenzo Santagada, a Naples councillor "the collapse was preceded by a bang and a dense cloud of dust."

Santagada said that "As an administration, we are taking care of all the necessary formalities."

Families of those buried in the Chapel of the Resurrection held a protest on Tuesday.

As per La Prensa Latina, this is the second such collapse of a cemetery this year. Earlier, on January 5 of this year, another cemetery this one in Poggioreale, which is also the biggest in Naples had suffered a similar accident, which led to the destruction of around 300 graves. The cause of this was a massive ground collapse due to work on a subterranean metro line.

Following the January incident, authorities in Naples Prosecutor's Office had reportedly ordered the closure of the Poggioreale cemetery. An investigation is underway and 20 people are facing an inquiry over their potential involvement in the metro construction work that caused the accident.

For the first time, scientists have found microplastics in breast milk, raising concerns over potential health risks for infants.

Microplastics, as the name implies, are tiny plastic particles which are less than five millimetres (0.2 inches) in diametre—smaller than the standard pearl used in jewellery.

They cause pollution by entering ecosystems from a variety of sources like cosmetics, clothing, food packaging, and industrial processes.

Though first discovered in 2004, microplastics have permeated everywhere—in deep oceans; Arctic snow and Antarctic ice; in shellfish, table salt, drinking water. These tiny pieces could take decades or more to degrade fully.

However, the discovery of these tiny particles in breast milk has started scientists.

According to the Guardian, microplastics were found in the breast milk samples taken from 34 healthy mothers, a week after giving birth in Rome, Italy. The scientists detected microplastics in 75 per cent of them.

The study, which was published in Polymers journal, discovered microplastics composed of polyethene, PVC and polypropylene.

Plastics contain harmful chemicals, such as phthalates, which have been found in breast milk before.

In their study, the researchers recorded the mothers’ consumption of food and drink in plastic packaging and of seafood, as well as the use of plastic-containing personal hygiene products. But they did not find any link with the presence of microplastics.

This suggests the ubiquitous presence of microplastics in the environment makes human exposure inevitable, the researchers said.

“So, the proof of microplastics’ presence in breast milk increases our great concern for the extremely vulnerable population of infants,” Dr Valentina Notarstefano, from Università Politecnica delle Marche, in Ancona, Italy, said.

In the backdrop of a series of leaks and blasts that rocked the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, the Italian government has upped its surveillance on underwater cables, according to a report by Reuters.

In the backdrop of a series of leaks and blasts that rocked the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, the Italian government has upped its surveillance on underwater cables, according to a report by Reuters. The threat of underwater energy and telecommunications cables being targeted has grown manifold in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Back in 2020, NATO ministers had discussed the threat of Russian submarines causing potential damage to the underwater internet cables by cutting or tapping them. To get ahead of the curve, the Italian Navy in July signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the country's largest private cable provider viz. Sparkle to ensure that undersea internet cables are protected. Read more: Nord Stream leak: Powerful blasts recorded in leakage areas “The Italian Navy is one of the main pillars of national maritime cluster and works daily to defend and support it. We have professional competences and skills to perform submarine operations and today, also thanks to Sparkle, an important process begins that gives the right attention to the underwater dimension of Italy, a maritime country with 8,000 km of coastline, at the centre of the Mediterranean Sea,” Chief of the Italian Navy, Admiral Enrico Credendino Credendino was quoted as saying after the signing of the MoU. The Italian Navy intends to use submarines to monitor the cables and ensure that no untoward incident happens around them. The Italian Navy is building four upgraded NFS (Near Future Submarine) to level up its capabilities and replace its older Sauro-class vessels. Modern technology and increased espionage capabilities have allowed enemy parties to use underwater as another frontier to execute their deceitful plans. The internet cables laid down in the Atlantic Ocean in recent times entered the Mediterranean Sea via the Strait of Gibraltar. They exit through the Suez Canbal and run to Asia and West Asia. According to experts, these cables, which carry over 95 per cent of the world’s internet volume are extremely critical and require increased surveillance. As reported extensively by WION, Nord Stream 1 and 2 are major pipelines that transmit gas from western Siberia in Russia to Europe. The pipelines have been a major focus of geopolitical tension as Russia chose to reduce gas supply as retaliation to western sanctions in the wake of the Ukraine war. The recent leaks have started a blame game among the stakeholders. While Russia remains adamant that is not responsible for the blasts or leaks, the West accuses Kremlin of sabotage. The triumph of a right-wing alliance in Italy's election has raised concern among LGBTQ+ community, who fear nationalist leader Giorgia Meloni could adopt anti-gay policies and set back their efforts to boost equality.

Italy: LGBTQ+ community worry over basic rights as far-right triumphs in election

The LGBT community is worried after Italy's right-wing group won the elections. Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy, a nationalist party, won the elections with a fair majority.

In a conversation with Reuters, Fabrizio Marrazzo, leader of the Gay Party said that there are very real fears amongst the community now about the weakening of civil liberties under the new administration.

Marrazzo said, "the League and partly Brothers of Italy have in their manifestos things that are quite negative for our community, like stressing the importance of protecting only the traditional family," Reuters reported.

However, Meloni has refuted claims that her conservative party intends to challenge and repeal any current Italian laws governing same-sex relationships and abortion rights. She said, "What is there, stays there."

Italy: 'Very real fears' for LGBT community after Meloni's win as the new prime minister

Giorgia Meloni is all set to become Italy's first woman prime minister at the head of its most right-wing government since World War II after leading a conservative alliance.

Italy General Election 2022: Giorgia Meloni set to become Italy's first woman Prime Minister

Italy is all set to get a far-right government. Giorgia Meloni-led 'Brothers of Italy' has claimed 43% of the vote and is on track to come to power. The development has unnerved many European leaders. Why? Molly Gambhir tells you.

Gravitas: Italy set to get a 'far-right' government

Fascist forces worldwide, including in India, are bound to welcome Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party being voted to power in the elections held on September 25. Meloni’s party has its roots in the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement (MSI) formed by supporters of the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini after World War II. Founded in 2012, in four years, the party’s vote has grown from 4 per cent in 2018 to 26 in 2022.

Meloni is on record as having told a French TV channel that “Mussolini was a good politician, in that everything he did, he did for Italy”. She leads a party that is deeply divisive and, in its strident nationalism, has been railing against the European Union, mass migration, Islamist violence and LGBT rights.

These children of Mussolini have set off alarm bells ringing in EU capitals, which were not unduly disturbed over the conservative right’s recent electoral victory in Sweden. Meloni has been dubbed the “new Mussolini” and would be leading the most extreme right-wing government in Italy and, perhaps, Europe, since the era of Hitler and Mussolini. And, she is perceived as a threat to Italy and Europe, and not only for the fact that neo-Nazi forces would get a big boost with her taking office. With its dangerous lurch to the far right, Italy, an economic power and a G7 member, would be reinforcing neo-fascist and divisive tendencies in Europe; and could emerge as the leading face of the nationalist bloc so far led by Hungary and Poland.

However, while Europe may wring its hands and agonise over the continental scale of the challenge, it may not be able to, or even interested, in defeating the neo-fascist forces that are on the rise.

The critical test that Meloni has to pass, to appease a troubled and crisis-hit Europe in a funk, is to fall in with the West’s line on Ukraine in spite of her opposition to mass migration. That done, as a devout Catholic leading a country which is also Catholic and one with the other Catholic powers in Europe and the Catholic US president in backing Ukraine, the dangers that neo-fascist Meloni’s Italy poses to the liberal democratic order that the West avowedly stands for may even be overlooked.

It would be interesting to see how other major countries, including Russia, Israel and India react to the rise of Mussolini’s children.

WION Spotlight | Sister at the helm of Mussolini’s born-again brotherhood

The political space in Italy is all set to take a “right” turn as the right-wing firebrand leader Giorgia Meloni is tipped to become the next, and first female, prime minister of the European nation.

Meloni's Brothers of Italy party came top in general elections on Sunday (September 25), according to the first exit polls. The party won between 22 per cent and 26 per cent of the vote, according to national broadcaster RAI.

Who is Giorgia Meloni, the right-wing leader set to become Italy's first female prime minister?

Exit polls on Sunday revealed that the right-wing coalition led by Girogia Meloni's Brothers of Italy party appeared poised to win a comfortable win in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

As per the RAI exit poll, the coalition of conservative parties secured between 41 per cent and 45 per cent which is sufficient to endure control in both houses of parliament. The RAI's poll further added that the right-wing would secure nearly 111-131 Senate seats and nearly 227 to 257 seats in the lower house.

If the polls are accurate, Italy would have had its most right-wing government since World War Two, and Meloni would be the first female prime minister of the country.

Meloni downplayed the post-fascist origins of her party and vowed to back Western policies toward Ukraine. However, given the desire to maintain unity in relations with Russia and worries over Italy's increasing debt, the decision is expected to raise alarm bells in Europe's financial markets.

Although Meloni is the leader of the largest coalition in Italy and an obvious choice for victory, it may take a bit longer for the new administration to swear in due to the delayed nature of power transfers.

The result represents a stunning leap for Meloni, whose party received only 4 per cent of the vote in the 2018 national elections but is expected to win with 22 to 26 per cent of the vote this time, Reuters reported.

The next prime minister of Italy will head the nation's 68th administration since 1946 and might face several difficulties, including rising energy prices in Europe.

The results are expected to be announced by early Monday.
