On Sunday, August 7, the Italian army detonated a World War Two bomb that had been found in the low water after the Po, the nation's longest river, dried up. Italy, which has been experiencing the worst drought in 70 years, declared a state of emergency last month for districts around the Po, which produces about a third of the nation's agricultural output.

An old World War Two bomb weighing 1,000 pounds was exploded by the army near the little northern village of Borgo Virgilio, which is close to Mantua. Colonel Marco Nasi said, "The bomb was found by fishermen on the bank of the Po river due to a decrease in water levels caused by drought."

In a statement, the army claimed that around 3,000 residents of the Borgo region had to be evacuated in order for the operation to be carried out safely. In addition, the area's airspace was closed, and transportation on a nearby state road and train as well as along that section of the river was restricted.

Borgo Virgilio mayor Francesco Aporti said, "At first, someone said they would not move, but in the last few days, we think we have convinced everyone." Between 0700 and 0900 GMT, bomb disposal specialists pulled the fuse from the U.S.-made device, which was packed with 240 kilogrammes of explosive.

The device was then moved by the bomb squads and destroyed in a quarry in the municipality of Medole while being escorted by local police. The army stated that the decontamination process was completed around 1400 GMT.

Canadian singer and songwriter Justin Bieber recently returned to the stage in Italy at the Lucca Summer Festival, marking his first performance in nearly two months after he had to cancel several shows following his Ramsay Hunt syndrome diagnosis, which causes partial facial paralysis. According to Fox News, Bieber appeared on Sunday night to give an energetic performance to his Italian fans who tweeted clips of Bieber dancing shirtless in the spotlight while performing songs from his catalogue of hits.

It seems like the 28-year-old singer is on the mend as his tour website has updated stops to include concerts in Europe before heading to South America in September. He's also set to perform two shows in South Africa, followed by more than a dozen performances in the Middle East, Asia, Australia and New Zealand by the end of the year.

Previously, in June, after cancelling a few shows on his Justice World Tour, Bieber revealed on Instagram last month he’s struggled with movements on the right side of his face, including blinking his eye, moving his nostril, or simply smiling from the right side of his mouth, reported Fox News.

He admitted that he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, and would be taking some time off to assess his medical needs. "For those who are frustrated by my cancellations of the next shows, I’m just physically, obviously, not capable of doing them. This is pretty serious as you can see. I wish this wasn't the case, but obviously, my body is telling me that I’ve got to slow down," he said in a video shared shortly after the diagnosis was revealed.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, Bieber’s wife Hailey suffered "stroke-like" symptoms and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered she had a blood clot in her brain. She then had a patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure procedure performed to mend a hole in her heart that had gone undetected since birth, as per Fox News.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi resigns as crisis intensifies

Italy has been dealing with its worst drought in 70 years. Amid an early Heat Wave and raging wildfires climate change has triggered yet another problem in the European nation. Italy's Marmolada Glacier has suffered another large crack. This comes after a huge chunk of the glacier broke loose earlier in July and killed at least 11 hikers.

Italian PM Mario Draghi submits second resignation to President Mattarella

Italian PM Mario Draghi is expected to offer his resignation today, this after three coalition partners of his unity government refused to back him. Draghi attended his resignation last week as well but president had refused to accept it.

Italy Political Turmoil: PM Mario Draghi is expected to offer his resignation today

Italy's popular Prime Minister Mario Draghi was on the brink on Wednesday after three parties refused to back him, foiling efforts to resolve a crisis now expected to lead to his resignation and snap elections.

Italian media reported that Draghi was now expected to offer his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella on Thursday.

Draghi had made the support of parties across the political spectrum key to ending an impasse that risked destabilising the eurozone's third largest economy just as it struggled with pressing domestic and geopolitical challenges.

The decision by three parties -- Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia, the anti-immigrant League and populist Five Star Movement -- to sit out the vote meant Draghi's bid to revive his beleaguered coalition failed.

Draghi technically won the vote, but was not expected to declare a victory after the parties' snub.

The actions of "irresponsible" parties risked "creating a perfect storm," EU Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said on Twitter, adding that Italy faced "difficult months ahead".

"The centre-right will go down in history as the ones who got rid of Mario Draghi," Francesco Galietti, Policy Sonar analyst, told AFP.

Draghi had warned the Senate that now was not the time for uncertainty, amid a myriad of challenges, from a struggling economy and soaring inflation to the Ukraine war.

Former European Central Bank chief Draghi, who offered his resignation last week, called for "courage, selflessness, credibility" from parliamentarians, asking them: "Are you ready?"

'Day of madness'

In a stern speech given Wednesday morning by the usually softly-spoken Draghi, he said he was prepared to stay -- on the condition the wildly disparate parties agreed a common agenda.

But the League and Forza Italia said it was impossible to recover trust lost after a crisis sparked by Five Star's decision to opt out of a confidence vote last week.

Draghi had been persuaded by Italy's president not to resign immediately, but to reach out to parties first. That attempt on Wednesday ended in failure.

"On this day of madness, parliament decided to turn against Italy," Enrico Letta, head of the centre-left Democratic Party, said on Twitter.

"Italians will show in the ballot box that they are wiser than their representatives," he said.

Polls in the lead up to Wednesday's drama suggested most Italians wanted Draghi, 74, to stay at the helm until the scheduled general election in May next year.

His departure could force the president to dissolve parliament and call elections for September or October.

"Draghi's possible departure would be a significant blow for Italy and for the EU ahead of a difficult winter," said Luigi Scazzieri of the Centre for European Reform.

There is much at stake: a government collapse could worsen social ills in a period of rampant inflation, delay the budget, threaten EU post-pandemic recovery funds and send jittery markets into a tailspin.

'Not easy'

Draghi had said that as an unelected leader he needed the broadest consensus possible to tackle Italy's most pressing issues: from a cost of living crisis and recession worries, to the rollout of key reforms and the Ukraine war.

His coalition had been able "to put aside divisions and come together... for rapid and effective action, for the good of all citizens".

But that had dropped by the wayside as the parties began focusing more on their grassroot supporters ahead of next year's ballot.

Draghi had "scolded his coalition partners for infighting and point-scoring" over the past few months and laid out a government line that "contains measures that either the League or the Five Star Movement firmly oppose", Teneo consultancy's Wolfango Piccoli said in a note.

"By not making any new concessions to either party, Draghi did not make it easy for the League and the Five Star."

Anxious investors were watching closely. The spread -- the difference between 10-year Italian and German treasury bonds -- widened to 215 points by market close.

Wednesday's vote comes a day before the European Central Bank unveils a tool to correct stress in bond markets for indebted eurozone members, such as Italy.

98-year-old man sets another record for being the oldest graduate in Italy, plans to write a novel

Italy held its breath Wednesday as the country's fractious parties furiously debated whether to support popular Prime Minister Mario Draghi at a crucial confidence vote to end a political crisis that could send Italians to snap elections.

Now was not the time for uncertainty within the eurozone's third largest economy, amid a myriad of domestic and geopolitical challenges, from a struggling economy to the Ukraine war, Draghi earlier told the Senate.

"We now need staunch support for the government's programme," he said, calling on parliamentarians for "courage, selflessness, credibility".

"Are you ready? ... You don't owe this answer to me, but to all Italians", he added.

In the stern speech by a usually softly-spoken Draghi, the former leader of the European Central Bank, who offered his resignation last week, said he was prepared to stay -- but on one condition: if the wildly disparate parties pledge anew to a common agenda.

The crisis was sparked by the refusal by the Five Star Movement, a coalition member, to opt out of a confidence vote last week.

Draghi moved immediately to step down, but was persuaded by Italy's president to reach out to parties first.

'Carrot and stick'

Polls suggest most Italians want Draghi, 74, to stay at the helm until the scheduled general election in May next year. His departure could force the president to dissolve parliament and call elections for September or October.

"Draghi did not compromise. He was very tough," Francesco Galietti, Policy Sonar analyst, told AFP.

"The entire speech was stick and carrot – though much more stick than carrot".

There is much at stake: a government collapse could worsen social ills in a period of rampant inflation, delay the budget, threaten EU post-pandemic recovery funds and send jittery markets into a tailspin.

Draghi noted Wednesday that as an unelected leader he needs the broadest consensus possible to tackle Italy's most pressing issues: from a cost of living crisis and recession worries, to the rollout of key reforms and the Ukraine war.

For a long time, he said, his coalition was able "to put aside divisions and come together... for rapid and effective action, for the good of all citizens".

But that had dropped by the wayside as the parties began focusing more on their grassroot supporters ahead of next year's ballot.

'Scolded'

Parties on the centre-left immediately said they would support Draghi at the vote later Wednesday.

The two right-wing parties in the coalition, ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia and Matteo Salvini's anti-immigration League, said they would only remain in Draghi's government if it did not include the Five Star.

Draghi "scolded his coalition partners for infighting and point-scoring" over the past few months and laid out a government line that "contains measures that either the League or the Five Star Movement firmly oppose," Teneo consultancy's Wolfango Piccoli said in a note.

"By not making any new concessions to either party, Draghi did not make it easy for the League and the Five Star".

As the parties fiercely debated in the Senate, it was not clear which way the Five Star would vote.

The populist party may split at the vote, with Forza Italia and the League potentially agreeing to work with the breakaway element.

Once the largest party in parliament, the Five Star Movement has already seen scores of defections as it hews to its radical, anti-establishment side in a bid to reverse plummeting support in the polls.

'Pull ourselves together'

Two-thirds of Italians believe Draghi should stay, according to a Euromedia poll published Tuesday. Nearly 2,000 mayors have signed a petition calling for him to remain PM.

Anxious investors are also watching closely. The spread -- the difference between 10-year Italian and German treasury bonds -- got a boost during Draghi's speech, only to widen to 218.4 as parties squabbled.

Wednesday's vote comes a day before the European Central Bank unveils a tool to correct stress in bond markets for indebted eurozone members.

The tool is meant for countries like Italy -- but as Enrico Letta, head of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) said Tuesday, "if we don't pull ourselves together, it will be harder to ask others to save us".

Italy fate in parties' hands after Draghi asks: 'in or out?'

Algerian President Abdulmadjid Tebboune on Monday (July 18) hailed his country's 'strategic partnership' with Italy during a visit by Italian PM Mario Draghi. Tebboune said Algeria will supply "very big volumes of gas" to Italy through a $4 billion deal. Draghi attended a joint economic summit between the two nations in Algiers.

An official Algerian source said last week that state energy company Sonatrach would increase gas supplies to Italy by a further 4 billion cubic meters (bcm) a year beyond the 21 bcm previously planned.

Algerian gas supplies have become more important for southern Europe in the wake of reduced exports from Russia post its invasion of Ukraine.

Draghi said in Algiers that Italy was a "privileged partner" of Algeria. He also said that both countries would also work to develop renewable energy sources.

Algerian Prime Minister Ayman Benabderrahmane, speaking at the summit conference, said Algeria was Italy's largest trading partner in Africa and the Middle East. Trade between the two countries in 2021 amounting to 8.5 billion US dollars.

Tighter global energy markets in the wake of Ukraine war have come as an opportunity to turn page on years of declining revenues that sharply reduced foreign currency reserves and led to unpopular fiscal tightening.

Italian Premier Mario Draghi's turmoil revives Italy debt crisis fears

Politicians throughout Europe are perspiring as their populations face a heatwave. Five countries in the continent are facing severely high temperatures. An urgent cabinet meeting was convened in the United Kingdom to handle the country’s first-ever ‘extreme red’ warning. A lawmaker in France called the oppressive heat ‘hell.’ The Portuguese prime minister is keeping an eye on threatening woodland fires. Similarly, Southern Europe is already battling the consequences of more scorching summer heat, which scientists say is a result of climate change. The temperatures in Western Europe are expected to reach more than 40 degrees Celsius next week, reported Politico.

The five countries in Europe feeling the effects of the heat are Spain, the UK, France, Italy and Portugal.
