A rescue ship funded by the United Kingdom-based street artist, Banksy was seized by Italy’s coast guard in Lampedusa, on Sunday (March 26). This comes after the MV Louise Michel ship reportedly ignored its instructions to head to Sicily following a migrant rescue operation. Meanwhile, NGO Louise Michel took to Twitter and said that its ship was seized due to the violation of Italy’s new law and it will fight the decision.

A report by Reuters citing the Italian coast guard said that they had ordered the MV Louise Michel ship to dock in Trapani in Sicily following a rescue operation it conducted in Libya’s Search And Rescue area. However, the ship instead went to assist migrants on three other boats in Malta’s Search And Rescue area, adding that they were already en route to the area to assist at the time.

The coast guard had asked the 30-metre-long vessel, Louise Michel, named after a French feminist anarchist, to dock in line with Italy’s new law which established a code of conduct for migrant charity ships, a move which has garnered criticism from the United Nations as well as other humanitarian groups.

In accordance with the new law, Louise Michel was asked to dock in Lampedusa late on Saturday with 178 migrants on board, said the coast guard. It added that they wanted to prevent the boat from taking too many people on board and risking their safety. The NGO Louise Michel has since taken to Twitter and said that 24 hours after they were informed that their ship is being detained they do not have an “official written justification for the detention”.

It added, “We know of dozens of boats in distress right in front of the island at this very moment, yet we are being prevented from assisting. This is unacceptable!” The group also went on to blame European authorities for “rendering assistance” and referred to the several lives lost during two shipwrecks yesterday.

At least 29 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa died when their two boats sank off the coast of Tunisia when they were reportedly trying to cross the Mediterranean to Italy, said the Tunisian authorities, on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Italian coast guard said that in the past 48 hours or so they have coordinated rescue operations for 58 boats and helped more than 3,000 people, reported Reuters.

Italian automaker Ferrari on Monday informed a significant data breach took place at the company and that customers and their personal data may be at risk. A hacker was reportedly able to infiltrate the IT system of the luxury sports car maker and made a call for ransom in return for the data. "We regret to inform you of a cyber incident at Ferrari, where a threat actor was able to access a limited number of systems in our IT environment," Ferrari informed in a statement. The letter dated March 21 added that Ferrari was "recently contacted by a threat actor with a ransom demand related to certain client contact details". However, the Maranello-based company said it was not going to bow in front of the hacker and pay the ransom. ALSO READ | Already expensive Ferrari supercars to get even more costly. It added that the best course of action remains to inform the customers about the potential data exposure and the nature of the incident. The customer information exposed to the hacker includes names, addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers. Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna tried to calm down the situation by stating that no payment details, bank account numbers and/or sensitive payment information had been accessed by the alleged hacker. Ferrari added it had been working with third-party experts to secure its IT systems whilst informing about hiring a leading cybersecurity firm to investigate the matter. The WhatsApp messages shared between Italian politicians and senior health officials when the coronavirus pandemic had just started indicate how they tried to protect the image of the country while appearing to joke about the role of Italy in the spread of the virus in the continent. Italy was the first one to be hit hard by Covid-19 in Europe.

The messages have emerged as the basis of which the prosecutors placed former prime minister Giuseppe Conte, former health minister Roberto Speranza along with 17 other officials under investigation under suspicion of having a role to play in “aggravated culpable epidemic” and manslaughter in relation to the response of the government at the beginning of the pandemic.

Revealed: How Italian leaders joked about country's role in spread of virus at start of pandemic

Three children were found stabbed while two others were injured in their house in Italy, Texas—a tragedy that has shocked the residents.

The incident was reported on Friday after the sheriff's deputies received a call around 4 pm (local time) on South Harris Street, Ellis County Sheriff Deputy Jerry Cozby said, reports ABC News.

After arriving, the officers found all the victims, i.e., children, lying on the floor of the house. While three of them were found dead, two others have been taken to a nearby hospital. The medical condition of the injured is unknown.

The police said they have nabbed a suspect, whose identity has not been revealed. The names of the victims have also not been shared, with the police even refusing to reveal how the suspect was related to them.

However, local media reports claimed that the assailant was the mother of those five children.

“This is a fluid investigation, and we will update you as things evolve,” Deputy Cozby said at the news conference. “Right now, the most important thing are prayers for the family of those involved.”

The sheriff also ruled any danger to the public “at this time.”

Earlier, a statement released by the sheriff’s office said that it believed “this to be an isolated incident that presents no further threat to the Italy Community.”

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services in a statement expressed shock at the tragedy, saying that they are assisting the officials with the investigation.

"We are shocked by this incomprehensible tragedy, and already working with law enforcement to investigate how this happened, and why," they said.

Three children stabbed, two others injured in Texas

The Italian police arrested the country’s most-wanted mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro after a coded note or pizzini (small pieces of papers that Denaro used to deliver his hand-typed instructions) was found in his older sister’s house. Denaro who has also been described as “the last godfather of the Sicilian mafia” was arrested earlier this year, as per media reports citing court documents and the arrest warrant.

Additionally, Rosalia (Rosetta) Messina Denaro was also arrested on Friday (March 3) for allegedly helping her brother to evade arrest for nearly three decades now and acting as a “cashier” of the “family”, reported the Guardian. The 67-year-old was detained in Sicily on mafia membership charges said the local police in a 57-page arrest warrant.

Her brother who until January was Italy’s, most-wanted man was caught in Palermo on January 16 outside a private clinic for cancer patients where he was receiving treatment under the fake name of Andrea Bonafede. Reportedly, more than 100 members of the armed forces were involved in the arrest.

According to the warrant, the 60-year-old’s arrest came after police found a coded note inside the leg of an aluminium chair at Rosalia’s residence in the western Sicilian town of Castelvetrano. The analysis of the note which seemed like a random mix of letters, signs, and words also revealed that the mafia boss was struggling with colon cancer.

Notably, his sister was also supposedly running the network of pizzini helping her brother the mafia boss to maintain communication with his organisation while he was in hiding. The warrant also described Rosalia as a woman with “origins and traditions all inspired by an orthodox and rock-hard mafia culture”.

Alfredo Montalto, who ordered her arrest said that Rosalia was “a person of absolute trust of the boss. She managed the network of pizzini through which Denaro delivered his orders to the other associates.” Meanwhile, his sister who allegedly had a major role in her mafia family used the code name “Fragolone”, or “big strawberry,” to communicate with her brother.

According to reports, Rosalia’s husband, Filippo Guttadauro is also a convicted Sicilian mobster, while her daughter Lorenza is Matteo Messina Denaro’s defence lawyer. Among the long list of charges against the mafia boss includes the killings of anti-mafia magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in bomb attacks in 1992.

Additionally, Denaro also has also been accused of some of the most heinous crimes committed by the Sicilian mafia like the alleged murder of a 12-year-old son of a mobster turned state witness, who was strangled and dissolved in acid.

"We hope that India having a G20 presidency can play a central role in facilitating a negotiating process for the cessation of hostilities (in Ukraine). Keeping the multilateral community together is important and we hope the Indian presidency can do it even more," said Meloni in a joint presser. "PM Modi knows he can rely on us, on our cooperation for the G20 summit, to further enhance our relationship. I believe there is a lot we can do together." The Italian PM also heaped praise on PM Modi and called him one of the 'most loved' leaders going around. "The approval rating that PM Modi has reached shows he is one of the most famous world leaders. PM Modi is the most loved one of all (leaders) around the world. This has really proven that he has been a major leader and congratulations for that," she added. PM Modi reflected on Meloni's statement and said, "India has made it clear from the beginning that the Ukraine dispute can be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy." He also announced the start of a major defence technology exchange between the two countries. "Today, we're announcing the establishment of a 'Start Up Bridge' between India and Italy. We welcome this. There is one more sector wherein both the countries are beginning a new chapter, that is - defence cooperation." #WATCH | ...(PM Modi) is the most loved one of all (leaders) around the world. As the toll from Italy's boat wreck keeps on climbing, a horrible detail of the tragedy has come to the fore. The people smugglers responsible for the "voyage of death" threw kids into the sea to lighten the boat's weight, reports claimed. These claims have been made by survivors of the tragedy that took place on Sunday. The incident, as per Afghanistan's Taliban-led foreign ministry, has claimed the lives of 80 of the 170 passengers. 14 of the victims are reportedly children. However, as per the local Italian provincial government, the toll stands at 65. The number is expected to rise. The boat was smuggling migrants from Turkey to Italy at a hefty sum of €8,000 (£7,000) per passenger, as per Italian Police.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, on Monday (February 27), in a statement said that more than two dozen of the country’s citizens were believed to be on board the migrant ship which crashed off the coast of southern Italy after it hit some rocks. This also comes as rescuers in Italy found three more bodies, earlier today, bringing the total death toll to 62 which included at least 14 children.

The wooden vessel which is said to have left Turkey, last week sank near Steccato di Cutro, an Italian resort on the eastern coast of Calabria after it smashed into some rocks in stormy weather. According to local authorities, 80 people were rescued but dozens of passengers remain missing and feared dead. Additionally, 20 others had been hospitalised and one person was sent to intensive care, said the Italian authorities.

The "Floating Piers" installation which was created by artist Christo in 2016 was recalled by the unusual phenomenon when people place yellow floating footbridges across nearby Lake Iseo.

"But they were artificial bridges, whereas this is a natural work of art," Agata Carteri, a 48-year-old teacher, said. Warm temperatures, no spell of rain in six weeks and declining snow in the surrounding mountains have resulted in the decline in water levels of Garda, which is the largest lake in Italy, to its lowest level in winter in the span of 30 years.

Over the last few decades, the waterline has receded to 60-70cm, which is below the average. Five years ago, Matteo Fiori had waded his way to San Biagio island, which is also called the Island of Rabbits, while keeping his rucksack on his head to keep it dry.

"The water came up to my chest, it was an adventure," said the social worker, while surveying the newly-emerged causeway.

Tourists throng island as causeway surfaces in Italy’s Lake Garda due to winter drought

Venice has often been described as a beautiful oddity and rightfully so. The Italian city built on over 100 islands and crisscrossed by 177 canals and which was once at risk of drowning is now running dry. This has been attributed to weeks of dry winter weather while scientists and environmental groups have raised concerns that this could signal another drought in the European country after last summer’s emergency.

What is happening in Venice?

The Italian city, famous for its gondolas, has also been suffering alongside the country’s rivers and lakes which are also witnessing a severe lack of water. The problems in Venice have been attributed to a combination of factors ranging from a prolonged spell of low tides, lack of rain and a high-pressure system to even a full moon and sea currents.

Consequently, this has led to frustrated boat crews and worried officials as ambulances are unable to navigate through some of its narrower canals. This has become particularly problematic since the famous waterways serve as streets in car-less Venice.

According to a report by the Associated Press, ambulance boats, in certain areas of the city, had to be left tied up farther from their destination. This forced medical personnel to lift stretchers over long distances since their vessels cannot pass through canals reduced to a trickle of water and mud.

Last week, a series of images out of Venice showed pools of water collected in some canals and parked gondolas alongside exposed foundations of several buildings. This also meant that tourists could not navigate some secondary waterways in the Italian city. Notably, boats continued to work in some of the wider waterways across Venice which included the Grand and Giudecca canals.

A sustainable development analyst with the environmental advocacy group, We Are Here Venice, Jane Da Mosto has attributed this phenomenon in the Italian city to a combination of high atmospheric pressure with the lunar cycle producing an ultra-low water level during ebb tide, during mid-winter, reported AP. She also said how this phenomenon highlights the need for cleaning Venice’s inner canal network which is often overlooked.

“It's an absolutely normal phenomenon,” said Alvise Papa, the head of Venice’s tide forecasting centre to AFP, on Tuesday. He added, “Low tides are not enough to dry up the canals, but this year they are accompanied by high atmospheric pressure, which prevents bad weather”. Venice was expected to return to normalcy sometime this week.

Experts raise concern over Italy’s rivers and lakes

As Venice continues to grapple with the dire situation of its waterways, the rest of the country is not faring well either. In the past few days, scientists and experts, in the context of the situation of Venice’s canals have indicated that the country may face another drought. In a statement, on Monday, one of the largest environmental NGOs in Italy, the Legambiente said rivers and lakes, particularly in the north of the country are in “distress” due to the severe lack of water.

In this context, scientists have also referred to the Alps which received less than half of their normal snowfall. The aforementioned high-pressure system compounded by scarce Alpine snow melt this year has also contributed to the lack of water in lakes and rivers in northern Italy in the past few weeks.

The lack of snow this year has also been a concern since there was 53 per cent less in the Alps, particularly in the Po basin. Consequently, the Po, Italy’s longest river which runs from the Alps in the northwest to the Adriatic Sea also received 61 per cent less water than it typically does around this time of the year, said the environmental advocacy citing data from CIMA Research Foundation.

Notably, the aforementioned river accounts for roughly a third of the country's agricultural production. The statement also warned about the cascading effects of a prolonged drought in Italy which included, the lack of water for civil, agricultural and industrial uses that would, in turn, lead to loss of biodiversity, lower yields of crops, and disturb the balance of natural ecosystems.

This also comes as an anticyclone has been dominating the weather in western Europe for the past 15 days or so, which has led to an increase in the number of mild temperatures typically witnessed in late spring, as per Reuters. Additionally, the record low water levels in Lake Garda, in northern Italy, made it possible to reach the small island of San Biagio. Earlier this month, a small pathway which links the shore to the island re-emerged and visitors were able to walk across the middle of the lake.

“We are in a water deficit situation that has been building up since the winter of 2020-2021,” said climate expert Massimiliano Pasqui, from the National Research Council (CNR), as per Italian newspaper, Corriere della Sera. The country requires 500 millimetres of rain in the north-western regions over 50 days in order to recover, he added, reported Reuters.

Italy’s state of emergency over droughts

Last year, Italy declared a state of emergency in five northern regions which included areas surrounding the river Po which was facing its worst drought in 70 years. The government placed Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lombardy, Piedmont and Veneto under emergency and announced a relief fund of $38 million to help tackle the water shortage.

The phenomenon had been attributed to an unusually early heatwave and a lack of rainfall, particularly in the Po valley. Additionally, Lakes Maggiore and Garda had witnessed lower levels of water than typically expected at that time of the year while the levels of the Tiber River, which runs through Rome had also dropped.

He added, “Low tides are not enough to dry up the canals, but this year they are accompanied by high atmospheric pressure, which prevents bad weather”. Venice was expected to return to normalcy sometime this week. Experts raise concern over Italy’s rivers and lakes As Venice continues to grapple with the dire situation of its waterways, the rest of the country is not faring well either. Italy’s state of emergency over droughts Last year, Italy declared a state of emergency in five northern regions which included areas surrounding the river Po which was facing its worst drought in 70 years. An asteroid, previously unknown and roughly the size of Rome's Colosseum has been detected by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope. It is the smallest cosmic object that Webb has discovered to date. NASA took to its social media handles to inform about the discovery saying the asteroid had photobombed the Webb telescope. The asteroid is between 300 to 650 feet (100 to 200 meters) in length and was discovered by European astronomers using Webb's Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI). It was Webb's insane capability that a roughly 100-metre object at a distance of more than 100 million kilometres could be detected. “This is a fantastic result which highlights the capabilities of MIRI to serendipitously detect a previously undetectable size of asteroid in the main belt. Repeats of these observations are in the process of being scheduled, and we are fully expecting new asteroid interlopers in those images," said Thomas Müller, an astronomer at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany. The UK, Italy, Japan to set up international organisation for military innovation: Report

Italy and Libya on Saturday (January 28) signed a gas deal worth $8 billion- the largest single investment in Libya's energy sector in more than 20 years. The deal was signed as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is in the North African country to talk on energy as well as the issue of migration. A report by the news agency Associated Press on Saturday said the deal was signed by Claudio Descalzi, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Italy’s state-run energy company, ENI, and Libya’s National Oil Corporation's (NOC) chairman Farhat Bengdara, to develop two Libyan offshore gas fields.

The agreement involves developing the two offshore fields in Block NC-41, north of Libya. According to a statement, ENI said it would start pumping gas in 2026 and is estimated to reach 750 million cubic feet per day. Prime Minister Meloni, who was present during the signing of the deal, called the agreement “significant and historic.” Meloni said the deal would help Europe secure energy sources, adding "Libya is clearly for us a strategic economic partner."

The signing of this agreement has been criticised by the Libyan government. Oil minister Mohamed Aoun, who was not part of Saturday's meeting, told a local TV channel that the deal was illegal and the NOC did not consult his ministry, the report said. Speaking to reporters, NOC chairman Farhat Bengdara did not speak about the oil minister's criticism but said that those who reject the deal could challenge it in court.

Italy's ENI has been operating in Libya despite the ongoing security issues, producing gas mostly for the domestic market. In 2022, Libya delivered 2.63 billion cubic meters to Italy through the Greenstream pipeline- which was well below the annual levels of 8 billion cubic meters before the country's decline in 2011. Saturday's gas deal will likely deepen the rift between Libyan administrations in the east and west, the Associated Press report also said.

Libya is the second North African country that Italian PM Giorgia Meloni visited this week. She is seeking to secure new supplies of natural gas to replace Russian energy amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. Earlier, she had visted Algeria- which is Italy's main supplier of natural gas.

On Saturday, Meloni met with Abdel Hamid Dbeibah, who heads one of Libya’s rival administrations, and was also to hold talks with Mohamed Younis Menfi, who chairs Libya’s ceremonial presidential council.

On the issue of migrantion, Dbeibah, while addressing a joint press conference with Meloni, said that the Italian government would provide five “fully equipped” boats to Libya’s coast guard to help stem the flow of migrants to the European shores.
