Slovenia on Saturday (Oct 21) deployed police on border crossings with Croatia and Hungary to prevent potential security threats. The deployment comes a day after the government decided to introduce temporary border controls until October 30. According to a report by the news agency STA, police were deployed on 14 border crossings with Croatia and Hungary.

Long queues were seen at border crossings as travellers waited to have their documents checked. Katica Fjacko, who was travelling from the Croatian capital Zagreb, said she had left earlier to make the journey because of the controls. "Now this is a bigger chaos, people are worried," she said.

Explaining the decision to introduce border controls, the Slovenian government cited security threats that may come from what it said were "members of various terrorist and extremist movements and groups" moving from areas of armed conflict and aiming to reach Europe. The government also cited a rise of organised crime in the western Balkans.

Earlier, Italy had introduced controls on its border crossing with Slovenia to improve home security. The government said that authorities in the northeastern border region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia had identified 16,000 people so far this year who had entered Italy illegally across the Slovenian border.

Slovenia, Italy, Croatia, and Hungary are among the 27 countries that belong to the Schengen area, the world’s largest free travel zone. The Schengen nations can temporarily reintroduce border controls “in the event of a serious threat to public policy or internal security.”

Italy and Slovenia's decisions reflect the increasing security concerns in Europe due to the intensifying war between Israel and Hamas, the news agency Associated Press reported.

On Thursday, European Union (EU) interior ministers debated how to manage the impact of the war on the 27-nation bloc following a firebomb assault on a synagogue in Berlin and killings in Belgium by suspected Islamic extremists.

EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson said in Luxembourg that the commission is looking into the issue of internal border checks, which she described as one of the challenges of the Schengen area.

A sealed 2,000-year-old tomb, which had a fresco of Cerberus - Ancient Greek mythology's three-headed dog - was uncovered in Italy.

The archaeologists discovered the burial chamber in Giugliano, a suburb of Naples, which is believed to be around 2,000 years old.

It was discovered on a farmland during an archaeological survey which was done before the maintenance work on the city's water system started.

Previously, a large number of burial sites were found by archaeologists in the same area that likely date from the Roman Republic era (510-31 BC) to the Roman Imperial Age (31 BC – AD 476).

The undiscovered tomb features various frescoes, which are present on its walls and ceilings in largely pristine condition.

In the various frescoes, the most notable mythological figure drawn is that of the three-headed dog, believed to guard the gates of the underworld. Because of this, the burial chamber was named the 'Tomb of Cerburus'.

The attention-grabbing painting represents the 12th and most dangerous of the Labours of Hercules when he was guided by Mercury to Hades to capture the three-headed monster dog Cerberus.

Other mythological figures present in the frescoes were ichthyocentaurs, a centaurine-type sea god which has a human's upper body, the tail of a fish and the lower anterior half and forelegs similar to that of a horse.

To enter the burial chamber, tiles covering the ceiling opening had to be removed by the archaeologists carefully, which led them to an 'unprecedented' discovery.

"The tomb has frescoed ceilings and walls in perfect condition, with mythological scenes that go all around the room and figurative representations among which, a three-headed dog stands out," stated Mariano Nuzzo, the superintendent of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Naples metropolitan area.

The Italian government is planning for a possible mass evacuation of tens of thousands of people who live around the Campi Flegrei super volcano near Naples, officials said on Thursday.

The new measures, which include a scheme to check on the strength of buildings in the area after months of repeated earthquakes, will be discussed at a cabinet meeting later in the day, a government statement said.

Campi Flegrei, or Phlegraean Fields from the Greek word for "burning," lies some 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) from Naples and is dotted with towns and villages, including Pozzuoli, Agnano and Bacoli, which have a combined population of more than 500,000.

The caldera is dotted with 24 craters and is a much bigger volcano than the nearby Vesuvius, which destroyed the ancient Roman city of Pompeii in 79 AD.

It has been jolted by more than 1,100 earthquakes in the last month alone, including a 4.0 trembler on Monday and a 4.2 magnitude quake last week -- the strongest in the area for four decades.

Experts say the increased seismic activity is probably linked to a phenomenon known as bradyseism, when the earth rises, or falls, depending on the cycle, caused by the filling or emptying of underground magma chambers.

There is not an imminent threat of an eruption, most volcanologists say, but with the ground currently rising by 1.5 cm (0.59 inches) a month, there is concern over the impact on local buildings.

Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said this week evacuations would only be triggered in case of "extreme necessity".

The cabinet is also expected to direct more resources to local civil protection agencies to ensure they can swiftly intervene in case of emergency and to fund a communication campaign to raise public awareness, Musumeci said.

Local media reported that a group of hospitals in the area would start evacuation tests from Friday to make sure they are ready to face stronger quakes or eruptions.

The last time Campi Flegrei suffered a comparable burst of earthquakes was in the 1980s. On that occasion, some 40,000 people were temporarily evacuated from nearby Pozzuoli.

The last significant eruption was in 1538. One of its biggest eruptions took place 39,000 years ago and might have led to the extinction of Neanderthal man, researchers say. Magma from that blast has been found in Greenland, some 4,500 km away.

Italy gets ready for possible evacuations from super volcano near Naples

At least 21 people died after a bus fell from a bridge in Venice, Italy on Tuesday (Oct 3). The bus was carrying 40 people of which 21 died and 18 were injured, Venice councillor Renato Boraso said, adding, that the death toll could rise as several of those injured were in critical condition. Officials said the vehicle fell around 15 metres (50 feet) onto electricity lines and caught fire at around 7:45 pm (17.45 GMT).

Five of the victims were Ukrainians and one was German, said Venice's prefect Michele Di Bari, the local representative of the interior ministry, news agency Reuters reported. Firefighters said the bus caught fire after careening off a bridge linking the Mestre and Marghera districts. Further details are awaited.

In a post on Facebook, Venice's Mayor Luigi Brugnaro described the scene of the crash as an apocalyptic scene. "A tragedy has struck our community this evening," he said.

Speaking to reporters, Brugnaro said some of the victims in "critical" condition were in Padova, and added that some people had burned.

Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her "profound condolences". "I am in contact with Mayor Luigi Brugnaro and (Transport) Matteo Salvini in order to follow the news of this tragedy," she said in a statement.

The cause of the accident is not yet known. Boraso said one line of enquiry was that the driver, a 40-year-old Italian who was among those killed, had taken ill before the crash.

It had been anticipated for a few months but it looks almost certain that Europe might run out of local olive oil supplies and face frequent shortages. The extreme heatwave across Europe, especially the Mediterranean has damaged harvests for the second year in a row. According to a Guardian report, Europe, the world's largest producer of olive oil has been forced to rely on South America to plug the gap by importing supplies. “Today it is almost physically impossible to buy olive oil. It is sold out,” Walter Zanre, the chief executive of the UK arm of Filippo Berio. Spain, which produces about half of the global olive oil crop, only harvested 750,000 tonnes, more than the 660,000 produced last year but well short of the 1.3 million tonnes target. Consequently, the global production is expected to fall to 2.4 million tonnes. Last year's global demand stood at three million tonnes and it looks highly unlikely that production will reach that level. In Pics | Top nutritionist reveals names of superfoods you need to add to your diet in 2023 Apart from Spain, other important olive oil-growing regions such as Greece, Italy, Portugal, Turkey and Morocco were also hit by extreme weather conditions, affecting the crops. Italy had been planning to produce 350,000 tonnes of olive oil this year but drought and recent hailstorms in the major producing area of Puglia have shattered any such hopes. Meanwhile, Greece is expected to produce only 200,000 tonnes this year which is a third less than last year as fruit fly infestations, in addition to the heatwave cause problems for the farmers. Prices start to rise “We have been saddled with another difficult year. During the early part of the summer we thought things might get better but as the summer has progressed things have got worse," added Zanre. “We’re looking at production rates being cut by half this year. The imbalance in demand and supply has already led to very big price increases, which producers are enjoying but which are very much hurting consumers. Watch | Olive oil demand surges in West Asia × The fear of shortage has already hit the supermarkets. The cost of extra virgin olive oil in southern Spain has shot up to €8.45 per kg this month which is double the price of last year and the highest it has been in the last two decades. Meanwhile, in the UK analysts at Associa remarked that retail prices of olive oil at major supermarkets have climbed 47 per cent in recent weeks. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

The infamous Italian mafia figure Matteo Messina Denaro, who spent three decades evading capture, was laid to rest on Wednesday (Sept 27), in his hometown with only his close family members allowed to bid farewell, said local media reports.

The Italian police arrested the country’s most-wanted mafia boss in the Sicilian capital, Palermo, in January this year. At the age of 61, Messina Denaro was grappling with cancer when he was apprehended in January. His health deteriorated in recent weeks, leading to his transfer from a maximum-security prison in central Italy to a hospital. He passed away on Monday (Sept 25).

Late on Tuesday, his coffin was driven in a hearse from the hospital and arrived in his hometown of Castelvetrano in Sicily in the early hours of Wednesday, as per media reports.

A handful of his family members were present at his burial which included his two sisters, a brother and his daughter, who was born during his fugitive years.

Denaro was buried in the family tomb, according to the Palermo Today Daily. There was no religious service.

Convicted of heinous crimes

Denaro was convicted of numerous crimes, including his involvement in the planning of the 1992 murders of anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. It was part of a series of crimes that sent shockwaves across Italy and prompted a crackdown on the Sicilian mafia.

He was also held responsible for bombings in Rome, Florence, and Milan in 1993 that claimed 10 lives, in addition to orchestrating the kidnapping of 12-year-old Giuseppe Di Matteo to dissuade the boy's father from testifying against the mafia. Tragically, the young boy was held captive for two years before being murdered.

Referred to by the Italian press as "the last Godfather," Messina Denaro was captured outside a private health clinic in Palermo, Sicily, on January 16. Leaked medical records revealed that he had undergone surgery for colon cancer in 2020 and 2022 under a fake name.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella during a meeting with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier called the European Union rules on the distribution of migrants “prehistoric” as the debate raged on Friday (September 22), about how to manage the surge of migrant boat arrivals from North Africa.

Earlier this week, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen following a visit to the Italian island of Lampedusa – which has recently witnessed a record number of migrant arrivals and announced a state of emergency – promised a 10-point EU action plan to help Italy deal with the situation.

Italian president’s statement

During a visit to the Italian region of Sicily, on Thursday (Sept 21), with his German counterpart, Mattarella said the EU rules for migrant distribution were “prehistoric” and called for “new, courageous” solutions to deal with the surge of migration into Europe.

He also spoke about how it is necessary to think “how to use the rudimentary and outdated tools differently in the face of a totally new phenomenon,” adding that “the Dublin regulations are prehistoric” and drawn up “in another world, the phenomenon of mass migration had not begun.”

Similarly, the German president reiterated the criticism of the so-called Dublin procedure – which requires irregular migrants to be registered in the EU country they first enter – and said, “There must be progress here, that’s not even in question.”

He also hoped that the two countries would again meet on migration policy in the months to come after his meeting with Mattarella where the two heads of state visited a centre for refugees.

Notably, the Dublin procedure also says that should the irregular migrants head to another nation in the 27-nation bloc, they could be returned to their first port of call. Ahead of his visit, Steinmeier had also called for “fair distribution” of migrants arriving irregularly in Europe.

In an interview with Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper, the German president said both Rome and Berlin were “at their limits” and stressed the need for “stronger controls and surveillance at our external borders.”

What is happening in Lampedusa?

During her visit to the Italian island, the European Commission president vowed a 10-point EU action plan to help Italy which includes using the EU’s external borders agency Frontex to identify migrants arriving and repatriate those not eligible for asylum.

Not to mention the island saw a sharp rise in the number of people arriving by boat, with more than 7,000 landing last week which prompted Lampedusa’s mayor, Filippo Mannino, to declare a state of emergency.

Italian president calls EU rules on sharing migrants ‘prehistoric’, urges for reforms

It was all going horribly wrong for Italy as they trailed Uruguay by 10 points at the break in their Rugby World Cup Pool A encounter on Wednesday but a halftime reckoning got them back on track before they powered to a 38-17 victory. A penalty try and yellow cards for Niccolo Cannone and Danilo Fischetti left Italy chasing the game and the interval brought about a change in their approach.

"We got back into the changing room and we said we screwed it up and we handled it, just embraced the challenge," captain Michele Lamaro said. "I think we stepped back into the field with confidence, you know, stick together every single moment, win the little battles to win the final war."

Coach Kieran Crowley was disappointed with Italy's poor discipline but praised his defence for holding out. "You can't afford two players off the field. One of them was just ill-discipline, the second one you could argue but the referee made the decision so no problem," Crowley said. "But you know, we’ve got to be better than that because you're going to give away points.

"It was a hell of an effort from them because we only gave away seven points with 13 players so you know that defence was pretty good."

Two wins from their opening two games, along with two bonus points set Italy up nicely for their remaining fixtures with New Zealand and France. "I think we've got 10 points, if you asked me before to have 10 points after two games I would have taken it," Lamaro said. "It's unbelievable the energy this group has, the way we are together, the way we live together. It's something unbelievable."

Lamaro, who scored the first try after the break to begin the comeback, also had plenty of praise for Italy's opponents. "I told all the Uruguayan guys they can be proud of their performance, they put us under a lot of pressure but in these moments, what counts the most is how strong is the team and in the second half we showed that and smashed everything we could. "This is a real group, we're a family. It was a really tough game."

Italy now have time to recover before they take on New Zealand on Sept. 29. For now, the Azzurri and their 25-year-old captain will enjoy what they have already achieved. "It's unbelievable. I am young but without all these players, I couldn't do anything. I'm really proud of the boys and I'll share this moment for the rest of my life with them."

Rugby World Cup: Captain Michele Lamaro lauds Italy's second-half comeback against Uruguay

France's Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said Tuesday (September 19), his government will not welcome any migrants coming from Italy's tiny Lampedusa island which saw the arrival of a record number of aliens last week.

France's Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said Tuesday (September 19), his government will not welcome any migrants coming from Italy's tiny Lampedusa island which saw the arrival of a record number of aliens last week. Speaking on French television, Darmanin said the French government had conveyed to Italy that it was "ready to help them return people to countries with which we have good diplomatic relations", citing the example of Ivory Coast and Senegal. However, France "will not welcome migrants" from the island, he added. Last week, more than 8,500 migrants crashed on the island whose total population is only 6,000, according to the UN's International Organization for Migration. Images and videos of thousands of migrants, arriving on the island, scaling the perimeter fence and wandering around went viral on social media platforms. Assessing the gravity of the situation, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen travelled to the island over the weekend and announced a 10-point emergency action plan. Watch | Lampedusa grapples with surge in migrant arrivals × However, her plan of sharing the burden of new arrival met with stiff resistance from bloc members. Prior to France, the right-wing governments in Poland and Hungary refused to accept the migrants from Italy. Reflecting on the situation, Italy's Minister Giorgia Meloni said the pressure of migrants arriving in the country was "unsustainable" and called on the European Union to intervene. Lampedusa, located just 90 miles (around 145 kilometres) off the eastern coast of Tunisia is Italy's first port of call for people crossing from North Africa. Recent months have seen a great influx of migrants using Tunisia as the main departure point to enter Europe. Earlier, most migrants attempting to leave the conflict-ridden zones of Africa and the Middle East used to take the Libya route to enter the continent. However, the geographical closeness to Lampedusa and inaction from the Italian authorities to stop the arrivals has meant migrants are increasingly choosing this route to enter Europe. Cumulatively, over 118,500 boat migrants have arrived in Italy since the start of the year, according to Italy's interior ministry data. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

The picturesque Italian city of Venice, known for its stunning canals and historic charm, is gearing up for a bold experiment aimed at curbing over-tourism. In an effort to regain control over its burgeoning visitor numbers, the city is expected to approve a trial phase of a €5 (approximately $5.37) daily fee for all visitors aged 14 and above on Tuesday (September 12). This move will also require tourists to book their entry to the city in advance.

Battle with excess tourism

Venice is grappling with the consequences of its immense popularity among tourists. In 2019, despite its small size of just 7.6 square kilometres (2.7 square miles), the city welcomed nearly 13 million tourists, as reported by the Italian National Statistics Institute. With visitor numbers projected to surpass pre-pandemic levels in the coming years, the problem of over-tourism has reached critical levels.

Simone Venturini, a city council member responsible for tourism, acknowledges the urgent need for intervention. He emphasises that Venice, as one of Europe's most visited cities, bears the brunt of excessive tourism. The primary objective of the proposed fee is to encourage daily tourists to opt for off-peak days, thereby alleviating the strain on the city's infrastructure and resources.

Earlier this year, UNESCO recommended placing Venice on its list of world heritage sites in danger. The city faces a dual threat from climate change and mass tourism, which have the potential to cause irreversible changes to its delicate ecosystem and historical fabric.

In 2021, Venice banned large cruise ships from entering its historic centre via the Giudecca canal following a ship collision with a harbour. Critics argued that these ships not only posed a pollution threat but also contributed to the erosion of the city's foundations, compounded by frequent flooding.

While opinions among tourists are mixed regarding the proposed $5.37 daily fee, many agree that action is necessary to address overcrowding. Some, like Karina from Germany, view the fee as reasonable, given the unique experience Venice offers. However, others, such as Cal, a student from Ireland, feel that $5.37 is a substantial sum for a day of sightseeing.

Beyond the fee, Venice faces the complex challenge of striking a balance between preserving its cultural heritage and accommodating tourists while safeguarding the well-being of its residents. Rising rents and an imbalance in accommodations between tourists and residents are driving locals out of the city, leading to a transformation from a city into a temporary tourist destination.

For the first time in Europe, researchers have found the red fire ant, one of the world's most invasive species. According to a new study published in the scientific journal Current Biology on Monday, researchers have found 88 red fire ant nests spread across five hectares in Syracuse in Sicily, Italy, CNN reported. The red fire ants, who go by the scientific name Solenopsis invicta, are native to South America. Over the past century, they have spread to much of the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, China, and Australia. When disturbed, these red fire ants can be aggressive. Their sting is painful and can cause allergic reactions. They can also harm crops and local ecosystems. Mattia Menchetti, the lead study author and a researcher at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology in Spain, said, "S. invicta is one of the worst invasive species. It can spread alarmingly quickly." She added, "Finding the species in Italy was a huge surprise. But we knew this day would come." ALSO READ | Researchers discover 'remarkable' 24,000-year-old palaeolithic cave art in Spain According to the author, people have found fire ants in imported products in Spain, Finland, and the Netherlands, but their established colonies have never been confirmed before the study. The researchers found the red fire ant colonies in suburban areas of Syracuse. However, they do not know how the tiny creatures reached there. They believe the insects might have reached their new destination with lots of human activity. According to the study, wind could have transported the red fire ants from the northwest of Sycaruse, the location of the city's commercial port. The researchers said local people complained about the increased ant stings since 2019. ALSO READ | Scientists find that Apollo 17's left-over tech causing moonquakes on the lunar surface The genetic analysis of the red fire ants found in Italy suggested they had most likely come from the United States or China. The EU has revised its "species of concern" list to include the red fire ant. However, the British government has not updated its list since Brexit despite calls from experts concerned about new invasive species, The Guardian reported. Researchers warned that the ants could spread over Europe, as seven per cent of the continent, including large urban areas like Barcelona, Rome, London, and Paris, have a climate habitable for the species. According to a UN-backed report, every year, invasive species cost the world over $423 billion as they cause plant and animal extinctions, risk food security, and aggravate environmental catastrophes worldwide. Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, on Sunday (September 10), said that leaving the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), also known as Silk Road, will not jeopardize her country's relations with China, further stating that the decision on this matter has yet to be taken, as per Italian media reports.

On the sidelines of the G20 Summit, the Italian PM met Chinese Premier Li Qiang and conveyed her plan to pull out of the BRI, as per the Italian media, Corriere della Sera daily reports.

During the press briefing on the last day of the G20 Summit, Meloni spoke about the conversation she had with the head of the Chinese government.

"A cordial and constructive dialogue on how we can deepen our bilateral partnership... I intend to keep my commitment to visit China... It makes more sense to go to China when we have more information on our bilateral cooperation and how to develop it," Meloni said at the conference.

"Leaving the Silk Road does not compromise relations, but the decision still has to be taken," the prime minister assured.
