Leaders from Italy's opposition parties on Monday (January 8) urged Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to disband neo-fascist organisations following a viral video purportedly showing hundreds of people making the fascist salute.

"Rome, January 7, 2024. It seems like 1924," when Italy was run by Benito Mussolini's National Fascist Party, Elly Schlein, leader of the centre-left Democratic Party, posted on Facebook.

"Neo-fascist organisations must be dissolved, as the Constitution says."

The media in Italy took note of the video including the Corriere della Sera, Italy's newspaper of record. The video shows hundreds of people. They can be seen standing in lines and making the fascist salute as they shout "present". Most of the people in the video appeared to be men who were dressed in black. WION could not independently verify the video.

As per reports in local media, the video was recorded on Sunday night. It was an event marking the anniversary of murders of two teenaged right-wing activists. The murders reportedly took place in 1978.

It was reported that the gathering took place in front of former headquarters of the Italian Social Movement (MSI) in Rome. MSI was formed by supporters of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini after the Second World War.

It has been alleged that the teenaged right-wing activists were killed by far-left activists in 1978. No one was ever convicted in the case.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy party grew out of the MSI in post-fascist years. Elly Schlein called on Meloni to condemn the fascist salute event.

The AGI news agency has reported that opposition Five Star Movement is preparing to file a complaint to Rome prosecutor's office and ask it to probe if any crime was committed.

A female senator of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's right wing party sparked outrage on Thursday (Dec 28) when she said that young women's "first aspiration" should be to have children. Meloni's party, Brothers of Italy&nbsp;is emphasising on reversing Italy's declining birth rate and promote the traditional family structure. The party is also clamping down on same sex-parenting.

"My mother always used to tell me ... you must always remember that you have the opportunity to do whatever you want, but you must never forget that your first aspiration must be to be a mother yourself," senator Lavinia Mennuni said.
&nbsp;
The senator was speaking during a talk show on La7 TV channel and was sitting next to a Catholic archbishop. Mennuni said that religious institutions needed to make maternity "cool" again in addition to encouraging young people to marry early.

"There is a need, let's say a mission, because I think it is a beautiful thing, (for women) to bring children into the world who will be the future citizens, the future Italians," said the 47-year-old lawmaker who has three children herself.

<h2>The flak</h2>

Mennuni's comments drew criticism from other political corners in the country's politics. Senator Raffaella Paita, who represents centrist Italia Viva party lashed out at Mennuni saying such comments represented "an embarrassing backwardness".

"Her words resonate with ideas from an obscurantist past, fortunately outdated," Paita said.

Chiara Appendino from the left-leaning Five Star Movement, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) saying that Brothers of Italy was suffering from "Medieval nostalgia". She added that young women should be "the freedom to dream and the means to accomplish themselves as they wish."

This is not the first time Mennuni sparked controversy. Just last week she proposed a bill seeking to prevent school directors from stopping Catholic-themed activities like setting up Jesus Christ nativity scene and so on.

Italian senator from PM Meloni's party says having children should be women's 'mission', draws flak

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who made headlines for breaking up with her partner, her 'anxiety' phone cover, and her candid photos with Indian PM Narendra Modi, is yet again gaining attention and grabbing headlines.

This time it is for all the wrong reasons. This is related to an article titled 'Man of the Year', published in a far-right Italian daily in Milan, Libero Quotidiano.&nbsp;

The article is penned by the paper's Rome bureau chief, Mario Sechi. The article showered praises on the Italian PM with its bold commentary hailing Meloni for being a staunch supporter of women's rights.&nbsp;

Giving Meloni the title of the ‘man of the year’, the article said that the Italian PM who swept to victory in 2022 "has cancelled the war of the sexes by winning it, by thinking differently, being divergent, overcoming the arrogance of men and the defeatism of women. She has not only broken the glass ceiling, she has dissolved it."&nbsp;

One of the glaring issues with the article was its title itself where Italian MP Elisabetta Piccolotti from the left-wing alliance party Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra said that the title 'man of the year' reeks of male superiority.

Piccolotti further stoked controversy when she confronted Meloni on Facebook asking her to speak out which gender she identifies with.&nbsp;

Billionaire Elon Musk on Saturday (Dec 16) said that oil and gas should not be demonised and that it was extremely critical to reduce carbon emissions to preserve the planet.

While speaking at a right-wing political gathering organised by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy party, Musk said, "I don't think we should demonise oil and gas, I think we should say look that is obviously necessary in the short term and the medium term too, and although it takes several decades to become sustainable, so I think if we just, without getting too worried about it, seek to have a sustainable energy future, gradually, then that's what will happen."

"Climate change alarm is exaggerated in the short term," he further added.

Musk said that it was important that industries began reducing billions of the carbon they take from Earth and releasing it into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels.

<h2>'Worried about Italy's low birth rate', says Musk</h2>

On being asked if his firms would invest in Italy, Musk said that he was worried about the country's declining birth rate.

"Italy is a great place to invest. It's a great, you know, a great country. But I do want to emphasise that I do worry about the low birth rate. And you know, if a company is to invest in Italy, they're like, well you have to say like, will there be enough people to work there?," he said.&nbsp;

"You know, it's a simple question. You know, if the workforce is declining, then if the workforce is declining, then. Then. Then who will work at the company? Simple. If there's no people, there's no people to work," he added.

He further urged the Italian government to create incentives for families to have more kids, adding that the country could simply not rely on immigration to fill that gap.

Archaeologists in Italy discovered a bakery prison in Pompeii which enslaved workers who were exploited to make bread. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Friday (Dec 8), the bakery was discovered during excavations at the ruins of Pompeii. In a statement, Italy's culture ministry said the finding emerged in Region IX, Insula 10, where excavations were underway as part of a larger project to secure and consolidate the slopes that form the edge of the unexcavated areas of the city. A bakery with no view of the outside world In a small room, with no view of the outside world and with small windows high in the wall with iron bars to let the light in, slaves and donkeys were forced to walk around for hours to grind grain to make bread. Speaking to Reuters, Pompeii Archaeological Park's Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel said, "We are in the house's bakery and behind me, there is the big oven. The stable was right here, the donkeys used to live between these two spaces and, as you can see, there are a lot of mills." "The paving stones were also a bit slippery, so here we have something that exists in other parts of the city but is particularly clear here, which helped us understand this phenomenon. There are carvings," Zuchtriegel added. Photo: The bakery did not provide a view of the outside world and with small windows high in the wall with iron bars to let the light in. The archaeologist also said that the bakery highlighted the very precarious living conditions of enslaved people and animals exploited for this gruelling work. Pompeii, which was rediscovered in the 18th century, is one of Italy's most popular tourist attractions. The city has seen a flurry of archaeological activity in recent times. In August, archaeologists discovered a small bedroom in a Roman villa near the city that was almost certainly used by slaves, throwing light on their condition in the ancient world. Italy, the only G7 member of China's Belt and Road Initiative, is dumping it. It has officially withdrawn from BRI. Is this a humiliation for Chinese President Xi Jinping?

Gravitas: Italy's snub an embarrassment for Xi?

Italy has officially left China's Belt and Road Initiative and Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stressed that the withdrawal happened because the agreement did not yield the expected results.

China reacted sharply on Thursday (Dec 7) after Italy said that it would withdraw from the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin slammed what he termed was the 'smearing' of the ambitious infrastructure project. Italy has withdrawn from BRI just four years after it became the only G7 country to join the China-led global initiative.

"China firmly opposes smearing and undermining of cooperation on the joint construction of the Belt and Road," said Wang.

China also opposes "confrontation and division among camps that causes separation", he added. The foreign ministry however, did not comment directly on Italy's exit.&nbsp;

The Belt and Road Initiative is Beijing's ambitious global project through which it wishes to establish land and sea-based trade routes from China to the West, undertaking mega projects to create an infrastructure towards the end goal.

However, critics of BRI say that the project is a cover for China's intention to greatly expand its influence around the world. China has repeatedly drawn flak for the 'debt trap' strategy it uses to gain political and strategic assets.&nbsp;

Wang however, said that participation from more that 150 countries was an evidence that BRI was the "most popular international public product and the largest international cooperation platform in the world today".

He also underlined that Italy had sent representatives to BRI forum held in Beijing in October this year.

"This embodies the huge appeal and global influence of jointly constructing the Belt and Road," he said.

<h2>The IMEEC</h2>

The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), the MoU for which was signed during the New Delhi G20 Summit in September, is widely perceived as an initiative launched to counter BRI.

On September 10, the governments of India, Saudi Arabia, UAE, France, Germany, Italy, the European Union and the United States signed the MoU.

As Italy leaves BRI, China warns against 'smearing' of the mega-initiative

Italy has withdrawn from China's vast Belt and Road infrastructure initiative, more than four years after becoming the only G7 nation to sign up, a government source said Wednesday.

The long-expected decision was quietly communicated to Beijing three days ago without any official announcement, according to the Corriere della Sera daily.

An Italian government source confirmed to AFP on Wednesday that Rome had pulled out, giving no details beyond saying it was done in such a way as to "keep channels of political dialogue open".

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has long been opposed to Italy's participation in an initiative viewed by many as an attempt by Beijing to buy political influence -- and whose economic benefits to Rome were limited.

The deal was due to automatically renew in March 2024 unless Italy opted out by the end of this year.

But Meloni and her hard-right government were also wary of provoking Beijing and risking retaliation against Italian companies.

Without directly confirming the news, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Wednesday that Italy was seeking to "relaunch the strategic partnership" with Beijing.

He told parliament that during a September trip to China he made clear Rome wanted to "promote better access to our products regardless of our participation" in the BRI.

News of the decision emerged on the eve of a high-level EU-China summit in Beijing on Thursday, the first of its kind since 2019 set to focus on trade.

<h2>Two trillion dollars</h2>

Beijing says upwards of 150 countries stretching from Uruguay to Sri Lanka have signed up to the initiative, a central pillar of President Xi Jinping's bid to expand China's clout overseas.

It says it has inked over two trillion dollars in contracts around the world, from high-speed rail tracks crisscrossing South East Asia and massive transport, energy and infrastructure works through Central Asia.

Proponents hail it for bringing resources and economic growth to the Global South -- but it has also been slammed for saddling poor countries with enormous debt.

It has also given Chinese infrastructure firms a foothold in many emerging economies.

There are concerns, particularly among Western nations, that China is seeking to rebuild the global world order to its advantage, while opposition voices in BRI countries have also decried what they see as increasing Chinese influence in local politics.

Meanwhile, Washington has warned that China could use the initiative as a pretext to build up military bases around the world in the name of protecting BRI investments.

- Limited impact -
Italy, a member of the European Union, the G7 grouping of advanced economies and NATO, signed up in 2019 under the government of then prime minister Giuseppe Conte.

Before taking office in October 2022, Meloni said that was a "mistake".

The non-binding memorandum of understanding struck with China contained broad undertakings for cooperation in logistics, infrastructure, financial and environmental sectors.

But details were scarce and the lack of transparency fuelled distrust among Italy's allies.

The economic benefits of the partnership also fell short of what had been expected, with Tajani admitting in September that membership "has not produced the results we were hoping for".

Experts noted that other big European economies, such as Germany and France, did not join the BRI, but have nonetheless secured important trade and investment deals.

Western nations have also become more hawkish towards China since Italy signed the deal, noted Giuliano Noci, a China expert at the Milan Polytechnic business school.

But he told AFP he did not expect the decision to pull out to have major repercussions on trade.

Italy had "proposed a strategic partnership to the Chinese government that allows it to emerge from the affair with its head held high," he said.&nbsp;

Ditching modelling career, Italy's 'most handsome man' joins church

Reigning champions Italy were placed in the same group as Spain in Saturday's draw for Euro 2024, while France will come up against the Netherlands and England avoided any of the toughest opponents.

Gareth Southgate's much-fancied England side will meet Slovenia, Denmark and Serbia, with hosts Germany taking on Scotland in the tournament's opening game on June 14 in Munich.

Italy, who beat England on penalties at Wembley in the final of the last European Championship in 2021, and Spain will also face Croatia and Albania in Group B.

Spain, victors over Italy in the final of Euro 2012, will take on 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia in their opening match in Berlin on June 15.

Italy were always likely to face a difficult draw after being placed in the bottom pot based on their results in qualifying, when they scraped through with a 0-0 stalemate against Ukraine in their final match.

"When you're in the fourth pot you know that you have a lot of teams ahead of you, but you can't forget that you represent Italy and you have to play every match with pride," coach Luciano Spalletti told broadcaster RAI.

The meeting of France, the 2022 World Cup runners-up, and the Netherlands will be the other heavyweight tie of the opening phase.

They were in the same section in qualifying, with France winning both encounters. The two nations are in Group D along with Austria and a play-off winner, which will be one of Poland, Wales, Finland or Estonia.

<h2>'Ready for the expectation'</h2>

England, in contrast, will have few complaints about their opponents in Group C, although a Denmark side ranked 19th in the world were arguably the team to avoid from the second pot of seeds.

Southgate's team, considered the favourites along with France for the tournament, will take on Serbia in their opening game in Gelsenkirchen on June 16.

"I've stood here after quite a few draws and you always feel the same way, you can look at it on paper but the games aren't played on paper," Southgate told the BBC.

"One or two teams that you are obviously glad to avoid, especially in pot three, pot four, but all the teams we play are more than capable."

He added: "We've developed a lot as a team over the past few years, we're used to these big games, we're ready for the expectation and we hope we can give our supporters some more brilliant nights as I think we have in the last few tournaments."

If England top their group, and France also finish first in their section, the two sides would find themselves on the same side of the draw in the knockout phase and would be on course to meet in the semi-finals.

Scotland, who famously lost to Brazil in the opening match of the 1998 World Cup, will again have the honour of featuring in the tournament's curtain-raiser when they meet Germany to start in Group A.

Hungary and Switzerland complete that section, which could be one of the most evenly-matched.

"It'll be nice to open the tournament, be involved in that first game, and hopefully we can set the tournament off with a good match," Scotland manager Steve Clarke told the BBC.

<h2>Germany face Scotland in opener</h2>

Germany have been European champions three times, a record shared with Spain, but there are big doubts about their form heading into the tournament.

"It will be a very nice start against Scotland in Munich. The other games will also be exciting duels. It's not a group of death, but a very good one," said Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Euro 2016 winners Portugal were drawn in Group F with Turkey, the Czech Republic and a play-off winner from either Greece, Georgia, Luxembourg or Kazakhstan.

Belgium are in Group E alongside Slovakia, Romania and the winner of the other play-off path, which will be Israel, Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina or Ukraine.

The month-long Euro, played in 10 cities across Germany, will conclude with the final in Berlin on July 14.

The top two teams in each group will qualify for the last 16, along with the four best third-placed sides.

Earlier on Saturday, European football's governing body UEFA announced that the total prize pot for competing nations will be 331 million euros ($360m).

Each team gets 9.25 million euros as a starting amount and will earn up to a maximum of 28.25 million euros for the winner, if they win all their group games.

After remaining steady for almost 1,000 years, the Garisenda tower – also known as the 'leaning tower' - located in Bologna town of Italy is now facing the risk of collapsing because of excessive leaning, as per reports.

Since the 14th century, the 150-foot tall tower has continued to lean at an angle of 4 degrees when officials made efforts to remove the top of the building to stabilise it. The iconic Tower of Pisa has been leaning at 5 degrees.

Through the years, extensive work has been done by Italy to maintain the integrity of the tower.

However, now the tower is excessively leaning and the officials have been forced to bring into action a civil protection plan. As per CNN, the tower now stands at risk of a "sudden and unexpected collapse".

“A protective cordon will be erected to contain debris resulting from a possible collapse, to reduce the vulnerability of surrounding buildings and the exposure to the population, as well as blocking access to the off-limits areas," said the city council, in a statement.

The scientific committee, which has been monitoring the site, since 2019 has issued the warning. Sensors were installed by the scientific committee to measure the ancient tower's movements.

The committee stated that their readings recorded in October 2023 had triggered alarm bells, as reported by CNN.

<h2>Crushing compression observed in tower's base</h2>

The 'high alert' warning said that an "unexpected and accelerated trend" of "crushing compression" has been observed in the base of the tower. It added that the cracks present in the stones which are present in the base can expand the bricks which are placed above.

As soon as the report was published, the area around the tower was shut down by the civic officials and all roads which were leading to it were closed down.

Earlier it was reported that the square which surrounds the medieval “leaning tower” in the Italian city of Bologna will remain closed for “a few years” as concerns regarding too much tilting of the 12th-century structure increased.

The city’s mayor Matteo Lepore had said it was necessary to close Piazza di Porta Ravegnana so as to “save” the Garisenda tower. “We’re not intervening because we think it could collapse at any moment, we’re intervening because we want to make it safe and restore it,” he added, as reported by The Guardian.
