In a very unexpected situation, the police caught a 103-year-old woman driving an uninsured car at night in Italy. The woman was driving with an expired driving license and was fined by the police.

The police officers got a call at around 1 am about a car being driven dangerously by someone in the centre of Bondeno.

Bondeno is a town close to Ferrara, a city in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, and has around 13,000 inhabitants.

The police officers who reached the place in the northern Emilia Romagna region were “greatly surprised when they discovered the year of the driver’s birth”, as per the police report.

At least two fans of Brighton and Hove Albion were stabbed in the Italian capital ahead of the English side's Europa League match against Roma, according to Italian media reports.

The two men, said to be in their 20s were stabbed shortly after midnight on Thursday (Mar 7) in the Monti neighbourhood by a group of between six and seven people wearing masks.

The Brighton fans had also their wallets and identity documents stolen by the attackers who inflicted stab wounds on their legs. The city police said the two men had been admitted to a hospital where they were reported to be "OK'.

Officers have said they are looking for the attackers but so far, none of them have been identified.

“We are aware of the incident reported in Italian media last night. Have spoken to both Brighton fans who are OK. We reiterate the advice of the club published on the pre-match info,” Darren Balkham, Brighton’s police liaison officer, wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

In the build up to the match, Brighton had warned its contingent of travelling fans of crime in the Italian capital.

"Street crime, including pickpocketing can take place in Rome. Be vigilant, take sensible precautions and have valid travel insurance," read the advisory issued by the club.

The incident threatens to sour Brighton's first-ever European knockout match as they face last year's beaten finalists, Roma. Managed by Roberto De Zerbi, Brighton have emerged as one of the most entertaining teams on the European circuit.

Italy’s rich archaeological landscape has once again captured the attention of researchers, as a Copper Age cemetery has been unearthed in San Giorgio Bigarello, Northern Italy. This discovery, nestled beneath the earth's surface, offers a glimpse into an important transitional period between the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, shedding light on ancient burial customs and societal structures.

This discovery was made during the construction of a community garden. Housing 22 tombs adorned with a myriad of artifacts, including human remains and weaponry, the site's magnitude exceeded initial expectations, leaving researchers awe-struck at its grandeur.

Insights into burial practices

The tombs, meticulously excavated and studied, bring out the intricate details of Copper Age funerary rituals.

Among the most striking discoveries were the burial accompaniments of flint weapons—daggers, arrowheads, and blades—suggesting a deep-seated connection between weaponry and burial practices within this ancient society.

Amidst the skeletal remains, burial goods such as necklaces crafted from soapstone beads were unearthed, offering glimpses into the cultural and personal adornments of the era.

The exceptional preservation of some tombs, attributed to the sandy hill location of the cemetery, facilitated by dry sand conditions conducive to skeletal conservation, allowed for the meticulous study of these artifacts and their potential significance.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the excavation was the consistent burial orientation observed among many of the skeletons. Positioned on their left sides, with legs bent towards their chests and heads facing northwest, this distinctive burial posture bears striking similarities to burial practices observed in the Remedello culture, suggesting potential cultural connections and influences within the region.

Around 9,000 people, including artists, curators and museum directors have signed an online petition calling for Israel to be excluded from this year’s Venice Biennale art fair often referred to as the “Olympics of the art world” amid the ongoing war in Gaza.

What is the petition about?

The appeal was made by a group called Art Not Genocide Alliance (ANGA) publishing an open letter against Israel’s participation in the Biennale accusing the country of committing “genocide” in Gaza.

Israel has been facing mounting criticism of its military operation in Gaza after the October 7 attack by Palestinian militant group Hamas in southern Israel. Hamas’ attack led to the deaths of 1,200 people and they also took 253 hostages, according to Israeli officials.

Israel, which has since launched a military operation in Gaza, has killed nearly 30,000 people in the Palestinian enclave, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

Israel has repeatedly denied that its actions in Gaza amount to “genocide,” as it continues to garner international criticism, including from the art world.

“Any official representation of Israel on the international cultural stage is an endorsement of its policies and of the genocide in Gaza,” said the ANGA petition, which has been signed by thousands of artists who have participated in the Biennales previously or are expected to take part this year.

“The Biennale is platforming a genocidal apartheid state. No death in Venice. No business as usual,” the statement added.

The Biennale, one of the most prominent events in the international art calendar, is scheduled to take place between April 20 and November 24.

The ANGA also accused the Venice Biennale of a “double standard” as it had previously banned South Africa over its apartheid policy and even excluded Russia after it launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, but has not criticised Israel for its actions.

Israel has a national pavilion in the Venice Giardini or Giardini della Biennale which has hosted the art festival since the first edition in 1895. This year’s edition, “Foreigners Everywhere” is set to host pavilions from 90 countries. Israel will reportedly be represented by artist Ruth Patir.

Italy slams the appeal

Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano said that the appeal was “unacceptable” and a “shameful...diktat of those who believe they are the custodians of truth, and with arrogance and hatred, think they can threaten freedom of thought and creative expression.”

WION: How do you see India-Italy relationship?

Terzi: It is a great pleasure and an honour to be here. ...Let me focus on why I felt this year is not only useful, but necessary for me, and for the institution I am representing here and especially the fourth committee of the Senate of the Italian Republic.

The fourth committee is the committee which is entitled to deal with European Union policies. And therefore, it is strictly in line with the general purpose of Italian foreign security policy nowadays to connect with the Indo-Pacific that is a major point of European strategy and of the Italian strategy.

Last year, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and it was really a landmark event for our country.

I believe, certainly for our bilateral relationship, a Strategic Partnership was signed after many years of partnership, but there was really a further step, a very important step in the relationship between the two countries, focusing on the major geopolitical concerns that our countries are facing together.

And from that meeting and the number of very important commitments which have already been implemented over the last few months - commitment in trade and economic commitment in scientific space co-operation, connectivity, construction of infrastructure and possibility.

Also, that is given to both countries to focus on IMEC. It is a fantastic objective to reach which means really connectivity. Connectivity about trade, and business, but also the most advanced reality which pertains to the high technology.

Data and artificial intelligence also...is something which entails a strong participation and common vision between our two countries.

So, it is a fantastic situation for the political national policies and also from the geopolitical point of view of our countries.

Italy individually as a nation, is very friendly with India and 75 years of diplomatic relations were celebrated last year.

Italy is a very close friend, and always more connected to India. But also Italy as a prominent member of the European Union, the role that Italy is playing in the Mediterranean and the connection, [in] geopolitical sense but also in human terms. From the point of view of history, the connection between the Mediterranean space and the Indo-Pacific then tells a lot about what we are doing now and what we are discussing here in the Raisina Dialogue.

WION: India-Italy relationship has grown by leaps and bounds but when it comes to China, China is one country which is seen as an aggressor, in the region, with India as well. How do you see China? I'm asking this as well because Italy recently withdrew from the BRI as well.

Terzi: From the major organisations to which Italy belongs- the European Union and NATO, but also other organisations, and regional organisations- there is no doubt that China over the last few years has been considered a very important partner and at the same time, a competitor, from which our countries sometimes the impression to be considered as adversity, in geopolitical terms... The fact is that the international order has to be revisited, reviewed, and reformed, but must not be disrupted in any possible way.

The international order means not an order higher than somebody who directs other countries.

It happens in certain circumstances in other parts of the world. But the international order means respect for the treaties that our countries have ratified.

Respect for the multilateral organisation to which we belong, respect for the rule of law, human rights, equality and freedom, freedom of religion, freedom of media and so on.

So in that sense, the fact that both our leaders and our countries are strongly committed through every initiative they are undertaking now in every region, they are deeply engaged in implementing international law.

The implementation of legality tells a lot about a person of our common adventure in the future.

The main leader is 70-year-old Italo De Witt, also called "the German," who became famous in the 1990s for a big bank heist near the Spanish Steps. A cow named Ercolina II received the blessing from Pope Francis during the Sunday Angelus at the Vatican amid widespread farmers' protests across Europe.

Roberto Rosati, spokesperson for Agricultural Redemption, Italy’s tractor-protest movement, said in an official statement: "It was a great surprise to receive an email and call from the pope’s secretary, giving us the approval to enter and attend mass in St Peter’s Square – this is an invitation that happens once in a lifetime. With this blessing, we can find the strength to win the game."

In a symbolic gesture, the farmers pledged to gift Pope Francis a tractor as a token of their appreciation and commitment to their cause. "Our voice will not stop, we will follow the paths of dialogue and perseverance, with dignity and conviction to reach concrete goals," they wrote in a letter to the pontiff.

Italian farmers, joined by their tractors, have staged protests at prominent landmarks in Rome, including the Circus Maximus and the Piazza del Campidoglio. Their grievances mirror those of their European counterparts, for issues such as declining incomes, rising costs, and challenges posed by EU measures addressing the climate crisis.

Ercolina II, the cow at the center of attention, belongs to Cristian Belloni, the owner of a cereal production company. Belloni is currently traveling across Italy with Ercolina II and sees her as an emblem of the farmers' plight.

The pan-Italy march by the cow descended from Ercolina, a key figure in protests against EU milk quotas in the late 1990s, is intended to raise awareness about the challenges faced by farmers.

Belloni recently said Ercolina II was accompanying the farmers on the road "to raise awareness" about the problem, especially "given that an animal brings peace".

Italy's communications watchdog AGCOM said on Friday (Feb 16) that it has compelled TikTok to remove some videos showing a dangerous 'French scar challenge' that has gone viral among youngsters in the country.

The latest online trend involves pinching on cheek to leave a lasting bruise on the cheekbone. The challenge had become popular among the Italian youth last year. Popularity of this dangerous practice had prompted investigation from antitrust authority in the country.

AGCOM said that it directive to TikTok was first implementation of rules passed in December. These rules allow the Italian watchdog to order online platforms to remove "harmful content" with an aim to protect consumers and minors. The watchdog said that TikTok removed the videos within five days as stipulated by the rules

TikTok, the massively popular short-video-sharing app, is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company.

The app, along with American tech giants like Meta are facing heat from regulators from around the world to take steps for protection of children from harmful content.

The narrative came into focus again on Wednesday as New York Mayor Eric Adams announced that his administration had taken social media giants like Facebook and Instagram for stoking mental health crisis among youngsters.

"Over the past decade, we have seen just how addictive and overwhelming the online world can be, exposing our children to a non-stop stream of harmful content and fueling our national youth mental health crisis," Adams said in a statement.

Unprecedented snow-drought conditions in the Italian Alps

The authorities in the northern Italian Alps killed a brown bear deemed “dangerous” to hikers and in light of his “excessive confidence” to frequent urban and peri-urban areas, said the officials on Tuesday (Feb 6). The killing of the two-and-a-half-year-old bear has since sparked protests by animal rights groups and even came under scrutiny of Italy’s environment minister.

What did the provincial authorities say?

The two-and-a-half-year-old male bear identified as “M90” was killed on Tuesday by Trentino forestry officials, said the authorities in the autonomous province of Trento, in a statement.

“M90 was a dangerous animal... in light of his excessive confidence and frequenting of urban and peri-urban areas,” said the officials.

M90 was killed by members of the forestry corps in the Sole Valley in the eastern Alps following the orders of the president of the autonomous province Maurizio Fugatti.

The statement also noted that the bear had followed people on multiple occasions. M90 most recently followed a pair of hikers for more than half a kilometre in January along a forest trail in Mezzana.

The Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) “confirmed the need to remove the M90 bear as soon as possible,” said the statement.

Notably, the province in question has been in the midst of an ongoing debate with environmental groups on what to do about the rise in the population of the once nearly extinct Alpine brown bear.

However, the debate intensified last year when a 26-year-old jogger identified as Andrea Papi was mauled to death along a mountain path close to his village of Caldes by a bear called JJ4.

Environmental groups to protest

In M90’s case the environmental groups have said that the speed with which the order and execution took place, they did not even get the time to seek a stay.

The timing of the decree and the execution “make us think that while the order was being signed, the rifles were already smoking,’’ said Massimo Vitturi of the LAV animal rights group, as quoted by the Associated Press.

The Italian branch of the International Organization for Animal Protection (OIPA) called the decision to cull M90 “short-sighted” and one that “does not protect biodiversity”.

“M90 was a young bear guilty of having been spotted a few times near inhabited areas,” said OIPA in a statement, as per AFP. The environment groups have announced a protest on Saturday (Feb 8) in the provincial capital, Trento.

Italy’s environmental minister, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, in a statement also questioned if culling was the best option and said that “it can’t be the only alternative.” He also called for efforts “to guarantee a peaceful cohabitation in the territory.”

A fugitive boss of one of Italy's most violent mafia has been captured in France, the governments of both countries said on Friday (Feb 2). Marco Raduano was detained on the French island of Corsica, a report by the news agency AFP said. Raduano is on Europol's list of Europe's most wanted criminals. Italian authorities on Friday also announced the detention of Raduano's close aide Gianluigi Troiano, who was picked up near Granada in southern Spain. "The carabinieri's (police's) capture abroad of two dangerous fugitives, Marco Raduano and his right-hand man Gianluigi Troiano represents another major blow to organised crime," Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said, AFP reported. A dramatic escape from prison in 2023 In Feb 2023, Raduano, 40, escaped from a heavily secured prison in Nuoro, Sardinia where he had been serving a 24-year sentence for membership in a criminal organisation, drug trafficking and other crimes. The mafia boss had been living there "quite frugally" on false papers, using a falsely registered stolen vehicle, the source said. Raduano did not resist his arrest. Meanwhile, Troiano escaped from house arrest not far from Foggia in Sept 2021, the Italian police said. With his arrest, Troiano will now have to serve a sentence of nine years and two months in prison. AFP reported that Raduano is also accused of the murder of two men in Foggia in separate incidents in 2017 -- with Troiano also implicated in the latter. (With inputs from agencies)

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday night (Jan 30) called her Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban to express concerns over the mistreatment of a woman from Milan who faces 11 years in prison. Meloni's phone call came hours after the Hungarian ambassador to Italy was summoned to the foreign ministry in Rome.

Images of Ilaria Salis, 39, chained and cuffed by the Hungarian authorities during a court hearing went viral on Italian social media platforms, inviting criticism for the inhumane treatment meted her way. Several front-page headline stories in Italian media carried the image and questioned the Meloni government for keeping mum on the issue.

Giuseppe Conte, leader of Italy’s opposition Five Star Movement also attacked Meloni and said: "An Italian in chains, tied hand and foot in Hungary."

"Giorgia Meloni, we don’t care that Orbán is a dear friend of yours. We need to act with the utmost determination and raise our voices," he added.

Salis was arrested in the capital city of Budapest in February last year during a counter-demonstration against a neo-Nazi rally. She has been charged with conspiracy to commit assault causing grievous bodily harm.

While she has pleaded not guilty, the prosecutors claim that she came to Hungary to "carry out rapid attacks which could cause serious injury against people believed to be far-right".

Museum chief calls Florence a ‘prostitute’, sparks row in Italy

In the streets of the Italian town of Bolzano exists a peculiar menace which has now forced the authorities to take drastic measures. The unwelcome smell of dog poo has prompted the authorities to mandate DNA tests for all canines, requiring owners of an estimated 45,000 dogs to get them registered in a database managed by authorities. In the so-called ‘poo crackdown,’ police will refer to the database to nab the offenders who shy away from cleaning their pet’s poo, with also imposing fines close to $1,000.

The law required the residents of the mountainous Trentino-Alto Adige region to undertake a DNA test for their pets by the end of December 2023. However, only 5,000 owners have complied. Now, the authorities have strictly asked for compliance in the matter by the end of March. Owners who fail to register will have to face hefty fines, according to Paolo Zambotto, director of Bolzano’s veterinary department.

Dog owners voice anger

The law has been met with concerns by dog owners, especially from those who sincerely clean up their pet poo but will have to pay a €65 fee for the test. Some doubt the efficiency of the initiative regarding its cost and management and whether it will take into account the menace coming from stray dogs and dogs owned by tourists.

“It is easier said than done,” Madeleine Rohrer, from the local Greens party, told the newspaper Il Giornale. “It will only be an additional expense for the municipality and for the police, who have many other things to do.”

Animal rights groups oppose the idea

Apart from dog owners, animal rights groups have also opposed the idea, calling it an ‘unjust law.’ Earlier, they had filed a petition to scrap the law before December 31. “The most interesting thing is that many people who don’t have dogs signed the petition,” Filippo Maturi, president of Assopets, an association for the protection of animal owners, was quoted as saying by a local news outlet.

A northern Italian province has ordered DNA test for all dogs in a bid to find their owners and impose a fine on them if they fail to clean up their pet’s poop amid a crackdown on the scourge of dog litter on the streets.

DNA test for dogs

Once the DNA of the dog is collected, the test results will be inserted into a database, which can be used to search for the culprits and their owners.

The database, which is yet to be created, will be accessed by street cleaners and health officials in the autonomous province Bolzano-South Tyrol to check whose abandoned poop is littering the streets of the Italian province after genetically testing it. Subsequently, the owners will be traced and face fines of 50 to 500 euros ($54 to $540).

An estimated 40,000 dogs in the province were required to undergo a DNA test at a veterinary clinic by the end of December 2023 before the initiative was introduced in January.

Any owner who refuses the DNA profiling for their dog, which will be made compulsory by the end of March will be fined between 292 to 1,048 euros ($318 to $1179).

The provincial government covering Bolzano city and surrounding towns is creating the database, said veterinary department director Paolo Zambotto.

Around 10,000 have already been registered. “Bolzano receives a few hundred complaints a year from citizens about improper management of public land. More than half are for dogs,” Zambotto told Reuters.

He added, “Law enforcement could only catch three or four of them because they have to go there and set up some kind of stakeout.”

Not just poop

Arnold Schuler, a provincial councillor told Rai news that the database made using the DNA tests will also be used to identify dogs killed in road accidents or that attacked other animals or people.

“In this way, we are making it easier for everyone to have their pet registered," he said.

Dog owners will be expected to get blood tests done for their dogs, at municipal dog shelters or vet clinics which cost around 60 to over 100 euros ($71 and $109).

Italy on Friday (Jan 12) ruled against the extradition of a priest sought in Argentina on charges of murder and torture during the South American nation's last military dictatorship, the news agency Associated Press reported citing human rights advocates.

Italy on Friday (Jan 12) ruled against the extradition of a priest sought in Argentina on charges of murder and torture during the South American nation's last military dictatorship, the news agency Associated Press reported citing human rights advocates. In Oct last year, Italy's top criminal court approved the extradition of Rev. Franco Reverberi, who served as a military chaplain during Argentina's 1976-1983 military dictatorship. However, Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio ruled against Reverberi's (86) extradition, citing his advanced age and poor health. As per Italy's justice system, the justice minister either abides by or rejects court decisions on extradition. Will Argentina challenge Rome's decision? Speaking to the Associated Press, Jorge Ithurburu, who represents the March 24 human rights advocacy group that has followed the case, said that it would be up to Argentina to decide if it wants to challenge Nordio's decision by going to an Italian administrative court. Also read: Pope calls for universal ban on ‘despicable’ practice of surrogate motherhood The Oct ruling by the Cassation upheld a previous decision by a lower court in Bologna to allow the extradition of the Reverberi. A hearing has been set for next week to formally relieve the 83-year-old priest of the sign-in obligation. The charges against the priest Argentina has been seeking Reverberi for trial on charges including the 1976 slaying of 22-year-old José Guillermo Berón and the torture of several other men. The torture took place in Argentina's Mendoza. Reverberi had emigrated to Argentina from Italy when he was about seven years old. He left Argentina in 2011 after the first trial for crimes against humanity carried out during the dictatorship took place in the western Mendoza province. The testimonies of survivors and family members began to point to his responsibility (for the crimes). In Aug 2023, Italian Justice Minister Nordio initially approved the priest's extradition. But due to a clerical error, Nordio was unaware of Reverberi's appeal against Argentina’s request to have him sent there for trial when he initially OK’d extradition. The appeals process went on, leading to the October ruling of the Cassation and to Nordio’s having a second opportunity to have a final say in the matter. Ithurburu told the news agency that relatives of Berón could conceivably ask Italian prosecutors to pursue a case against Reverberi as an Italian citizen investigated for murder and other charges abroad, in Argentina.
