Pope Francis, on Wednesday (Nov 29) in his first appearance after calling off a visit to Dubai for the COP28 climate summit, asked an aide to read the main text in his place stating that he was "still not well".

"Dear brothers and sisters good morning and welcome. We will continue with the catechesis, but since I am still not well with this flu and (my) voice is not nice, Monsignor (Filippo) Ciampanelli will read," Francis said at his weekly audience, held indoors in the Vatican's Paul IV hall.

The 86-year-old pontiff, who is also coping with a knee ailment, arrived at his Wednesday audience walking, aided by a cane.

The Vatican said in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 28) that Francis was advised by his doctors to not make the trip to Dubai.

The statement said that the pope was dealing with the effects of influenza and lung inflammation.

"Although the Holy Father's general clinical picture has improved with regard to his flu-like condition and inflammation of the respiratory tract, doctors have asked the Pope not to make the trip planned for the coming days to Dubai," Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement.&nbsp;

"Pope Francis accepted the doctors' request with great regret and the trip is therefore cancelled," Bruni said.&nbsp;

However, the Vatican said that Francis still wished to contribute to the discussions and would look into the ways this could be done remotely.

The 86-year-old pontiff was scheduled to begin his three-day visit to Dubai on Friday after the Vatican earlier in a statement said that despite the health issues, the pope was going ahead with the trip.

<h2>Pope Francis calls for continuation of Gaza truce</h2>

Francis called for the continuation of the truce between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip and for all the hostages held captive by the Palestinian militant group during the Oct 7 onslaught to be released.

He also expressed concern over the grave situation being faced by the people in war-torn region saying that there was a shortage of water, bread and the people were suffering.

''Please continue to pray for the grave situation in Israel and Palestine. Peace, please, peace. I wish for the ongoing truce in Gaza to continue, for all hostages to be released, and for access to necessary humanitarian aid to be allowed. I heard from the parish there (in Gaza). There is a shortage of water, a shortage of bread. People are suffering," he said.

"It is the ordinary people who suffer. It is not those who make war who suffer. We ask now for peace. And let us not forget, speaking of peace, the dear Ukrainian people, who still suffer so much in war. Brothers and sisters, war is always a defeat, everyone loses. Not everyone, there is one group that gains a lot, the arms manufacturers. They gain a lot, thanks to the death of others," he further added.

Australia's&nbsp;Davis&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;players have vowed to return to Malaga and claim the title next year after losing a second successive final in the international&nbsp;men's team tournament on Sunday. The Australians had the misfortune to come up against a red-hot Jannik Sinner on Sunday and it was his 6-3 6-0 singles victory over Alex De Minaur that secured a first title for Italy in 47 years and rendered the doubles rubber superfluous.

De Minaur also featured in last year's loss to Canada in the final at the same arena and the world number 12 took solace from how well Australia had performed since the finals format was changed to the best of three rubbers. "There hasn't been another nation that's gone back-to-back in the last two years, so we are showing a pretty good effort collectively," he told reporters.

"We are very, very close and it stinks like hell but, like I said last year in this same position, we'll be back. We'll get this. I mean, we've got a very, very strong future ahead of us." Australia won the last of their 28 titles in 2003 and have reached the last two finals without the talents of Nick Kyrgios, who is currently sidelined by injury and last played&nbsp;Davis&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;in 2019.

Captain Lleyton Hewitt has forged a strong team bond between the likes of De Minaur, world number 40 Alexei Popyrin and the 55th ranked Jordan Thompson as well as the doubles pairing of Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell.

A crestfallen De Minaur conceded he had been outclassed by world number four Sinner in the second singles match after Popyrin had been beaten by Matteo Arnaldi in the opener. "Jannik is riding this amazing wave of confidence ... it's seriously impressive the level he's showing," he added.

"I will find ways to get better, to be able to hurt these types of players. Today I just didn't have enough. I'm disappointed I wasn't able to give the boys a chance to play the doubles, that's probably the biggest disappointment."

On Saturday morning (Nov 25), Turetta landed at Venice airport and was to be transferred to a prison located in the northern city of Verona where he was to be interrogated as part of the investigation, as per the Italian media.

As per the report, Cecchettin’s friends claimed that her decision to end the relationship was not accepted by the&nbsp;family of Turetta. These claims rattled many people across the country.

And in my reading, what is different is her sister, Elena,” said Gamberi.

Responding to Turetta's sympathetic media portrayals, Cecchettin’s older sister Elena accused him of having controlling and possessive behaviour towards her sister.

“She’s fighting back with a very strong determination and anger. And I do think she’s giving voice to a new collective awareness that is really widespread among the younger generation,” said Gamberi.

In what is being hailed as Italy's biggest&nbsp;mafia trial in three decades, an Italian court has delivered convictions and sentences to over 200 people, marking a significant blow against the notorious 'Ndrangheta.

This "maxi trial" concluded after three years in a high-security courtroom in Calabria, specially designed to accommodate the extensive network associated with the powerful organized crime syndicate.

<h2>But first, who form the&nbsp;'Ndrangheta?</h2>

Situated in the southern region of Calabria, the 'Ndrangheta' has established a virtual monopoly on the European cocaine trade, extending its influence globally.

Originating in the impoverished rural area of Calabria, at the southern tip of Italy, its roots date back to at least the country's unification in 1861.

The name 'Ndrangheta, derived from Greek, conveys the notion of valour, and its top members undergo formal initiation ceremonies. Initially regarded as primarily a rural phenomenon, it gained public prominence in the 1980s and 1990s through a series of kidnappings across Italy.

While often overshadowed by the more visible Costa Nostra, 'Ndrangheta affiliates gained notoriety for the kidnapping of the grandson of the US-born oil tycoon John Paul Getty in 1973, a crime that involved the severing of the victim's ear to facilitate a ransom.

Notably, it wasn't until 2010 that Italy officially classified the 'Ndrangheta as a mafia group&nbsp;under the law.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/italy-bans-lab-grown-frankenstein-meat-citing-health-concerns-and-need-to-safeguard-livestock-industry-659640">Also read |&nbsp;Italy bans lab-grown 'frankenstein' meat citing health concerns and need to safeguard livestock industry</a>

<h2>The&nbsp;scale of the 'maxi trial'</h2>

The verdicts bring to a close a trial that has been unprecedented in scale. Held in Lamezia Terme, the courtroom was built to host up to 350 defendants, 400 lawyers, and hear from 900 witnesses.

More than 100 people&nbsp;were acquitted, but the sheer number of convictions makes this a landmark legal victory against a gang&nbsp;&nbsp;that has long held a near-monopoly on the European cocaine trade.

<h2>Origins of the trial: A comprehensive analysis</h2>

The roots of this maxi trial trace back to a comprehensive investigation launched in 2016, covering at least 11 Italian regions.

The culmination of this effort occurred in December 2019 when over 2,500 officers conducted raids focused on suspects in Vibo Valentia, Calabria—the heart of the 'Ndrangheta's Mancuso clan.

<h2>Arrests beyond Italian borders</h2>

This operation went beyond Italy's borders, leading to arrests in Germany, Switzerland, and Bulgaria. Even a former Forza Italia MP, Giancarlo Pittelli, faced an 11-year jail term for aiding a mafia clan.

At the forefront of this legal battle is Nicola Gratteri, an anti-mafia prosecutor who led the investigation. His team's work involved collecting 24,000 wiretaps and intercepted conversations, forming the backbone of the charges brought against the defendants.

<h2>'Ndrangheta's tactics</h2>

The trial provided a chilling glimpse into the ruthless tactics employed by the 'Ndrangheta. Evidence presented showed a pattern of violent attacks, extortion, corruption in public contracts, weapon stockpiling, manipulation of elections, and bribery.

The 'Ndrangheta's stranglehold on local communities became painfully evident, revealing the extent to which the organisation had embedded itself in various aspects of society.

A notable departure from traditional mafia trials was the inclusion of non-mafia people among the defendants. This marked a significant shift in strategy, targeting not just the foot soldiers of the criminal organisation but also high-ranking police officials, mayors, public servants, and businesspeople.

The trial aimed to expose the network of collaborators enabling the 'Ndrangheta's criminal activities.

In what is being hailed as Italy's biggest mafia trial in three decades, an Italian court has delivered convictions and sentences to over 200 people, marking a significant blow against the notorious 'Ndrangheta. This "maxi trial" concluded after three years in a high-security courtroom in Calabria, specially designed to accommodate the extensive network associated with the powerful organized crime syndicate. But first, who form the 'Ndrangheta? Notably, it wasn't until 2010 that Italy officially classified the 'Ndrangheta as a mafia group under the law. Also read | Italy bans lab-grown 'frankenstein' meat citing health concerns and need to safeguard livestock industry The scale of the 'maxi trial' The verdicts bring to a close a trial that has been unprecedented in scale. Held in Lamezia Terme, the courtroom was built to host up to 350 defendants, 400 lawyers, and hear from 900 witnesses. More than 100 people were acquitted, but the sheer number of convictions makes this a landmark legal victory against a gang that has long held a near-monopoly on the European cocaine trade. Origins of the trial: A comprehensive analysis The roots of this maxi trial trace back to a comprehensive investigation launched in 2016, covering at least 11 Italian regions. The culmination of this effort occurred in December 2019 when over 2,500 officers conducted raids focused on suspects in Vibo Valentia, Calabria—the heart of the 'Ndrangheta's Mancuso clan. Arrests beyond Italian borders This operation went beyond Italy's borders, leading to arrests in Germany, Switzerland, and Bulgaria. 'Ndrangheta's tactics The trial provided a chilling glimpse into the ruthless tactics employed by the 'Ndrangheta. The 'Ndrangheta, faces a significant blow as over 200 people receive convictions and sentences in the country's largest mafia trial in three decades. Italy qualified for Euro 2024 after drawing 0-0 against Ukraine in their final Group C qualifier on Monday although the Ukrainians can still secure a spot through the playoffs. European champions Italy finished second, level on 14 points with third-placed Ukraine but with a better head-to-head record after a tense affair that could have gone either way.

The Italians ended six points behind England, who had sealed qualification after beating Italy 3-1 at Wembley in October. Ukraine, who have never beaten Italy, had strong claims for a penalty after Bryan Cristante's clumsy challenge on Mykhailo Mudryk in stoppage time but nothing was given.

They can still book a spot at a fourth consecutive European Championship via the playoffs in March. The playoff draw will take place on Thursday in Nyon. "Ukraine showed that they are an equipped team and they gave us a hard time," Italy coach Luciano Spalletti told Rai Sport. "Today we played a good match because in the first half we had many opportunities to secure the result. Then when we didn't manage to do so the match became dirtier and more physical. "They brought in more physical players but at that moment they no longer played football."

LIVELY START

The match got off to a lively start but both goalkeepers - Italy's Gianluigi Donnarumma and Ukraine's Anatoliy Trubin - held firm in an entertaining clash at BayArena in Leverkusen. Italy, who will make their eighth consecutive appearance at the Euros, had most possession and created more chances but Ukraine remained composed as they looked to counter-attack.

Italy's Federico Chiesa had a chance to break the deadlock in the seventh minute but his effort from inside the box flew narrowly over the bar before Donnarumma denied Ukraine an opener seven minutes later by keeping out Georgiy Sudakov's low shot.

Defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo then nearly nodded home for Italy from a corner just before the half-hour mark before Trubin pulled off a stunning save to deny Davide Frattesi.

Italy continued to dominate after the break but Ukraine's probing increased and Mudryk came close in the 66th minute only to be denied by Donnarumma who pulled off another fine save. "We are very happy," Donnarumma said. "We are where we deserve to be with all the difficulties we had, but thanks to the new coach and staff we are back."

Under Spalletti, who took over from Roberto Mancini in August, Italy have won three times, drawn twice and lost once. They failed to qualify for last year's World Cup in Qatar. The European Championship will be held in Germany.

More than 200 mobsters and their white-collar helpers were convicted by an Italian court on Monday (Nov 20) after nearly a three-year-long trial against the notorious 'Ndrangheta mafia.

More than 200 mobsters and their white-collar helpers were convicted by an Italian court on Monday (Nov 20) after nearly a three-year-long trial against the notorious 'Ndrangheta mafia. According to a report by the news agency AFP, the president of the court in southern Vibo Valentia, Brigida Cavasino, steadily read out the names of the guilty and their sentences, which ranged from 30 years to a few months. The report said that prosecutors asked for sentences totalling nearly 5,000 years for 322 accused mafia members operating in the Calabrian province of Vibo Valentia and their white-collar collaborators. However, after the trial, the court doled out just about half that total time, with convictions of 207 defendants including four seasoned members of the 'Ndrangheta each sentenced to 30 years in jail. The panel acquitted 131 defendants, including 16 for whom prosecutors had recommended acquittal. The largest mafia trial in decades This is the largest mafia trial in Italy in decades and marks the most significant blow to one of the world's most powerful organised crime syndicates. Since the trial started in January 2021, the court heard thousands of hours of testimony, including from more than 50 former mafia operatives turned state witnesses, detailing countless examples of the 'Ndrangheta's brutality and its control over the territory. The accusations against the mafia group included carrying out violent ambushes, shaking down business owners, rigging public tenders, stockpiling weapons, collecting votes, or passing kickbacks to the powerful. However, Luigi Mancuso, the territory's undisputed boss, was cut from the defendants' list last year and will be tried separately. Concerns over low turnout at court The court also handed a 10-year prison sentence to a high-ranking member of the financial police working within Italy's anti-mafia department. AFP reported that the official was guilty of passing along details from judicial investigations to the 'Ndrangheta. Monday's trial was attended by hundreds of lawyers and journalists. Also present at the court was local businessman Rocco Mangiardi who was one of the first people to denounce the 'Ndrangheta for extortion before a judge in 2009. Mangiardi, who has lived under police escort ever since expressed concerns about the low turnout and told AFP that the courtroom should have been full of citizens. "To show the judges that we're on their side and then to tell the mafiosi with their presence 'We don't want you," he added. (With inputs from agencies)

Over 200 Italian mobsters convicted in mafia 'maxi trial'

Hundreds of alleged mobsters will be sentenced Monday by an Italian court, the culmination of a historic, nearly three-year trial against Calabria's notorious 'Ndrangheta mafia.

Prosecutors are asking for guilty verdicts against 322 accused mafia members and their white-collar collaborators in what could mark the most significant blow to date against one of the world's most powerful organised crime syndicates, which enjoys a near-monopoly on the European cocaine trade.&nbsp;

The sentencing will cap Italy's largest mafia trial in decades, a "maxi-trial" in which vast numbers of defendants accused of being part of the same mafia criminal conspiracy face justice.

Hundreds face sentencing in historic Italian mafia trial

Federico Chiesa scored twice as Italy secured a 5-2 home victory against North Macedonia in their Euro 2024 qualifying clash on Friday, giving them an edge ahead of a deciding encounter with Ukraine on Monday for a place at the finals.

The Group C victory means Italy only need a draw against Ukraine to secure second place in the group along with already-qualified England and reach next year’s finals in Germany.

Italy have encountered difficulties in their history with North Macedonia, suffering a 1-0 loss at home in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and later playing a 1-1 Euro qualifying draw in manager Luciano Spalletti's debut as Azzurri coach in September.

"With our quality, sooner or later we do score goals, but there was this danger of counter-attacks that we were never troubled by in the first half but were a couple of times after the break," Spalletti told RAI Sport.

Giacomo Raspadori had a goal disallowed for offside, followed by Chiesa's attempt from a tight angle that was saved by North Macedonia's Stole Dimitrievski.

Italy broke the deadlock after 17 minutes when an unmarked Matteo Darmian headed in a corner at the back post.

After 40 minutes, Italy had a chance to extend their advantage from the penalty spot after Nikola Serafimov's handball but Jorginho's attempt was saved by Dimitrievski.

Chiesa did double the lead four minutes before the break though with a curling shot from the edge of the box.

In first-half stoppage time Italy got a third when Chiesa received a through ball inside the box, eluded a defender and scored with a deflected shot that looped into the top corner.

North Macedonia got back into the match after 52 minutes when Jani Atanasov nodded in a close-range cross before scoring his second with a deflected long-range shot in the 74th.

"The second goal was a big deflection, it was casual, so that changes the psychological aspects of the match," Spalletti said.

"At that point, I think we saw the best of Italy in terms of character and quality as we showed strength to keep going and secure the victory with another two goals."

Italy's Raspadori dashed the visitors' hopes nine minutes from time with a goal from a tricky angle inside the box, while Stephan El Shaarawy added Italy's fifth in stoppage time.

Spalletti was asked if he planned to make changes for the Ukraine game in Leverkusen, Germany.

"As for the next match, we have to see how everyone is doing, but I do not predict that many changes," he said.

Italy overcome North Macedonia, eye Euro 2024 spot in Ukraine showdown

Italy on Thursday became the first European Union nation to ban the production and sale of lab-grown meat. Citing health concerns and a need to safeguard its livestock industry, Italy's lower house approved the ban.

<h2>What is banned?</h2>

The nation has banned the so-called cultivated meat&nbsp;that is grown in labs using animal tissue cells.

It also places a ban on the use of labels that describe plant-based protein as meat. As per AFP, every violation of this ban can chalk up fines ranging from 10,000 to 60,000 euros ($10,900-$65,000).&nbsp;

The law received a green light from Italy's senate earlier. The law says it seeks to "protect the national livestock heritage" while recognising its cultural, socio-economic and environmental value.

It also seeks to ensure "a high level of protection of human health", while protecting the interests of consumers and their right to information about what they are eating.

<h2>Cultivate meat and&nbsp;Italy</h2>

Italy's main agricultural lobby Coldiretti calls lab-grown meat 'Frankenstein' meat. On Thursday, the organisation said the law represents "a commitment to defend the Mediterranean diet".&nbsp;

Italy's Agriculture Minister, Francesco Lollobrigida, said that cultivated meat "interrupts the virtuous relationship between land, man and work that for millennia has accompanied us and allowed us to maintain the land".

However, an Italian non-profit, The International Organisation for the Protection of Animals criticises the law, calling it pointless.&nbsp;

"This ban is completely useless today since cultured meat has not yet been approved for human consumption in Europe and therefore cannot be marketed."

<h2>EU and lab-grown meat</h2>

The European Union, as per AFP,&nbsp;considers lab-grown meat a 'novel food' which means that any new product will be subject to authorisation from the bloc. If the bloc approves cultivated meat, Italy cannot ban it.

As of now, the meat is not allowed to be sold in the EU. However, companies in the US have been raising money for research into the new science.

The law says it seeks to "protect the national livestock heritage" while recognising its cultural, socio-economic and environmental value. It also seeks to ensure "a high level of protection of human health", while protecting the interests of consumers and their right to information about what they are eating. Cultivate meat and Italy Italy's main agricultural lobby Coldiretti calls lab-grown meat 'Frankenstein' meat. On Thursday, the organisation said the law represents "a commitment to defend the Mediterranean diet". Italy's Agriculture Minister, Francesco Lollobrigida, said that cultivated meat "interrupts the virtuous relationship between land, man and work that for millennia has accompanied us and allowed us to maintain the land". "This ban is completely useless today since cultured meat has not yet been approved for human consumption in Europe and therefore cannot be marketed." EU and lab-grown meat The European Union, as per AFP, considers lab-grown meat a 'novel food' which means that any new product will be subject to authorisation from the bloc. If the bloc approves cultivated meat, Italy cannot ban it. As of now, the meat is not allowed to be sold in the EU. However, companies in the US have been raising money for research into the new science. (With inputs from agencies)

WION Business Wrap | Italy’s losses from extreme weather, Foxconn’s sales decline & more

Italy is counting the high cost of extreme weather events that have ravaged the country this year, causing significant damage to urban areas and destroying crops in various regions. The effects of these natural disasters are set to run into billions of euros, with the largest insurance companies already facing claims exceeding €3 billion ($3.2 billion) due to floods and hurricanes that struck Veneto and Emilia Romagna earlier this year, Bloomberg cited a report by Sole 24 Ore.

The recent onslaught of severe weather, including deadly rains in Tuscany and northern regions, has further escalated the financial toll. These rains claimed the lives of seven people and have resulted in damages that have already been estimated at over €300 million, according to the Civil Protection Agency. In response, the Italian government has allocated approximately €5 million in aid with a promise of more to support those affected.

According to Bloomberg, Italian authorities have connected the Tuscany weather event to a worrying trend known as "tropicalisation." These storms came on the heels of Italy experiencing its hottest October on record, according to the agriculture association Coldiretti, which estimates that the cost to Italy's agricultural sector from flooding exceeds €6 billion for the year.

The repercussions of this devastation extend beyond just the impact on crops and harvests; they also affect stocks stored in warehouses that have been inundated, as highlighted by Coldiretti.

As the weather alerts remain active in Tuscany and central Italy, the final financial toll of these disasters is yet to be determined. It will become clearer in the coming days. Nevertheless, the impact on major insurance companies has already been felt through their earnings and forecasts.

In particular, shares of Assicurazioni Generali, one of Italy's largest insurers, took a hit at the end of October as they recorded losses of about €840 million from natural catastrophes, surpassing the annual budget.

Tens of thousands of Roman coins, what appear to be spoils of war, have been discovered in the sea near the northeast coast of Sardinia, the Italian Ministry of Culture&nbsp;said on Saturday (Nov&nbsp;4).&nbsp;The ministry said that the coins date from the early 4th century AD and are mainly a bronze follis type made in the Roman tradition.&nbsp;

The ministry contacted authorities from the Superintendency of Archaeology and the Carabineros after the divers found the treasure among sea grass along the Mediterranean island's north-east coast. Divers from an art protection team and the ministry's undersea archaeology department were dispatched to investigate.&nbsp;

After UK, Italy moves to reduce migrants flow

An Italian judge has issued an order to seize $835.5 million from the short-term rental giant Airbnb on the grounds of alleged tax evasion. This move comes as prosecutors claim that Airbnb failed to collect a 21 per cent&nbsp;tax on roughly €3.7 billion of rental income, which landlords in Italy are obligated to pay.

Airbnb expressed its surprise and disappointment regarding the Italian public prosecutor's actions. BBC quoted Christopher Nutly, an Airbnb spokesperson, who highlighted that the company's European headquarters have been actively engaged with the Italian tax agency to resolve the matter since June. Nutly also stated, 'We are confident that we have acted in full compliance with the law and intend to exercise our rights with respect to this issue.'

In addition to Airbnb as a corporate entity, three individuals who held managerial positions at Airbnb from 2017 to 2021 are under investigation, as revealed by Milan Tribunal prosecutors.

Notably, in 2022, Airbnb challenged an Italian law that required the company and other short-term rental providers to withhold 21% of rental income from landlords and remit it to tax authorities. Airbnb argued that these requirements violated the European Union's principle of freedom to provide services across its 27 member countries. However, the EU's highest court ultimately ruled in favor of Italy's taxation requirements.

In recent years, Italian authorities have intensified their scrutiny of the tax practices of major companies operating within the country, including Airbnb. Netflix and Meta have also faced tax-related inquiries, according to media reports.

Highlighting their commitment to addressing this issue, Italian politicians have announced plans to crack down on landlords who do not pay taxes on short-term rentals facilitated by platforms like Airbnb. The co-ruling Forza Italia party is spearheading efforts to introduce a national identification code for short-term rentals, which, they estimate, could potentially boost Italy's fiscal revenue by €1 billion.

Bottomline

The Italian legal system's decision to seize $835.5 million from Airbnb raises concerns about the company's tax practices in the country. Airbnb, which has been operating in Italy since 2008, disputes the allegations and insists it has been working diligently to comply with Italian tax laws. The broader implications of this case extend to other major tech companies, as Italian authorities are also investigating Netflix and Meta for similar tax-related issues.

Furthermore, Italian politicians are taking a proactive stance by planning to implement a national identification code for short-term rentals. This move is seen as a potential solution to address tax evasion by landlords and increase the country's fiscal revenue significantly. The outcome of this case will likely set a precedent for how tech companies navigate taxation regulations across the European Union.

Airbnb's Italian Job: Seizure of $835.5 million sparks tax evasion storm

Trigger warning: Some readers may find the details of this report disturbing. Discretion is advised

Roman actress Sibilla Barbieri has ended her life in Switzerland. The 58-year-old actor and director last week chose assisted suicide across the border&nbsp;after authorities denied her request in her home country, Italy.

<h2>Why was Sibilla Barbieri seeking assisted suicide?</h2>

As per Vanity Fair Italy, the actress was suffering from terminal cancer for 10 years. Barbieri was completely dependent on oxygen therapy and pain medications, which, if interrupted, would have led to a painful death.

Given the severity of her condition, she had requested assisted suicide back in July, but her application was rejected.

In mid-September, Barbieri's health company replied to her request, stating that the medical team had considered that the woman lacked the requirement of dependence on life-sustaining treatment.

Talking to the press, Filomena Gallo, the actress' lawyer, revealed that Barbieri was told that her "current conditions are not consistent with intolerable physical suffering".

The healthcare provider also said that her condition did not fulfil conditions established by the Constitutional Court in 2019 for such cases.

<h2>How the suffering woman chose to end her life</h2>

Denied the request, Barbieri chose to end her suffering in a foreign land. She was accompanied to Switzerland by her son and Marco Perduca, of the Luca Coscioni Association, which works for human rights and civil liberties.

In a video&nbsp;statement addressed to 'all politicians' posted 19 hours ago by&nbsp;Luca Coscioni, Barbieri alleged of, "very serious discrimination between cancer patients and those who also find themselves in other non-terminal conditions."

"For this reason, I freely decided to get help by going to Switzerland because I have the necessary 10 thousand euros and I can still go physically."&nbsp;

"But all the other people condemned to die from an illness that they can't because they don't have the means, because they are alone, or they don't have the information, how do they do it? This is another serious discrimination which the State must remedy," she added.

<h2>Italy's assisted suicide law</h2>

In Italy, active euthanasia is a crime and a punishable offence under Article 579 (Murder of a consenting person) or Article 580 (Instigation or aid to suicide) of the penal code.&nbsp;

However, terminally ill patients can request assisted suicide, i.e. indirect help of a doctor to die. This was introduced in 2019 after a landmark judgement involving Fabiano Antoniani aka DJ Fabo, who, after a major road accident, was left tetraplegic — unable to voluntarily move the upper and lower parts of the body.&nbsp;

Marco Cappato, former member of the European Parliament, assisted DJ Fabo in availing&nbsp;medically assisted suicide, by driving him to a Swiss clinic. Afterwards, Cappato was put on trial, but the Italian Constitutional Court urged the Parliament to decriminalise assisted suicide and the former MP was acquitted.

So far, with the support of the Luca Coscioni Association, five Italian citizens have received a green light for assisted dying.

Trigger warning: Some readers may find the details of this report disturbing. Discretion is advised Roman actress Sibilla Barbieri has ended her life in Switzerland. The 58-year-old actor and director last week chose assisted suicide across the border after authorities denied her request in her home country, Italy. Why was Sibilla Barbieri seeking assisted suicide? As per Vanity Fair Italy, the actress was suffering from terminal cancer for 10 years. Barbieri was completely dependent on oxygen therapy and pain medications, which, if interrupted, would have led to a painful death. Given the severity of her condition, she had requested assisted suicide back in July, but her application was rejected. In mid-September, Barbieri's health company replied to her request, stating that the medical team had considered that the woman lacked the requirement of dependence on life-sustaining treatment. The healthcare provider also said that her condition did not fulfil conditions established by the Constitutional Court in 2019 for such cases. How the suffering woman chose to end her life Denied the request, Barbieri chose to end her suffering in a foreign land. She was accompanied to Switzerland by her son and Marco Perduca, of the Luca Coscioni Association, which works for human rights and civil liberties. In a video statement addressed to 'all politicians' posted 19 hours ago by Luca Coscioni, Barbieri alleged of, "very serious discrimination between cancer patients and those who also find themselves in other non-terminal conditions." "But all the other people condemned to die from an illness that they can't because they don't have the means, because they are alone, or they don't have the information, how do they do it? This is another serious discrimination which the State must remedy," she added. × Italy's assisted suicide law In Italy, active euthanasia is a crime and a punishable offence under Article 579 (Murder of a consenting person) or Article 580 (Instigation or aid to suicide) of the penal code. An Italian model has decided to sue five grown-up children of Silvio Berlusconi after they announced to cut off cash payments allegedly promised by the former prime minister of Italy to her and other bunga bunga party-goers, according to a report by the Telegraph.

‘Bunga Bunga parties’ refer to the sex scandals that Berlusconi was involved in and that caused him to tender his resignation in 2011.

Berlusconi, who died in June, promised to offer monthly payments and accommodation to at least 20 models and dancers in the name of “reputational damage” they suffered after becoming embroiled in his sex scandals.

But last week it was reported that Silvio Berlusconi’s children are now moving to stop the $2,000 a month payments and forcing eviction of the women&nbsp;from their houses by the end of the year.

Alessandra Sorcinelli, one of the women, has vowed to drag the matter to the court, claiming that she suffered irreparable damage to her image and deserves financial help.

She also claimed that an agreement was reached between her and the former PM in 2015, which had “no expiry date”.

She and the other young women had endured “12 years of mud-slinging”, ever since the bunga bunga scandals emerged in 2011, Sorcinelli was quoted by The Telegraph as saying.

The former PM and billionaire businessman was accused of paying young women to perform stripteases and entertain him at his villa near Milan, his residence in Rome and his sprawling coastal holiday home in Sardinia.

The Philippines has delivered a significant blow to China's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)&nbsp;by opting to exit the trillion-dollar infrastructure project of President Xi Jinping.

The announcement followed a recent collision between a Philippines boat and a Chinese coastguard vessel in the South China Sea. Furthermore, China's military alleged that a Philippines military ship entered waters near Scarborough Shoal without permission.

The Philippines' decision comes on the heels of the grand Belt and Road Initiative Summit in Beijing&nbsp;where &nbsp;President Xi &nbsp;welcomed leaders and delegates from over 140 nations to commemorate the project's decade-long journey.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/philippines-radio-broadcaster-shot-dead-inside-studio-president-orders-probe-655372">Philippines'</a> Department of Transportation has announced the "full termination" of several major infrastructure projects previously partnered with China.&nbsp;

Instead, the Philippines is turning to Japanese and other Western counterparts, signalling the uphill battle that many of China's key investment initiatives face in the country due to a mix of economic and political factors.

This decision also accentuates the ongoing friction between the Philippines and China regarding their territorial disputes in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/china-philippines-vessels-collide-us-china-violated-international-law-650384">South China Sea</a>.

"Manila has to contend with serious public anger against China's claims over and capture of Philippines territory in the South China Sea. Its run-ins against Filipino vessels in these waters indicate a complete lack of respect for international law as well as of Filipino interests," Dr Jabin Jacob, Associate Professor, Department of International Relations and Governance Studies, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, told WION.&nbsp;

"China is unambiguously playing the bully, attempting to coerce the Philippines into accepting Chinese power in the South China Sea. Under the circumstances, Manila, took a clear and decisive step of its own - one that is calculated to show up China's foreign policy in general and its pet project of the BRI, in particular," notes Dr Jacob.&nbsp;

Jaime Batista, the Philippine Transportation Secretary, announced the dropping of $4 billion in Chinese infrastructure projects, which involved two railway projects in Luzon and Mindanao.

"We have three projects that won't be funded by the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/china-decries-bidens-vow-to-defend-philippines-if-its-attacked-651494">Chinese</a> government anymore. We can't wait forever, and it seems like China isn't that interested anymore," Batista said during a forum organised by European investors in Manila.&nbsp;

Based on the latest data from the China Global Investment Tracker, China's participation in the BRI has seen investments well below its decade-long average of $94 billion since the beginning of 2020.

A mere few weeks ago, Italy, the singular G7 member engaged in the BRI, declared its plan&nbsp;to discontinue its participation by the end of the year, citing unmet project expectations.

"Apart from a bilateral cost-benefit analysis - BRI projects often promise a great deal more than they actually deliver," says Dr Jacob.&nbsp;

According to a report by Bloomberg, the overall activity within the BRI has decreased significantly by 40 per cent from its peak in 2018, primarily due to economic troubles in China and the debt issues affecting participating nations.

Storm Ciaran: Death toll rises to 16 after heavy rain and record winds batter Western Europe

The famous Medici Chapel of Florence will finally be allowing four visitors at a time to enter the long-hidden secret room in the Chapel which is said to have charcoal drawings on its walls, some of which have been attributed to Michelangelo.

The secret room, which is 10-by-3 metres (33-by-10 feet) in size, was first found in 1975 when officials started searching for the Medici Chapel's new exit to accommodate increasing visitors.

The then-director of the museum Paolo Dal Poggetto “firmly believed that they were by Michelangelo,’’ stated Paola D’Agostino, the current director. The paintings of Michelangelo have been under fierce debate which continues to this day.

“The major scholars of Michelangelo’s drawings dismissed the attributions” at the time it was discovered 50 years ago, she stated. “Others had a more moderate view, in the sense they thought that some could be by Michelangelo and others could be by followers. So the debate is ongoing,” she added.

Till 1955, the room was used for storing coal after which it was sealed and forgotten for years underneath a trapdoor, which remained hidden by furniture. The drawings on the walls were also discovered under two layers of plaster.

As per the theory proposed by Dal Poggetto, Michelangelo had hidden in the tiny space from “the wrath of Pope Clement VII” after he had supported a short-lived republic which overthrew the Medicis. In the room, the artists had sketched studies for a few of his projects.

<h2>Secret room remained 'hidden' for 50 years</h2>

The artwork on the wall includes sketches which are said to be the legs of Giuliano de’ Medici, which is near the entrance of the secret room. For the last 50 years, the room's access has remained restricted.

It was decided by the officials that the room would be opened to the public on a limited basis, and the works would be placed in extended periods of darkness after long exposure to LED lights for protection.

The secret room will be opened from November 15 and 100 visitors will get access every week through reservation, four at a time. The visitors will get to spend a maximum of 15 minutes inside the room.

“This place grants today’s visitors the unique experience of being able to come into direct contact not only with the creative process of the maestro, but also with the perception of the formation of his myth as a divine artist,” stated Francesca de Luca, curator of the Museum of the Medici Chapels, in a statement.

Meanwhile, Agostino said that restoration has been “time-consuming, constant and painstaking work.”

Florence chapel to allow visitors inside 'secret room' filled with Michelangelo's works

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni got tricked by Russian pranksters who posed as head of the African Union Commission. The pranksters involved in the incident are well-known Russian "comedians" - Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexei Stolyarov, also known as Vovan and Lexus.&nbsp;

During the hoax call, Meloni touched upon a range of topics from the response of European leaders on war in Ukraine to the issue of increasing migrant arrivals on Italy's shores.&nbsp;

The incident came to light when the 13-minute-long spoof call was released online on Wednesday (Nov 1) by the two Russian pranksters.&nbsp;

Vovan and Lexus are known widely for pranking top world leaders, including Polish president Andrzej Duda, former UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel.&nbsp;

Speaking about the Russia-Ukraine war, Meloni, who spoke in English, said that the European leaders have a "lot of fatigue."&nbsp;

"I see that there is a lot of fatigue, I have to say the truth, from all the sides. We (are) near the moment in which everybody understands that we need a way out," she said adding, "The problem is to find a way out which can be acceptable for both without destroying the international law."

According to Meloni's office, which released a statement about the call, showed regret and said that the conversation took place on September 18.&nbsp;As per the statement, the talks took place ahead of the meetings with African leaders at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

<h2>Migrants issue&nbsp;</h2>

The Italian PM also deplored European leaders for their stance on the migrant issue.

Commenting on Italy's position over the migrants influx from across the Mediterranean, Meloni said, "They do all agree that only Italy has to solve this problem alone. It's a very stupid way of thinking."

Italian PM Meloni tricked by Russian pranksters posing as top official in spoof call

The square which surrounds the medieval “leaning tower” in the Italian city of Bologna will remain closed for“a few years” as concerns regarding too much tilting of the 12th-century structure increased.

The city’s mayor Matteo Lepore said it was necessary to close Piazza di Porta Ravegnana so as to “save” the Garisenda tower. “We’re not intervening because we think it could collapse at any moment, we’re intervening because we want to make it safe and restore it,” he added, as reported by The Guardian.

The future of the 48-metre-high Garisenda, which stands alongside the twice-as-high Asinelli tower, has remained a topic of huge discussion in the Emilia-Romagna city after the University of Bologna's scientists detected an anomalous increase in the oscillation of the tower.

The Garisenda is slanted at 4 degrees which is a little more than Italy's famous Leaning Tower of Pisa which is at 3.9 degrees. It is believed that the tower is slanting because of ground subsidence during the 14th century.

The officials are monitoring the tower for cracks and sensors were installed so that the shift can be tracked.

Its foundations will be shored up with new materials to make the structure more secure. The Asinelli Tower, which visitors are allowed to climb, has also been closed.

<h2>Mayor gives reassurance as people fear the collapse of tower</h2>

Bologna council is establishing a special committee to oversee the Garisenda’s restoration. “I will seek the best possible professionalism, nationally and internationally … we will look for anyone who can help us,” Lepore said.

However, even though the mayor had a reassuring tone, the residents of Bologna feared that the tower could collapse someday.

“I am afraid to think about losing something that is part of the city’s soul,” said Carlo Lucarelli, an author and screenwriter, while speaking to Corriere della Sera. “I’ve always taken the two towers for granted, but with affection, in the same way you might take the presence of a brother for granted,” Lucarelli added.

Meanwhile, actor and film director Giorgio Diritti said, “I’m worried from many perspectives, especially the fact that this news has come as a surprise. But how can it be a surprise if the tower has been monitored for years?”

Diritti said that, if the tower really collapsed someday, he would be ready to go there “to hold the tower up”.

Medieval 'leaning tower' in Italian city tilting too much, to remain closed for few years

Rome, just like Paris, is synonymous with all things cultural, steeped in history. A Roman holiday may well be on the top of amorous couples' travel wishlist. But the residents of the city are dealing with a problem that was not present as they freely roamed around their own city.

Hornets! Big ones! And non-native.

The Guardian reported an incident where a man dining on his friend's terrace encountered a swarm of these hornets. And despite the valiant efforts of his friends to ward off or kill the bees, one bit him and hurt his leg to the extent that he had to use crutches to walk.

Media reports say that the numbers of Vespa orientalis, an oriental hornet usually found in Africa and Southeast Asia, are growing in the Italian capital.

The reddish-brown hornet was reportedly first detected in Monteverde district of Rome in the year 2021. This was the first time these hornets were spotted since 1950s.

After 2021, the hornets have seemingly invaded the centre of the city and in addition to windows and air conditioning units, the insects are building nests in the crevices of ancient monuments as well.

The city has not come up with an official plan yet to tackle the growing problem. And this has led to increased demand for people who can remove these nests.

Andrea Lunerti, a zoologist and now well-known wasp-buster is witness to this.

“I am receiving so many calls at the moment, from everywhere,” Lunerti told The Guardian.&nbsp;

“People are seeing these big insects flying around – and the nests are huge, sometimes containing between 700 and 1,000.”

The problem is serious. Last week a window cleaner died after falling off his ladder as a hornet swarm attacked him.

The rising temperatures are probably allowing these hornets to thrive. And also, Rome's perennial problem with waste disposal isn't helping.

“Rome is a very dirty city with the worst management of urban waste – there are open bins everywhere,”&nbsp;Lunerti said.
