"When we were in the U-19s, we used to count how much money we had. We used to eat food. When we used to go to the U-19s, we used to save our travel allowances and take them with us. So, Virat Kohli is different for everyone. He is different for me," he added.

Ishant went on to say that their interactions rarely involve talks about cricket but it's all about humour and banter.&nbsp;"When we meet, we never talk about how we played so many Test matches. We never talk about it. We talk about funny jokes. This is happening, that is happening, look at this, look at that. Funny jokes," he remembered.
"I have never felt that he is Virat Kohli. For us, he is Cheeku. We have always seen it like this. He has also seen me like this. We shared rooms and so many memories," he added.
Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans will play against Delhi Capitals on Sunday (May 18) at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium. Gujarat are currently at top of the table with 16 points from 11 matches and need just one win to secure their spot in the playoffs.

We have meetings in the corridor, we discuss batters in the bus, that this batter can do this, or that, and this or that can happen.&rdquo;
&ldquo;So we never actually formally talk about meetings. In our meetings, we drink tea and coffee. So our meeting is not a formal meeting where we discuss batters, that we will do this, we will do that. It's a very chill atmosphere, and it&rsquo;s not just with me, but with everyone,&rdquo; he signed off.

India are set to tour Australia later this year, for a five-match Test series; i.e. the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. During the 2018/19 tour, Virat Kohli-led India created history, becoming the first-ever Asian team to win a Test series on Australian soil. During the second Test, of the four-match series, in Perth, there was a heated argument between Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja. While it was a disagreement over the two teammates on the field, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra recently revealed that the Australian broadcasters purposely made a big deal out of the argument to create a controversy versus India.&nbsp;

Talking in a podcast on 2 Sloggers YouTube channel, Chopra said, "This is one thing I learnt when I travelled to Australia in 2018 for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for a commentary stint with Channel 7. Generally, we were taught to stay neutral in commentary. India won the first Test there and lost the second, and then I understood that when India plays in Australia, they don't play against the Australian team only but against a whole country, which includes their whole press."

<h2>'When Ponting tore into the Indian team, I was stunned...'</h2>

He further mentioned, "They used to release videos - they did it in front of me when Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja had a heated exchange with each other while standing in the 30-yard circle. The broadcasters amped up the stump mic as they were abusing each other. They cut the clip and shared it with the press in front of me. After that, when we were talking off the field, I was like, what are we actually trying to achieve because it's nothing? Then Ricky (Ponting) was there with us, and he said that 'making a mountain out of a molehill'. The moment he went into the air, he tore into the Indian team, and I was stunned that he had just said something else a few minutes back."

Ishant vs Jadeja: SHOCKING! Aakash Chopra reveals how Australian broadcasters created controversy vs India

Delhi Capitals might have found their rhythm back with successive wins this season in IPL, their assistant coach, Pravin Amre, has revealed the return date for two superstars – Ishant Sharma and David Warner.

Delhi Capitals might have found their rhythm back with successive wins this season in IPL, their assistant coach, Pravin Amre, has revealed the return date for two superstars – Ishant Sharma and David Warner. While lanky seamer Ishant struggles with his ageing back, Warner has been absent from the scene since April 12 with a thumb injury. Speaking to the media after his side’s 10-run win against Mumbai Indians at home, the other day, Amre said Ishant will return to full fitness in one week, and Warner could take longer to get a clearance certificate, thus expected to be back in time during the fag end of the tournament. "Warner will take 1-2 weeks to recover. His scans revealed an injury," Amre said. "Ishant has been having back spasms. He will also take a week to recover. By the time we return to Delhi he will be fit,” he continued. ALSO READ: T20 World Cup: Agarkar, Rohit to have informal meeting on team selection in Delhi as deadline date nears However, in Warner’s absence, his compatriot Jake Fraser-McGurk opened the batting and made this tournament his own with his exploits. The young right-hander has scored three fifties in five contested matches thus far, striking at 237.50. He was the architect for Delhi’s win over Mumbai at home, smashing 84 off 27 balls at the top. Speaking highly of him, Amre said with Jake playing for the Dubai Capitals (ILT20) and impressing everyone there, Delhi’s scouting team was keen on having him on the board for the Indian Premier League. "He played three games for Dubai Capitals [in the ILT20], and our scouting team was very keen to have him [for the IPL]," Amre said. "Once we got an opportunity to have a replacement, even though we had a choice between a couple of players, we picked him. He played just three innings [in the ILT20] before leaving to play for Australia, but even in that, he played a couple of match-winning innings. Those knocks were something special. Given he is a young, exciting cricketer, we decided to back him,” he continued. Special talent! Roped in as an injury replacement, McGurk had to wait for the first five games to make his IPL debut and since made headlines with his match-winning knocks. "Yes, he had to wait for four-five games before getting a chance," Amre said. "But even when we were watching him in the nets, he had something different, that X-factor. Even today (on Saturday), he, just opened up the game, and, because of his innings, we were 92 for no loss after six overs." "He is a natural. If you see his set-up, he believes in a stable base. And he has excellent hand speed. And when you are batting in the Powerplay, you have only one fielder on the leg side. So, that's a good area to hit; even a mis-hit can get you a boundary,” Amre said of McGurk. Meanwhile, as things stand, Delhi jumped into the top five on the points table with five wins and as many losses in 10 contested matches thus far, looking strong to press their case for a playoff finish this season. Delhi will next face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Monday (April 29) in an away game before hosting Rajasthan Royals on May 7.

For them, it all started at the top with Sunil Narine once again batting explosively after opening the batting. Narine scored a belligerent 85 off just 39 balls, hitting seven fours and as many sixes. Narine's opening partner Phil Salt although was dismissed early, scoring 18 off 12.

KKR sent debutant Angkrish Raghuvanshi to replace Salt and the rookie blazed his way to 54 off just 27 balls. Towards the end, Rinku Singh also teed off for 26 in eight balls.

Chasing the mammoth total, DC were never in the hunt after being reduced to 33/4 inside five overs. Skipper Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubbs then added 93 runs for the fifth wicket in just 47 balls to give Delhi a glimmer of hope.&nbsp;

After Pant (55 off 25) and Stubbs (54 off 32 balls) got out, DC were effectively done in the game. They were finally bowled out for 166 in 17.2 overs, losing the game by 106 runs.

For KKR, Vaibhav Arora and Varun Chakravarthy took three wickets each while Mitchell Starc chipped in with two. Narine was aptly judged Player of the Match for his 85 and a wicket.&nbsp;

This was KKR's third win in three matches and they now sit atop the points table. DC, on the other hand, have slipped to the ninth place in the 10-team table with one win and three losses in four games.

Mayank Yadav has been the find of IPL 2024. The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) pacer has been a sensation even as he played just two games so far but has made maximum noise in the ongoing edition. He won the Player-of-the-Match award on debut, versus Punjab Kings (PBKS), for his 3 for 27. In his following game, versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Tuesday evening (April 2) in Bengaluru, the 21-year-old ended with 3 for 14 -- once again being the Player-of-the-Match -- and bowled the fastest ball of the season (156.7 kph), having already clocked the 155kph-mark on debut.

After his performance versus RCB, Mayank revealed the advice he got from his senior Indian pacers Ishant Sharma and Navdeep Saini. The Lucknow speed merchant stated that Ishant asked him never to compromise on speed going ahead.&nbsp;

Speaking on Jio Cinema, he said, "All the bowlers I spoke to in Delhi, Ishant bhai and Saini bhai, they all told me that even if I wanted to try anything new, I should play around my speed. If I want to add a new skill, it should be around my speed and that I don't need to add any skills that could compromise my speed."

Mayank further shared that he never pays attention on speed but is focussed on getting wickets. He added, "My attention isn't on speed as much as it is on taking wickets and contributing to the team by taking wickets. However, it's always in the back of my mind that when I am bowling deliveries, I need to put pace behind them. After a match, I always ask people what the highest speed was but during the match, I am only focussed on my bowling."

Mayank-starrer LSG will now gear up to host the Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday afternoon (April 7) in Lucknow. The KL Rahul-led side are at the fourth spot after two wins from three encounters.&nbsp;

Rishabh Pant’s return to competitive cricket was the talking point in the lead-up to Delhi Capitals’ first match of IPL 2024 against Punjab Kings on Saturday (March 23). However, it didn’t end to his liking, as Punjab won the clash by four wickets at their new home stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh.&nbsp;

Reflecting on his anticipated return to the cricket field after nearly 450 days, Pant said he felt nervous, not for the first time, adding he was happy about making his comeback following a dreadful road accident on December 30, 2022.&nbsp;

"Personally, I was pretty nervous, but you have to go through this when you enter the field," Pant said after the game.&nbsp;

"But this isn't the first time you're feeling nervous. Happy about [returning to the game], but at the same time, I think we had a par score but because we were one bowler short, because of Ishant's injury, but can't do much about it,” DC captain added.

He also accounted for Jonny Bairstow’s run-out in the same over but twisted his ankle while fielding later, playing no further part in the game.&nbsp;

His injury meant DC was a bowler-less, and Mitchell Marsh and Sumit Kumar were used to compensate for that.

"Ishant injury was clearly evident on the field because we were anyway playing with one bowler short after we lacked with the bat a little bit," Pant said when asked where the game went away from them.&nbsp;

"But, end of the day, when Abishek [Porel] came in, he chipped in with a few runs, which were very crucial. But at the same time, we were a little short on the extra bowling, and he [Ishant] got injured. I think that was the part where we lacked. Because I think the boys actually pulled it back in the end, but it's part and parcel of the game,” DC’s captain added.&nbsp;

Veteran Indian pacer Ishant Sharma opined on the difference in captaincy between Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni and stated that the latter had groomed Indian bowlers before he stepped aside as the Test captain and handed over the reins to Kohli. Under Dhoni, India won 27 out of 60 Tests and led the side to the No. 1 ranking for the first time in late 2009. Kohli then went on to take the mantle forward and led exceptionally well to end with 40 wins from 68 Tests, the most by any Indian skipper. Recently, Ishant pointed out that while Kohli was very aggressive and defined the roles of every bowler, he was given a well-groomed bowling unit by his predecessor.

<h2>'What Dhoni did was groom the bowlers and left them with Virat'</h2>

Speaking to JioCinema, Ishant said, "He was the best. When Virat was captain, bowling was complete. When we were playing under Mahi&nbsp;bhai, we were in a transition phase. At that time, Shami and Umesh were new, and only I was there. Everyone else would rotate. Bhuvi was also new. There is no match for Mahi&nbsp;bhai&nbsp;as a communicator. But what he did was groom the bowlers and leave them with Virat. Shami and Umesh, over time, became different bowlers and then Jasprit came in. So, he got a complete package. The best thing he did was identify everyone’s traits, that he used to talk about one thing with one person and then Iet them be."

<h2>'I realised Kohli wanted all of us to think out of the box'</h2>

Ishant then shifted focus to Kohli as a Test captain and lauded the star batter's approach. "First thing, he was aggressive. If you’re bowling with the new ball, you can concede 25 runs in five overs as long as you take two wickets. The important thing was that he gave everyone defined roles. He used to tell me, ‘You have played enough matches, it’s now time for you to step up. Don’t bowl thinking you have to bowl in a particular area, now you have to find ways of getting wickets’. He went to Shami and said, ‘I know you can take wickets, but now I need you to bowl consistently. That you can bowl three overs as maidens’. He went to Bumrah and said, ‘This is your debut, you do what you do, but consistency is most important in Test cricket’. After 2021, I realised he wanted all of us to think out of the box," the 34-year-old added.

Under Dhoni, India was a dominant Test side at home but had only limited success overseas (such as a Test series win in New Zealand, and a 1-1 series draw versus hosts South Africa).&nbsp;Kohli-led national side remained lethal in familiar conditions and registered some famous wins while on the road (for instance, the 2-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph versus Australia in Australia, an unassailable 2-1 series lead versus England in the 2021 English summer, etc).

Dhoni groomed them and handed over to Kohli: Ishant Sharma on smooth transition of Indian bowlers

Rishabh Pant is still recovering months after being in&nbsp;a horrific car accident on December 30, 2022. As per the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) recent release, the 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has started batting and keeping wickets in the nets in the National Cricket Academy (NCA). While he may be recovering at a rapid pace, he is likely to miss the forthcoming ODI World Cup&nbsp;at home, as the board will be eager to not rush his return. As per Ishant Sharma, India's veteran pacer, Pant may also miss next year's Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ishant, who is part of the commentary panel for the India-West Indies Tests, feels Pant might not play next year's IPL as well. In his absence, his franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) was led by David Warner this year and the one-time runners-up failed to reach the playoffs. They finished at the ninth spot with five wins from 14 encounters.&nbsp;

<h2>'Not easy for a wicketkeeper and batter'</h2>

"I feel we might not see Rishabh Pant in the next IPL as well because it is not a small injury. It was a very serious accident. He has just started batting and wicketkeeping and to run and turn after that, there are a lot of things, which is not easy for a wicketkeeper and a batter," Ishant told Jio Cinema.

Ishant, who has represented India in 105 Tests, added, "The good thing is that he didn't have a second surgery. If he had undergone a second surgery, he would have been out for even longer. He has had one surgery now but I don't think he will be fit for the World Cup for sure. Hopefully, if he gets fit for the IPL, it will be great."

Apart from Pant, India have several injury concerns at the moment. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Prasidh Krishna are also in recovery mode from their respective injuries ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup at home, to be held in October-November this year.&nbsp;

Pant's ardent fans will hope for his quick return but the Indian team will like to take it slowly with him, post his horrific car crash. The star player remains India's preferred keeper-batter across formats and his return is keenly awaited. Talking about his IPL franchise, the DC unit will hope for him to return in IPL 2024 as his absence was severely felt by them in this year's edition.

'Might not see Rishabh Pant in IPL 2024' - India pacer on star player recovering after horrific car crash

Yashavi Jaiswal entered record books as he became the 17th Indian to score a Test century on debut, on Thursday (July 13), during Day Two of the first Test between India and West Indies in Dominica. Jaiswal started his innings with a lot of confidence and while he was more cautious on Day Two, he never looked out of sorts and reached the three-figure mark without dropping much sweat.

At stumps on Day Two, Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 143 and must be eyeing the 200-run mark in his first-ever appearance in the red-ball format. After reaching a historic hundred, Jaiswal has been flooded with several congratulatory messages in the cricketing fraternity. Ishant Sharma, the cricketer-turned-commentator, also heaped praise on the 21-year-old and made a big claim.&nbsp;

<h2>'Jaiswal&nbsp;is absolutely ready to play Tests in England and Australia'</h2>

Speaking to JioCinema, Ishant -- a veteran of 105 Tests -- said, "According to me, he is absolutely ready to play Tests in England and Australia because if you see this innings as well, all the boundaries he hit, especially against the new ball, they all came with cut or pull shots."

“It is a great sign for an opening batter when he refrains from playing a cover drive to a full delivery. If you play the cover drive, there is a chance of you getting caught behind or in the slips,” Ishant added.

Jaiswal stitched a mammoth 229-run opening stand with captain Rohit Sharma (103) -- India's highest opening partnership against the Windies in the format -- before Hitman departed whereas Shubman Gill, at No. 3, fell cheaply. The day's play ended with Jaiswal and Virat Kohli (36 not out) taking India's score to 312 for 2, leading the home side by 162 runs after they were all out for 150 on Day One.

WI vs IND: 'He is ready to play Tests in Australia and England' - Ishant heaps praise on Yashasvi Jaiswal

India have kicked off their campaign in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle with a bang. Taking on West Indies, in the two-match Test series opener in the Caribbean island, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. bundled out the hosts for 150 and are in a commanding position at stumps on Day Two, being well-placed at 312 for 2. Yashasvi Jaiswal, on Thursday (July 13), became the 17th Indian to slam a century on Test debut.&nbsp;

With Jaiswal's Test career getting off to a brilliant start, the Indian team management will be satisfied with the youngster's promising start. In this WTC cycle, the focus has shifted towards the younger lot -- the likes of Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikad, Mukesh Kumar, Ishan Kishan, etc. -- with seniors such as captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and others being in the twilight of their respective careers. Thus, the onus is on the seniors to guide the younger lot for them to cement their spots in the Test line-up.

In this regard, Ishant Sharma spoke about how Kohli could play a key role in setting the standard for newcomers regarding how they should hold themselves. "The most important thing is that if you are a senior player, you will first have to score your own runs or else the juniors will also ask what is the point of you being a senior,” said Ishant, while speaking on JioCinema.

<h2>'Virat Kohli&nbsp;knows how to groom youngsters because he has captained the Indian team'</h2>

"However, I know that Virat Kohli will definitely score runs because of the mental frame he is in currently and the way he is batting. He knows how to groom youngsters because he has captained the Indian team for so many runs. When young boys came into our team, like Rishabh Pant or someone else, he never told them how to play in a particular situation. He always said that they should stick to their technique and should play the way they feel,” said Ishant, who just like Pant and Kohli represented Delhi domestically.

“If your captain backs you, it becomes a very important thing as a player,” concluded Ishant, who is making his debut as a commentator -- for Jio Cinema -- in the India-West Indies Tests.

Kohli will resume Day Three along with Jaiswal (unbeaten on 143) with an aim to extend India's lead. The former Indian captain is batting on 36 and will be desperate to get a big score under his belt.&nbsp;

'Have to score or juniors will ask, what's the point...': Ishant on Virat Kohli's role in helping young stars

Virat Kohli is a modern-day legend. Debuting in international cricket in 2008, he was part of MS Dhoni-led India's victorious run in the 2011 ODI World Cup but achieved sizeable success after the mega event. From being a chubby-faced lad, he transformed himself after an ordinary run in IPL 2008 to become one of the fittest cricketers in world cricket.

As a result, Kohli became a run machine across formats for Team India and took charge of the national side after MS Dhoni. To date, the 34-year-old remains fit as ever as he prepares&nbsp;hard for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 at home, later this year. Recently, Ishant Sharma -- veteran India pacer and Kohli's childhood friend -- narrated an unheard tale of Kohli and even lauded him for his inspiring transformation.

Speaking to Ranveer Allahbadia on his YouTube channel, Ishant said that he has seen the 'party phase' and the 'tattoo phase' of his Delhi teammate Kohli. "We were playing a U-19 match in Kolkata. He was batting overnight, yet partied all night and the next day he scored 250. I have seen that phase of Kohli as well. The best thing about him, according to me, is how he changed his physical aspect, starting in 2012, after the World Cup. He was training, but because of his diet, his mental strength and cricket, in general, went to a different level," Ishant stated.

Further, Ishant -- who was seen in action during IPL 2023 for Delhi Capitals (DC) -- revealed that he has seen Kohli eating&nbsp;Chhole Bhature&nbsp;(a famous Indian street food) only once or twice since 2012.&nbsp;

Ishant, a veteran of 105 Tests, further lauded Kohli and added, "Sachin [Tendulkar] paaji used to say hope is not a word, it's a feeling. But if you speak to Virat Kohli, the word 'hope' does not exist in his dictionary. His dictionary only has 'belief'. If you have belief, you can do anything. He is so intense," the senior pacer added.

Kohli will next be seen in action during Rohit Sharma-led India's two-match Test series versus West Indies in the Caribbean island, starting on July 12. The former Indian captain has 8,479,&nbsp;12,898 and 4,008 runs in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively.

Partied all night and scored 250 next day: Ishant shares unheard tale of Kohli, lauds his transformation

Veteran India pacer Ishant Sharma has handpicked three seamers who will run Indian cricket in times to come. With Mohammed Shami and Siraj currently leading India’s fast-bowling department in the absence of injured Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant feels if youngsters, including Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh, alongside Mukesh Kumar, are properly trained, they can turn into future assets across formats.

Speaking on the YouTube podcast with Ranveer Allahbadia, Ishant said players like Umran and Arshdeep have bright futures, given they are taken care of well, and also showered praises on the latest inclusion in the Indian team – Mukesh Kumar, calling him the simplest man he has ever met.

“If you work properly with him, Umran Malik has the potential to do well for the country for a long period of time. (The other would be) Arshdeep Singh," Ishant said.

While for the right-handed pacer Mukesh, who following his impressive consistent run in the domestic structure, earned a maiden India call-up for the upcoming West Indies&nbsp; series, Ishant said like Umran and Arshdeep, Mukesh also needs correct guidance and has all the potential to become a leading bowler in times to come.

Mukesh, who played for Delhi Capitals alongside Ishant in the IPL 2023, picked up seven wickets in ten games at an economy going over ten runs per over. Backing Mukesh despite such numbers, Ishant said Mukesh bowled some tough overs during the tournament, with most of them against some of the hardest hitters of the ball in world cricket.

“Not many people know his (Mukesh Kumar) story, but I haven’t seen a man as simple as him. If you ask him to bowl a particular delivery, he will bowl only that! He needs the right guidance on the field so that when the pressure situation comes, he knows what delivery to bowl. He went for runs in IPL because he bowled the tough overs. No one sees the situation in which he bowled, or which batsman he bowled to. Everyone sees that he conceded 50 runs in 4 overs.

“When Russell is playing, and they’ve lost eight wickets, what does he have to lose? If you even fail to execute one Yorker, he will hit you for a six. No one notices these things. If he’s guided properly, he can become a very good fast bowler,” Ishant, who picked ten wickets from eight matches in IPL 2023, added.

While Mukesh is picked for Tests and ODIs, seamers Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh are named only in the ODI squad. The Test squad will fly to the Caribbean Islands around July 3, with first of the two Tests beginning on July 12 in Dominica, whereas, white-ball teams will follow in the meantime.

India is playing two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is.

'If you work properly with them...': Ishant Sharma feels these THREE bowlers are future superstars

Not many would have given bottom-ranked David Warner-led Delhi Capitals (DC) any chance of beating table-toppers Gujarat Titans (GT) when both sides met&nbsp;in Ahmedabad&nbsp;in match 44 of the IPL 2023 edition on Tuesday (May 02). Opting to bat first, DC were rattled by Mohammed Shami's spell, 4-0-11-4, as they were reduced to 23 for 5 but&nbsp;Aman Hakim Khan's 51 and contributions from Axar Patel and Ripal Patel took DC to 130 for 8 on a challenging surface. In reply, Ishant Sharma 2 for 23 and a brilliant final over took Delhi to an unlikely win over Gujarat, by five runs.

GT was tottering at 32 for 4 and despite a 62-run stand between captain Hardik Pandya (53-ball 59) and Abhinav Manohar (33-ball 26), for the fifth wicket, Gujarat never found any rhythm. The defending champions' run-chase got a much-needed push with Rahul Tewatia slamming three back-to-back sixes off Anrich Nortje in the penultimate over. From 33 off 12, GT were alive in the chase with only 12 needed off the last six before Ishant used all his experience to dismiss Tewatia and ended by only conceding six runs.

IPL 2023: 'I knew I had to...'- Ishant Sharma reveals how he outfoxed Rahul Tewatia in DC's tense win over GT

Veteran Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma wants young speedster Umran Malik to bowl as fast as he can without thinking about runs. The 23-year-old pacer from the Indian state of Kashmir first grabbed the eyeball at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season with his fiery speed.

Speaking to media outlet Cricbuzz, Ishant said (not verbatim), "Malik shouldn't be worried about his line and length too much. He'll be able to manage it with experience but as of now, his priority should be speed. He should focus on speeding up and if he can, he should bowl 150-160 km/h deliveries."

The Delhi pacer also said that Umran's top priority should be taking wickets and not saving runs. "It doesn't matter if he gets hit for runs. The priority should be taking wickets and not thinking about saving runs."

Malik, who consistently can bowl near or above 150 km/h is touted as one of the fastest bowlers in the world and in IPL 2022 season, the bowler, playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, took 22 wickets in 14 matches - fourth most in the season. Ishant also agreed to his abilities and said that his aim should be to instill fear in batsman's eyes.

"The batsmen should close their eyes in fear else there's no point of speed. Umran should be given confidence by being told that bowl as fast so the batters close their eyes in fear," added Ishant.

Notably, Australian fast bowler Brett Lee also backed Umran Malik to make Test debut for India soon. Speaking to the media outlet Hindustan Times after being asked if India should include Umran in Test team, Lee said, "Why not? He is good enough, in my opinion. He is a superstar in the making. He has a good pace, has nice action, and runs well with a beautiful approach. So yes, he can be injected."

Umran has already made limited-overs debut and has taken 13 and 11 wickets in eight ODIs and an equal number of T20Is, respectively.

He should focus on speeding up and if he can, he should bowl 150-160 km/h deliveries." The Delhi pacer also said that Umran's top priority should be taking wickets and not saving runs. "It doesn't matter if he gets hit for runs. The priority should be taking wickets and not thinking about saving runs." Ishant also agreed to his abilities and said that his aim should be to instill fear in batsman's eyes. So yes, he can be injected." Umran has already made limited-overs debut and has taken 13 and 11 wickets in eight ODIs and an equal number of T20Is, respectively. Indian cricketer Ishant Sharma has revealed that he cried for almost a month after Australian allrounder James Faulkner hit him for four sixes in an over during the 2013 ODI Series. Speaking on Crizbuzz's new show, the lanky pacer admitted that the match and the spell he bowled there was the lowest point of his career. “My lowest moment was that 2013 match in Mohali against Australia. I don't know if I could ever have moment worse than that because I was...I don't know. It was very tough for me. And it wasn't because I gave away a lot of runs." "The thing that hurt me the most was I was the reason behind the team's loss. I was dating my wife at that time and I just spoke to her and I think I just cried for almost a month. I used to call her every day and cry over the phone saying that team lost because of me,” he added. India came into the match, having levelled the series on Jaipur after losing the first ODI in Pune by 72 runs. Batting first, India managed to post a competitive total of 303 on board. Australia faltered and could never really get going as India strengthened their chokehold on the match. Requiring 44 runs in the last 18 deliveries, Australia needed something special and they got it in the form of Faulkner's heroics. The right-hander carted Sharma for four sixes in an over and scored 30 runs. Australia won the match with three balls to spare and Faulkner finished with 64 runs in only 29 balls as the visitors took a 2-1 lead in the series. In the aftermath of the thrashing, Sharma revealed that captain MS Dhoni and opener Shikhar Dhawan came to him and gave words of encouragement. “The good thing that happened was Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) came to my room and Shikhar (Dhawan), who was playing that game, also came and said, 'Look you have been doing well (Dekh, tu acha khel raha hai).'" India have a solid pace attack at disposal. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, etc. form a lethal fast-bowling department for Team India. Ishant, being the senior of the lot, has seen his compatriots' rise over the years. Recently, he opened up on Mohammed Shami and how the West Bengal pacer had impressed former Indian captain MS Dhoni during a net session almost a decade back, in 2013.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, on their 'Rise of New India' show, Ishant&nbsp;recalled the first time Shami bowled in Team India nets and described it as being “very skiddy”.&nbsp;The 34-year-old further added that Shami was called to the Indian net session in 2013 amid the presence of then captain Dhoni, who was thoroughly impressed with the speedster's skills.

"I had heard of a bowler from West Indies who had a lot of pace, meaning he was very skiddy. His run-up looks normal but he bowled with a lot of pace. So, when we saw him at the net, Mahi Bhai said, "Wow, he is good,"&nbsp;recalled Ishant.

The wily pacer added, "Then he made his debut in Kolkata (versus West Indies in 2013). As far as I remember, he picked nine wickets and helped India win. So after that, we also became very good friends. When he was going through some personal turmoil, whatever had happened to him, I felt he needed a support from someone outside and say to him, 'What happened, happened. If you focus on cricket, may be things will become okay'. May be that is why Shami is a totally different bowler now."

Shami went through a turbulent time in 2018 after his relationship with his ex-wife Hasin Jahan went downhill. While the initial few months were tough for Shami as he failed&nbsp;the Yo-Yo Test as well, the pacer bounced back in style and there has been no looking back since then&nbsp;and has in total so far claimed 219, 159 and 24 wickets in 61 Tests, 87 ODIs and 23 T20Is, respectively.&nbsp;

He will next be seen in action in India's second Test&nbsp;of the four-match series&nbsp;versus Australia in New Delhi. The match kicks off on February 17.

MS Dhoni said, 'Wow, he is good': Ishant Sharma recalls former captain's words on star India bowler

Mohammed Shami remains one of the main bowlers for India. He is currently spearheading the pace attack in the ongoing Australia home Tests with Jasprit Bumrah not yet fully fit. Shami has been an important asset for India over the years and has continued to deliver crunch spells from time to time. In 2018, he had gone through a turbulent time on the personal front after his&nbsp;estranged wife Hasin Jahan&nbsp;levelled serious charges against him.

Shami's ex-wife had&nbsp;lodged a police complaint and accused the pacer of domestic violence and even of match-fixing; claiming that the Indian pacer&nbsp;received money from a Pakistani woman. As soon as the news spread like wildfire, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) upheld Shami's&nbsp;contract. In addition, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) urged the Indian board to seriously look into the matter. Later, Shami was cleared of all charges.

Recalling the whole episode where he was investigated for match-fixing allegations on Shami, Ishant Sharma said on the latest episode of 'Rise of New India' on Cricbuzz, "I had a word with him and he did share of lot on the topic. Whatever had happened, the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) had approached us all, and they had asked us whether Shami could do a match-fixing or not. Just like policemen lodge a complaint...I was asked everything and all was written down. I had told them, 'I don't know his personal things but I'm 200 per cent sure he can't do that because I know him that well." When he heard I said those words, he realised that what I think of him and our bond became stronger."

Later, Dinesh Karthik -- India's veteran keeper-batter -- also spoke highly of Shami and said on the show, "If I have to use one word for Shami, it will be "torture Shami." Because in my whole career, he is the toughest bowler I have faced in the nets, he has got me out a couple of times as well in the match. But he has been nasty to play in the net. I thought I was the only one, so then I asked Kohli and Rohit, and they are all legends of the game, and they all said they hate playing Shami."

Shami has moved past all the allegations levied by his estranged wife and has been a key weapon in India's success since then. He claimed a hat-trick in 2019 ODI World Cup and was part of India's memorable journey in the inaugural WTC, where they lost the final to New Zealand. He was part of the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cup campaigns; picking six wickets in as many games in the last edition at an economy of 7.15.

At present, Shami is part of Rohit Sharma-led India's Test squad for the ongoing Australia home series. He accounted for three scalps and scored an entertaining 37 in the first Test in Nagpur. The second Test kicks off on February 17 in New Delhi.

While India’s T20I captain Hardik Pandya and opening batsman Shubman Gill could be promoted in the BCCI’s annual central contract list, veteran seamer Ishant Sharma and batter Ajinkya Rahane could lose their spots. Alongside them, keeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha could also be part of that list. As the board’s apex council meeting is set to take place on December 21st, star T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav could also see him getting promoted.

Among the 12 items on the agenda that will be discussed in the meeting via a video conference, ‘Retainership contract’ of senior men and women cricketers is one huge point. It is understood that out-of-favour Test specialists Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma could face axe in the new list while Saha, who had already been told by the management that he won’t feature for India again, might&nbsp;suffer the same fate as well.

As the contract is divided in four different categories – A+ (7 crores), A (5 crores), B (3 crores) and C (1 crores), we could see some shuffling happening. As per an unnamed senior BCCI official, Suryakumar Yadav, who is currently listed in Group C, will be promoted given his splendid run-of-form in the shortest format this year; while newly-appointed T20I captain Hardik Pandya could also return to Group B from C. Shubman Gill, who is now a regular starter in both Tests and ODIs is likely to get promotion from Group C to Group B.

Ishan Kishan, who has had a fair amount of run in white-ball cricket this year, could well enter the list. The dynamite opener recently smashed a double-hundred against Bangladesh in the ODI series.

"Surya was in Group C but his performance in the last one year warrants a promotion to Group B at least, if not A. He is currently world No. 1 in T20I ICC rankings and is a serious contender in ODI team also," a senior official, who is privy to the developments, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Dhoni remains an icon and inspiration in Indian cricket. The superstar cricketer made his debut at the international level in late 2004. While he was run-out for a duck in his first ODI, Dhoni gained unprecedented success across formats as a batter, finisher, keeper and captain. In ODIs, he slammed over 10,000 runs whereas he was a very handy batter in Tests, ending with 4,876 runs in 90 matches with 6 hundreds (including a double ton).&nbsp;

Dhoni's numbers in T20Is wasn't extra ordinary but he remained a cameo specialist and finisher, ending with 1,617 runs whereas he is nearing the 5,000-run mark in IPL. He ended his international career with 634 catches, 195 stumpings (most by any) and also led India to all three major ICC titles along with the No. 1 ranking in Tests. To date, Dhoni remains India's second-highest six-hitter (359).

He was last seen in action during IPL 2022 and has confirmed his participation for the next year's edition, where he will again represent the Chennai Super Kings (with whom he has won four IPL titles and two Champions League trophies as captain).

MS Dhoni turned 41 on Thursday (July 07). Dhoni remains a darling of the nation despite retiring from international cricket on August 15, 2020. The 41-year-old former Indian captain is still a favourite among fans and many poured wishes for the former cricketer as he turns a year older.

Happy Birthday MS Dhoni: Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina lead wishes as former Indian skipper turns 41

India and South Africa were involved in a closely-fought five-match T20I series, which came to a disappointing end on Sunday evening (June 19). After the hosts Rishabh Pant-led Indian team had levelled the series, 2-2, by winning the fourth and penultimate T20I, there was all to play for both teams in the series decider before persistent rain in Bengaluru saw only 3.3 overs possible as it led to a no-result and the series being shared.

For India, they still had a lot of positives as they came back from being 0-2 down. The likes of Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel and Bhuvneshwar Kumar did well. Bhuvi returned with the Player-of-the-Series award, claiming six wickets in four innings.

Thus, the 32-year-old Bhuvi claimed a new record, by winning the most Player-of-the-Series awards by an Indian fast-bowler. He, thus, surpassed Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma. The two&nbsp;have won it thrice when compared to Bhuvi (4). Earlier, the swing bowler had picked up the player of the series awards during the 2013 Celkon Cup tri-series in West Indies(ODIs), 2014 tour of England and 2018 tour of South Africa (in Tests and T20Is, respectively).

At the post-match presentation, at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bhuvi told, "Really proud. Body feels good, but I don't want to talk much about it. Just want to focus on getting back stronger physically and with my bowling. Most of the times I bowl two at the top and two at the end. Being a senior, I also think about how to help the youngsters. I have been lucky that the captain gave me the free hand to do whatever I wanted. Pretty blessed in that way."

Bhuvi will next be seen in action in India's two-match T20I series versus Ireland, in Dublin, on June 26 and 28. He will be the vice-captain with Hardik Pandya set to lead the Men in Blue.

Ind vs SA, T20Is: Bhuvneshwar Kumar creates new record for Team India after memorable series vs Proteas

When India's Test squad was announced for the ongoing home series versus Sri Lanka, a lot of changes came into place with many senior players being shown the door. The likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha were dropped as the BCCI selectors stressed on focusing on younger breed of players for grooming them in the purest format.

Despite being dropped, the doors have not been shut for Pujara and Rahane as per chief selector Chetan Sharma's statement. However, the duo have been demoted to Grade B, from Grade A, category in BCCI's central contracts list. On the other hand, Ishant and Saha are out-of-favour and it seems the two won't be in the scheme of things for Team India going forward. While Saha has been told that Rishabh Pant and KS Bharat will be preferred for the keeper's slot in whites, Ishant's future also looks gloomy.

Even though Ishant-Saha are out of contention, at least for now, they feature in BCCI contracts list. Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra explained why the pair have a central contract.

"Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha's names are also there in BCCI's central contracts. In fact, Ishant Sharma is at 3 crores. Are you wondering why? Why was Saha given a central contract when you have told him that you are not going to select him at all?" said the cricketer-turned-commentator on his&nbsp;YouTube&nbsp;channel.

"It seems Ishant Sharma also has an extremely limited role left in Test cricket, so why is he in the 3-crores contract and not 1 crore? These are things that you wonder?&nbsp; These are the contracts from October 2021 to the upcoming September. That is why Saha has the right. He was India's player in this contract period. He scored runs for India in December, that is why his name is there in this list, same goes for Ishant Sharma, he was playing regularly," he opined.

Chopra further added, "This could possibly be the last contract for Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha. Will you see them playing after October - I am not 100% certain. They have already told Saha and it looks 50-50 for Ishant Sharma as well. I love him to bits but it seems the time has come for his exit."

For the unversed, BCCI's&nbsp;has four categories -- A+ which has annual remuneration of INR 7 crore (INR 70 million) while A, B and C categories are valued at INR 5 crore (INR 50 million), INR 3 crore (30 million) and INR 1 crore (10 crore) respectively. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah remain the highest earners whereas the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Md Siraj and Axar Patel have been promoted. In addition, Suryakumar Yadav is the only new entrant in the central contracts.

R Ashwin surpasses Kapil Dev: A look at India's highest wicket-takers in Tests

Rohit Sharma has been appointed as the new captain of the Indian Test team ahead of the start of the upcoming series against Sri Lanka at home. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday (February 19) announced India's squad for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. The Chetan Sharma-led national selection panel has decided to hand over the captaincy to Rohit, making him India's captain across all formats of the game.

Virat Kohli had quit as India's Test captain earlier this year post the team's 2-1 loss in the Test series against South Africa. The captaincy spot had since been vacant. However, Rohit will now take charge in the whites as well after being appointed as India's limited-overs captain last year.

Besides confirming Rohit's appointment as Test captain, the selectors have taken some big calls by dropping the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha from the Test team. The four senior players have been replaced by youngsters in the squad.

Rahane and Pujara's form was under the scanner for quite a while now and the duo's failure to bounce back from their lean patch has resulted in their ouster from the Test team. Ishant has also failed to attain consistency with the ball and his recent fitness issues have seen Mohammed Siraj move up in the pecking order.

Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will be making his comeback from injury against Sri Lanka. He is also part of the T20I squad for the three-match series against the visitors. Former skipper Kohli, who will miss the T20Is, will be back for the Test series.

While senior spinner R Ashwin's selection is subject to fitness, left-arm all-rounder Sourabh Kumar has received his maiden Test call up for the Sri Lanka series. Kumar, who represents Uttar Pradesh in the domestic circuit is a left-arm spin all-rounder. In Ashwin's absence, Jadeja will spearhead India's spin attack along with Jayant Yadav.

Jasprit Bumrah named India's&nbsp;vice-captain in Tests:

The selectors have taken another major call by naming Jasprit Bumrah as India's vice-captain in the absence of KL Rahul. The premier pacer was being touted as one of the contenders to replace Kohli as Test captain. However, he will act as Rohit's deputy in the Sri Lanka Test series for now.
