The United States military is facing growing concerns over depleted missile stockpiles following the recent conflict with Iran.
According to assessments, including those by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, nearly 45% of Precision Strike Missiles have been used, along with around 50% of THAAD and Patriot air defense interceptors. Other long-range systems, including cruise missiles, have also seen significant drawdowns.
Experts warn this creates a “near-term risk” for US military readiness—especially if another major conflict emerges, particularly involving China.
The situation highlights the strain of modern high-intensity warfare on advanced weapons systems and raises urgent questions about production capacity, defense planning, and global deterrence.

At the same time, American firms have restricted access to their satellite data due to pressure from the Trump administration. This has cut off journalists, researchers, and analysts from getting important open information. This restriction has now become even tighter. Planet Labs, a major U.S. satellite company, moved from a 14-day delay to an indefinite blackout on April 5, 2026. This means users no longer know when or if they will get fresh images. Because of this, the global OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) community is now heavily dependent on Chinese and European satellite data. One major trigger for this shift was the Minab incident on February 28, where a Tomahawk missile strike hit a school in Iran. Chinese satellite images were later used by international journalists to prove U.S. involvement, creating global pressure. This is widely seen as one of the reasons behind the strong American reaction against what some call “space transparency.”Because of these developments, Chinese satellite images are becoming more important than ever. They show how much China has improved its Earth-observation technology, meaning satellites that capture detailed images of Earth. This also shows that the West no longer has full control over high-quality space imagery. For analysts, this creates a mixed situation. For example, the Jilin-1 network, with over 100 satellites, has ties to the military and can capture images of any place on Earth every 10 minutes. In terms of technology, China and the U.S. are now almost equal. China’s Superview Neo-1 satellite can produce images as sharp as top American systems. AI helps sharpen blurry pictures, identify objects like aircraft, and track movements over time. Even if images are unclear, AI helps analysts understand what is happening. At the same time, AI is not always accurate. Some labels may be wrong, but feedback helps improve the system. Experts can correct mistakes, and the AI learns to become more precise. This is not the first time Chinese satellite firms have supported groups opposing the U.S. In the past, CGST shared images with the Wagner Group and Houthi rebels, which could help target military assets. Even after sanctions, Chinese companies like Spacety continue to grow and attract funding.China is also moving ahead in satellite video technology. Networks like Jilin-1 and Zhuhai-1 can record videos from space, while only one American company, Planet, has similar capability. They worry about military links, and say Chinese firms do not always respond to data requests.Earlier, many believed that more satellites would bring greater global transparency. But today, the situation is different. As more countries build their own systems, most are focused on defence and intelligence use, not public sharing. In simple terms, the world is moving towards a reality where more countries are watching each other, but less information is openly available to everyone.

An Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps gunboat fired on a container ship off the coast of Oman on Wednesday (Apr 22), causing significant damage to the vessel's bridge — an incident that underscores just how volatile the Strait of Hormuz remains even as ceasefire talks continue. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre confirmed the attack, saying the vessel's master reported being approached by an IRGC gunboat that "fired upon the vessel, which has caused heavy damage to the bridge." The agency said there were no fires, no environmental impact, and all crew members were safe. Iran not ready for talks yet? Pakistan says no official confirmation on Iranian delegation

US President Donald Trump said Monday that the agreement currently under negotiation with Tehran will prove superior to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“The deal that we are making with Iran will be far better than the JCPOA,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, referring to the original pact as one of the "worst" agreements ever made regarding US security.

Trump Insists New Deal With Iran Will Be Better Than JCPOA

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (Apr 21) said that the US is in a strong position for negotiations with Iran. He also expressed optimism for reaching a “great deal”. This comes ahead of the expected truce talks in Islamabad. A US delegation led by Vice President JD Vance was expected to leave shortly from Washington for the next round of discussions. Trump also said that the United States stopped an Iranian ship carrying a “gift from China” amid the US Navy blockade.“We’re going to end up with a great deal. I think they have no choice... The United States Central Command shared a video on Monday (Apr 20) of American troops seizing an Iranian-flagged container ship in the Gulf of Oman. The crew was warned that if they "attempt to run the blockade," they will be subjected to "compliance of force". After the crew ignored repeated warnings to comply with Washington's naval blockade of Iranian ports, the ship, believed to be M/V Touska, was seized. US Marines then boarded and seized the vessel. Iran said the ship had been travelling from China and claimed its military was prepared to confront US forces over the incident, but was constrained by the presence of crew members' families on board.
27 ships forced to turn back
US Central Command has released a video of US troops engaging in a separate blockade enforcement interaction.
Will the US end its blockade?
Trump, speaking Monday, showed no signs of backing down. The blockade would remain in place until a deal is finalised, he said, adding that he was "under no pressure" to move faster. The two-week ceasefire announced on April 7 expires on Wednesday, and another round of talks is expected in Islamabad this week, though Iran has threatened to boycott the negotiations and accused Washington of violating the ceasefire terms through the blockade itself.Tehran reopened the Strait of Hormuz last week following a separate Israel-Lebanon ceasefire, only to immediately threaten to close it again as the US blockade continued. Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf was unambiguous: "With the continuation of the blockade, the Strait of Hormuz will not remain open." The seizure of the Touska has made that threat more pointed.Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. 'I have no problem meeting them': Trump offers face-to-face meeting with Iran leaders

Tensions between Iran and the United States have taken a sharp turn as Tehran refuses to join a second round of talks, citing the ongoing blockade and rising pressure. While Donald Trump insists Washington has offered a “fair deal,” thousands rallied in Iran backing the government’s stance. Meanwhile, fresh incidents at sea and diplomatic outreach, including a call between Pakistan and Iran, show the crisis is far from easing.

Iran Rejects Second Round Of US Talks: 'No Talks Under Threat'

Amid reports of Iran saying that 'no decision' has been taken to join new talks, Donald Trump on Monday again threatened Iran with military consequences, saying “lots of bombs [will] start going off” if no deal is reached before ceasefire ends Tuesday evening. The latest warning was made by Trump in a phone call with a PBS News reporter. When asked by the reporter what will happen if the ceasefire ends without any conclusion, Trump said "Then lots of bombs start going off." One being asked whether Iran will be participating in the talks to end the war in Pakistan, Trump replied by saying "I don't know. I mean, they're supposed to be there. We agreed to be there, although they say we didn't. But no, it was set up. And we'll see whether or not it's there. If they're not there, that's fine too." Trump again reiterated in the interview that "Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. Very simple." "We're not negotiating anything other than the fact that they will not have a nuclear weapon. And that's pretty basic when you get right down to it. So you know, that's it.
