Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue to rise as Iran claims it has received its first revenue from transit tolls imposed on vessels passing through the strategic waterway. The move comes amid heightened uncertainty linked to the ongoing US-Iran conflict and concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.

US vs Iran: Trump Claims US Has Total Control Over Strait of Hormuz

Satellite images have captured oil spilling from tankers and facilities into the Persian Gulf, setting the stage for a major ecological disaster. Iran and the US-Israel have been engaged in a war for nearly two months now, targeting oil facilities in the Gulf and ships in the area. The liquid can be seen flowing into the sea from space. Images taken on March 18, April 2, and April 7 show huge oil spills in the Strait of Hormuz. This specific area is just near Iran's Qeshm Island, where key military and civilian infrastructure is present. On April 6, an oil trail leaving Kuwait's Port of Shuaiba was captured by satellites. A day before, Iran had targeted energy and petrochemical facilities in the Gulf countries. Another oil trail was seen leaking into the waters off Lavan Island in Iran and moving towards Shidvar Island on April 10. Known as "Iran's Maldives”, it is a protected wildlife refuge and is at risk of an environmental disaster. Also Read: ‘Very top secret’: What was ‘gift from China’ to Iran stopped by US forces?
Oil spill in Strait of Hormuz
Since conditions continue to remain hostile in the Persian Gulf despite an indefinite ceasefire extension, things might continue to get worse for the sea and the animals, since it is highly unlikely that anyone would initiate clean-up efforts. Silent casualty of Iran War: Oil spills set to trigger historic environmental collapse in the Persian Gulf

President Trump announced that U.S. forces intercepted a ship carrying a "gift" from China to Iran, alleging it contained undesirable materials, without providing details on the cargo or location. This move, amid a U.S. blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, heightened tensions despite China denying the claim.

US President Trump Withholds Details on Seized Ship From China To Iran

US President Donald Trump on Thursday (Apr 23) claimed that the Iranian-flagged vessel that was intercepted and seized by the American forces had something that was “very top secret.” This comes after Trump claimed that the ship was carrying a “gift from China”, but refused to elaborate on it. The cargo vessel, M/V Touska, was captured by the US troops in the Gulf of Oman while it was en route to Iran’s Bandar Abbas port on Sunday (Apr 19). It is currently in the custody of the US Marines.
What was on the ship?
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump was asked what was on the ship. In response, the US President said, “Yeah, well, we have that. It’s very top secret. There was stuff in there, but it’s top secret.” However, he did not provide any other details on what the “stuff” was on the vessel. When asked whether he was angry at China for sending stuff to Iran, Trump said, “No, we do the same thing, don’t we, with other countries?”Earlier in an interview on Tuesday (Apr 21), Trump told CNBC that the ship had “a gift from China”, which “wasn’t very nice”. He added that he “was a little surprised,” as he thought he had an “understanding” with China’s President Xi Jinping. A week earlier, Trump said that Xi had assured him that there would be no Chinese weapons deliveries to Iran.According to a Reuters report, citing US maritime security sources, Touska is likely to have what Washington deems “dual-use items” that could be used by ‌the military on board. As per AIS data provided by the global intelligence company Kpler, mentioned in a Washington Post report, the ship was travelling back from Gaolan port in Zhuhai, a city on China’s southeastern coast. The US has not yet revealed what materials were on the ship.
What claims ‘complete control’ over Hormuz
Trump also said that the US has “complete control” over the Strait of Hormuz. “You know that the strait, what we’ve done with the blockade is amazing, and nobody, nobody gets through, and nobody wants to get through it. Nobody’s trying. The one tried to shut out the engine, but nobody’s trying. We have complete control now. They can drop their mines in there and do all those stupid things. It’s just going to take longer for them to make money, because the mines are going to affect them much more than they’re going to affect us,” he said.He added, “But, and we don’t know that they’re doing that, but they could be that if they, if they’re doing it, it’s a very foolish thing to do, just like for Iran to shoot at Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and Kuwait, Bahrain, all the different places they shot. Nobody expected that. They thought they’d shoot at Israel in all fairness, but you didn’t expect they’d be shooting at numerous other countries. I think it was a big mistake if they’re putting mines down. It’s a big mistake for them.”Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. Even as U.S. naval blockade remains in place, Iran has defied it and claimed to have collected toll tax from ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. This comes even as U.S. President Donald Trump claimed total control of this strategic waterway. He also ordered U.S. Navy to shoot any boats planting mines in Hormuz.

The developments highlight the fragile state of diplomacy and the risks of renewed conflict.

Donald Trump has said there is no fixed deadline for Iran to respond to Washington’s peace proposal as efforts continue to extend the fragile ceasefire between the two countries. Iran has released a dramatic video a day after Iran captured two merchant ships, including one headed for India, in the Strait of Hormuz. The footage appears to show masked commandos chasing the vessels, climbing aboard and eventually seizing them, similar to a Hollywood action thriller movie. The release follows recent US actions where Marines intercepted Iranian-linked cargo ships attempting to breach the blockade. On Wednesday, shortly after Donald Trump extended the ceasefire, Iranian naval forces captured the Panama-flagged MSC Francesca and Liberia-flagged Epaminondas, the latter en route to Mundra Port in Gujarat from Dubai. Both the ships were escorted to Iran's shores, marking Tehran's first such seizure since the outbreak of the war. The video shows Iranian forces in speedboats approaching the ships, countering claims that Iran’s navy had been weakened. US officials attributed the operation to Iran’s so-called “mosquito fleet”, fast, agile boats linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Armed commandos are then seen climbing aboard, conducting searches, and securing control of the vessels. In the next scene, the footage shows masked Iranian soldiers, armed with rifles, scaling a ladder and landing on the MSC Francesca. Aboard the Epaminondas, the masked commandos can also be seen searching the vessels with rifles and entering the engine room. Later, the soldiers are seen climbing on the top deck of the ship. The India-bound Epaminondas sustained damage to its bridge, the vessel’s main control centre, after Iranian forces fired at it and threw grenades from speedboats. Despite the attack, no crew members were injured. The MSC Francesca, located about six miles off Iran’s coast, also came under intense fire.

Even as U.S. President Donald Trump has described the Hormuz blockade as a 'tremendous success', the ground reality paints a different picture. As per cargo tracking group 'Vortexa', at least 34 tankers linked to Iran have bypassed the U.S. blockade since it began.

Iran Evades Hormuz Blockade, Threatens 'harsher Lesson' if US-Israel Renews War

Tensions have escalated in the Strait of Hormuz after Iran’s IRGC reportedly attacked and seized multiple commercial vessels, including MSC Francesca and Epaminondas, while another ship, Euphoria, was struck and grounded near Iranian waters. The incident comes shortly after Trump declared that ceasefire with Iran has been extended. Repots are also emerging about the growing concern over American missile stockpile which have been strained due to the war in Iran.

Iran Defies America, Seizes Ships in Hormuz

U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran wanted the Strait of Hormuz open “so they can make $500 Million Dollars a day”, which he said the Gulf nation would risk losing if it remains closed. “Iran is collapsing financially! They want the Strait of Hormuz opened immediately,” he wrote on Truth Social, adding that the Islamic republic was “starving for cash.”

Iran Seizes Two Ships After Trump Announced Extension in Truce

The United States military is facing growing concerns over depleted missile stockpiles following the recent conflict with Iran.
According to assessments, including those by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, nearly 45% of Precision Strike Missiles have been used, along with around 50% of THAAD and Patriot air defense interceptors. Other long-range systems, including cruise missiles, have also seen significant drawdowns.
Experts warn this creates a “near-term risk” for US military readiness—especially if another major conflict emerges, particularly involving China.
The situation highlights the strain of modern high-intensity warfare on advanced weapons systems and raises urgent questions about production capacity, defense planning, and global deterrence.

US-Iran War | Report: US Used Half of Its THAAD, Patriot Missiles in Iran War

Iran attacked three ships in the Strait of Hormuz this morning, saying its Revolutionary Guard seized two of them and further inflaming tensions over the key waterway. It comes after U.S. forces seized an Iranian ship and boarded a tanker linked to Tehran’s oil trade.

US Holds Off Attacks but Continues Hormuz's Naval Blockade

In the most high-profile statement from Beijing on the US blockade of Iranian ports so far, Chinese leader Xi Jinping told Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on April 20 that "the Strait of Hormuz should remain open to traffic."

Speaking by phone with the Saudi leader as China continues to increase its diplomatic efforts during the US-Israeli war with Iran, Xi said reopening the crucial waterway would be in the "common interest of countries in the region and the international community."
