US Stockpiles Under Strain? Iran War Sparks Concerns in Washington

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Strait of Hormuz could act as an “economic nuclear weapon” in Iran’s hands, stressing that any regime change should come from within. It is pertinent to note that his remarks stand in contrast to those of US President Donald Trump, who has suggested that a shift in Iran’s leadership has already taken place as the conflict enters its second month.

As global markets react to tensions linked to Iran, countries with strong renewable energy systems are proving more resilient. Nations relying on hydropower, wind, and solar—like Albania—have been better shielded from fuel price spikes and supply disruptions. Meanwhile, import-dependent economies face rising pressure. The crisis is highlighting how clean energy is becoming not just an environmental priority, but a strategic economic advantage during global conflicts.

US Vice President JD Vance may be reportedly worried about the depleting stockpiles of American missiles and has repeatedly questioned the Pentagon’s portrayal of the war in Iran. According to a report, Vance has queried the accuracy of information provided to US President Donald Trump about the conflict amid reports suggesting that the US may be running low on its missiles. The Atlantic reported, citing sources, that the vice president has expressed concerns over the availability of certain missile systems in discussions with the president. In case of the US depleting its munition reserves, the American forces would need to draw the stockpiles to defend Taiwan against China, South Korea against North Korea, and Europe against Russia.Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and General Dan Caine, who chairs the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have publicly stated that the US weapons stockpiles are robust, reporting significant damage to Iranian forces after eight weeks of fighting. The outlet added that while Vance is trying to avoid making the concern personal or creating differences among the cabinet, he believes Hegseth’s portrayal of the war has been so positive as to be misleading. In a statement, Vance said that Hegseth was doing a “great job” and working with Trump to ensure a “warrior ethos” in the military’s top ranks. A White House official told the Atlantic that Vance “asks a lot of probing questions about our strategic planning, as do all of the members of the president’s national-security team.”Earlier in March, the Pentagon chief declared the US military’s “complete control” of Iranian skies. However, in April, Iranian forces downed an American F-15E fighter jet. Following this, a high-risk rescue operation was launched by the US to extract the pilot stuck behind the enemy lines.
Is US running out of stockpiles?
Multiple reports have suggested that the US stockpiles of weapons, including interceptors, may be running out. American stockpiles had already been strained in recent years. The US used large numbers of interceptors to defend Israel during last year’s 12-day war with Iran and has also supplied significant weapons shipments to Ukraine.Despite the concerns, the Trump administration insists that US stockpiles remain strong. Trump wrote on social media earlier this week that American reserves of “medium and upper medium grade” munitions were “virtually unlimited,” dismissing reports of shortages.White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt has echoed similar remarks, dismissing reports of a shortage of American weapons amid the war. “We have weapon stockpiles in places that many in this world don’t even know about,” she said, adding that the United States has more than enough weapons to sustain a prolonged conflict.Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. US suffered extensive damage in Iranian attacks, more than publicly acknowledged: Report

The United States military is facing growing concerns over depleted missile stockpiles following the recent conflict with Iran.
According to assessments, including those by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, nearly 45% of Precision Strike Missiles have been used, along with around 50% of THAAD and Patriot air defense interceptors. Other long-range systems, including cruise missiles, have also seen significant drawdowns.
Experts warn this creates a “near-term risk” for US military readiness—especially if another major conflict emerges, particularly involving China.
The situation highlights the strain of modern high-intensity warfare on advanced weapons systems and raises urgent questions about production capacity, defense planning, and global deterrence.

Iran says the US is seeking a “face-saving” exit from the conflict as Abbas Araghchi visits Islamabad ahead of potential peace talks.

Iranian Defence Ministry on Saturday (Apr 25) said that the United States was seeking a “face-saving” way out of the war in which it has become “trapped”. This comes as the US delegation heads to Pakistan to hold peace negotiations. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Islamabad to hold meetings with senior Pakistani officials, but did not mention plans to hold talks with the US. “Our military power today is a dominant force, and the enemy is looking for a face-saving way to escape the war quagmire it has become trapped in,” Iranian media outlet ISNA quoted a ministry spokesperson as saying. Will Iran talks happen? This comes as US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner head to Pakistan to hold discussions. The White House said that the two would have “talks” with Iranian representatives. However, Iranian state media reported that direct talks were not in the cards. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei earlier said that the Iranian delegation arrived in Pakistan, marking an official visit. He added that Araghchi will hold talks with high-level Pakistani officials as part of their efforts in ongoing mediation of the war. He added that no meeting was planned to take place between Iran and the US. “We arrive in Islamabad, Pakistan, for an official visit. Iran claims US seeking ‘face-saving’ way out of war ahead of potential talks in Islamabad

Iran, as per reports, seems to be scrambling to find somewhere to put its oil. With Kharg Island, the terminal that handles roughly 90 per cent of the country's crude exports, approaching maximum storage capacity, Tehran has been forced to resurrect a 30-year-old tanker that had been sitting empty and unused for years, according to Gulf News. The vessel, named Nasha, is currently en route to Kharg Island to serve as floating storage, according to tracking data from TankerTrackers.com.
Why does Iran's revival of an oil tanker matter?
The move is a stopgap measure, but the fact that Iran is resorting to it signals how effectively the US naval blockade is squeezing the country's oil infrastructure. Analysts told Gulf News that at Iran's current net oil inflow rate of around one million barrels per day, the remaining spare capacity at Kharg could fill up in as little as 12 to 13 days.If that happens, Iran faces a serious problem with no easy solution. Oil that can't be stored can't be produced, and oil that can't be exported can't generate the revenue Tehran needs to keep functioning. The blockade, in other words, is not just a military posture; it's an economic vice.
Can a US-Iran ceasefire happen anytime soon?
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledged Friday (Apr 24) that Iran still has "an open window" for negotiations, but added that "the clock is not on their side."In recent days, US enforcement has been relentless. This week, American forces seized a sanctioned Iranian-flagged tanker trying to slip past the blockade in darkness, bound for Singapore. At least three other Iranian vessels were intercepted in Asian waters near India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka on Wednesday, according to American shipping and security sources. The US has also deployed the USS George H.W. Bush, a nuclear-powered carrier stretching over 1,000 feet and capable of operating more than 80 aircraft. The aircraft carrier arrived in the Middle East on Friday, bringing the total number of American carriers in the region to three. Iran also claimed to have seized two vessels attempting to exit the Gulf through the strait, marking its first such seizures since the war began.

Why is Iran bringing a decades-old tanker back into service? As pressure mounts from the US blockade, Tehran is turning to stopgap fixes to store oil, including reviving the ageing vessel Nasha near Kharg Island.

Resurrecting the dead: Why has Iran pulled 'ghost ship' Nasha out of retirement? Shocking reason REVEALED

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy reportedly deployed more mines in the Strait of Hormuz this week as the blockade of the strategic waterway continues. This comes as the standoff between Tehran and Washington escalates over the world’s most important shipping route, as Iran continues attacking commercial vessels, while the American forces continue enforcing a blockade of Iranian ports. Earlier on Thursday (Apr 23), US President Donald Trump ordered the US military to “shoot and kill” Iranian boats that lay mines in the strait with “no hesitation”. Reportedly, the order came after Trump was briefed on the new developments.According to an Axios report, citing a US official and a source with knowledge of the issue, the American forces detected Iranian mine-laying operations and have been tracking them closely. The official added that the US knows the number of new mines deployed but declined to provide details on how many. Experts have estimated less than 100 mines had been laid by Iran. The new mines in the Strait of Hormuz could deepen what the International Energy Agency has already called the largest disruption in global energy supply in history, even bigger than the 1970s oil shocks. It is the only maritime outlet for ports located in the Persian Gulf, with roughly 20 per cent of the global oil supply passing through it daily. It is the second time that Iran has deployed mines in the strategic waterway. It is not known whether the mines from the first round have been found and cleared yet. However, US officials have estimated that they have destroyed more than 90 per cent of Iran’s large mine-laying ships, which can carry two to four mines for dropping them in Hormuz. These vessels can also be equipped with rocket launchers and mounted machine guns to target large tankers. The officials have said that the US Navy is using underwater drones in the Strait of Hormuz to clear the mines. Trump also suggested that two mine countermeasure vessels the USS Chief and the USS Pioneer, may also be operating in the Strait.Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others.
