Iran’s capital is witnessing fresh unrest as economic protests enter a third day in Tehran. 
Demonstrations triggered by soaring inflation, a collapsing rial and shortages of power and water have drawn in shopkeepers, students and middle-class Iranians, a combination that has historically alarmed the regime.

<p>The Berlin film festival, long a champion of Iran's embattled independent directors, is spotlighting its citizens' fight for basic rights with a series of screenings, events and a red-carpet protest.</p>

<p>French-Iranian actor Golshifteh Farahani, who is serving on the jury for the top prizes with president Kristen Stewart, said as the festival kicked off Thursday that cinema was a crucial fuel for the freedom movement.</p>

<p>"In a country like Iran that is a dictatorship, art is not only an intellectual or philosophical thing, it's essential, it's like oxygen," she said.</p>

<p>Farahani made her name in Iranian movies and became an international star in productions such as Jim Jarmusch's "Paterson" opposite Adam Driver.</p>

<p>She and Stewart joined the red-carpet demonstration for women's rights in Iran on Saturday with festival chief Mariette Rissenbeek, who told AFP the Berlinale stood with Iranian directors who "weren't allowed to travel to the festival".</p>

<p><strong>- 'Change something with cinema' -</strong></p>

<p>The Berlinale, Europe's first major cinema showcase of the year, has awarded its Golden Bear top prize to many of the leading lights of Iranian cinema including Asghar Farhadi ("A Separation"), Jafar Panahi ("Taxi") and Mohammad Rasoulof ("There Is No Evil").</p>

<p>Iran, rocked by months of anti-government rallies, this month released Panahi and Rasoulof from prison along with several dozen other well-known detainees in an apparent attempt to appease critics.</p>

<p>This year, the festival is showing several documentaries, including Steffi Niederzoll's "Seven Winters in Tehran" and "My Worst Enemy" by Mehran Tamadon, which expose the brutal conditions in Iran's jails as well as rampant executions.</p>

<p>Niederzoll's harrowing film, which includes material smuggled out of Iran, tells the story of Reyhaneh Jabbari, who was hanged in 2014 at the age of 26 for killing a former intelligence officer she maintained had tried to rape her.</p>

<p>Featuring wrenching interviews with her family, who agitated for her freedom and appealed for mercy to the murdered man's son, the film recounts how an international campaign for Jabbari's life arose.</p>

<p>Zar Amir Ebrahimi, who won the best actress award at Cannes last year, narrates the film with letters, journals and text messages Jabbari wrote from jail, where she became a role model for many fellow prisoners.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We hope that, hand in hand, we can change something with cinema," Amir Ebrahimi told AFP.</p>

<p>"My Worst Enemy" also examines state interrogations, as director Tamadon invites members of Paris's large Iranian exile community to question him using pressure techniques they themselves experienced in custody.</p>

<p>Half expose, half group therapy session, the film asks whether anyone can become an instrument of state oppression, given the chance.</p>

<p>Amir Ebrahimi appears as one of the interrogators and reveals that she was sexually assaulted while in custody by a female doctor during a purported medical exam.</p>

<p>"I couldn't walk for three days," she says.</p>

Tamadon told AFP it was "time to forget that the Islamic republic will reform itself".&nbsp;</p>

<p>He hailed the role of Western platforms such as the Berlinale to "shine a light on the violence perpetrated against the Iranian people".</p>

<p>"Iranians in Iran are exhausted -- this gives the energy and motivation to continue to hit the streets."</p>

<p>Milad Alami's drama "Opponent" stars Payman Maadi from "A Separation", as a closeted gay man seeking asylum with his wife and two daughters in northern Sweden.</p>

<p>Alami, who himself moved from Iran to Sweden as a child, said he aimed with his second feature to explore how official repression penetrates even the most intimate relationships, including a marriage.</p>

<p>"There are walls between them (the couple) that created this feeling of not being able to talk to each other," he said in notes for the film.</p>

<p>The wife Maryam senses her husband's inner conflict even as he keeps it under wraps for fear of reprisal. "That's a big thing in Iran," Alami said.</p>

<p>For those who have left Iran, the struggle to find out who they really are begins anew, he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Iran's main filmmakers' union on Tuesday called on authorities to release renowned dissident director Jafar Panahi, who has been imprisoned for six months.</p>

<p>Panahi, 62, one of Iran's most awarded filmmakers, was arrested on July 11 and is serving a six-year sentence handed down in 2010.</p>

<p>The House of Cinema, which brings together professional filmmakers in Iran, called for his release "as soon as possible", in a statement posted on its website.</p>

<p>It appealed for Iran's judiciary to take into account the "physical condition and illness" of the filmmaker, without elaborating.</p>

<p>Panahi has won the top prizes in Venice for "The Circle" and Berlin for "Taxi", as well as best screenplay at Cannes for "Three Faces".</p>

<p>On top of his six-year sentence, he was handed a 20-year ban from making or writing films, travelling or even speaking in the media, but he continued to work in Iran.</p>

<p>He was convicted of "propaganda against the system" after supporting 2009 protests over the disputed re-election of then president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.</p>

<p>In July, Panahi was arrested at the Tehran court where he had gone to follow the case of another award-winning director, Mohammad Rasoulof, who had been detained a few days before.</p>

<p>On Wednesday, Rasoulof's lawyer told AFP that his client had been released on January 7 for two weeks on health grounds.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, a court sentenced documentary filmmaker Mojgan Ilanlou "to six years in prison and 74 lashes" for conspiracy against the country's national security, the reformist Shargh newspaper reported on its website Tuesday.</p>

<p>Ilanlou had been "detained for 90 days and spent 40 days of this period in solitary confinement", the publication said.</p>

<p>France, too, followed suit on Monday and summoned Iran’s envoy over the regime’s crackdown on demonstrations.</p>

<p>"The Iranian charge d'affaires will be summoned today to the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs to convey our firmest condemnation of these executions and the current repression in Iran," the&nbsp;ministry&nbsp;said.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Germany lodged its protest against the executions, with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock calling Iranian envoy in Berlin "to make unmistakably clear that the brutal repression, the oppression and the terrorising of its own population as well as the most recent two executions will not remain without&nbsp;consequence".</p>

<p>On Wednesday, the Iranian Students' News Agency cites that the actress had left Evin Prison after posting bail. She was welcomed by family and friends outside the jail with bouquets. Photos of her outside the jail show her without a hijab. Several Hollywood stars had signed an open letter urging for the release of Alidoosti. Filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, who worked with Alidoosti in several films too had spoken in support of her weeks back.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The latest development comes weeks after a jewellery shop and a restaurant by the ex-footballer were shut down after he pledged his support on social media.</p>

<p>The Iranian authorities have been coming hard on the protesters, who have been on the streets against the government over the death of Mahasa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died in police custody after being detained for violating rules related to Islamic headscarf.</p>

<p>People from all walks of life have joined the three-month-long protest, which is threatening to oust the theocracy that has been in place since the 1979 Islamic revolution.</p>

<p>People have been relying heavily on social media platforms, which the government is trying to shut down.</p>

<p>Iran has blamed the Western countries, Israel and Saudi Arabia for inciting the unrest, accompanied by the arrest of foreign nationalism which is being viewed as a PR exercise in an effort to shift the blame away from the Iranian leadership.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, seven people belonging to Britain were arrested “for their unconstructive role in the recent developments”.</p>

<p>“Some countries, especially the one you mentioned, had an unconstructive role regarding the recent developments in Iran. Their role was totally destructive and incited the riots," Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said, according to Reuters.</p>

<p>The British foreign ministry had said it was seeking further information from Iranian authorities on the reported arrests.</p>

<p>“Mohsen Shekari, a rioter who blocked Sattar Khan Street in Tehran on September 25 and wounded one of the security guards with a machete, was executed this morning," the judiciary's Mizan Online website said.</p>

<p>The revolutionary court in Tehran had convicted him of waging "war against God" under Iran's Islamic sharia law on November 1.</p>

<p>Shekari appealed the ruling in the Supreme Court, but the top court upheld it on November 20.</p>

<p>The judiciary said that Shekari drew his weapon "with the intention of killing, causing terror and disturbing the order and security of society".</p>

<p>The Iranian regime views the anti-hijab protests, which have been spreading across the country for the past three months, as “riots”, and has used paramilitary force to suppress the agitation.</p>

<p>Rights groups claimed that more than 500 protesters, including children, have died, but Iran estimates it to be 300.</p>

<p>Some days before,&nbsp;similar food poisoning breakouts were reported at two other universities, Al-Zahra University in Tehran and Isfahan University of Technology, and both were believed to have originated from canteens.</p>

<p>“Our past experiences of similar incidents at the Isfahan University negates the authorities’ reason for this mass food poisoning,” the group wrote on Telegram.</p>

<p>According to reports, some university clinics closed down or ran out of supplies to treat dehydration, leading to speculation that the outbreak was planned to curb the three-day strike in response to the Iranian regime’s claims to have shut down the controversial morality police, Arab News reported.</p>

<p>Following the incident, students of Isfahan University protested, demanding the resignation of the university officials.</p>

<p>One of the six people facing the death penalty over the current anti-government protests in Iran has reportedly been subject to "mock executions" in prison.</p>

<p>Sahand Noormohammadzadeh was found guilty of "enmity against god" last month over accusations of blocking traffic and setting a bin on fire and is one of those facing a death sentence.</p>

<p>The 27-year-old as per the Iranian judiciary's Mizan news agency was on trial before a Revolutionary Court for "[acts of] vandalism and arson of public property with the aim of causing disruption to the country's peace and order and confronting the Islamic government".</p>

<p>As evidence the court presented a video of a masked man performing the alleged acts of vandalism; the masked man who it's been alleged is Sahand Noormohammadzadeh can be seen tearing down a railing and placing it between traffic and pushing a burning garbage bin onto the road.</p>

<p>However, the accused has denied all allegations, his lawyers claim that there's no evidence that the masked man on the tape is in fact him.</p>

<p>Reportedly the prosecution may be based on a letter of apology accepting these charges, which as per BBC could've been signed under false pretenses. As per BBC Persian's sources, the 27-year-old might've been lied to about his mother suffering a heart attack and promised one last conversation with the dying woman in lieu of signing the letter of apology.</p>

<p>Following the conviction of the six people on death row, Amnesty International has expressed concerns over "sham trials".</p>

27-year-old Iranian protester on death row subjected to 'mock executions' three times: Report

<p>Five people were sentenced to death over the killing of a Basij paramilitary force member during the widespread protests in Iran, the country’s judiciary said on Tuesday. The spokesperson for the judiciary – Massoud Setayeshi – also said that 11 people, including three children, were also sentenced to prison over the death of the soldier who was identified as Ruhollah Ajamian.</p>

<p>According to AFP, the prosecutors in the case told the court that Ajamian was killed by a group of people who were paying tribute to a protester Hadis Najafi. Najafi was killed in the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini and during the ceremonies making 40 days of her death, the mourners attacked members of the paramilitary forces and Ajamian ended up losing his life.</p>

<p>While the trial started with 11 people on the stands, four more were added by the police under the accusation of “corruption on earth”. Mizan Online website reported that all 15 defendants were charged in relation to the crimes and were handed out various degrees of punishments.</p>

<p>The protests in Iran were sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini who was found dead after she was detained by the Iranian morality police for flouting the country’s hijab laws. The post-mortem report revealed trauma injuries to both her head and body pointing towards police torture.</p>

<p>Since the start of the protests, Iranian forces believe that 300 people have been killed including more than 30 members of the security forces. Over 5000 people have also been arrested.</p>

<p>Following a series of airstrikes by Iran and Turkey against opposition organisations in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, Baghdad announced on Wednesday that it will redeploy federal troops along its borders with the two nations.</p>

<p>In a statement following a government security meeting presided over by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, the nation said that authorities had decided to "establish a plan to redeploy Iraqi border guards... along the border with Iran and Turkey".</p>

<p>The group claimed to have verified the deaths of 42 Iranian Kurdish citizens in nine places over the course of the previous week, practically all of whom were allegedly&nbsp;gunned down directly.</p>

Iran's supreme leader Khamenei warns 'foreign enemies' may target workers as protests rage

<p>Amid the ongoing protests in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, a woman who allegedly died after being detained by Tehran's morality police, reports suggest that the middle eastern nation has given death threats to citizens in Canada and the United Kingdom who have been vocal about the incident.</p>

<p>On Friday, Canada’s spy agency the, Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), in a statement said that they are investigating reports of people who have received “credible” death threats from Iran which are “designed to silence those who speak out publicly” against them. “CSIS is actively investigating several threats to life emanating from the Islamic Republic of Iran based on credible intelligence,” it said.&nbsp;</p>

The statement which was first reported by CBC said that the agency is also working closely with Iranian-Canadian communities which are allegedly being “disproportionately” targeted. Notably, Canada has imposed several sanctions against Tehran over alleged human rights abuses, including the death of Mahsa Amini.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, in the UK, at least seven armed vehicles have been deployed outside Iran International television studios in west London after two of its UK-based journalists were threatened by Tehran.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reportedly, they received “severe and credible” threats for their coverage of the ongoing protests on the UK-based Persian language media company. The channel has been dubbed as a “terrorist” organisation by the regime, said a report by AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While speaking to the news agency, the media outlet’s spokesperson also said that the threats against them have escalated due to their 24-hour coverage of the protests in Iran. He also said that the presence of the armoured vehicles was a “massive deterrence” which has reassured the employees.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes days after the British intelligence agency, MI5 director general Ken McCallum said that the growing threat from Iran “most frequently crosses into terrorism,” which has made at least 10 attempts to “kidnap or even kill British or UK-based individuals perceived as enemies of the regime,” since the beginning of this year alone, as reported by WION earlier.&nbsp;</p>

On Friday, Canada’s spy agency the, Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), in a statement said that they are investigating reports of people who have received “credible” death threats from Iran which are “designed to silence those who speak out publicly” against them. “CSIS is actively investigating several threats to life emanating from the Islamic Republic of Iran based on credible intelligence,” it said. Notably, Canada has imposed several sanctions against Tehran over alleged human rights abuses, including the death of Mahsa Amini. Meanwhile, in the UK, at least seven armed vehicles have been deployed outside Iran International television studios in west London after two of its UK-based journalists were threatened by Tehran. Reportedly, they received “severe and credible” threats for their coverage of the ongoing protests on the UK-based Persian language media company. The channel has been dubbed as a “terrorist” organisation by the regime, said a report by AFP. He also said that the presence of the armoured vehicles was a “massive deterrence” which has reassured the employees. This comes days after the British intelligence agency, MI5 director general Ken McCallum said that the growing threat from Iran “most frequently crosses into terrorism,” which has made at least 10 attempts to “kidnap or even kill British or UK-based individuals perceived as enemies of the regime,” since the beginning of this year alone, as reported by WION earlier. Videos and pictures shared on the social media showed that the forces attacked the protesters who had gathered to protest against the custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini and they even beat up women who were not wearing the mandatory hair coverings in public.</p>

<p>The videos showed that the metro station was crowded with people – some of whom were protesting Amini’s death – and the forces ended up hitting them with batons and sticks.</p>

<p>The protests have intensified in the past few days as it is the third anniversary of “Bloody November” when several protesters were killed in Iran for protesting against fuel prices.</p>

<p>Amini was detained by the morality police for not wearing the hijab in public and later, she was found dead with signs of trauma to her head and body. The death sparked massive protests all around the country and women came out in public to burn hijabs and cut their hair as a mark of rebellion.</p>

While the United States and various western countries have imposed sanctions on Iran, it has not stopped the government from implementing tougher measures.</p>
