Indian taxpayers with lingering doubts can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has initiated a taxpayer-friendly move, extinguishing eligible outstanding direct tax demands up to Rs 1 lakh per individual.

As per the order issued on February 13, 2024, the process to remit and extinguish qualifies for outstanding tax demands as of January 31, 2024.

This initiative, outlined in the 2024 Interim Budget, aims to clear the books for millions and streamline the tax ecosystem.

Wiping the slate clean

This move targets a significant chunk of taxpayers burdened by "petty, non-verified, non-reconciled or disputed" demands dating back to 1962.

These demands, often stemming from the Income-tax Act 1961, Wealth-tax Act 1957, and Gift-tax Act 1958, have caused undue anxiety and hindered refunds for many.

How much relief?

The remission varies based on assessment years:

Importantly, an overall cap of Rs 1 lakh per taxpayer exists, excluding demands related to tax deducted at source (TDS) or tax credited at source (TCS).

Not everyone gets a free pass

While offering widespread relief, the initiative excludes demands against tax deductors/collectors under TDS/TCS provisions and any ongoing criminal proceedings against taxpayers.

In a welcome move, the order eliminates the need to calculate interest on delayed payments for extinguished demands. This further eases the financial burden on relieved taxpayers.

The Indian government released security warnings which specifically targeted the users of Samsung Galaxy phones.

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) released a security advisory which highlighted the multiple vulnerabilities that have been impacting millions of Samsung Galaxy mobile phones, which include both older and newer models.

The security alert, which was issued on December 13, categorised the concern as high-risk and emphasised the urgency of updating the operating system or firmware in the existing Samsung mobile phones.

"Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Samsung products that could allow an attacker to bypass implemented security restrictions, access sensitive information, and execute arbitrary code on the targeted system," said CERT, in its vulnerability note.

The note emphasised the issues which might affect Samsung mobile phones that have been using Android versions 11 and above.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday (Dec 13) slammed the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for its statement criticising the decision by the Indian Supreme Court to uphold the abrogation of Article 370 in the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, during a presser, said New Delhi rejected OIC's statement, terming it 'ill-informed and ill-intended'.

“India rejects the statement issued by the General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on a judgment of the Indian Supreme Court," said Bagchi.

"It is both ill-informed and ill-intended. That OIC does so at the behest of a serial violator of human rights and an unrepentant promoter of cross-border terrorism makes its action even more questionable. Such statements only undermine OIC’s credibility," he added, in an oblique reference to Pakistan.

A day after the top court issued its verdict, OIC expressed "concern" over the decision, claiming the reversal of Article 370 was "illegal and unilateral".

"The General Secretariat reaffirms its solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their quest for the right of self-determination and reiterates its call on the international community to enhance its efforts to resolve the issue of Jammu and Kashmir in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions," OIC said in the statement.

Notably, OIC has 57 member states from across four continents and describes itself as the voice of the Muslim world. The organisation has been known for taking a radical approach to Kashmir and has sided with Pakistan which claims authority over parts of the region.

In a historic judgment, the apex court on Monday (Dec 11) approved the Union government's 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370.

While reading out the verdict, the CJI made it clear that Article 370 was a temporary provision “on a reading of the historical context in which it was included" and thus its exclusion was perfectly in the realms of constitutional boundary. He added that J&K holds no internal sovereignty after accession to India.

"It was only to further the relationship with the Union which was already defined under Article 370 and the proclamation by Yuvraj Karan Singh," he said.

India's central government is planning to replace the outdated criminal laws. The government has greenlit the introduction of criminal law amendment bills.

The Delhi High Court has sought the central government's stand on whether the mother of Nimisha Priya, a Malayali nurse who has been sentenced to death in Yemen, can travel to the war-ravaged country to secure her daughter's freedom by paying blood money or 'diyah'.

The Delhi High Court has sought the central government's stand on whether the mother of Nimisha Priya, a Malayali nurse who has been sentenced to death in Yemen, can travel to the war-ravaged country to secure her daughter's freedom by paying blood money or 'diyah'. Justice Subramonium Prasad presiding over the case granted time till December 11 to the government to come up with a response. Meanwhile, the counsel appearing for Priya's mother Prema Kumari has been asked to file an affidavit carrying proper details about the persons who will be willing to accompany her to Yemen to negotiate the deal. The 34-year-old nurse from Kerala is facing a death sentence after she was convicted of murdering Talal Abdo Mahidi in July 2017, when she allegedly injected him with sedatives to get hold of her passport from him. As Yemen follows Sharia law, Priya can secure a pardon from the victim's family by paying diyah. Islamic countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan and UAE also have 'diyah' as part of their modern-day legal system. Watch | Gravitas: India nurse's appeal against death penalty dismissed by Yemen court × No India-Yemen diplomatic ties The Indian government, however, doesn't seem too interested in the demand put forth by Priya's mother. The counsel said India does not have any diplomatic ties with Yemen and sending the mother may lead to a dangerous situation where even her safety is compromised. “Today they want to go there to negotiate blood money. We don’t want to get it converted into a ransom demand situation. There is no Indian presence there. The Embassy there is closed except one or two clerical local persons who are there just to collect letters and send them to where our Embassy is,” the Indian government counsel was quoted as saying by LiveLaw. Yemeni capital Sana'a is controlled by the Houthi rebels who have been locked in a civil war with the official government, based in-exile in Saudi Arabia. New Delhi does not recognise the Houthis so a trip for any Indian citizen looks highly unlikely. However, that hasn't deterred Priya's mother who says she will do everything in her ability to get her daughter free. "I will go to Yemen and seek their forgiveness. I will apologise to them, I'll tell them, take my life but please spare my daughter. Nimisha has a young daughter who needs her mother," Kumari, who lives in the southern Indian city of Kochi, told BBC. Nimisha was barely 19 when she left for Yemen to work as a nurse in a government-run hospital. She returned to India in 2011 and married Tomy Thomas with whom she has a daughter. India has announced a substantial allocation of 11.8 trillion rupees ($141.63 billion) to extend its free food grains program for the next five years, according to Information Minister Anurag Thakur.

The program, aimed at ensuring food and nutrition security for 813.5 million people, will address the needs of the poor and vulnerable sections of the population. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government had previously declared the extension of the welfare scheme, slated to conclude in December, by an additional five years.

The decision, approved in a recent cabinet meeting, underscores the commitment to fortify food security and alleviate financial challenges for the marginalised segments of society.

The ambitious initiative comes just ahead of the upcoming general elections in early 2024.

"Free food grains will strengthen food security and mitigate any financial hardship of the poor and vulnerable sections of the population," stated the government in response to the decision.

Despite the financial commitment, the government remains optimistic about achieving its fiscal deficit target for the current financial year. According to Reuters, Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth expressed confidence in maintaining fiscal discipline while allocating resources to vital social welfare programs.

Ajay Seth, while addressing a separate event, assured that the government is on track to meet its fiscal deficit target of reducing it to 5.9 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) for the fiscal year ending March 31.

The commitment to fiscal responsibility is part of a broader strategy, with India aiming to further reduce the fiscal deficit to 4.5 per cent of GDP by the fiscal year 2025-26. This disciplined approach to fiscal management demonstrates the government's intent to balance social welfare initiatives with fiscal prudence, an attempt towards ensuring sustainable economic growth.

The newly formed alliance of 26 opposition parties, INDIA or Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, will be bringing a no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha against the government on Wednesday, July 26, Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told ANI news agency.

As the Manipur issue continues to remain a hot topic in national politics, the alliance has formed a notice draft. India: Trust vote against Modi govt accepted by Lok Sabha speaker

A report by Bloomberg News citing people familiar with the matter, on Tuesday (July 11) reported that the Indian Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has ordered an inspection into the ed-tech startup Byju’s accounts over alleged governance lapses and compliance failures.

Indian government to probe Byju’s accounts?

The report by Bloomberg citing sources also said that the ministry had sought a report on the Indian ed-tech startup in six weeks. The decision to escalate the matter to the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) will be based on the findings of the inspection, the report added.

CNBC-TV18, on Monday, citing ministry sources reported that the company, as of now, is not facing any investigations by the SFIO. But the matter is being probed by the ministry, the report added. The matter will reportedly be taken up with the SFIO following the ministry probe into Byju’s alleged financial reporting compliance failures and governance lapses.

This comes days after a report by The Hindu Business Line, citing an anonymous source, said that the SFIO, a multi-disciplinary organisation which operates under MCA, has already launched an investigation into Byju’s case.

In a statement to Mint, following the recent reports, Byju’s said it has “not received any communication from the SFIO to date.” Meanwhile, the ed-tech start-up has reportedly decided to create a Board Advisory Committee (BAC) to handle the corporate governance issues.

Indian government orders probe into Byju’s account books: Reports

Amid piling consumers' grievances related to internet speed, the Government of India is mulling over a proposal to make it compulsory for mobile phone makers to disclose their devices' upload and download speed capacities to the users, as stated by people aware about the matter.

Since the internet speed's quality depends on both the device specifications and the network, the step is aimed at ensuring that users are well aware of smartphones and other devices like laptops and tablets and are making an informed decision during the purchase of the product.

Currently, the matter is being handled by the Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC) under the Department of Telecommunications. A stakeholders’ consultation will be carried out by TEC before any final directions are issued by the government on the matter, as per the government officials.

“There are phones ranging between '6,000-200,000' in the country. While mostly people buy phones looking at the camera, battery, built etc, we also want the companies to give an idea about the maximum data speeds that the devices would support. The plan is to make handset data speeds as one of the performance indicators,” stated a government official, adding that they are considering the rules as per international standards like 3GPP.

“We just want a declaration from the handset makers. This would not increase the cost significantly for such companies,” another official stated.

Cost of making mobile phones to rise?

As per current standards, the device makers need to comply and give information on the basis of parameters like battery safety, radiated emissions, Indian language support, mobile emergency support, etc.

“Data communication performance of handsets seems to be an interesting move if mandated by the government as the same will benefit consumers with regard to choice of phones,” stated Faisal Kawoosa, chief analyst at Techarc.

Kawoosa added that if declaration on data speeds capacity is made compulsory, it will lead to an increase in cost borne by the mobile phone companies if they demanded a testing certification for that.

As per experts, the smartphone's performance, including its data speed, depends on the processors which are used in the mobile phones. Data communication capacity is better in the premium handsets.

“The direction on data speeds capacity in phones when finalised, will help advanced users who want to have this kind of information. The requirement should be seen more from a compliance point of view,” stated Prachir Singh, senior research analyst at Counterpoint.

Mobile phone makers to compulsorily disclose internet data capacity? Here's what Indian govt plans

The Indian government has responded after Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey made sensational claims saying the social media platform received threats of being booted out of the country after not accepting the request to block certain accounts at the peak of the farmers' protests.

Union Minister of State for Electronics & Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar took to Twitter to post a rebuttal where he said Dorsey was attempting to "brush out a very dubious period of Twitter's history".

"Twitter under Dorsey and his team were in repeated and continuous violations of India law. As a matter of fact they were in non-compliance with law repeatedly from 2020 to 2022 and it was only June 2022 when they finally complied," said Chandrasekhar.

The minister added that the government was attempting to remove misinformation traversing the social media platform.

"During the protests in January 2021, there was a lot of misinformation and even reports of genocide which were definitely fake. GoI was obligated to remove misinformation from the platform because it had the potential to further inflame the situation based on fake news," he added.

The farmers' protests started after the Modi government brought three controversial farm laws. Thousands of farmers from across the country camped in and around the capital city of Delhi for nearly a year, forcing the government to repeal the laws in November 2021.

Accused of sexually harassing several women wrestlers, including minors, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh – also booked under the POCSO Act, has alleged the law is being ‘misused on a large scale’ and that he will ‘force the ruling government to change it.’ Currently in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich regarding preparations for a rally of seers called by him in Ayodhya on June 5 - Bhushan made these comments on Thursday.

Several top wrestlers in the country, including Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik alongside Vinesh Phogat, among others, are protesting against Brij Bhushan Singh, who is also a BJP MP from Kaiserganj, for alleged sexual harassment of women grapplers over a long period. These wrestlers, who had brought laurels for the country at various tournaments, are protesting at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar since April 23rd, calling for the arrest of the WFI chief.

As quoted by the PTI, Bhushan said, the POCSO Act was brought by the Congress government without examining its various aspects and that it is often misused against children, the elderly and seers.

Brij Bhushan also said that the allegations levelled against him are false.

Earlier, after many failed attempts by the wrestlers to register an FIR against Brij Bhushan Singh, Delhi Police lodged two against him, with the first FIR about the sexual harassment allegations by a minor wrestler, for which Bhushan is booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, whereas, the second FIR is related to outraging modesty.

Meanwhile, when these wrestlers first protested against the WFI chief early this year, the Sports Ministry took action, and an overnight committee got formed, chaired by the legendary Mary Kom, to begin the probe into the matter. However, a few months later, when no action was taken against the accused, the wrestlers went back to protesting.

After several other sports personalities raised their voices against the same and backed the wrestlers, Delhi Police finally lodged two FIRs.

As of now, till the probe is finished and a decision is taken, the Sports Ministry has stopped all activities of the wrestling federation.

India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on Thursday (May 25), urged people to maintain peace in the violence-hit state of Manipur and said that he would visit the northeastern state soon. This comes a day after at least one person was killed and one other person was injured as fresh violence rocked India’s northeastern state of Manipur.

Amit Shah announces visit

Speaking at an event in the Indian city of Guwahati, the home minister said, “There were clashes in Manipur after the verdict of a court. I would appeal to both groups, they should maintain peace, and justice will be done with everyone.”

Shah said that the visit will take place “soon” and that he will stay there for three days to “talk to people of Manipur for establishing peace”. He added, “The Centre will ensure that justice is given to all who suffered in the clashes which broke out in the state, but people must hold a dialogue to ensure peace in the state.”

Violence-hit Manipur

Officials on Thursday confirmed the death of a 30-year-old man, Toijam Chandramoni, who was shot during the violence a day prior, while Leichombam Abungnao, aged 22, was injured. Officials believe that the suspected militants opened fire at the group of people, displaced during the recent ethnic clashes in Churachandpur and took shelter in a relief camp at Moirang in the Bishnupur district.

At a press conference, state security advisor Kuldiep Singh said that the violence followed incidents of arson by suspected militants in the Tronglaobi area late Tuesday. “The villagers and those living in the Moirang camp were angry over the burning of their houses,” said the senior police officer, as quoted by news agency PTI.

According to the police, three houses were burnt on Tuesday night and in retaliation, people from the community burnt down four houses. Singh said that while the situation as of now is tense, it is “under control”.

On Wednesday, the house of Manipur minister Konthoujam Govindas in the Bishnupur district was vandalised after a group of people claimed that the authorities are not doing enough to protect the locals from the militants belonging to another community, said a police official. The minister and his family were not present at the house which came under attack.

This comes as the state has witnessed sporadic incidents of violence since the ethnic clashes between the tribal Kuki and the non-tribal Meitei communities first broke out, earlier this month. According to media reports, over 70 people have been killed while more than a thousand have been displaced. Some 2,000 houses have been burned down across the Indian state, reported AFP.

Separatist leader Amritpal Singh, currently on the run from the authorities, released a video on Wednesday. The Khalistan supporter quashed rumours that he had been arrested by the police, saying he remains at large. The fugitive urged top Sikh leaders to convene a mass gathering at Damdama Sahib on the occasion of Baisakhi on April 14. Singh requested Giani Harpreet Singh, the acting jathedar of Akal Takht (the highest temporal seat of Sikhs) to take a 'very tough stand' on the issue and attend the proposed meeting. Singh further claimed in the clip that if the government came to his home to arrest him, he would have surrendered. "If the government wanted to arrest me, they could have come to my home and I would have surrendered. But they made it a huge show and they blocked us after gathering a force of thousands and I escaped with the Guru's blessings," he could be heard saying. #BREAKING: Khalistani Radical Amritpal Singh releases a new video from hiding in Punjab. Singh claims to be the leader of 'Waris Punjab De' outfit and has been supporting calls for the balkanisation of the northern Indian state of Punjab. Indian government discontinues Air Suvidha form filling for international arrivals

The Government of India is soon going to place certain new guidelines for social media influencers making it mandatory for them to declare their association with a brand or product they endorse.

"The department of consumer affairs is coming out with guidelines on social media influencers. It is creating dos and don'ts for them," an official source has told a news agency.

As per proposed guidelines, when a social media influencer endorses any brand after taking money, they will have to declare their association with that brand.

Influencers often endorse products and brands on their page for which they are sometimes paid. Brands like to promote their products through these influencers as they enjoy a large following.

The guidelines will have to be followed by influencers as well as celebrities who endorse any brand on social media.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), under the Department of Consumer Affairs, has completed consultation with all stakeholders concerned on the matter.
The posts will now have disclaimers when it's an endorsement. The guidelines might come into implementation within the next 15 days. If violated, a person may have to scoff up USD 12,500 for the first time, USD 25,000 the second time, and USD 62,500 for continuous violation.

Meanwhile, the department has also completed the process of developing a framework to curb fake reviews posted on e-commerce websites.

In May, the department along with the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) held a virtual meeting with stakeholders, including e-commerce entities, to discuss the magnitude of fake reviews on their platforms.

Fake reviews often mislead customers who shop online, typically without getting to see the product physically or experiencing it.

Influencers in India to be fined for not declaring commercial ties with promoted brands, products

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) and its nodal security agency Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) have issued a warning to Apple watch users, citing the device as a 'high severity' security risk. According to the warning issued, anyone running watchOS 8.7 or older is expected to be affected.

The government agency revealed that Apple Watch carried multiple vulnerabilities which make it an ideal target for hackers. The warning mentions that remote hackers may be able to get hold of the wearer's device and using the vulnerabilities, execute arbitrary codes and bypass security restrictions on the device.

If the hackers do manage to break into the Apple watch remotely, they will be able to access the private information of the user. With more and more users using Apple watches to communicate sensitive data such as their bank details, the hacking could prove catastrophic.

"These vulnerabilities exist in Apple watch due to buffer overflow in AppleAVD component; an authorization issue in AppleMobileFileInterity component; out-of-bounds write in Audio, ICU and WebKit component; type confusion in Multi-Touch component; Multiple out-of-bounds write and memory corruption in GPU Drivers component; out-of-bounds read in Kernel component; and memory initialization in libxml2 component." the agency explained the vulnerabilities.

Before the watch users get panicked, Apple has already rolled out a new OS update for the watch. The watchOS 8.7 update has security updates and patches, as advised by CERT-IN.

Thus, all users need to do is update their device by installing the latest software. To do so, the user needs to be connected to a wi-fi network and make sure that the device has at least 50 per cent battery.

On the watch, one needs to open settings and tap on software update in the General section. If the update is available, it will start downloading and the user can follow the instructions from there.
