"It's a difficult place to win... a Test match let alone a Test series. So you know if we're able to topple that mountain that would be huge. I think if we can win India that would be bigger than an Ashes series," Steve Smith said in a video uploaded by cricket.com.au.

Mitchell Starc, on the other hand, said India is hardest place to travel in world cricket, and that, playing a series here would be very special for the group.

Meanwhile, Starc is currently nursing a finger injury he endured during the Boxing Day Test against South Africa, and as a result, will miss the first Test. Alongside him, seamer Josh Hazlewood and all-rounder Cameron Green will also be out of reckoning for the Nagpur game.

Adding that the wickets in India are sure to turn from day one itself and knowing that Ashwin will come into play very soon in every game, Khawaja said he needs to figure on how to play him and score runs against him.

"But it's one of those really good challenges. The wicket's going to turn here at some point, whether day one, day three, or day four, and he's going to be in the game and bowl a lot of overs. So it's all about figuring out how I'm going to play against him, how I'm going to score runs against him, what he might do. If you bat a long time against him, he's going to change his game plans against you," Khawaja added.

It was during the Asia Cup in Dubai last year when Jadeja suffered a knee injury and got ruled out for indefinite time. His absence was felt as India was left wanting for answers in crunch games against top teams at the mega event in Australia. Upon returning to the side following his match-winning performance with the ball in his first competitive game since August last year, Jadeja picked up eight wickets against Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy Group game in January.

The 34-year-old revealed he had a choice to go for the surgery after the World Cup too; but only after knowing from the doctors that his chances of playing would drop down significantly if he decides not to go for it immediately, Jadeja changed his mind and went ahead with it.

"I was eagerly waiting to make a comeback and play for India. I had been struggling with my knee for some time, so surgery was needed. I had to take the decision whether to go for the surgery before the World Cup or after. Doctors advised me to do it before the World Cup because chances were less of playing at the World Cup had I not got the surgery done. So, I made up my mind to go for it," Jadeja said in the video released by the BCCI.

With a lot is at stake from both sides, the spin-heavy Indian bowling line-up have some tricks up their sleeves, and for them to be successful they want the close-in fielders to remain attentive and active at the same time. In an exclusive chat with the Times of India (TOI), the right-handed Pujara opened about facing the Australian bowlers, how he is preparing for the upcoming series and much more.

The Aussies are known to be throwing verbal volleys in addition to playing very competitively when it comes to facing&nbsp;India. While the previous three meetings have resulted in India taking the upper hand, the Australians are expected to come all guns blazing this time.

“They’re a competitive side. They throw a challenge at you, and I’m someone who likes to have that (kind of a) battle. It’s not just the verbal battle that I’m talking about, but the cricketing battle. There’s been a lot of talk about the Aussies doing a lot of chat on the field, but the important part that I look up for as a cricketer is a cricketing challenge. They are always a fighting team,” Pujara told TOI.

Meanwhile, during first of the two previous series Down Under in 2018/19, Pujara played some mammoth knocks that saw India winning the Test series in Australia for the first time. When asked about the tour in particular, where he scored 521 runs in four Tests at an average of above 70 – that included three hundreds too, Pujara said off all the series he’s played in, that one was on the top.

They are always a fighting team,” Pujara told TOI. As per the fast bowler&nbsp;he sustained this injury mainly due to the damp run-ups at the SCG during the final Proteas Test. The fast bowler added that he didn’t bowl much during Australia’s training camp near Bengaluru and would only resume bowling a couple of days before start of the Nagpur Test.

"It's [the injury] still lingering from the [Sydney] Test match," Hazlewood said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. "We obviously bowled after a lot of rain and the jump-offs were quite soft, where we were taking off from and they ended up replacing them as well.

"It sort of worked to a degree, but just that extra load jumping off a soft ground to bowl and again first Test match your body is not used to that sort of workload as well. I was bowling a fair bit leading into the [India] tour at home and sort of just pushing up against it. It probably wasn't recovering as well as I would have liked between each session.

"So thought we'd give it a few days here straight off the bat and try and get over the hump and have a bowl from Tuesday and hope it goes well," the fast bowler added.

Star Aussie opener Usman Khawaja missed his flight to India due to the delay in his&nbsp;visa arrival,&nbsp;and is now set to travel on Thursday, February 2nd. As two sets of Australian players and coaching staff reached India on Tuesday, Khawaja was left behind waiting for his visa. As reported by the Cricbuzz, the delay was caused mainly because of the physical copy of the same was unavailable by the time the second set of Australian contingent left for India. Cricket Australia expects the visa to arrive by late Wednesday and Usman will be on his flight to India for the Border-Gavaskar series the next day.

The Australian team will first attend a four-day camp in Bengaluru before flying to Nagpur for the first Test. Upon announcing earlier that Australia will not play a tour game in India ahead of the marquee Test series, the team management arranged a two-day pre-series camp in Sydney where they practiced on torn and used pitches.

Meanwhile, Usman Khawaja was recently awarded Australia’s Men’s Test Player of the Year for 2022 on Monday for his stellar show in the five-day format in the last year&nbsp;– where he scored 1020 runs in 12 matches at an impressive average of 78.46. The 36-year-old opener also made it to the ICC’s Test Team of the Year alongside teammates Marnus Labuschagne, captain Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon.

Khawaja, who was part of Australia’s previous two tours to India in 2013 and 2017, is yet to play a Test there. A very good player of spin bowling, Islamabad-born Khawaja, during his last tour to Pakistan in March 2022, scored 496 runs in three Tests at an average of whopping 165.33. He scored two hundreds including his best of 160. This time against the spin-heavy Indian bowling line-up, he is expected to provide stability at the top.

We've got a lot of left handers. If there were to be any late changes, or Cameron Green doesn't make that first Test, we feel we have some good options."

His innings was well versed with shots all across the ground and against some of the smartest bowlers in this format. Coming off an incredible hundred the other day against the former winners, Adelaide Strikers – Smith scored 101 off 56 balls, hitting five fours and seven huge sixes.

Worried about the Australian team management’s choice of not opting to play a tour game ahead of the highly-anticipated Test series against India, former Aussie veteran&nbsp;Ian Healy feels this decision could eventually cost the visitors. Healy said the tour games aren’t really for the in-form players&nbsp;but for the newcomers in the team and especially for the spinners. Healy looked concerned while addressing this issue to SEN Radio on Thursday, adding had there been any tour games scheduled in between the four Tests, it would have been better for struggling players or for those who are on bench to get some match time.

"I think the spinners would like a 'bowl-off' into it and so the non-natural players who need some repetition and to grind before getting back into it. It's not for everyone practice matches, but it is for some," Healy said.

He added, "How do we get players back into form? There'll be no games in between the four Tests either. Someone who is going to be sitting on the bench for three matches might get dragged in; we've got to be careful."

But a Lance Morris, I want to keep him revving, I would be looking to find games for a few of those (players). We want them to play games, see if there's a club game if there is such a thing in India. I don't need him (Morris) getting stale or bored without form behind him," Healy added.

He said playing on Gabba-like wickets won’t help them prepare for the India tour where they are expected to be welcomed with rank-turners. 'Hurt' Adam Zampa rues India's tour as missed opportunity, says he is disappointed with selection

Currently leading the Test rankings for batters, Australia's Marnus Labuschagne is wary of a challenge from ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the Border-Gavaskar series, that begins in less than a month's time in Nagpur. Marnus and Ashwin had crossed paths before during the India-Australia Test series Down Under two years back where Ashwin had his number twice - once in Adelaide and then in Melbourne. Though Marnus didn't get out to Ashwin after that, he still has made little tweaks to his technique to ensure he produces his best performance against the daunting Indian spin attack on the rank-turners in India. Since both are known to be using their mind-games in different forms while playing on the field, Marnus said he is ready for yet another challenge against Ashwin.

"Since then [the last series] I've already started thinking," Labuschagne said. "I've changed some of my game because of what I've heard about Ashwin and how he bowled to me. I've adapted my game to try and foil a few of his ideas and ways he goes about it, so it's going to be a lovely game of chess and I can't wait for it," Marnus said.

Having made his Test debut in late 2018, Marnus climbed to the top of the batter's chart in such a short period. Following a super impressive summer at home this time where he notched up centuries and double hundreds against West Indies and South Africa, Marnus will now be busy playing the ongoing Big Bash League with Brisbane Heats. Talking about what he has on his mind, Marnus said he has been thinking extensively about different scenarios like what he's going to do against different bowlers on the tour. Though he said he already has some plans in place against the Indian spinners, it's just about executing them now.

"The preparation starts so far back. People think, right now it's Big Bash then you start thinking - but the thinking happens way ahead. Sitting in the top spot with a PCT of 75.56%, Australia has one leg in the finals. The only scenario in which they will fail to play the summit clash is if they lose to India 0-4 and Sri Lanka win their two matches in New Zealand. If Australia surrender in the Border-Gavaskar series, their PCT will drop down to 59.65 while Sri Lanka’s 2-0 win in New Zealand will take their PCT to 61.11.

In a case where Australia manages to play a draw against India, losing the series 0-3, and don’t concede any penalty points, their PCT would still be 61.40%, which would be marginally enough for them to qualify for the finals. They just have to ensure they are not conceding any penalty points, else they would be relying on other team’s results for their qualification.
