A tragic accident happened in Mumbai on Saturday (Dec 14) night when a biker was fatally hit by an electric public transport bus, just days after a major bus crash in Kurla claimed seven lives and left many injured.
The victim, 25-year-old Deekshik Vinod Rajput, was riding his motorcycle when a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus collided with him. The incident took place near Shivaji Nagar as the bus was heading towards the Kurla bus station.
Officials reported that Rajput fell under the right rear tyre of the bus and suffered severe head injuries. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The electric buses are currently leased by the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking. Following the accident, the police arrested the bus driver, 39-year-old Vinod Aabaji Rankhambe, and conductor Avinash Vikramrao Gite under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) Act. Authorities confirmed that further investigations into the matter are ongoing.

In that case, the bus driver, 54-year-old Sanjay More, was arrested. He reportedly lost control of the vehicle while operating route A322 from Kurla station to Sakinaka. Police charged More with culpable homicide not amounting to murder after learning he lacked experience driving electric vehicles (EVs). Investigators are also looking into whether the driver recklessly used the bus as a "weapon" in a congested area.
The bus involved in the accident was a 12-metre-long electric vehicle, manufactured by Hyderabad-based Olectra Greentech and leased to BEST.

A new study has found that over 1.5 million people die in India every year due to long-term exposure to air pollution and high PM2.5 levels. The study, published in The Lancet Planetary Health journal, said that the entire 1.4 billion population of the country breathes poor air with PM2.5 levels much higher than the recommended levels by the World Health Organization (WHO).

A team of researchers from Ashoka University, Haryana, and the Centre for Chronic Disease Control, New Delhi, found that 82 per cent of the Indian population lives in areas where PM2.5 levels are higher than the level recommended by the Indian National Ambient Air Quality Standards (40 microns per cubic metre).

Former External Affairs Minister and Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna died at his residence early Tuesday morning.

The 92-year-old veteran politician was ailing for quite some time, a family source said.

"S M Krishna is no more. He breathed his last at 2:45 am at his residence. Mortal remains are likely to be taken to Maddur today," the source said.

Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna is survived by wife Prema and two daughters.

Born in Somanahalli in Karnataka's Mandya district on May 1, 1932, Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna began his career in electoral politics in 1962 by winning the Maddur assembly seat as an independent.

He was then associated with the Praja Socialist Party before joining the Congress.

Later, he joined the BJP in March 2017, ending his nearly 50-year-long association with the Congress.

In January last year, Krishna announced his retirement from active politics, citing his age as the reason.

He was the 16th Chief Minister of Karnataka from October 11, 1999, to May 28, 2004, (from Congress).

He also served as the Governor of Maharashtra and was the External Affairs Minister during the Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government from 2009 to 2012.

A law graduate, Krishna studied in the US. He graduated from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and The George Washington University Law School in Washington DC, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.

Krishna served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from December 1989 to January 1993. He was also a member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha several times between 1971 and 2014.

Krishna was a member of both the Karnataka Assembly and Council and also served as Deputy Chief Minister (1993 to 1994).

He was Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president ahead of the 1999 assembly polls in which the party won and he became the CM.

Krishna is credited by many for putting Bengaluru on the global map as a fillip given to the IT sector during his tenure resulting in the city growing as India's Silicon Valley'.

Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot expressed grief over Krishna's death.

According to Indian officials, the repairman was contacted by a Pakistani agent, named Sahima, on Facebook. The operative told Gohil that she worked with the Pakistani Navy and would pay him INR 200 per day ($2.3/day) if he provided info about the names and number of Coast Guard ships arriving at the Okha jetty and their movement.

Officials revealed that the repairman was paid about $500 over the last seven months. The amount was transferred to the bank accounts of three of Gohil’s friends as the repairman didn’t have one of his own.

“Gohel was aware of what kind of information he was sharing and with whom. He knew this was illegal. Based on our initial investigation, it seems he did it for money. There are allegations that the accused even put chilli powder in the survivor’s genitals and also inserted a stick inside.

A police statement said the woman was having an extramarital affair with another person and was beaten up by his family members. Police have launched a probe into the incident following grave allegations by the nurse.

The incident took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Jalaun district when the woman was travelling to work on her scooter Thursday morning (Nov. 28). There are allegations the woman was stopped by some men midway and was dragged to nearby bushes where she was violated.

The husband of the woman said a man, along with his nephew and others, beat her up.

Having this designation is in direct benefit to the artisans and craft masters of Kashmir. It also puts the artisans on the Global map as the craft city. Two years ago, UNESCO also gave it the title of creative cities and now with the World Craft Council, this will all fall in the direction of bringing Kashmir in focus at a global level. But I have to say that Kashmiris are the most peaceful and hospitable people. “We have a family business of fabric production of fabric; this is camel wool with natural cotton and colors. So, our main concept is to do that fabric. We started with camel wool, later on to cotton and also added silk to it. Now we do home decor as well. I think it's very important to do such exchanges as I am aware of the Kashmiri crafts, we have our own technique of embroidery and this kind of event gives us the opportunity to exchange knowledge,” said Merjaan, a delegate from Turkmenistan.

A bridge to nowhere, quite literally, claimed the lives of three people in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday (Nov. 24). The three victims were travelling from Bareilly to Dataganj in Badaun district, along the Khalpur-Dataganj road. At around 10 am IST, their car cruised down an under-construction bridge with an open end.

The driver relied on GPS for navigation and didn’t realise a part of the bridge was missing. The car ended in the Ramganga River in no time, killing all three travellers, whose identities have not been revealed by police.

We cannot be at 3.3 crore population and still grow without the expenditure or infrastructure. We need a huge outlay on expenditure. We don't have it,” it stated. The bench also expressed frustration at the inefficiency of the city administration, pointing out that much of the burden of governance had fallen on the judiciary. “We have got a very inefficient system and all the organisations are working in silos. The entire load is coming to the judiciary. We are not supposed to be taking care of drains and unauthorised constructions, but half of the day we are doing this which is not our job. This has to be done by the administration,” it said, according to PTI. According to the official notification: “All industrial plants having pollution index score up to 20 as listed in the Schedule to this notification, subject to the condition that such plant shall inform in writing to the State Pollution Control Boards or the Pollution Control Committees.”

“For an average citizen, construction of a house is the culmination of years of hard work, dreams and aspirations. House embodies collective hope of security and future. If this is taken away, authorities must satisfy it is the only way,” the bench emphasised.

The court raised questions on whether authorities could demolish a home if only one resident faced accusations, effectively leaving others homeless. “Punishing such persons who have no connection with the crime by demolishing the house where they live in or properties owned by them is nothing but an anarchy and would amount to a violation of the right to life guaranteed under the Constitution,” the bench said.

“Such an action also cannot be done in respect of a person who is convicted of an offence. Even in the case of such a person the property/properties cannot be demolished without following the due process as prescribed by law. Such an action by the executive would be wholly arbitrary and would amount to an abuse of process of law. The executive in such a case would be guilty of taking the law in his hand and giving a go-bye to the principle of the rule of law,” the court observed.

"The executive cannot declare a person guilty, as this process is the fundamental aspect of the judicial review. Only on the basis of the accusations, if the executive demolishes the property/properties of such an accused person without following the due process of law, it would strike at the basic principle of rule of law and is not permissible," the court added.

"The chilling sight of a bulldozer demolishing a building, when authorities have failed to follow the basic principles of natural justice and have acted without adhering to the principle of due process, reminds one of a lawless state of affairs, where ‘might was right’," the court observed.

<h2>Demolition guidelines</h2>

Using its authority under Article 142 of the Constitution, the Supreme Court laid out specific demolition guidelines. It mandated that demolitions cannot proceed without a show cause notice, allowing the recipient 15 days (or the time specified in local laws) to respond.

“It is not a happy sight to see women, children and aged persons dragged to the street overnight. Heavens will not fall on the authorities if they hold their hands for some period,” the court said.

The show cause notice must include details of the alleged unauthorised construction, the specific violation, and the justification for demolition. Authorities are required to allow the accused to present their side before issuing a final order and 15 days will then be granted to allow the property owner to remove the unauthorised construction, with authorities stepping in only if no appeal halts the order.

The bench warned that violations of these guidelines could lead to contempt proceedings. Officers responsible for wrongful demolitions will be held liable for the restoration of the demolished property, with the costs deducted from their salaries.

Furthermore, the court directed all municipal authorities to establish a digital portal within three months, detailing show-cause notices and final orders for illegal structures.

The supreme&nbsp;court added that these directions do not apply to unauthorised structures on public spaces like roads, streets, footpaths, or water bodies, or in cases where a court has issued&nbsp;an&nbsp;order.

Demolition guidelines Using its authority under Article 142 of the Constitution, the Supreme Court laid out specific demolition guidelines. It mandated that demolitions cannot proceed without a show cause notice, allowing the recipient 15 days (or the time specified in local laws) to respond. “It is not a happy sight to see women, children and aged persons dragged to the street overnight. Heavens will not fall on the authorities if they hold their hands for some period,” the court said. The show cause notice must include details of the alleged unauthorised construction, the specific violation, and the justification for demolition. Authorities are required to allow the accused to present their side before issuing a final order and 15 days will then be granted to allow the property owner to remove the unauthorised construction, with authorities stepping in only if no appeal halts the order. Officers responsible for wrongful demolitions will be held liable for the restoration of the demolished property, with the costs deducted from their salaries. Furthermore, the court directed all municipal authorities to establish a digital portal within three months, detailing show-cause notices and final orders for illegal structures. The supreme court added that these directions do not apply to unauthorised structures on public spaces like roads, streets, footpaths, or water bodies, or in cases where a court has issued an order. Shouting from a police van after a court hearing on Monday (Nov 11), Roy told reporters that the former Commissioner framed him in the case and that other high-ranking officials were also linked to the matter.

“I am telling you it was Vineet Goyal who conspired the whole thing (rape and murder of RG Kar Medical College resident doctor) and framed me…They had threatened me and there were other big officers in it,” Roy alleged.

This comes as the Sealdah Court recently, on Nov 4, charged Roy under the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita.

Meanwhile, junior doctors from across the state, outraged by the brutal incident, have intensified calls for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to step in and demand strict punishment for those responsible.
