A huge police force was sent to the area and tear gas shells were fired to quell the mob which tried to confine the SDPO and other senior personnel at the spot. "We will continue our agitation till all those accused in the rape and murder of our minor daughter are arrested and convicts are punished. We also demand action against those who responded to the complaint late, which might have resulted in her death. Had the police acted promptly, the girl could have been rescued," Ganesh Dolui, a villager, said. The police, however, said the action was taken immediately after the complaint was received and an accused was arrested in connection with the alleged rape and murder of the girl. "After lodging of FIR at 9 pm on Friday, the police swung into action and arrested an accused this morning after an initial probe. Investigation is on and we are with the family of the deceased. Those involved in the arson at the police outpost and destroying of all important documents will be identified and action will be taken against them," the official added. Kultali TMC MLA Ganesh Mondal was chased away by the villagers when he went to the spot to pacify the locals who accused him of trying to support the "police inaction". Mondal later told reporters that he understood the grievances and anger of the people of the area but they should not take the law into their hands. "I have requested the police to investigate the matter thoroughly and frame charges against the accused,” he said. Mondal said she would stay at the hospital to meet the parents of the deceased and hear what they want. "I am not being allowed to meet the parents by the crowd. But I have been a grassroots political worker for a long. I cannot be forced to leave. Let me talk to the family first," she said. As demanded by the BJP and the CPI (M), the body of the girl was finally taken to a morgue in Kolkata for subsequent autopsy at a hospital. Authorities were alerted about the incident at around 1:45 am (local time) and arrived to find Akhtar slumped in his chair. Security footage from the hospital showed two boys entering the building calmly and walking straight to the doctor’s cabin before shooting him.

Security forces have said that this year there have been no reports of any local youngsters joining the terror ranks in the Kashmir Valley.&nbsp;

"The terrorism today is largely fuelled from across the border, and I think that much is very clear. We have not had any active recruitment&nbsp;as I see in the last year and a half. The numbers last year were down to a dozen across the year. And this year they are almost next to nil. The official number with agencies is at 80 and you can see that's the lowest number in many years. We have gone below 100. It has been an endeavour&nbsp;of security forces to bring these numbers down. I am quite confident the way we are going ahead, these numbers will keep going down. We could be looking at a lesser figure&nbsp;by the middle of next year,"&nbsp;said&nbsp;Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, general officer commanding the Srinagar-based 15 Corps.&nbsp;

Security forces in the region also believe that maintaining peace and improvement in the current atmosphere is the biggest challenge for them. India’s top court granted major relief to Indian spiritual teacher Sadhguru on Thursday (Oct 3), as it stayed police action against his Isha Foundation. A thief felt compelled to return the idols of Hindu deities he had stolen from a temple in the Indian holy city of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, after he was constantly haunted by scary dreams besides sudden illness&nbsp;of his family members. The thief had reportedly stolen the precious ashtadhatu idols of Radha Krishna from the temple located near the famous Gau Ghat ashram under the limits of Nawabganj police station in the trans-Ganga pocket of Prayagraj district. The thief left behind a confession letter in which he revealed that he was compelled to return the idols after scary nightmares.

As per a report in Times of India, local police said&nbsp;that the thief asked for forgiveness in the letter.

Nawabganj inspector Anil Kumar Mishra was quoted as saying by TOI, “Mahant Swami Jairam Das Maharaj, the priest of Gau Ghat Ashram temple, had lodged a complaint with Nawabganj police station stating that the precious ashtadhatu idols of Radha Krishna was stolen from the temple on the night of September 23. We registered an FIR against unidentified thieves under the appropriate sections of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.”

The state minister for public works department and urban development, Vikramaditya Singh, was summoned on Thursday (Sep 26) by Congress leadership in New Delhi and reprimanded for the order. Congress party, which currently rules the northern Indian state, had earlier criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Uttar Pradesh for issuing a similar diktat.

Congress leadership has reportedly advised Vikramaditya not to issue any further statement over the contentious issue. According to reports, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge was not at all impressed with Vikramaditya’s diktat.

The Congress minister had earlier posted on Facebook that the direction to the eateries was issued so that “people do not have any problem”.

India’s drug regulator has declared more than 50 drugs as "Not of Standard Quality (NSQ)” following a detailed quality test. Among others, calcium and vitamin D3 supplements, anti-diabetes pills and high blood pressure medicines have been labelled NSQ by the Central Drugs Standards Control Organisation (CDSCO). Additionally, the regulator has raised concerns over the quality of paracetamol tablets from Karnataka Antibiotics &amp; Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

CDSCO’s state drug officers conduct random quality checks on a monthly basis, based on which NSQ alerts are generated.

The drug regulator found that Vitamin C and D3 tablets Shelcal, vitamin B complex and vitamin C softgels, antiacid Pan-D, paracetamol tablets IP 500 mg, anti-diabetic drug Glimepiride, and high blood pressure drug Telmisartan are among 53 top-selling drugs that have failed in quality tests.

Paracetamol, Pan D, 51 other drugs fail quality tests by Indian drug regulator

Three railway employees have been arrested for allegedly conspiring to derail a train near Kim railway station by removing fishplates and keys from a railway track.

The attempted train derailment incident was thwarted on Saturday, the police said.

According to Western Railway, Vadodara Division unidentified people opened the fishplate and some keys from the UP line track and put them on the same track near the Kim railway station. However, service was soon restored.

In a separate incident, nine iron rods were recovered on the Bathinda-Delhi railway track, Government Railway Police (GRP) officials said on Monday.

Investigating Officer Shavinder Kumar, said that a train had to be stopped after multiple iron rods were seen on the Bathinda-Delhi railway tracks early Sunday morning. The rods were recovered at around 3:00 am.

According to railway police officials, as soon as the rods were found on the tracks, the railway officials removed them and an FIR was registered against unknown persons.

The bank staff warned her, preventing further loss. Following her complaint, Versova police registered a case of cheating against unknown individuals, and an investigation is underway.

In a similar case, a 33-year-old woman from Malad lost ₹2.45 lakh to a man she met on a dating app. The man, claiming to be a doctor from the UK, told her he was stuck at customs while visiting India. He assured her he would repay her once the issue was resolved.

Former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and Tala police station in-charge, Abhijit Mondal, were remanded in CBI custody till September 17 by a court in Sealdah on Sunday (Sep 15).&nbsp;

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) alleged in court that there "could be a bigger conspiracy" and that both Ghosh and Mondal played "vital roles" in the rape and murder case of a junior doctor at RG Kar.&nbsp;

A lawyer for CBI said that the agency had obtained call detail records (CDR) of the two on the night of the incident and probe suggested a possible nexus between the two.

"We want to confront both of them," said the CBI lawyer.

The CBI alleged that Mondal took an "unusually long time to arrive at the scene of the crime," even though it was "only a five-minute drive." According to the investigative agency, the Tala police station in-charge was "informed about the incident at 10.03 am but he reached the spot at 11 am."

Furthermore, the lawyer pointed out a "14-hour delay in registering an FIR," and also raised questions regarding the filing of a "general diary by the police, stating that the victim was lying unconscious".

"He was obligated to register the FIR. They tried to pass it off as a suicide. There was a clear dereliction of duty. Custodial interrogation of both individuals is necessary."

A nexus to hide the crime The CBI seeking three-day custody of the two men alleged that Ghosh and Mondal tried to "downplay" the horrific incident as well as "shield" the heinous crime and that the agency wanted to interrogate them "face-to-face". A lawyer for CBI said that the agency had obtained call detail records (CDR) of the two on the night of the incident and probe suggested a possible nexus between the two. "We want to confront both of them," said the CBI lawyer. Furthermore, the lawyer pointed out a "14-hour delay in registering an FIR," and also raised questions regarding the filing of a "general diary by the police, stating that the victim was lying unconscious". "He was obligated to register the FIR. They tried to pass it off as a suicide. There was a clear dereliction of duty. Custodial interrogation of both individuals is necessary." Dubbed 'Mission Mausam', this effort is being helmed by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), which aims to make India ‘Weather Ready’ and ‘Climate Smart’. Three institutes of the Ministry of Earth Sciences: the India Meteorological Department, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting will primarily implement Mission Mausam. The academia will be supported by their sister institutions from India's MoES, and their global counterparts. According to Dr M Ravichandran, secretary of MoES, the first phase of this long-term project would be about scaling up weather monitoring infrastructure. This involves setting up 50 Doppler Weather Radars (DWR), 60 Radio Sonde/Radio Wind (RS/RW) stations, 100 disdrometers (to measure rain rate, fall velocity, precipitation type, droplet size), 10 Wind Profilers, 25 radiometers, an Urban testbed, a Process testbed, an Ocean Research station and 10 Marine Automatic Weather Stations with upper air observation. He added that most of this hardware would be built by Indian industry, which means that the money spent for procuring the hardware would be pumped into the country's economy. Critical elements of Mission Mausam will include the deployment of next-generation radars and satellite systems with advanced sensors and high-performance supercomputers, the development of improved Earth system models and a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based automated Decision Support System for real-time data dissemination. Once these systems are operational, the overall quality and frequency of weather forecasts are expected to go up several notches. This is because the new hardware additions would help precisely monitor many more weather-related parameters than are being done currently. The forecasts derived from this modern equipment will immensely benefit agriculture, disaster management, defence, environment, aviation, water resources, power, tourism, shipping, transport, energy, and health. 'Weather is managing us; can we manage Weather'? Over the next five years, the MoES will set up dedicated facilities to simulate and better understand cloud formation, evolution and related phenomenon. In these specialised 'cloud chambers', teams will conduct several experiments to understand how weather can be 'managed' via scientific intervention. Elaborating on this, Dr Ravichandran said that there are possibilities of scientifically intensifying a certain weather phenomenon or reducing its intensity (suppressing it). He was referring to the process of cloud seeding, which is undertaken to generate extra rainfall, during a deficit, or to meet specific requirements. Conversely, when there is a risk of very high rainfall and flooding, scientific interventions can be brought about to suppress the rainfall. This is typically done to increase rain or snow, reduce hail, or disperse fog. However such methods are widely debated by the global scientific community and require a very cautious and calculated approach. Citing an example, he said that when there are a considerable amount of clouds over a drought-hit region, these clouds can be scientifically enhanced, so that the parched region can receive good rainfall. Likewise, the intense rain clouds headed for a flood-prone city can be suppressed. When queried about the possibility of creating scientifically induced rainfall to curb winter pollution and smog in Northern India, he said that clouds are a prerequisite to either enhance or suppress rainfall and that wintry months usually don't offer favourable cloud conditions for creating rainfall. The primary aim of MausamGPT would be to provide weather-related alerts to those using phones and other devices. For instance, when a farmer wishes to know the weather in his region for the next five days, he can dial a number on his mobile phone (need not be a smartphone), and over the call, he can get the information from an automated voice. Finally, a chemist &amp; druggist shop at Kalindi, north Kolkata, were raided after ED officials tracked several documents relating to business transactions with RG Kar authorities while Ghosh was at the helm of the hospital's affairs.

Manipur violence: Mobile internet, broadband suspended; curfew imposed after drone, rocket attacks

At least five people were killed in India’s Lucknow city on Saturday (Sep 7) after&nbsp;a three-storey building came crashing down in Transport Nagar. Lucknow is the capital city of the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. A total of 28 people were rescued by the authorities and many are still feared to be trapped under the debris.

A truck parked nearby was also crushed under the building. The collapse occurred at around 5:00&nbsp;pm IST. Officials said the building was being used as a godown. Local media reported that teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the fire department, the police and the revenue department were present on the site and carrying out search and rescue operations.&nbsp;

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the officials to help all those injured access treatment and monitor all developments.

The chief minister’s office in a statement said, “UP CM Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the incident of collapse of building in Transport Nagar, Lucknow. The Chief Minister has instructed the district administration officials, SDRF and NDRF teams to reach the spot and expedite the relief work and immediately take the injured to the hospital for proper treatment. He also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured."

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed his pain over the incident, saying he was in contact with the state authorities.

"The news of the accident caused by the collapse of a building in Lucknow is extremely painful. I have spoken to the District Magistrate of Lucknow over the phone and got information about the situation at the spot. The local administration is carrying out relief and rescue operations on the spot and is engaged in helping the victims in every possible way," the defence minister said.

A recent study by a US-based institute has determined that the Swachh Bharat Mission launched by the Narendra Modi government in India has helped in preventing around 60,000-70,000 infant deaths every year. The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, aimed&nbsp;to establish a link between increased access to toilets and the number of infant deaths between 2000 and 2020.

The International Food Policy Research Institute concluded by analysing data from nationally representative surveys covering 35 states/Union territories and more than 600 districts over 20 years.

PM Modi was quick to hail the report, saying he was “happy” that India had taken a lead in this.

The decision ends a practice dating back to 1937 that allowed Muslim lawmakers and staff to pause proceedings for Friday prayers.

"Since the creation of the Assam Legislative Assembly, the sitting of the Assembly on Friday used to be adjourned at 11 am to facilitate Muslim members to go for namaz. The assembly used to resume its proceedings in the post-lunch session after the Muslim members came back from the namaz. On all other days, the House used to conduct its proceedings without any such adjournment for religious purposes,"&nbsp;a press statement by the CM's office read.

The decision to remove the namaz break was unanimously agreed upon by all members of the Assembly, marking the end of the Friday break from 12:00 pm&nbsp;to 2:00 pm (local time).

Former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav criticised the move, telling reporters in Patna, “The Assam Chief Minister is doing this for cheap popularity. Who is he? He just wants cheap popularity. BJP has made Muslims a soft target.”

“They want to bother Muslims in some way or the other and spread hatred in the society. BJP should understand that even Muslims had sacrificed their lives in the freedom struggle,” the RJD leader added.

Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar also voiced his concerns, stating, "This has been a tradition and a trend that the House followed for decades. They decided to change it but was there a broader consultation? They have to explain why this decision was taken."
