Five dead as three-storey building collapses in India’s Lucknow, 28 rescued

Three-storey building collapses in Lucknow

At least five people were killed in India’s Lucknow city on Saturday (Sep 7) aftera three-storey building came crashing down in Transport Nagar. Lucknow is the capital city of the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. A total of 28 people were rescued by the authorities and many are still feared to be trapped under the debris.

A truck parked nearby was also crushed under the building. The collapse occurred at around 5:00pm IST. Officials said the building was being used as a godown. Local media reported that teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the fire department, the police and the revenue department were present on the site and carrying out search and rescue operations.

It was not clear what caused the building to collapse.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the officials to help all those injured access treatment and monitor all developments.

The chief minister’s office in a statement said, “UP CM Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the incident of collapse of building in Transport Nagar, Lucknow. The Chief Minister has instructed the district administration officials, SDRF and NDRF teams to reach the spot and expedite the relief work and immediately take the injured to the hospital for proper treatment. He also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured."

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed his pain over the incident, saying he was in contact with the state authorities.

"The news of the accident caused by the collapse of a building in Lucknow is extremely painful. I have spoken to the District Magistrate of Lucknow over the phone and got information about the situation at the spot. The local administration is carrying out relief and rescue operations on the spot and is engaged in helping the victims in every possible way," the defence minister said.
