The Supreme Court on Thursday (August 29) criticised Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for his comments on grant of bail to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha in the Delhi liquor policy case, suggesting that it was due to a "deal" between ex-chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's party and the ruling BJP.

The court said that these comments could harm court's image in public eye&nbsp;and raise doubts. A three-judge bench, led by Justice B R Gavai, comprising Justices P K Mishra and K V Viswanathan, asked Reddy's lawyer, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, “Have you seen what he said in the newspapers? What kind of statement is this from a responsible chief minister? Such remarks might rightly create apprehension among the people. Is this how a constitutional official should speak?”

The bench added, “Why should political rivalries involve the court? Do we issue orders based on consultations with political parties? We are not concerned with political criticism of our decisions. We act according to our conscience and oath.”

The judges said, “We have always stated that we do not interfere in legislative matters, and we expect the same from others. Do we issue orders based on political considerations?”

The Supreme Court was considering a petition to transfer the trial of the 2015 cash-for-vote scam case, where Reddy is an accused, from Telangana to Bhopal.

Reddy had suggested there were suspicions about why MLC Kavitha was granted bail within five months, while Manish Sisodia got reprieve in 15 months and Arvind Kejriwal is still awaiting bail. Reddy told reporters, “It is evident that BRS supported BJP’s victory in the 2024 LS elections. There are also claims that Kavitha’s bail resulted from a deal between BRS and BJP.”

K Kavitha, daughter of ex-Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Wednesday (August 28).

“Investigation is complete and charge sheet has been filed. The custody of the appellant (Kavitha) is not necessary. She has been behind bars for five months. The likelihood of trial being concluded in near future is impossible. As said in various pronouncements of this court, under-trial custody should not turn into a punishment,” the bench said in its order.

It is as if the nation has been awakened after one of its doctors was brutalised by Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the case that continues to get murkier every day.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
Even though our feeds, newspapers, and television screens are full of protest visuals with people screaming for accountability, there have been multiple other sexual violence incidents against women historically from the ‘disadvantaged’ groups since August 9.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
A man allegedly sexually abused two four-year-olds at a private school in Maharashtra’s Badlapur. In another incident a&nbsp;man allegedly raped a friend’s three-year-old daughter in Valsad. While a&nbsp;shopkeeper from North India’s Meerut was arrested for allegedly raping six young boys.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
We are all familiar with the hush-hush stories of sexual violence in our families and communities. Most stories never see the light of day. 
&nbsp; 
The cases are countless, and the list from just the last few days is enough to overwhelm all of us.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
It appears that we have learnt nothing after decades of sexual violence and brutality running rampant. Even the Indian President, Droupadi Murmu, has said ‘Enough is enough’ and asked society to stop the horrors.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
But when we don’t listen to our conscience, will we listen to our president?&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
The case so far

August 9: The victim’s body is found inside the seminar hall of the RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. After initially telling the victim’s parents of an ‘alleged suicide,’ the police register an FIR (First Information Report).&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
August 10: Sanjay Roy, the prime accused, is arrested in connection with allegedly raping and murdering the trainee doctor after a ‘prolonged examination and confession of guilt.’ Protests erupt over the administration’s response to the case after reports of a cover-up quickly spread.&nbsp;

&nbsp; 
‘Why was she wearing short clothes?’&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
‘Girls should be careful too.’ 
&nbsp; 
The onus of sexual violence is not on its victim but is symptomatic of a greater disease pervading society. One which objectifies the woman and sees her as a means to the patriarchal end, i.e., the man’s sexual release, consent be damned! 
&nbsp; 
Not safe even after death 
&nbsp; 
In a shocking turn of events, the Kolkata rape and murder victim was not left in peace even after her brutal death. Her name is trending widely on social media, often by people demanding justice. But in a far more sinister turn of events, her name became the top search trend on various pornography websites. The victim’s morphed images were quick to be circulated in chatrooms frequented by men, with many commenting on her physicality. As if this was not sickening enough, the men of India proceeded to slut-shame not just the victim but compare her to their partners.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
This is beyond horrifying.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
Consider this: a man allegedly rapes a woman, brutally murders her, dumps her body to be found later, shows no apparent remorse for his acts, and instead of outrage, his fellow men are laughing off the incident and proceeding to look for pornography related to the incident.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
It is no longer about our “mothers, sisters, and daughters.” As a colleague aptly noted a quote from Bachi Karkaria’s column in the Times of India, 'women are just women, not male appendages.'

The onus is always on the victim, in this case a woman, not the accused.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
If we talk about how a man brutally raped and murdered a woman in Kolkata’ or how ‘the accused brutalised the victim’ we will be easing the pressure off women to prove their assault and place it on the accused, as it should be.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
If we were all a little more empathetic about how we talk about sexual violence, maybe it would not have taken so long for Malayalam cinema’s #MeToo movement to kickstart.&nbsp;

Demand for collective action&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
The call for stricter rape laws in the country has been an old one. Much before West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress demanded stricter rape laws and conviction rates in the country, activists have been demanding harsher laws against sexual perpetrators and quick dispensation of justice. 
&nbsp; 
The repeated and long-drawn procedure of a rape trial is often taxing on both the survivor and their family, fuelling suspicion and a greater possibility of the court of public opinion to step in. The honourable courts’ wisdom must prevail regardless of public sentiment.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
Time to act has passed 
 
The time to act against sexual violence has passed long ago in India. It has now become the status quo. It is considered a default that women must protect themselves from men and that men will continue to assault them. A woman living in practically any part of the country is no longer safe, let alone other gender and sexual minorities. Women, men, children, and even animals are being raped with their autonomy brutally snatched by both the perpetrators and the court of public opinion. 
&nbsp; 
We as a society have missed the bus of gender equality so long ago that all women can do now is walk down the never-ending road to apparent justice, all alone.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
But wait, women cannot be ‘allowed’ to walk alone, right? What if they ‘tempt’ men into becoming monsters?&nbsp;

Kolkata rape-murder: RG Kar Hospital crime is a symptom of India’s collective shame

Earlier, Indian President Murmu also spoke about the incident and issued a rare condemnation.&nbsp;President Droupadi Murmu said, “Enough is enough”, as she highlighted the urgent need to step up societal overhaul to stop such crimes in future.

An Indian-origin doctor was shot in the US in Tuscaloosa, a city in Alabama, on Friday (Aug&nbsp;23). The victim, identified as Dr Ramesh Babu Peramsetty, died on the spot. He was a renowned physician who operated several hospitals in America.

Dr Ramesh, who was from Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati district, was one of the founders and medical director of a group of local medical officers operating as the Crimson Network. He was known for his contributions to the field of healthcare and also practised as a physician in Tuscaloosa.

"As many are aware at this moment, we have been informed of Dr. Ramesh Peramsetty's passing. The Peramsetty family ask for us to give them privacy as they grieve his passing. They have received abundant outpouring of love and faith. We will continue to honour him as he would want us to do. Samuel, a daily wager, was badly beaten and died on the spot. The family buried him the next day, police said. Two days after the incident, Samuel's mother and his wife filed a complaint against the pastor.

After the incident came to its notice through a voluntary report submitted by the airline on July 10, the regulator investigated the operations of the carrier, including examination of documentation and spot check of the scheduling facility.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The reply submitted by the concerned entities failed to provide satisfactory justification. As such, DGCA has initiated enforcement action in terms of provisions of the extant rules/ regulations and imposed the above penalty, the watchdog noted.

For the violations, DGCA has imposed a fine of ₹90 lakh on Air India, ₹6 lakh on the airline's Director of Operations and ₹3 lakh on the carrier's Director of Training.

A dental student has accused a doctor at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak of assaulting her, police said on Monday.

The police said the accused has been arrested after a case was registered.

The incident comes at a time when there is countrywide outrage against the brutal rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor in hospital premises.

Rohtak Police said an incident of assault on&nbsp;a BDS student at the PGIMS Rohtak campus was brought to their notice on Saturday night by PGIMS authorities, and acting swiftly on the information, senior police officers reached the medical institute and contacted the victim and her family.

In her complaint, the woman student alleged that on August 16, the accused kidnapped her from PGIMS, took her to Ambala and Chandigarh, and tortured and beat her, said police.

Police said an FIR was registered, and the accused was immediately arrested. The victim has been medically examined, and her statement has also been recorded before a judicial magistrate, they said.

Rohtak police said no evidence of sexual harassment has yet come to the fore in the girl's statement or during the investigation.

The accused doctor teaches anatomy at the medical college.

In a video, which she uploaded on social media, the victim showed injury marks as a result of the alleged assault.

She stated that she was a first-year student of BDS and alleged that she was tortured by the accused for seven months.

"He beats me, tortures me whenever I tell him that I don't want to be with him. He threatens that he will not mark my attendance in lectures and won't allow me to sit in exams," the woman student alleged in the video.

The accused is being interrogated thoroughly. An investigation is being done keeping every aspect in mind, Rohtak Deputy Superintendent of Police Virender Singh said in a statement.

He said that the BDS student complained about the assault on Saturday night.

"The police team and senior officers of PGIMS immediately reached the spot. The police immediately took cognisance of the matter, and an FIR was registered against the accused," he said.

India's premier investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Monday (August 19) obtained court permission to conduct a lie detector test of the main accused in the heinous rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata.

As per reports, the permission to put Sanjay Roy through a polygraph test has been granted by the Kolkata High Court.&nbsp;

The development comes a day after the Supreme Court of India had stepped in, taking suo moto cognisance of the matter on Sunday (August 18).&nbsp;A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the matter on Tuesday (August 20).

<h2>Who is the rape-murder accused Sanjay Roy?</h2>

On August 9, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. A preliminary autopsy of her body suggested that the trainee doctor was subjected to violent sexual assault.

Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested by the Kolkata Police in connection with the case.&nbsp;

A preliminary investigation into the matter revealed that Roy, at the time of the crime, had consumed alcohol. Citing sources, India Today reported that Sanjay went to a place behind the hospital to drink alcohol and that he used to watch porn while drinking.

<h2>CBI investigation continues</h2>

On&nbsp;Tuesday (Aug&nbsp;13), a bench of the Calcutta High Court&nbsp;observed that there had been no significant progress in investigations made by the Kolkata Police in five days since the tragic incident. Expressing its dissatisfaction, the court&nbsp;ordered the transfer of the probe into the alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor to&nbsp;India's central investigative agency, the CBI.&nbsp;

Since then, the CBI has interrogated multiple doctors of&nbsp;R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the R G Kar hospital has been grilled by the investigative agency for four consecutive days.

Meanwhile, in an interesting twist to the case, Senior Trinamool Congress leader&nbsp;Kunal Ghosh has reportedly submitted to the CBI documents related to the corruption of Dr Sandip Ghosh.

The TMC leader claimed that junior doctors of the hospital have supplied all the information and documents related to Sandip Ghosh's corruption. He also said that if CBI finds these documents necessary, the doctors will be happy to cooperate with the agency.

"I have handed over to CBI all the documents given to me by the doctors of RG Kar Hospital...If before 23rd August a breakthrough is reached, then it is better as the arrested accused is presented before the court on that day, then the remand copy will indicate he was the lone culprit or not," said Ghosh.

The posts disclosed the picture and identity of the victim, which is highly offensive in nature," Kolkata police's official statement read. "Additionally, the accused shared two stories containing offensive comments and life threats against the Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal. These comments are provocative and may create social unrest and promote hatred among communities," it added. On August 9, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. The initial autopsy revealed evidence of violent sexual assault. This incident triggered nationwide protests, with civil societies and doctors across various states demanding strict punishment for those responsible and calling for enhanced safety and security measures. The accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested by Kolkata Police in connection with the case, but this action did little to suppress public outrage. (With inputs from agencies)
