On Friday, forty teams scoured six zones affected by the landslides: Attamala and Aaranmala (first zone), Mundakkai (second), Punchirimattam (third), Vellarimala village (fourth), GVHSS Vellarimala (fifth), and the riverbank (sixth).

The teams involved included members from the army, NDRF, DSG, Coast Guard, Navy, and MEG, along with three locals and one employee from the forest department.

Following his visit to the affected regions, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, described the Wayanad landslides as a “tragedy of unprecedented scale” for the state and stressed the need for a swift and special response.

On Saturday, the Kerala government announced plans to build a new township in a safe location to house those displaced by the devastating landslide in the Mundakkai area of Wayanad district.

As search and rescue efforts continue in landslide-stricken Wayanad, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor emphasised the need for a robust policy on disaster response and mitigation on Saturday. He stressed that the Indian government must provide long-term support to help those affected by the natural disaster.

Tharoor told ANI, "Food and so on, is plentifully available in Wayanad but we were able to bring some mattresses, soft, spongy things that you can spread out on the floor and lie on to help people. But all of these are just urgent, immediate responses."

Then we have to build homes for them for the longer term,"&nbsp;Tharoor said.

On Saturday, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced&nbsp;that his government will build 100 homes for those affected by the landslides in Wayanad.

"I have assured CM Shri @pinarayivijayan of our support and announced that Karnataka will construct 100 houses for the victims. Together, we will rebuild and restore hope," he said.&nbsp;

"Your commitment to building 100 houses for the victims of the tragic landslide is a significant step towards rehabilitation efforts. The compassion and solidarity of Indians are the strengths that Wayanad needs right now," he added.

Officers had to tie ropes to trees and rocks to navigate, which he described as hazardous. He added, “The children were tired, and we fed them with whatever we had carried. Later, after much persuasion, their father agreed to come with us, and we tied the children to our bodies and started our trek back." On Tuesday, landslides in the Wayanad district caused major damage to roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure, leaving people stuck in affected areas. Heavy rain led to waterlogging on the runway of&nbsp;Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in the Indian city of&nbsp;Kolkata, West Bengal.&nbsp;The downpour, driven by a low-pressure area turning into a deep depression, affected Kolkata&nbsp;and nearby districts on Saturday (Aug 3).

The rainfall caused flooding in various areas including Kolkata, Howrah, Salt Lake, and Barrackpore. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), this situation is expected to last through the day.

Police noted ankle-deep water in central and southern parts of Kolkata, though traffic remained unaffected. Some regions received up to seven&nbsp;centimetres&nbsp;of rain since Friday afternoon.

"The low pressure over Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal turned into a deep depression, moving towards Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. This, along with an active monsoon trough over southern West Bengal, caused the rains," a local&nbsp;official said.

Indian opposition parties have launched a renewed campaign against the proposed&nbsp;Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, calling it "a direct threat” to freedom of speech. The matter was brought to public attention by&nbsp;Trinamool Congress'&nbsp;Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar, who claimed a revised version of the bill was being circulated among business holders and stakeholders and the Parliament was being kept in the dark.&nbsp;

Notably, the first draft of the bill was released last year, which came under intense criticism from the opposition parties.

"The&nbsp;Modi government suppresses truth from Parliament — but shares information with business houses and 'stakeholders'," the TMC MP wrote in a post on X.

"The government has revised the Broadcasting Bill and has circulated it secretly -- yet it refuses to say this. It avoids the rest of the question -- as no democratic country has such a draconian law," Sircar further wrote.

His criticism came after&nbsp;Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw claimed in Parliament that the bill was still being drafted.

It's been reported that the new bill will empower the government to define&nbsp;Instagram influencers and Youtubers as&nbsp;"digital news broadcasters".

The content creators will reportedly have to notify the government about their presence within a month of the law's enactment.

Lt Gen Nair graduated from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, with a distinguished academic record and was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps in December 1985, according to a statement issued by the defence ministry.

She assumed the office of the Director General Medical Services (Army) on Thursday, it said.

“Prior to this, she was the first woman to hold the post of DG Hospital Services (Armed Forces) on promotion to the rank of Air Marshal,” it said.

Lt Gen Nair has become the first woman to be appointed as the Director General Medical Services (Army), the ministry said.

She holds a post-graduate degree in family medicine, diplomas in maternal and child health and healthcare management, and has undergone a two-year training programme in medical informatics at AIIMS, New Delhi, the statement said.

Justice Mayank Kumar Jain, who reserved the judgement on June 6, has now ruled in the plaintiff's favour and the court will resume hearing on August 12. Pronouncing the verdict in open court, Justice Jain while reading the operative part of the judgment said, that the suits of the Hindu worshippers and the deity are not barred under the Limitation Act or Places Of Worship Act, etc. The Court rejected the primary argument made by the Committee of Management Trust Shahi Masjid Idgah (Mathura) that the suits pending before the high court are barred by the Places of Worship Act 1991, Limitation Act 1963, and Specific Relief Act 1963. The Hindu plaintiffs had argued that there is no property in Shahi Idgah's name in government records, and the same is occupied illegally. They also argued that if it is a Waqf property, then the Waqf Board should tell who donated the disputed property. Hindu plaintiffs have filed several lawsuits demanding the demolition of the Shahi Idgah mosque from the 13.37-acre complex it shares with the Katra Keshav Dev temple in Mathura, arguing that the former was constructed on the location of the destroyed Krishna Janmabhoomi temple in Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb's era. The mosque management committee and the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board argued that the lawsuits were not allowed under the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991. This law prevents changing the religious nature of any worship place as it was on Independence Day. 'If Shahi Eidgah Masjid approaches SC, we will be present there' Vishnu Shankar Jain, the attorney representing the Hindu plaintiffs, stated that they are ready if the Shahi Idgah mosque committee decides to appeal to the Supreme Court. Have they lost it?," wondered the Delhi High Court on Wednesday, while castigating the police for a "strange" probe by arresting an SUV driver for his alleged role in the drowning of three civil services aspirants at a coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar area in the national capital.

The strong words of the high court, however, did not come to the rescue of jailed SUV driver whose bail plea was dismissed by a magisterial court later in the day.

Judicial Magistrate Vinod Kumar rejected the bail plea of five accused, including SUV driver Manuj Kathuria, who was termed a "masti-khor" (fun lover) by the Delhi Police in their vehement opposition to his bail plea.

In the high court, a bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said a "strange probe" was going on with the Delhi Police taking action against a man who drove a car outside the coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar here but not acting against the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials.

"What is the Delhi Police doing? Have they lost it? What are its officials who are monitoring the probe doing? This is a cover-up or what?" the court said.

The bench said the police have arrested a bystander or some person who was driving the car over there. It asked whether some official (of MCD) has been held accountable for the incident till now.

"We are telling you, once the responsibility is fixed on officials, no such incident will ever happen in future," the bench said.

The high court was hearing a plea by an organisation, Kutumb, seeking the constitution of a high-level committee to investigate the deaths of the three civil service aspirants on the evening of July 27.

During the hearing, the bench allowed an oral prayer of the petitioner's advocate Rudra Vikram Singh to implead Delhi Police as a party to the petition.

"Where is the police? Who is investigating this matter? They are trying to get hold of any passerby or driver and saying this happened because you drove a car."

"Has any official been caught or interrogated? Have they interrogated the official who has not de-silted this drain? Was the drain de-silted properly and in time?,” the court asked and said, "Some sort of very strange investigation is going on."

The court hinted at asking a central agency to probe the incident and directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) commissioner, deputy commissioner of police concerned and the investigating officer (IO) of the case to appear before it on Friday.

The counsel for the Delhi government said he would take instructions from IO on the status of investigation and on the queries raised by the court and apprise it on Friday.

Kathuria has been accused of driving his Force Gurkha car through the street that was flooded by rainwater, causing the water to swell and breach the gates of the three-storey building, where Rau's IAS Study Circle was being run, and inundate the basement.

The police have registered an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 105 (culpable homicide), 106(1) (death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide), 115(2) (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 290 (negligent conduct with respect to pulling down, repairing or constructing buildings).&nbsp;

The incident took place&nbsp;at around 12:30 am (local time)&nbsp;last Friday (July 26). A case of accidental death has been filed at the Ravet police station.

The boy, who was a&nbsp;Class 10th student in Pune, was doing well academically. He lived with his mother in a residential society in Kiwale.

Shah said that a similar warning was given to the Gujarat government three days before the cyclone, and because they took timely action, no lives were lost.

"The Narendra Modi government is standing like a rock with the Kerala government and the people to deal with the Wayanad tragedy," Shah said.

"There was no vigil on the part of security staff as a result water uninterruptedly crossed the parking area and entered into the basement ultimately taking the precious life of three bright children,” the report said.

The report from the Delhi Chief Secretary stated that the Assistant Engineer (M-1)/KBZ, who was in charge of the drainage system in the area, had been suspended right away. Additionally, the Junior Engineer (M-1)/KBZ has been dismissed from service.

The chief secretary's report claimed that the stretch from Shankar Road to Pusa Road is shaped like a saucer, with the lowest point located in front of Rau's Coaching Institute. “During peak rains, water accumulates in this stretch of 200 feet and whenever vehicles pass through this stretch there is a huge splash of water which aggravates the situation,” the report said.&nbsp;

“The water which was supposed to enter into the stormwater drain and then to barrel, pushes towards the parking area,” the report added.&nbsp;

"The opening in the shape of a manhole over the drainage system has also been covered with finishing items, thus leaving no scope for cleaning of the drains,” the report added.

The Centre has formed a panel to investigate the deaths of Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nevin Dalwin from Kerala, who drowned in the flooded basement of the coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar.

"MHA has constituted a committee to inquire into the unfortunate incident at a coaching centre in old Rajinder Nagar in New Delhi. The committee will inquire into the reasons, fix responsibility, suggest measures and recommend policy changes," the MHA spokesperson posted on X.

"The committee will have Additional Secretary, MoUHA, Principal Secretary (Home), Delhi Govt, Special CP, Delhi Police, Fire Advisor and JS, MHA as Convener. It will submit its report in 30 days," the post said.

"Wayanad landslide: Indian Army column reached the landslide site at Chooralmala by 1200 hours. Using ropes, soldiers are being ferried across the river which is in spate to assist and carry out rescue efforts in Ward No 10 of Chooralmala," Indian Army officials said.
