The Pune Police told a Maharashtra court on Thursday (July 18) that Manorama Khedkar, the mother of IAS probationer Puja Khedkar, had put a gun to the complainant’s head and was about to pull the trigger. The complainant ducked in fear while others restrained Manorama, the prosecutor said, according to PTI.

The police are seeking five days&nbsp;custody for Manorama in connection with a land dispute. Manorama, her husband Dilip Khedkar, and three others, all named in the FIR, are described as “influential and politically active” individuals. The court in Paud remanded her in police custody until July 20.

Earlier that day, Pune Rural Police detained Manorama from a lodge in Mahad, Raigad district, and brought her to the Paud Police station before arresting her, said Pankaj Deshmukh, Superintendent of Police, Pune Rural.

A farmer from Dhadwali, Pandharinath Pasalkar, 65, filed the FIR against Manorama Khedkar, Diliprao Khedkar, and several unidentified individuals under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act. The police also added IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) against Manorama.

The incident stems from a land dispute in Dhadwali village, Mulshi tehsil, where Manorama allegedly threatened Pasalkar with a gun on June 4, 2023. A video of the incident surfaced, prompting the police to search for Manorama and Dilip Khedkar.

Police claim Manorama has not cooperated with investigators and has not provided information about her husband and the other accused, nor details about the pistol and the vehicle used.

The police argue that they need her custodial interrogation to confiscate the weapon and trace the other accused. Defense counsel Nikhil Malani opposed the request for police custody, noting that Manorama had previously filed a case against the complainant, resulting in a chargesheet.

“The present complainant was on the backfoot due to the case filed against him. But after a video went viral, he came forward and filed a case against my client,” Malani said.

He also argued that the police had added the non-bailable Section 307 (attempt to murder) to the FIR abruptly on July 17, leading to Manorama's arrest. He claimed the case was an “afterthought” as it was registered 13 months after the incident.

After hearing both sides, the court remanded Manorama in police custody until July 20.

Pune police reveal details of gun threat by IAS officer Puja Khedkar's mother Manorama Khedkar in court

Chief Minister of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath has directed all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners throughout the state. The Kanwar Yatra is set to commence on July 22.

This order comes after the Uttar Pradesh police in Muzaffarnagar amended their directive, making it optional for eateries to display owners’ names, following criticism from opposition parties.

To ensure the Kanwar Yatra proceeds smoothly, Adityanath instructed that food and beverage shops along the Kanwar routes must show the name and identity of the operator/owner to uphold the pilgrims’ faith. Additionally, action will be taken against those selling halal-certified products, ANI reported.

As per the new rule, all food establishments, including restaurants, roadside dhabas, and food carts, must now display their owner's name.

Uttar Pradesh Minister Kapil Dev Agarwal recently claimed that some Muslims are disguising themselves under Hindu names to sell non-vegetarian food to pilgrims. He mentioned that names like "Vaishno Dhaba Bhandar," "Shakumbhari Devi Bhojanalaya," and "Shuddh Bhojanalaya" are being used to sell non-vegetarian items.

The Muzaffarnagar Police had earlier requested that eateries along the Kanwar route “voluntarily display” the names of their owners and staff. They emphasised that this measure is intended solely to assist devotees and is not meant to foster any “religious discrimination.”

Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand Police has instructed that eateries along the Kanwar Yatra routes display the owners' names on their boards.

Former Samajwadi Party MP Dr ST Hasan criticised this directive, stating, “…A message is being sent to boycott Muslim-owned businesses and support those owned by Hindus… How long will this communal mindset continue? Unfortunately, such incidents are increasing… This is creating a divide between the communities. These orders should be revoked…”

UP state Congress chief Ajay Rai remarked, “This is completely impractical. It undermines the spirit of unity in society and aims to create rifts among people. This should be reversed immediately…”

Earlier on Thursday, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav described the order as a “social crime” and urged the court to intervene, raising concerns about the motives behind the government's actions.

“What can be learned from names like Guddu, Munna, Chhotu, or Fateh? The esteemed court should initiate suo-motu proceedings to probe the government's intentions and impose suitable penalties. Such orders are social crimes aimed at disrupting the peaceful atmosphere of harmony,” he said&nbsp;in a post on X.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has been directed by the Supreme Court to publish the NEET-UG 24 test results on its website city-wise and centre-wise by 12 pm on Saturday without&nbsp;disclosing the candidates' names.&nbsp;On Thursday (July 18), the Supreme Court of India began hearing several petitions concerning the NEET-UG 2024 exam row. The petitions were considered on Thursday by a three-judge bench comprising CJI D Y Chandrachud, Justices J B Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra.

As proceedings began, CJI asked the attorney for the cancellation of the exam to prove if the leak was systemic. He said, "You have to show us that the leak was so systemic and affected the entire examination to warrant the cancellation of the entire exam."

The judges heard over 40 petitions, including pleas filed by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and several students who appeared for the examination. The NTA seeks a transfer of all the cases against it pending in many High Courts regarding the NEET-UG controversy, PTI reported.

During the hearing, senior advocate Narendra Hooda, representing the petitioner, called for the results of all students to be declared to bring in some transparency.

The NEET-UG exam was held on May 5 and nearly 24 lakh aspiring medical professionals had appeared in it.

The results were published last month but students could only access their individual scores.

A reevaluation and reversal of the decision are also sought, considering the alleged paper leak and other irregularities.

The court hearing also addressed the issue of 61 students scoring a perfect 720 out of 720 marks in the examination, even after the scores were adjusted.

The discussion centred on the physics question, alleging that it had two correct answers. The NTA counsel explained that 44 out of these 61 students received marks based on an additional answer found in an older NCERT booklet.

The CJI D Y Chandrachud said, "As the matter stands now, 61 students get 720/720, out of whom 44 are students who got extra marks for the two correct options for a question. So the number really is 17."&nbsp;

The CJI D Y Chandrachud said, "As the matter stands now, 61 students get 720/720, out of whom 44 are students who got extra marks for the two correct options for a question. So the number really is 17." (With inputs from agencies)

The Finance Minister ceremoniously stirs the 'kadhai' and serves the halwa to everyone involved in the Budget-making process. This tradition is also a way to acknowledge the hard work of all the finance ministry officials.&nbsp;

The budget session of parliament will begin on July 22 and, according to schedule, will end on August 12.

With this upcoming Budget Presentation, Sitharaman will surpass the record set by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, who presented five annual budgets and one interim budget between 1959 and 1964 as finance minister. Sitharaman's upcoming Budget speech would be her sixth.

Like the previous few full Union Budgets, the Budget 2024 will also be delivered in paperless form. An Interim Union Budget 2024 was presented on February 1, as the country was due for general elections. The interim budget, tabled on February 1, took care of the financial needs of the intervening period until a government was formed after the Lok Sabha polls, after which a full budget was supposed to be presented by the new government in July.

All the Union Budget documents, including the Annual Financial Statement (commonly known as Budget), Demand for Grants (DG), Finance Bill, as prescribed by the Constitution, will be available on the "Union Budget Mobile App" for hassle-free access of budget documents by Members of Parliament (MPs) and people. The app is bilingual (English and Hindi) and is available on both Android and iOS platforms. The App can also be downloaded from the Union Budget Web Portal (www.indiabudget.gov.in).

The Navy has 2 aircraft carriers with Mig-29K fighters carrying K-35 air-to-surface missiles and rockets. It operates KA-31 AEW and the newly inducted MH-60R Sea Hawk attack helicopters from Lockheed (12 of 26 arrived), 12 destroyers, and 12 frigates, all with powerful missiles, 13 landing platforms, a home-built nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine and 16 conventionally powered attack submarines, 18 corvettes, 3 fleet tankers as well as 28 auxiliary support vessels.

Around fifty-five large and small ships are on order in Indian Shipyards, including three support ships at Hindustan Shipyard Ltd and two Krivacks in Russia at Yantar in Russia.&nbsp;Due to the Russo-Ukraine war, Russian supplies have slowed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

All Indian Navy ships are equipped to handle diverse maritime challenges, provide humanitarian aid, hunt pirates and attackers at sea and have a modicum of nuclear deterrence from the sea. The Navy adheres to a Maritime Capability Perspective Plan (MCPP) and has built world-class 500 km anti-ship cum surface Brahmos and 60 km Barak AA missiles and fitted them on front-line ships.

It has fitted the underwater 650 km K-15/BO-05 nuclear-capable missiles in the home-built nuclear submarines INS Arihant and INS Arighat, which await commissioning.

The nuclear-capable 3000 km K-4 has been tested from an underwater launcher. All of the Navy's airborne, surface, and subsurface platforms are networked over a common data link using multiple means of communication, including Rukmini.&nbsp;

The Navy has around 220 aircraft, including 40 Mig-29Ks and 12 P8i Boeings operating from INS Hansa at Goa and from a Southern Air Station and Heron and Searcher drones, including 2 MQ-Guardians drones on lease from General Atomics.

The Guardians operated on the Indo-China border in 2020. An order for 26 Rafale-M fighters for the two aircraft carriers has been placed on Dassault; 12 out of 26 MH-60R multi-role helicopters from Lockheed with Kongsberg naval missiles and Mk 58 torpedoes have arrived for induction, replacing the Soakings MK 42B.&nbsp;

The IN is unique because its pedigree is from the Royal Navy, founded as the Royal Indian Navy (RIN) on 2nd October 1934. The RIN took part in WWII with distinction, lauded by C-in-C Lord Louis Mountbatten.

In 1950, India became a Republic and dropped the prefix Royal. In the 1960s, the IN deputed around 3000 officers and sailors to the United Kingdom's shipyards to commission the 28,000-ton aircraft carrier INS Vikrant (1961) with Seahawks and Alizes, and they brought back eight new potent frigates.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After being shunned by the West, India had to forcibly turn to the Soviet Union for warships, submarines, aircraft and helicopters, and large cadres went to the Soviet Union to bring back ships, submarines and planes.

Many were trained in specialist schools and imbibed the best operational features of the Soviet Navy that paid dividends in the 1971 war and heralded Missile Warfare from the Seas. IN's Osa class boats ingeniously struck PN ships off Karachi in the opening bell of that war.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the IN turned to the USA to gain technology and acquire equipment. At the same time, the Government continued to balance Russia and the USA in a cold war developing situation.&nbsp;

The IN is also unique as the IN learnt to operate the Combined Enterprise Regional Information Exchange (CENTRIX) satellite systems loaned by the US Navy to IN ships in the Malabar exercises and then operated the ISRO-supplied GSAT 7 satellite with an Israel-supplied antenna for net-centric warfare.&nbsp; IN's forte is its deep training, and men and women of calibre, man ships fly aircraft and man submarines.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hence, it can be said that the Navy, called "India's Cinderella Service", has emerged from its chrysalis, pulled itself up by its bootstraps and gotten its act together. IN is the envy of many Navies, as seen in exercises like Malabar with the US, Japanese and Australian QUAD navies, RIMPAC with multiple navies, Garuda with the French Navy and Konkan with the Royal Navy and the Russian Navy.

The Indian Navy is India's maritime instrument, and it can play the right hand with the Indian Air Force's sea-going assets in a Sea-Air Battle Strategy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

With better economic conditions in the last decade, the Indian Navy's capabilities have grown under the audacious and determined leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who realises the geo-strategic importance of the seas around us.

With the efforts of the Navy and DRDO, ample shipbuilding steel is now available locally to Indian shipbuilders, and the timeline of shipbuilding has been reduced. All front-line ships have advanced world-class radars and advanced technology, like the Multi-Function M/F ELM 2248 Star radar from Elta (Israel).&nbsp;&nbsp;

The M/F STAR radar is reported to deliver better-quality situation plots and weapon support than the US Aegis system. The Navy's 40,000-ton aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) that flies Mig 29K with K-35 missiles, has the Selex RAN 40L, which is an L band search radar developed by Leonardo. The radar provides long-range maritime air surveillance and early warning, and it is a solid-state active phased array radar.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 2020, Spain's new Indira radar factory tied up with&nbsp; TATA Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) to install&nbsp; 23 Lanza-N solid-state, up-mast radars specifically tailored for small target detection and weapon direction. Terma of Denmark tied up with Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) and supplies Scanter navigation radars.

The front-line warships have the Long Range 500km Brahmos missiles (the fastest one-kill in the world) and 60 km Barak air attack missiles, both made in India and many systems like Garpun B and P-20 missiles and radars from Russia have been replaced by these Indian systems.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The fast-firing AK630 guns fitted on ships are made in India. The Indian Navy can confront any adversary threatening India and its naval supremacy in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Creativity aside, the IN has grown in stature.

The 12 Maritime Reconnaissance Boeing 737 P8I have state-of-the-art APS multi-mode air APS radars, ECM sensors, a sonobuoys panel for submarine detection, and an air direction radar to guide powerful MK 54 Harpoon missiles and Torpedoes MK 58.

The Navy has to be congratulated on producing hardware in India and selecting systems from abroad. Make in India has been its policy since its inception, and it is now Atmanirbhar.&nbsp;

The Navy is also the Net Security Provider (NSP) in Mission Sagar (Security and Growth for All in the Region) that PM Modi coined, and the Navy has contributed much to the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) states with platforms, training and exercises.

The Navy's Information Fusion Centre (IFC-IOR) in Gurgaon near Delhi maintains a 24x7 plot of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) with the Action Information (AIS) responses from ships, intelligence, Janes and other inputs for Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA)and shares it with friendly nations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

An oceanic plot is an inescapable tool for operational and war planning and Search and Rescue (SAR) Operations via the Internet in real-time. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Navy ships joined Mission 'Vande Bharat' (the evacuation of Indian citizens from Indian Ocean Island nations by air and sea).&nbsp;

Support to IN is provided from its bases and shipyards in the government and private sectors. Mumbai and Vizag bases are being augmented by bases at Karwar and Varsha (mainly for nuclear submarines) on the East Coast.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Much of this is due to the Navy's belief in a compact size, intensive training, buying the best available systems and unambivalent decision-making. It has the distinction of being the only service with an unclassified doctrine and an ambitious maritime strategy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh have propelled India to the world stage by fleet ships to spend more time abroad and provide training to around 15 friendly Navies. Given more resources, the IN has the capacity and capability to expand.&nbsp;&nbsp;

People are saying “Tumse na ho payega @narendramodi,” Moitra, the Lok Sabha MP from Krishnanagar posted on X. "This was bound to happen. Some people who had voted for BJP in Lok Sabha, have realised that they will not waste their votes. The game has started. Modi government in Delhi will not stay for a long time. INDIA alliance will form the government and the role of TMC in it will be very significant," TMC leader Kunal Ghosh told ANI. "We will review our performance. Karnataka Police is taking the phrase "modern problems require modern solutions" to the next level by devising an innovative punishment for tourists who defied a ban on bathing in a waterfall during the monsoon season, and netizens are impressed.

The police removed the clothes of tourists who had entered the gushing Charmadi Falls in Mudigere to take a bath despite caution signs.

The group allegedly disregarded warning signs posted around the waterfall that banned entry into the water during the rainy season.&nbsp;

They left their clothes on the shore and proceeded into the waterfall, climbing rocks in an area marked as off-limits.

Chikmagalur division police officers saw the tourists trying to climb the rocks and took their abandoned clothes and walked away. A video shows those men asking the officers to return their clothes.

After warning the tourists, the Karnataka Police returned the clothing. They also gave them safety instructions before letting them leave. Since July 1, parts of the Southern state has prohibited tourist entry to waterfalls due to increased risk of safety during the rainy season.

Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) in India's southernmost state of Kerala reached a major milestone Thursday (Jul 11) as it welcomed its first mothership, which arrived from China. It is the first-ever arrival of such a large vessel at the country's largest transhipment port, managed by the Adani Group. The seaport commenced operations by receiving the mothership as part of a trial run. The port will be fully operational in September this year, marking the local festival of Onam.

<h2>What is&nbsp;a mothership?</h2>

A mothership is referred to as a large vessel that may serve as a base for smaller vessels or operations. It carries containers in large numbers, which are later off-loaded to other ships to be ferried to other nations and ports.

The mothership that arrived at Kerala port Thursday is named ‘San Fernando’, which is 300 metres long and 48 metres wide. As per reports, it will offload about 1,900 containers at the port on Friday.

<h2>Kerala CM's post</h2>

Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, earlier said in a post on Facebook that the dream was approaching the shore of the state.

“The dream is approaching the shore. The first mothership is reaching Kerala’s Vizhinjam port,” Vijayan wrote.

According to Kerala Minister V N Vasavan, VISL is India's deep sea port with depths between 20 and 24 metres. It allows bigger vessels and cargo ships, including motherships, to dock at the port without any problem.

"Elsewhere, we would have to dredge to attain such depths,” the minister noted.

Union Minister of Ports,&nbsp;Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, said, “Under the leadership of PM Modi, in India, we have always been looking to develop transshipment hub for the container ships. Because of the lack of it, our opportunity has always been diverted to other nations. Many more transshipment hubs will be built in India, this is one of them.”

In an affidavit submitted to the Indian Supreme Court on Wednesday (July 10), the central government stated that there was no "mass malpractice" in the 2024 NEET-UG examination.

In an affidavit submitted to the Indian Supreme Court on Wednesday (July 10), the central government stated that there was no "mass malpractice" in the 2024 NEET-UG examination. The Centre claims that an analysis of the data carried out by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras shows no proof of widespread misconduct or any kind of unfair advantage for a certain set of candidates, which may lead to unusual scores. Counselling will begin in four rounds in the third week of July, the government said. It added that any applicant who is discovered to have benefitted from malpractice will have their candidacy terminated at any time during or after the counselling process. #BREAKING Centre files affidavit in the #SupremeCourt denying any "mass malpractice" in the NEET-UG 24 exam. Centre says the data anayltics done by experts at IIT Madras showed no abnormality in the exam.#NEETUG24 #SupremeCourt pic.twitter.com/y6fpXG52Ls — Live Law (@LiveLawIndia) July 10, 2024 × "The marks distribution follows the bell-shaped curve that is witnessed in any large-scale examination indicating no abnormality," the IIT Madras report said. "City-wise and center-wise analysis was done for 2 years (2023 and 2024) to find out if there are any abnormal indications. The Analysis is carried out for the Top 1.4 lakh ranks given that the total number of seats across the country is around 1.1 lakhs," it added. "The analysis shows that there is neither any indication of mass malpractice nor a localised set of candidates being benefitted leading to abnormal scores," the report said. Also read: Pune trainee IAS, who used siren on private car, claimed visual, mental disability; later dodged medical exams "There is an overall increase in the marks obtained by students, specifically in the range of 550 to 720. This increase is seen across the cities and centres. This is attributed to a 25% reduction in syllabus. In addition, candidates obtaining such high marks are spread across multiple cities and multiple centres, indicating very less likelihood of malpractice," it further added. On Monday (Jul 8), the Supreme Court reviewed multiple petitions concerning the contentious NEET-UG 2024 medical entrance exam. The petitions included allegations of paper leakage and other malpractices during the May 5 test, with calls for the exam to be conducted anew. The apex court had requested reports from the NTA and the Centre detailing the steps taken as well as any potential ideas on using data analytics in the cyber forensics unit or any other government-employed unit to find suspect cases. India: No 'mass malpractice' in 2024 NEET-UG exam, government tells Supreme Court

While dealing with a matter related to a missing minor girl, the Delhi High Court said that the first 24-hour period is crucial for tracing a missing person or child.

"There is no scope for any speculation or conjecture that the child may return home in 24 hours, and hence the police can wait. In fact, the first 24-hour period is the crucial period, when steps for tracing the missing person or child could lead to a positive outcome," the division bench of Justices Prathiba M Singh and Amit Sharma said on Tuesday.

The bench referred to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and directed, "All the police stations shall ensure that there shall be no waiting period for 24 hours in the case of missing children to start an inquiry or investigation."

"Accordingly, let the Commissioner of Police look at the matter and give directions to all police stations to ensure that the waiting period of 24 hours is wholly unnecessary and in fact, whenever a complaint is received, the inquiry, and investigation should immediately commence," the High Court ordered on July 9.

The High Court, after noting the submissions of standing counsel for Delhi police, has also transferred the present case to the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (Crime Branch), Delhi police, who shall conduct an immediate and diligent investigation under the supervision of a senior officer not below the rank of an ACP.

The bench also directed the filing of a Status Report within a period of one week from today. The matter has been listed on July 16 for a hearing.

The direction has been passed in a Habeas Corpus plea moved by the father of a minor girl who has been missing since February 2024.

It is the case of the petitioner that his daughter was missing on February 19, 2024, around 10:00 am.

It has been further averred by the petitioner that he immediately approached the Nangloi Police Station to complain but the police instructed him to wait for 24 hours, presuming that the minor girl may return within that period.

Thereafter, the petitioner again approached the police on February 20, 2024, and a 'missing person report' was registered instead of an FIR being registered for the offence of kidnapping.

Advocate Manika Tripathy, along with Naveen K Saraswat and Rony John, appeared for the petitioner.

Officials in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh received the findings from the two-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the stampede in Hathras district on Tuesday (July 9).

Officials in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh received the findings from the two-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the stampede in Hathras district on Tuesday (July 9). The report blamed the organisers, the local police, and the administration for the July 2 catastrophe that claimed 121 lives. Government suspends six officials blamed in the SIT report In response to the report, the government suspended six officials in several hours: two local police outpost in-charge officers, a circle officer, a tehsildar, a station house officer, and Sikandra Rao sub-divisional magistrate. “The sub-divisional magistrate of Sikandra Rao granted permission for the event without inspecting the venue…” the SIT said. SDM Ravindra Kumar, Circle Officer Anand Kumar, Station House Officer Ashish Kumar, Tehsildar Sushil Kumar, Chowki Incident Manager of Kachora Manveer Singh, and Chowki Incharge of Pora Brijesh Pandey are among the suspended officials. Notably, the "godman," Suraj Pal, also known as Bhole Baba or Narayan Sakaar Hari, was not included in the 855-page SIT report of those found guilty. The stampede victims were there for a Satsang, or religious meeting, hosted by Bhole Baba, a former police officer turned preacher. Also read: 11 married women elope with lovers after receiving housing scheme money in India According to the police, the victims, most of whom were women, fell on the uneven terrain while attempting to retrieve soil the preacher had stepped on before leaving the site in Hathras' Sikandra Rao district. Following the stampede, the SIT of Divisional Commissioner (Aligarh) Chaitra V and Additional Director General of Police (Agra Zone) Anupam Kulshreshtha was established. The stampede site was examined on July 2, 3, and 5. Watch | India: Rahul Gandhi visits relief camps in Manipur; first visit to the state as Leader of Opposition × According to Uttar Pradesh government officials, 125 people, including eyewitnesses and members of the public, as well as administrative and police officers, have provided testimonies for the inquiry. In addition, the SIT examined copies of news reports, photos, video clips, and on-site footage. Possibility of conspiracy not ruled out: SIT The SIT report did not rule out the possibility of a conspiracy, as UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath suggested while seeking a thorough inquiry into the issue. “Based on the investigation and actions taken so far, the investigation committee has not ruled out the possibility of a major conspiracy behind the accident and has emphasised the need for a thorough investigation. The investigation committee has also found the event organiser and tehsil-level police and administration guilty,” an official said. “They did not make adequate and smooth arrangements despite inviting an unexpected crowd, nor did they comply with the conditions set by the local administration for the program. People associated with the organising committee have been found guilty of spreading chaos. Individuals added by the committee without proper police verification contributed to the disorder,” said the SIT. The SIT also claimed that the parameters necessary for the permit were not met and that the event's organisers had gotten permission for the event by concealing certain facts. “The Satsang performers and the crowd were allowed to mingle without any security arrangements. Despite the large crowd, no barricading or passage arrangements were made, and when the accident occurred, members of the organising committee fled from the scene,” SIT added. The Union Public Service Commission had received an affidavit from Puja Khedkar, a Civil Services officer on probation, claiming to be mentally and visually challenged to receive concessions during the selection process.

She later declined to take the&nbsp;necessary medical exam six times to establish her disability, said reports. Given that she declined to take the exam, it is unclear how or why she got appointed.

According to unconfirmed reports, the first test was scheduled&nbsp;for April 2022 at Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences. She missed it, stating she had tested positive for COVID-19.

She also skipped two appointments in July and August, as well as in the following two months. She did not show up for an MRI exam to evaluate her visual loss, and she just partially attended the sixth exam in September.

The Commission then disputed her appointment, and a panel decided against her in February 2023. Despite this, she was able to get her civil service post reaffirmed.

Khedkar's claim to the OBC, or Other Backward Classes, category is also being questioned.

It is alleged that the falsified statements and the allowances obtained through them enabled Khedkar to pass the highly competitive Civil Services Exam despite achieving a relatively low all-India rank of 841.

After her 'exploits' were exposed—including using a siren on her private Audi luxury sedan—Khedkar was transferred from Pune to Washim. Pune Collector Suhas Divase had written to the Chief Secretary of the Maharashtra government to request Puja Khedkar's reassignment.

The apex group of the Kuki tribes in the Indian state of Manipur&nbsp;has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of five Kuki-Zo people who were detained by central forces twice, from the Tamenglong and Kangpokpi districts. The group,&nbsp;Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM),&nbsp;has called for a 12-hour total shutdown, supported by various Kuki-Zo civil bodies, on Wednesday (July 10).

From 6:00 am&nbsp;to 6:00 pm (local time), the whole Kuki-Zo-dominated region of Manipur was placed under lockdown. In the majority of Manipur's Kuki-dominated districts, such as Churachandpur and Kangpokpi, the closure has interfered with daily life.

The apex group of the Kuki tribes in the Indian state of Manipur has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of five Kuki-Zo people who were detained by central forces twice, from the Tamenglong and Kangpokpi districts. The group, Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), has called for a 12-hour total shutdown, supported by various Kuki-Zo civil bodies, on Wednesday (July 10). From 6:00 am to 6:00 pm (local time), the whole Kuki-Zo-dominated region of Manipur was placed under lockdown. In the majority of Manipur's Kuki-dominated districts, such as Churachandpur and Kangpokpi, the closure has interfered with daily life. “The recent arrest of five Kuki-Zo individuals in the presence of Central Security Forces is critically alarming for the Kuki-Zo people, while valley-based militant groups are openly brandishing sophisticated arms and ammunition in the valley,” KIM said in a statement. “The protest is against the gross injustice meted out to our people,” the statement added. Manipur: Tribe body shuts down Kuki dominated areas for 12 hours, demands release of detained Kuki-Zo members

At least 24 people have been detained for questioning as the hunt for the terrorists behind the ambush in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district entered its third day on Wednesday, officials said.&nbsp;Five army personnel were killed in the ambush.

The search operation by the army and police is underway amid intermittent heavy rain in dense forests across four districts, besides Kathua. It was launched from three different areas -- Kathua, Udhampur and Bhaderwah, officials said.

Security forces have detained 24 people for questioning in connection with the ambush, they said, as efforts continued to track down and neutralise the terrorists who are believed to be hiding in a forest.

The officials said another search operation is underway in the higher reaches of the Doda district, where a gunfight took place between terrorists and security forces on Tuesday evening, a day after the ambush in Kathua.

On the search operation linked to the Kathua ambush, the officials said army and police personnel are also deployed in dense forests in different parts of Udhampur, Samba, Rajouri and Poonch districts.

Fresh searches were also launched in the Lala Chack area of Samba, Manjakote area of Rajouri and Surankote of Poonch on Wednesday morning, they said.

On Monday, terrorists ambushed a patrol party on the Machedi-Kindli-Malhar mountainous road near Badnota village in Lohai Malhar, around 150 km from the Kathua district headquarters, killing five army personnel and injuring as many.&nbsp; &nbsp;

From the Bhaderwah side, security personnel are moving cautiously because of the area's challenging topography, thick foliage, and natural caves, the officials said.

Personnel of the army's special forces "Para" unit have also been deployed to conduct surgical operations in specific areas, they said.

Officials said the search teams are being supported by helicopter and UAV surveillance. In addition, sniffer dogs have been deployed and metal detectors are being used, particularly in dense forest areas, of the region.

They said a team of the National Investigation Agency has visited the scene of the ambush and is assisting police in the probe.

On the Doda search operation, officials said police and army personnel are combing the Ghadi Bhagwah forest area, which is around 35 km east of Doda town and borders Kishtwar district.

The operation to hunt down two terrorists, who are believed to have suffered injuries in the Tuesday encounter, resumed early Wednesday. The terrorists are yet to be traced, the officials said.

In the backdrop of the ambush in Badnota in Kathua, residents of Badnota village and its adjoining villages said they were concerned about their safety.

They have demanded that village defence groups be sanctioned arms for their self-defence and to effectively tackle threats posed by terrorists.

"The government should provide weapons and training to us, we are ready to fight shoulder-to-shoulder with our forces against the terrorists,” Jagdish Raj, a local, said.

Punkaj, a 20-year-old student, said the ambush has caused fear among the local populace but “the situation changes altogether when you have weapons in your hands”.

"We can swiftly move into the forests and help tackle the threat of terrorism,” he said, demanding a special recruitment drive for the local youth of the area.

Shahid Ahmad, who claimed to have moved from the higher reaches to Machedi due to terror threat, said Muslims and Hindus of the area want peace and are ready to assist security forces in wiping out terrorism.

“Our eyes filled with tears on the loss of our soldiers. Such an attack had never happened (here) even during the peak of terrorism over two decades ago,” he said, adding that the government should provide weapons and training to them to fight the menace.

Ahmad said innocent villagers, who have moved with their flocks of livestock to the upper reaches, are compelled to provide food to terrorists as they threatened at gunpoint.

“We are with our forces in the fight against terrorism,” he said.

The now-former Shiv Sena leader's family members, including his mother and sisters, fled the scene of the Sunday BMW hit-and-run due to fear of being attacked by the mob and subjected to interrogation, said the Mumbai police who are investigating the case, on Wednesday. According to investigators, Mihir Shah shaved off his beard to hide his identity and avoid getting caught. According to the Mumbai police, Mihir, who had been on the run after hitting and killing a 45-year-old woman in Worli on Sunday, initially hid at his girlfriend’s house in Goregaon. From there, his elder sister picked him up and dropped him near Thane. Afterwards, the main accused, his sisters, and his mother stayed in various hotels in Thane, near Nashik, and in Murbad. Hours before the BMW hit-and-run incident, Mihir Shah was at a bar in Mumbai's Juhu area with some friends, where he is believed to have consumed alcohol. <h2>Pioneering moves&nbsp;and Hyderabad</h2>

Hyderabad has consistently set precedents in recognising and supporting gender diversity.&nbsp;

Previously, in June 2015, a BA LLB law student from NALSAR (National Academy of Legal Studies and Research) University requested that their gender not be identified in the graduation certificate. The Hyderabad-based university agreed, and allowed the student to use the honorific prefix 'Mx' instead of 'Ms,' marking a significant step towards recognising gender fluidity in India.

Several years later, in March 2022, NALSAR University designated a hostel floor as an inclusive space for LGBTQ+ students, further promoting a supportive environment.&nbsp;

The progressive steps, as per the Indian Express, continued last year when Dr Ruth Paul John became the first transgender doctor to pursue post-graduation in the country. After securing a position in the MD Emergency Medicine programme at ESI Hospital, Hyderabad, Dr Ruth, supported by Osmania General Hospital and voluntary organisations, raised funds to enroll in the programme.

In another landmark move, the Telangana Government, in July 2023, established the first transgender clinic at Osmania General Hospital, where doctors underwent sensitisation training to better serve the transgender community.&nbsp;

Building on these advancements, the University of Hyderabad has even announced a transgender policy set to start in the 2024-25 academic year. With this, it will become the second university in India after Delhi University to implement such a policy.
