The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the INDIA bloc got into a political spat on Thursday over Samajwadi Party MP RK Chaudhary's proposal to remove "Sengol" from the Parliament.

Chaudhary asked that the Constitution take the place of the Sengol, calling it a symbol of "monarchy" and challenging its continued existence in the Parliament.

Chaudhary said that he was “surprised” seeing the Sengol during his oath-taking in a letter to Om Birla, the speaker of the Lok Sabha.

He stated that the Constitution is a symbol of democracy, but that the Sengol was put up in Parliament by the PM Modi-led BJP government.

“The Constitution is the holy book of democracy…Sengol means ‘Raj-Dand’ or ‘Raja ka Danda’...After ending the princely order, the country became independent. Will the country be run by ‘Raja ka danda’ or the Constitution? I demand that Sengol be removed from Parliament to save the Constitution”, the SP leader said.

“...Our Parliament is the temple of democracy and not the princely palace of some kingdom,” he added.

Janata Dal (Secular) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLC) Suraj Revanna was accused of sexually assaulting a second man on Tuesday (June 25). Holenarasipur Rural Police have now registered a complaint of sexual abuse against Suraj, the brother of Prajwal Revanna, the former JD(S) who himself is facing sexual assault investigations.

The police received a complaint from a resident of Holenarasipur taluk who was, until recently, thought to be a close aide of the JD(S) politician.

The complainant claimed that the accused sexually attacked him three years ago, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The police filed a complaint under Sections 377 (unnatural offences), 342 (wrongful imprisonment), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the first case filed against Suraj Revanna on June 16, the accused allegedly sexually harassed and threatened to kill a minor from Arkalgud taluk at his farmhouse in Gannikada, Hassan district.

The complaint was filed on June 22. Revanna was arrested the next day and was remanded to 14 days' judicial custody. He was placed under eight days of police detention on Monday by the court.

The state government then turned the investigation over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The second FIR might also be handed over to CID for further investigation.

It should be noted that the second case's complainant was also named as an accused in the first complaint brought against Suraj Revanna. He was charged with threatening to kill the plaintiff if the complainant reported Suraj Revanna to the police.

Furthermore, on June 21, the complainant in the second case earlier filed a complaint with Holenarasipur Town Police, claiming that two individuals, including the presumed victim in the first case, were "blackmailing" the JD(S) politician.

He swapped sides after a few days. He alleged that the legislator sexually harassed him. Aside from that, he said Suraj Revanna ordered him to file a lawsuit against the Arakalgud teenager, accusing him of blackmailing the politician.

On June 25, 1975, Emergency was declared in India by Former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed on then-PM Indira Gandhi's advice.

Gravitas Recall: Indira Gandhi declared Emergency 49 years ago, on June 25, 1975

Starting with news from India failing to reach a consensus after jostling over who will become the country's next speaker of the lower house of parliament or the Lok Sabha the BJP-led NDA government and the Congress LED India block opposition are locking horns.

India: First-ever election for Lower House of Parliament's speaker, who will be next speaker?

Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Kodikunnil Suresh and National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) Om Birla are going up against each other in a battle for the Lok Sabha Speaker’s post, after consensus talks helmed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh failed.

Ahead of the election for the speaker of the lower house on Wednesday (June 26), K Suresh filed his nomination for the coveted post, challenging the NDA’s repeat pick Kota MP Om Birla.

Suresh, the senior-most member of the 18th Lok Sabha, was also at the centre of the recent pro-tem speaker row after the ruling BJP-led alliance nominated Bhartruhari Mahtab for the post instead of him.

Notably, this is the first open election for the Speaker; the last time such election was held was decades ago- once in 1952 and later in 1976.

Who is K Suresh?

Kodikunnil Suresh is an eight-term MP and currently represents the SC-reserved Mavelikara Lok Sabha constituency in the southern state of Kerala.

A Congress Working Committee Member (Special Invitee), he was one of the frontrunners for the post of Congress Kerala unit chief in 2021.

He serves as the chief whip of Congress parliamentary party in Lok Sabha and is also the working president of Congress’s Kerala unit.

First elected to Lok Sabha in 1989, Suresh went on to win four straight times in the general elections from the Adoor constituency, emerging victorious also in 1991, 1996 and 1999.

However, he was defeated in the 1998 and 2004 general elections.

The MP served as Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment in the second UPA government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Notably, he was disqualified by the Kerala high court in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections over a plea filed by his opponent RS Anil of the CPI, alleging that his caste certificate was fake and that he belonged to the OBC Cheramar Christian community and not the Cheramar Hindu community that is categorised as a Scheduled Caste.

However, the verdict was later reversed by the Supreme Court that set aside the High Court’s order, and he retained his seat.

The Mavelikara MP, with declared assets worth Rs 15 million in the Lok Sabha polls, has six criminal cases relating to rioting, unlawful assembly and obstructing a public servant from discharging duty registered against him.
