Patanjali Ayurved informed the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday (July 9) that it has ceased selling 14 products following the suspension of its manufacturing license by a state authority in Uttarakhand in April.

Patanjali Ayurved informed the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday (July 9) that it has ceased selling 14 products following the suspension of its manufacturing license by a state authority in Uttarakhand in April. A bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Sandeep Mehta was informed by the company founded by yoga guru Baba Ramdev and his aide Acharya Balkrishna, that 5,606 franchise outlets had been requested to remove the items in question. The company was given a two-week deadline by the court to provide an affidavit attesting to the removal of advertisements for its banned medicines that have been removed from media platforms. It highlighted that its prior ruling requiring advertisers to file self-declaration forms about the content of their commercials should not have a negative impact on the sector. Watch | Kashmir Tigers claim responsibility for attacks in J&K × In May, the apex court directed broadcasters to submit their self-declarations through the Information and Broadcasting Ministry's Broadcast Seva portal. It also directed the central government to establish a new portal for submitting self-declaration forms for advertisements in print media. The television, radio, and internet associations subsequently filed motions to intervene in the proceedings, claiming that the top court's orders would have an impact on the advertising industry. The Supreme Court ordered the Centre on Tuesday to meet with stakeholders and top I&B Ministry officials to discuss objections raised by the advertising industry. It also suggested that the Ministry of Consumer Affairs should be included as a party in the case. The focus of this court has already been highlighted in previous orders and needs no repetition. The Ministry is directed to continue the churning of ideas and have further meetings in this direction and file an affidavit making its recommendations," said the bench. The court noted that the petition's scope has broadened beyond misleading advertisements due to the involvement of multiple parties. Consequently, it appointed lawyer Shadan Farasat as an amicus curiae (friend of the court) to assist with the case. (With inputs from agencies)

India: At least one dead, many feared buried after building collapse in Gujarat

Sunita Kejriwal, the wife of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, said on Saturday (Jul 6) that her husband was the victim of a "deep political conspiracy" and encouraged the public to support him, warning that if they didn't, no honest and educated person would want to enter politics.

She claimed in her first video message following the Lok Sabha election results, that Kejriwal was detained by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the excise policy case by using a "false" statement from a witness.

Sunita Kejriwal made similar accusations previously made by the leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) against Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy (MSR), who was recently elected to the Lok Sabha on a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) ticket, and his son Raghava Magunta, an accused-turned-approver.

She said that if the people of New Delhi do not support Kejriwal, no educated and honest person in the nation will pursue a career in politics.

Based on TDP MP MSR's testimony, the ED detained Arvind Kejriwal, said Sunita. She mentioned that the TDP is a part of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Delhi CM's wife also said that following the arrest and denial of bail for his son Raghava Magunta Reddy, MSR altered his testimony to the ED regarding his meeting with the chief minister of Delhi.

In response to his son's incarceration, MSR reportedly stated on July 17, 2023, that he had met with the Delhi CM on March 16, 2021, to discuss land for a charity foundation he wished to establish in the Indian capital.

Sunita Kejriwal claims that MSR later withdrew this remark.

"In his statement to the ED, MSR said Kejriwal asked him in the presence of nearly 10-12 people to enter the liquor business in Delhi and pay ₹100 crore to A. Would anybody ask for money before so many people," she asked.

MSR said that his meeting with CM Arvind Kejriwal on March 16, 2021, lasted a scant four to five minutes. She said that he then claimed that this was the CM's first and final encounter with him.

"It is clear that this statement of Magunta Reddy is false. Magunta Reddy himself has said that this was his first and last meeting with CM Arvind Kejriwal and 10-12 people were also sitting there.

"If someone had to ask for money from someone, would he ask for money from a stranger in front of 10-12 people in the first meeting itself?" she asked.

The Delhi CM's wife appealed for people to see her video and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi intended to use the ED and CBI to "finish off" Kejriwal and the AAP.

The BJP retaliated against Sunita Kejriwal, accusing her of "casting aspersions" on the judiciary and claiming she has "mastered the art of story-telling like her husband".

"It's surprising to see her casting aspersions on the judiciary as during her story-telling she repeatedly says that the bail of MS Reddy's son was rejected when he gave a true statement and when he buckled under pressure and changed his statement, his son was granted bail by the court," Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said.

According to defence officials, the nation's light tank prototype, named Zorawar, is ready and will shortly undergo rigorous testing. The indigenous tank was revealed on July 6.

The principal integrator, Larsen & Toubro, and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) collaborated on its development. According to media reports, DRDO has started working on a project to manufacture a new engine locally to replace the Cummins engine that powers the tank today.

“It has been developed from the drawing board within the shortest possible time and capable of operation in the most challenging environment on the earth, i.e. extreme weather and extreme height with minimal logistic support in high altitude areas along the northern border of India,” a defence official told The Hindu.

Following factory acceptance, the prototype is ready and will soon undergo internal testing in the field before being given to the users for testing.

The tank will be tested in summer, winter, and high altitude circumstances over the next six months as part of developmental trials. By August 2025, the tank will be turned over to the Army for user trials.

The Army released a Request for Information (RFI) in April 2021 for the phased acquisition of 350 light tanks weighing less than 25 tonnes, as well as the needs for engineering support packages, specialised technologies, performance-based logistics, and other maintenance and training.

Following this, in order to promote indigenous development of defence weapon platforms through industry, DRDO and L&T collaborated to build a light tank. Numerous Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises were also brought in for different sub-system development projects.

Netizens are expressing their displeasure with telecom behemoths by posting under the hashtag 'boycott jio' which has since been trending on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

The coordinated price increase by telecom giants Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone has triggered this protest. Millions of people globally have been affected by the substantial hikes in data packs, impacting prepaid and postpaid customers. The price hikes range from 10 per cent to a staggering 25 per cent.

The Indian market is dominated by three telecom giants: Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone. These three together serve around 1 billion out of the 1.19 billion mobile subscribers.

"Effective July 3, the three private cell phone companies, i.e. Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, have increased their tariffs by an average of 15 per cent. The three private cell phone companies have a market share of 91.6 per cent, or 109 crore cell phone users out of a total of 119 crore cell phone users as of December 31, 2023," Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said.

In opposition to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and two other laws that went into effect on Monday (July 1), Karnataka is thinking of proposing state-level amendments to modify the new criminal laws.

In opposition to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and two other laws that went into effect on Monday (July 1), Karnataka is thinking of proposing state-level amendments to modify the new criminal laws. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil revealed this during a news conference on Monday, stating that the Central government should postpone implementing the new criminal laws until they incorporate the suggestions made by the state government a year ago. Patil stated that every government that makes a law has the moral right to enforce it during its time, but that executing it after the government's tenure has ended is immoral and politically improper. “The decision made by the Cabinet of the previous government is not right to be implemented now. They had the right to enforce it. It is inappropriate that it has been implemented after the new government took over,” he said. “Siddaramaiah had written to the Central government explaining the various recommendations of the state government. The Centre has not considered a majority of them,” he added. In October 2023, Siddaramaiah wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah proposing 23 amendments to the BNS, Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), and Bharatiya Nagarika Nyaya Sanhita (BNNS) Bills. “If the Centre does not heed the State’s request to defer the implementation of these laws that have been promulgated ignoring public opinion and the suggestion of the legal luminaries, Karnataka will make use of the Constitutional provisions to enact amendments,” Patil said. “While hunger strike against the government is an offence under this law, it is unfortunate that suicide is not a crime,” Patil added. Also read: PM Modi says people rejected propaganda in elections, vows action in NEET row “We are mulling over amendments to provisions under BNS and other laws that criminalise hunger strikes. Another amendment is related to the definition of ‘organised crime’. The definition of ‘organised crime’ in the new law is vague. Based on such unclear terms, the laws allow investigating agencies to make unilateral decisions,” he continued. The Minister stated that the state government is thinking of creating a distinct chapter for crimes involving technology, such as cybercrimes, economic offences, investing in tax havens, and other similar offences. “The BSA allows police custody for 90 days, which is a violation of human rights. Amendments will be made to reduce the duration of police custody. The police, under the new laws, are empowered to seize the properties of those involved in criminal activities. An amendment will ensure that only courts are empowered to seize properties,” he continued. (With inputs from agencies)

The Delhi Police are all set to implement the three new criminal laws which will come into effect across the country from Monday, bringing widespread changes in India's criminal justice system and ending colonial-era laws. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam will replace the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively. "Proper trainings were organised to understand the new laws. Those who received the training were given handbooks to understand the new laws," a senior officer of the Delhi Police said. In January this year, a 14-member committee was constituted to study the laws and prepare the study material for the Delhi Police personnel. The committee was led by Special Commissioner of Police Chhaya Sharma and comprised DCP Joy Tirkey, Additional DCP Uma Shankar and other officers. During the last 15 days, the Delhi Police personnel initiated a trial process where they registered dummy FIRs, said the officer. "The Investigative Officers (IOs) captured pictures and recorded the crime scene with their mobile phone cameras and subsequently uploaded them on the e-Praman Application," said the officer. As per the new law, the evidence collection process at the crime scene will be mandatorily videographed to prevent evidence tampering, another police officer said. "There will be helpline numbers for the IOs to help them in understanding the law," said the police officer.
