'Wasn’t with us every day as a father, but...': Imran Khan's son says ex-Pakistan PM 'chose to remain in dark imprisonment'

Days after former Pakistani PM Imran Khan's sons spoke about his incarceration and demanded his release, Jemima Goldsmith, Khan's ex-wife slammed the government for threatening them with arrest if they attempt to visit the country. In a strongly worded post on X, Goldsmith said her sons, Sulaiman and Qasim Khan, have not been allowed to speak to Imran, who has been held in solitary confinement in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail for nearly two years. “Pakistan’s govt has now said if they go there to try to see him, they too will be arrested and put behind bars. This isn’t politics. It’s a personal vendetta,” she wrote. Her reaction came after adviser to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Rana Sanaullah, said in atelevision interview that his sons would be arrested if they try to join the nationwide protest by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI). “Why won’t they be arrested? "Our family knows about the protest plan," she added. However, she did not reveal the details regarding the upcoming demonstration. She announced that Imran Khan's entire family would be part of the upcoming protest.
Imran Khan's sons break silence
Imran Khan's sons Qasim and Sulaiman Khan made an appeal to US President Donald Trump and “people of influence” around to world to step in and support their father’s release. Khan's sons, who have stayed away from politics, urged the international community to step up efforts and put pressure on the Pakistani administration to release his father. In a television interview, they said that “they couldn’t stay quiet any longer.” "They are not giving him [Imran Khan] basic human rights. It is basically for human rights of not only our father but also other political prisoners and the restoration of proper democracy in Pakistan,” Qasim said. When asked about speculation that Khan might strike a deal with the government to secure his release, Qasim dismissed the idea outright. “I just don’t see him taking a deal like that to save his skin. He’s a very principled person … I don’t think he’ll just take a deal while other people are sitting in cells on his behalf, his supporters,” he said. Both brothers admitted they deeply miss their father, but what hurts more, they said, is “seeing a nation lose the man who gave everything for it”. “He always told us: if you stand for truth, you’ll pay a price. The case alleges that Khan facilitated the illegal transfer of £190 million (received from the UK’s National Crime Agency) in exchange for land given to a trust linked to him and Bushra Bibi. In addition, Khan was previously convicted in the Toshakhana case—for selling state gifts without proper disclosure—and sentenced to 3 years, which led to his disqualification from politics. Though this conviction was later suspended, it set the stage for further legal action. He was also sentenced to 10 years in the Cipher case, but that conviction was quashed by the Islamabad High Court in June 2024. Beyond convictions, Khan is facing over 180 legal cases, including terrorism charges related to the 2023 protests.

RELEASE IMRAN KHAN NOW: The movement that could shake Pakistan govt to its core is led by his sons Sulaiman and Qasim Khan

Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister Imran Khan has slammed Army Chief Asim Munir and, while comparing him to a dictator who rules through brute force, said that he would prefer to live in jail than accept slavery. He also exhorted his supporters to stage nationwide protests against the ‘hybrid’ regime. In a long post on X, the 72-year-old cricketer-turned-politician, who has been behind bars since August 2023, called on the workers of his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), to stage an uprising against the current regime after Ashura, the 10th day of mourning in Moharram to commemorate the 7th-century martyrdom of the Prophet’s grandson, Imam Hussein, which falls on July 6 this year.
‘Rise against the tyrannical system’
“To the entire nation, especially PTI workers and supporters, I urge them to rise against this tyrannical system after Ashura,” Khan posted on X on Tuesday.Stirring political emotions from behind the bars, Khan declared that he would rather live in a dark prison cell than accept slavery under what he called a “hybrid regime”.“I would rather live in a dark prison cell than accept this slavery,” added Khan.Khan said that his voice is being silenced through every possible means so that his message does not reach the people.
‘When a dictator comes to power, he rules though brute force’
Commenting on Army Chief Asim Munir, Khan said, “When a dictator comes to power, he doesn’t need votes—he rules through brute force.”Calling the judiciary in Pakistan a “sub-department of the executive”, Khan said that “courts are filled with hand-picked judges, while independent judges are rendered powerless.”Khan, who remains a highly influential figure despite being imprisoned, accused the ruling regime of curbing democratic freedoms and suppressing political dissent. “This only happens under martial law,” he said while adding that freedom of speech has been completely crushed in the country, and independent journalists are being targeted.Khan has been booked in several cases in connection with the May 9, 2023, violence, which erupted after his arrest by paramilitary Rangers from the Islamabad High Court premises.

Khan accused the ruling regime of curbing democratic freedoms and suppressing political dissent and said that this only happens under martial law. The former PM added that freedom of speech has been completely crushed in the country, and independent journalists are being targeted.

‘Rise against the tyrannical system’ “To the entire nation, especially PTI workers and supporters, I urge them to rise against this tyrannical system after Ashura,” Khan posted on X on Tuesday. Stirring political emotions from behind the bars, Khan declared that he would rather live in a dark prison cell than accept slavery under what he called a “hybrid regime”. “I would rather live in a dark prison cell than accept this slavery,” added Khan. Khan said that his voice is being silenced through every possible means so that his message does not reach the people. ‘When a dictator comes to power, he rules though brute force’ Commenting on Army Chief Asim Munir, Khan said, “When a dictator comes to power, he doesn’t need votes—he rules through brute force.” Calling the judiciary in Pakistan a “sub-department of the executive”, Khan said that “courts are filled with hand-picked judges, while independent judges are rendered powerless.” Khan, who remains a highly influential figure despite being imprisoned, accused the ruling regime of curbing democratic freedoms and suppressing political dissent. “This only happens under martial law,” he said while adding that freedom of speech has been completely crushed in the country, and independent journalists are being targeted. Khan has been booked in several cases in connection with the May 9, 2023, violence, which erupted after his arrest by paramilitary Rangers from the Islamabad High Court premises.

Just as hopes for renewed dialogue between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the federal government appeared to be gaining momentum — reportedly with encouragement from influential quarters — PTI Chairman Imran Khan has once again chosen mass mobilisation over negotiations. According to sources, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Ali Ameen Gandapur had recently informed Khan and senior PTI leaders that a positive signal had been received from the “right quarters” to initiate talks with the federal government. Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif denied claims by Khan's PTI party which claimed that the government has offered to move the former Pakistan PM from Adiala Jail to Bani Gala or place him under house arrest, as per The Express Tribune reports.
Asif dismissed the claims, calling them baseless, and said, "No such proposal has been made, nor is there any pressure for his release."

"These claims are entirely unfounded and are part of PTI's ongoing attempts to mislead the public," he said as per The Express Tribune report.

He then denounced Khan's party over its alleged attempts to destabilise the country and said that "all their efforts to harm Pakistan have failed."

Khan's PTI had on Tuesday put forward its demand to the government to provide it “unfettered” access to the jailed former prime minister in Rawalpindi’s prison. “The government has arranged a meeting of the negotiation committee at Adiala Jail following the Speaker’s message,” the National Assembly’s spokesperson said. Asif dismissed the claims, calling them baseless, and said, "No such proposal has been made, nor is there any pressure for his release." He further accused PTI of forging narratives for political mileage. "These claims are entirely unfounded and are part of PTI's ongoing attempts to mislead the public," he said as per The Express Tribune report. "Imran Khan's future will be decided by the courts, not by the government. I have no connection with the judiciary and am certainly not a fortune-teller to predict court outcomes," he added. He then denounced Khan's party over its alleged attempts to destabilise the country and said that "all their efforts to harm Pakistan have failed." (With inputs from agencies)

Key features of Pakistan Democracy Act

The bill emphasises Washington’s commitment to promoting democratic governance in Pakistan. It proposes a 30-day review period to assess potential sanctions against Pakistan’s Army Chief, Asim Munir. This marks the first time sanctions have been proposed against a sitting Pakistani military leader.
Additionally, the legislation calls for a comprehensive review of all Pakistani generals, government officials, and their families to determine their eligibility for sanctions. This broad approach reflects an effort to counter any actions that undermine democracy.

Congressman Wilson first announced his intention to introduce the bill on February 13, stating on X that it would seek to ban entry into the US for those in Pakistan’s military government responsible for Imran Khan’s persecution and imprisonment.
Wilson outlined the bill’s main points in another X post on Wednesday (Feb 26), saying that it:

Establishes US policy to restore democracy in Pakistan

Mandates a 30-day determination of sanctions on senior Pakistani officials

Reviews all senior officials and their families for possible sanctions

A section of the bill shared by Wilson says that it aims to authorise sanctions against foreign individuals who have knowingly engaged in the wrongful persecution and imprisonment of political opponents in Pakistan.

Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been in jail since August 2023 over a series of legal cases, which he claims are politically motivated. Wilson has repeatedly called for his release, posting on X that he and Pfluger were pressing Rubio to "free Imran Khan and work to restore democracy in Pakistan".

She further stated that the 1992 World Cup-winning captain questioned the credentials of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
"Imran said that cricket will eventually suffer when decision-making roles are given to favourites," Aleema added, noting that the cricketer-turned-politician had watched the high-profile match against India.

Former PCB chairman Najam Sethi has indirectly blamed ex-PM Imran Khan for Pakistan cricket’s decline. In a post on X, Sethi said the nation is rightfully angry after Pakistan’s early exit from the Champions Trophy following back-to-back defeats.
He questioned how a team that was once ranked No. 1 in T20s (2018) and Tests (2016) and had won the World Cup (1992) and Champions Trophy (2017) is now being compared to Zimbabwe. According to him, the downfall began in 2019 when Imran Khan’s government changed Pakistan’s domestic cricket structure, replacing a decades-old system with an unsuitable Australian hybrid model.
Sethi criticised ongoing political interference, inconsistent PCB policies, frequent coaching changes, flawed selection decisions, and internal team conflicts. He blamed management failures, growing player power, and captaincy clashes for Pakistan’s poor performances.
Sethi believes Pakistan can recover if the real issues are addressed with integrity and professionalism. He resigned as PCB chairman after Imran Khan became PM in 2018, allowing Ehsan Mani to take over. In 2019, the PCB restructured domestic cricket under Imran’s directives. Ramiz Raja was later appointed in 2021 but was replaced by Sethi in 2022 after Imran’s government fell.
